Netflix Nabs More Big-Screen Talent: Watch the First Trailers for 'The Get Down' and 'The Crown'

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 09:00 PM PST

Netflix continues to rise as a major media outlet, with its Watch Instantly streaming service expanding to 130 more countries this week. This comes as the company also announced it will be introducing 600 hours of original programming in 2016, almost double what they put out last year. Additionally, during a CES keynote address, chief content officer Ted Sarandos revealed that of the 2015 slate, the Adam Sandler-led Western comedy The Ridiculous Six was the most-watched movie on Netflix ever. That includes licensed titles as well as original premieres.  Fortunately, for now at least, they won't be limiting themselves to releasing only similarly low-brow entertainment. As you can see by the following two trailers for upcoming original series, they've...

Who Is Rey? This Is the Greatest 'Force Awakens' Fan Theory We've Seen Yet

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 07:30 PM PST

The biggest question we walk away with after watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens is who pays for all the damage after Kylo Ren has a hissy fit with his lightsaber? And then after that... well, who, exactly, is Rey? The easiest conclusion -- what with her connection to Luke Skywalker's old lightsaber -- is that she's a Skywalker. But is she Luke's daughter? Is she Han Solo and Leia's daughter? Or is she someone else entirely? Could it be that Rey is actually... Obi-Wan Kenobi's granddaughter? Ben Ostrower wrote an excellent post detailing this scenario, and you'd be hard-pressed to disagree with anything he puts out there. From Rey's connection to the lightsaber, which originally belonged to Obi-Wan (and immediately summoned his voice and...

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 06:00 PM PST

What's your most anticipated movie of 2016? Is it Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice? What about a return to the wonderful wizarding world of Harry Potter by way of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them? Or perhaps it's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story? Hey, don't worry, those are some of our most anticipated movies of the year, too. You won't find them on this list, though. This list is all about the underdogs. It's about the movies whose characters won't be on Slurpee cups or won't have their own toy lines. It's all about the small movies we hope have a big impact on 2016.   Follow-up Films From Exciting New Directors Operation Avalanche - It takes a certain kind of boldness to make your directorial debut a comedy about school...

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Is Now the Highest Grossing Movie Ever

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 04:30 PM PST

Move over Avatar, there's a new king of the box office... in North America, that is. As of Wednesday morning, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has officially passed James Cameron's Avatar to become the highest grossing movie ever in the United States. The number to beat was $760.5 million, which it has, becoming only the second movie to ever gross over $700 million domestically. But can it beat Avatar at the worldwide box office? That's the big question now, and all signs are pointing to it coming in at number... two. At $1.54 billion, The Force Awakens still has a long way to go to overtake Avatar's staggering $2.78 billion at the global box office. Yes, Star Wars hasn't opened in China yet -- and that very well could be a difference-maker here -- but it still...

Joss Whedon Opens Up About Leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 03:00 PM PST

Failure can be good or bad for an artist, depending on the project. For Joss Whedon, the disappointment from fans and critics with last summer's Avengers: Age of Ultron was the latter. In a discussion at Oxford University recently, he joked that it resulted in him "becoming fetal for about eight months" and losing his spine and self-identity. "It's horrifying. It sucks. But I'll be okay ... later." Joking aside, though, it clearly hit him hard, and he goes on to discuss how any professional disappointment like that makes him very angry. Yet as an artist, he can't just let such responses go, especially if they're due to things beyond his control. "You have to be like a punching bag doll, who gets knocked back and gets right back...

'Voltron' and Guillermo del Toro's 'Trollhunters' Head to Netflix

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 01:30 PM PST

We've been hearing about a big-screen adaptation of the robot anime series Voltron for years. Back in July 2011, it seemed like a done deal, with the screenwriters from Sahara and Conan the Barbarian teaming up to script a live-action mighty battle for the titular robot, formed from a coalition of five pilots driving robot lions to protect their planet Times change, though, and now it's been announced that instead of a live-action movie, we can expect an animated series produced for Netflix by DreamWorks Animation. The streaming service has been ramping up production of original shows and the expansion of their partnership with DreamWorks Animation will include both new and established properties, as reported by...

Movie News: 'Rambo' Is Retired, Says Sylvester Stallone; Watch Ashley Benson in Scary First 'Ratter' Trailer

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 12:00 PM PST

Image: Everett Rambo: Sylvester Stallone just shared some ideas for the sequel to Creed, in which Rocky Balboa came out of retirement to train a rising boxing star. But don't expect the actor to bring his other iconic character, John Rambo, back to life. "The heart’s willing, but the body says, ‘Stay home!’ It’s like fighters that go back for one last round and get clobbered. Leave it to someone else," he said in a new interview. "There’s nothing left. When they asked me to do another Rambo, I said, ‘If I can’t do better than I did last time, and I can’t, then why’?” [Variety]   Alice Through the Looking Glass: A new photo from Alice Through the Loooking...
