The Geek Beat: Six Ideas for the New 'Transformers' Writers Room

Posted: 16 Jun 2015 09:30 PM PDT

No matter how you feel about the live-action Transformers franchise, the big-screen adventures of Hasbro's robots in disguise have truly been, well... more than meets the eye. Seemingly critic-proof, the four-film franchise currently ranks as the eighth highest-grossing movie franchise of all time worldwide despite being a popular punching bag for reviewers. Along the way, the series has also earned seven Academy Award nominations to go along with those poor reviews, making it the sort of spectacle that's hard to ignore or dismiss. And from the sound of things, it's only getting bigger in the years to come. Back in March, it was reported that Paramount Pictures tasked Oscar-winning writer Akiva Goldsman with assembling a “writers' room” of talented...

Kenneth Branagh to Remake 'Murder on the Orient Express'

Posted: 16 Jun 2015 08:10 PM PDT

Kenneth Branagh, once the apparent successor to Laurence Olivier and Franco Zeffirelli for mainstream association with Shakespeare movie adaptations, has been doing fluffier gigs of late -- making movies out of comic books (Thor), Disneyfied fairy tales (Cinderella) and airport spy novels (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit). Now it's time for a return to at least a nice piece of British ensemble fiction. It's not the Bard, but for fans of Branagh's earlier all-star productions, a new version of Murder on the Orient Express -- which is, easy enough, about a murder on the Orient Express railroad -- should be close enough. The last adaptation of Agatha Christie's very famous 1934 mystery novel was only five years ago, but that was part of the TV series Agatha...

See How Marvel Studios Congratulated 'Jurassic World' On Breaking the 'Avengers' Box Office Record

Posted: 16 Jun 2015 06:14 PM PDT

In a highly competitive world where opening weekend box office records are broken on a pretty regular basis, we tend to see the big studios champion their movies when they achieve a milestone. What we don't normally see is another studio congratulating someone else's movie when it breaks their own previous record. That's why this image -- tweeted by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige -- is so great. Following a weekend that saw Jurassic World snatch $208 million at the box office, topping the record previously set by Marvel's The Avengers back in 2012, Feige took to Twitter with... well, this.    Congrats Mr. Spielberg @UniversalPics @Legendary @LeDoctor @colintrevorrow and especially @prattprattpratt pic.twitter.com/5DxlDM8pgK — Kevin Feige...

Watch: Charlie Brown and the Gang Are Back in the New Trailer for 'The Peanuts Movie'

Posted: 16 Jun 2015 04:30 PM PDT

A new trailer for The Peanuts Movie has arrived online, giving us our best look yet at the new revamped, CG'd version of Charlie Brown and his merry band of misfits.  The voices sound a bit different from the Peanuts cartoons you may have grown up with, but the humor seems right on point, with just enough old-school charm mixed in with more modern sensibilities. And we love the concept of Charlie Brown taking ownership over his life, which seems to be one of the big plotlines this time around. Good for him! Check it out below. Producer Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, Spy) chatted with USA Today late last year about the new movie, revealing that he wants to stay true to the beloved comic strips and TV specials created by Charles Schulz. That means we...

Posted: 16 Jun 2015 01:30 PM PDT

A 35-year-old bank robbery and shootout will be the basis for the next Mark Romanek movie. The Wrap reports that the director behind One Hour Photo, Never Let Me Go and numerous classic music videos will helm Norco, an action thriller dramatizing the events of Norco, California, on May 9, 1980, which left three men dead, including a sheriff's deputy, and the destruction of 30 vehicles on the street plus one helicopter that was shot down by the heavily armed perpetrators. The incident, which went down as the most violent in American history, also led to the local police departments equipping themselves with automatic weapons, reportedly the first step in militarizing law enforcement on that level. So, the movie will be set decades ago but have a certain topicality given...
