Watch: 'Bridge of Spies' Clip Tells the Story of How Steven Spielberg's Cold War Drama Came To Be

Posted: 29 Jan 2016 08:30 PM PST

Most people do not know the story of James B. Donovan even though he was a crucial player in major events during the Cold War. That's because he wasn't a politician or a soldier. He didn't work directly for the U.S. government. He was a civilian lawyer who just happened to be a miracle of a human being. Even Steven Spielberg didn't know Donovan's story before he decided to direct Bridge of Spies. In fact, screenwriter Matt Charman didn't even know about Donovan's involvement in the release of downed US spy plane pilot Francis Gary Powers. As you'll see in the below clip from the Blu-ray of Bridge of Spies (out on February 2, 2016), Charman only came across Donovan after seeing him mentioned as a footnote in a biography about JFK. He grew intrigued...

'Zero Dark Thirty' Director Kathryn Bigelow and Writer Mark Boal Reunite for Detroit Riot Movie

Posted: 29 Jan 2016 06:00 PM PST

Last year, Kathryn Bigelow's follow-up to Zero Dark Thirty was announced as a movie about POW Bowe Bergdahl, who was involved in a controversial prisoner exchange with the Taliban. For this new project, she was reteaming with Oscar-winning screenwriter Mark Boal, who scripted both Zero Dark Thirty and her prior movie, The Hurt Locker. Well, that's been put on hold due to the continued digging into Bergdahl's story, which is being presented currently on the second season of the podcast Serial with Boal's involvement. So, Bigelow needs another movie in the meantime. Fortunately, Boal has another script for her to handle. This one is about the 1967 riot in Detroit, and now it will receive an appropriate release in 2017, for the 50th anniversary of the events...

'Star Wars' Buzz: Is This Rey's Father in 'The Force Awakens'?

Posted: 29 Jan 2016 04:30 PM PST

We've seen all sorts of theories with regards to who Rey's parents are in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and who, exactly, left her on the planet Jakku to live out her days as a scavenger only to be whisked away on a new adventure onboard Han Solo's Millennium Falcon.  We've written about one of our favorite fan theories, which goes in depth on why Rey is Obi-Wan Kenobi's granddaughter, and we've heard everything from she's Han and Leia's daughter to a descendant of Emperor Palpatine to some sort of Force twin of Anakin Skywalker. However, the most obvious answer may actually be the one that's correct: Rey is Luke Skywalker's daughter. A new video from YouTuber The Stupendous Wave goes into greater detail as to why Rey is Luke's...

Comics on Film: 5 'Wolverine' Stories That Could Make Great Movies

Posted: 29 Jan 2016 03:00 PM PST

Recently we updated you on the status of the upcoming third solo Wolverine film, which is slated to be actor Hugh Jackman's final outing as the world's most famous X-Man. Here at Comics on Film, we tend to think pretty highly of Jackman's turn as the ol' Canucklehead, especially when we ranked him as the second greatest superhero performer ever, second only to Christopher Reeve's iconic turn as Superman. As the new Wolverine film gets ready to roll -- with a soon-to-start shooting schedule and a release date slated for March of 2017 -- it still remains largely shrouded in mystery. We don't really have much of an idea concerning where the story will take Jackman for his final ride as Logan, or whether or not it will...

Watch Kevin Spacey As a Cat in 'Nine Lives' Trailer

Posted: 29 Jan 2016 01:30 PM PST

The very silly comedy Look Who's Talking became an unexpected hit back in 1989. Produced for less than $10 million, the movie ended up earning nearly $300 million at the box office worldwide. Much of that success can be credited to the brilliant idea to have Bruce Willis as the incongruous voice of the newborn baby Mikey. Hearing Willis wisecracking throughout the movie, much as he did in 1988's Die Hard, made it a memorable experience. Since then, many movies have endeavored to duplicate that unexpected success by casting funny actors in comic voice roles and the latest example is on its way to the big screen this summer. Nine Lives follows a straitlaced businessman (Kevin Spacey) who somehow is trapped inside the body of his family's cat. The first trailer gives a...

Movie News: 'Star Wars IX' Will Be Shot on Film, Not Digital; 'Mama' Sequel Coming From 'Starry Eyes' Team

Posted: 29 Jan 2016 12:00 PM PST

Star Wars: Episode IX: Director Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) says that Star Wars: Episode IX will be shot on film stock rather than on digital equipment. "It’s a period film,” he joked. “It happened a long time ago." He added: "There’s something in my brain that says, ‘Well, they didn’t have video cameras then." The movie is scheduled for release in 2019. [Variety]   Mama Sequel: A sequel to horror thriller Mama is on its way from Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch, who cowrote and directed the critically-acclaimed indie drama Starry Eyes. The duo is in final negotiations to rewrite and direct the sequel. The low-budget original starred Jessica Chastain (above) and revolved around two young sisters and an evil...
