Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:   Jerk of the Day: It's no longer safe to leave the internet to avoid spoilers, thanks to a guy who probably ruined Star Wars: The Force Awakens for many by writing out a big plot point on the back of his SUV. Below is the blurred version in case you haven't seen the movie. See it uncensored at Upvoted.   Music Video of the Day: Watch a LuHan music video officially tied to Star Wars: The Force Awakens promoting its Chinese release (via /Film):   Cosplay of the Day: And here's one more Star Wars thing: Chewbacca doing his laundry (via Fashionably Geek):   Filmmaker Parody of the Day: The latest "if Wes Anderson directed..." spoof comes...

The Next 'Chronicles of Narnia' Movie Will Be a Unique Reboot

Posted: 13 Jan 2016 09:30 PM PST

There are seven books in C.S. Lewis' beloved The Chronicles of Narnia series. They've been published all over the world, translated into dozens of languages and sold over 100 million copies since first published in 1949. It's safe to say that the fantasy series about children discovering a gateway to a magical kingdom is very, very popular. The live-action movies that were adapted from the books, however, haven't been quite as universally embraced. 2005's franchise kick-off The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe did exceptionally well with over $745 million in global box office. The two sequels since then, though, have each failed to come close to that bar. Neither Prince Caspian or The Voyage of the Dawn Treader were outright bombs, but CGI talking lions and...

DVD Obscura: The New Indie and International Movies You Need to Watch

Posted: 13 Jan 2016 07:30 PM PST

New Indie: The actress and director behind one of my favorite movies of the decade, Frances Ha, reteamed for Mistress America (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment), another comedy about a woman old enough to know better but still hanging on to the flibbertigibbetiness of her early 20s. Hey, if Seth Rogen can make a career out of aging slackers who find it challenging to put down the bong and pick up a diaper bag, why shouldn’t Greta Gerwig be able to make the most of out of the female equivalent? Gerwig co-wrote this charming tale with director Noah Baumbach, and it’s a smart and breezy look at two fascinating characters: the slightly madcap Brooke (Gerwig), who’s always got big plans, and college student Tracy (Lola Kirke), who’s not above exploiting...

There's a Hotline to Call When You Want Your Movie to Be Scientifically Accurate

Posted: 13 Jan 2016 06:00 PM PST

Every sci-fi movie made these days has to put up with scrutiny from Neil deGrasse Tyson. And on top of his public criticisms, there are experts like Nerdist's Kyle Hill, MythBusters and others around the web and on YouTube exploring the scientific accuracy of everything from The Martian, which did aim for realism, to Star Wars, which has always been pure fantasy. Well, Hollywood is aware of the pressure to get things right, or at least "plausible-ish," and they're in contact with a bunch of scientists willing to help them out. For free. About 2,700 scientists, in fact, are on call as part of the nonprofit-funded Science and Entertainment Exchange, according to a story in The Wall Street Journal. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice screenwriter David S. Goyer...

Amber Heard Joins the 'Aquaman' and 'Justice League' Movies

Posted: 13 Jan 2016 04:39 PM PST

Amber Heard is an actress who's always been right on the cusp of breaking out in a much bigger way. She's pretty fantastic in genre movies (see Drive Angry, Zombieland, Machete Kills), and lately she's been flirting with more prestigious fare (see The Danish Girl). Now comes confirmation that Heard's star status is about to take a more heroic jump, with The Wrap reporting that she's in talks to star as Aquaman's (Jason Momoa) love interest Mera in the 2018 Aquaman movie, with her introduction coming in 2017's Justice League film. Mera is kind of a big deal and Queen of Atlantis, not to mention Aquaman's main squeeze. Among her powers is the ability to control water, and she's been a central figure in the Aquaman comics since the '60s. Zack...

The Geek Beat: What if the Oscars Only Nominated Geek Movies?

Posted: 13 Jan 2016 03:00 PM PST

The 88th Academy Awards nominations will be announced this week, revealing the movies, actors, and creative teams in the running to receive the industry's highest honor for filmmakers and their work. And if history has shown us what to expect, there's a good chance that the geekier side of Hollywood won't be overly-represented in the list of nominees. Still, there's a lot of ground to cover when the Academy Awards committee selects its annual nominees – and a lot of genres filled with fantastic films – so we can't really blame them for overlooking some of our favorite geeky movies. But what if the pool of Academy Award nominees was limited to the previous year's crop of sci-fi, fantasy, and superhero movies? In a world where geeky movies get...

Who Are Rey's Parents in 'Star Wars'? J.J. Abrams Knows

Posted: 13 Jan 2016 01:30 PM PST

Recently, our own Erik Davis explained a fascinating fan theory about Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Rey (Daisy Ridley) demonstrates a burgeoning ability to use the Force, as made clear through her connection to Luke Skywalker's old lightsaber. Combined with other evidence, the theory is that Rey is the granddaughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi. That raises other questions, though, such as the identity of Rey's grandmother and also her parents. Since we have to wait until May 26, 2017, to see Star Wars: Episode VIII, that gives us plenty of time to debate those and other questions. At least one person, however, already knows the answers: J.J. Abrams. "I know quite a bit," said Abrams recently, as reported by THR. Referring to Rian Johnson, writer and director of Star...
