The Last Sci-Fi Blog: What Should Be Rebooted and Adapted in 2016

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 10:00 PM PST

If we're going to exist in the age of reboots and remakes and adaptations, the people calling the shots might as well do it right. And because The Last Sci-Fi Blog is the arbiter of good taste when it comes to science fiction movies in general, we have some recommendations for anyone willing to listen. Here's what needs to start getting made in the year 2016.   The Television Show: Lost in Space The Original: A campy and colorful television series that ran from 1965 through 1968, Lost in Space followed the Robinsons, a family of explorers who found themselves...well, see the title. While stranded in the cosmos, they went on a variety of adventures, encountered all kinds of aliens, and learned to get along and grow as a unit. Aw. Our Pitch: Lost in...

'Fifty Shades Darker' Casts Kim Basinger as Christian Grey's Past Lover

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 08:35 PM PST

Kim Basinger is certainly no stranger to lighting up the silver screen. The former model's big Hollywood breakout was as a Bond girl in Never Say Never Again, but if that wasn't enough to cement her as a pop culture sex symbol, she also starred in 1986's erotic drama 9½ Weeks. And soon she'll be once again steaming things up on the big screen in the Fifty Shades of Grey sequel, Fifty Shades Darker. Basinger has just been cast as Elena Lincoln in the movie directed by James Foley (Fear). Book readers will instantly know what that means, but for the uninitiated, Elena is not only a former lover of Christian Grey's (Jamie Dornan), she's actually the person who introduced him to the world of BDSM and presents herself as a wedge between Grey...

Deadpool Has An Important Message About Men's Health

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 07:15 PM PST

The first red band trailer for Deadpool made it clear it wasn't going to be like most other superhero movies. It was vulgar and violent and crass and apathetic. There wasn't talk of needing to save the world or the country. It just showed us a man with terminal cancer undergo an experimental treatment and come out the other side a foul mouthed, gun-toting killer. But just because Deadpool can kill three men with one bullet and then joke about it making him want to touch himself doesn't mean he's a bad guy. He cares about saving lives as much as he cares about taking them. That's why the minds behind Deadpool put out this cheeky PSA for testicular cancer. As it turns out, when Deadpool was talking about touching himself, he meant he was going to give...

This May Be the Weirdest Way to Watch a Movie

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 05:40 PM PST

With at-home viewing growing in popularity and kids spending hours on end scouring through random YouTube videos on their phones and tablets, it's no surprise there are companies looking to create unique viewing experiences for that particular audience.  As such, meet Cardboard Home Cinema, a new way to watch movies... and enjoy trapping yourself within a big piece of cardboard! Based on the images, you can pretty much figure out what this is all about. You slide in a device, be in a phone or tablet, then crawl in and watch videos while sprawled out on your back. Doesn't look like the most comfortable way to watch stuff, but this is probably geared toward younger viewers and not old dudes with back problems. The official description (via Slashfilm) reads as...

Gather the Kids for New 'Trolls' and 'The Secret Life of Pets' Trailers

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 03:05 PM PST

These days most animated films are sophisticated enough to be enjoyed as much by adults as they are kids. The little ones can go see Frozen and come away with magic and music branded onto their brains, while adults can appreciate it as not just a great musical, but a clever twist on classic Disney princess stories. A four-year-old may want to see The Good Dinosaur for its adorable dino, while a forty-year-old may be more drawn to its stunning animation. Striking that all ages balance isn't easy, but it's certainly worth it. All that said, the first teaser trailer for Trolls has us suspecting this may be one strictly for the kiddos (and those who like twerking animated creatures). Coming from a number of minds that collectively gave us Alvin and the Chipmunks: The...

Earlier this week, the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 gathered to read the script together and writer/director James Gunn shared a playful photo, captioned: "Table read this morning … Somebody spelled [Chris Pratt's] name wrong so I fixed it." That's one indicator of his good mood about the script he's written. In response to questions from readers, Gunn confirmed that his screenplay has been finalized -- including a post-credits scene -- and noted that he's already selected the songs that will be featured on the soundtrack. The day following the table read, he shared his feelings. Even MORE excited for #GotGVol2 after our table read yesterday. Our returning cast is even better & our new cast is amazing. — James Gunn...
