Kevin Smith Says Ben Affleck May Be 'the Best Batman' Ever Posted: Superhero fans have been waiting for what feels like forever for the release of "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." Now, with the flick only weeks away from release, Kevin Smith has promised that Ben Affleck's Batman will be worth the wait -- and may be the best iteration of the hero ever seen on the big screen. Smith spoke with Variety this week about "Batman v Superman" while promoting his latest film, "Yoga Hosers," at Sundance. The director said that Affleck's take on the iconic character reminds him of the hero as depicted in Frank Miller's graphic novel "The Dark Knight Returns," which Smith considers the seminal work about the Caped Crusader. "So right away, he's the best-looking Batman we've ever seen," Smith said of Affleck. "And he's moving the way the character moves in the comics, punching out six people in the span of two seconds. So [director] Zack Snyder is kind of nailing that version of it." But Smith added that the action sequences aren't the most difficult aspect of portraying the character. "The hardest thing to nail about Batman is Bruce Wayne, because that's where you've got no mask and that's where you've got to be a human being, and not just somebody who's punching people," Smith explained. "But that dude is Bruce Wayne, so he's born to play that role. From everything I've seen so far that's come out, I think he'll be our best Batman. And I ain't just saying that 'cause I know the guy. I haven't spoken to him in years. But I've always loved him as an actor." The director also recalled that years ago, when Affleck was first offered the lead in the now much-maligned "Daredevil" movie, he hesitated, because he always wanted to play Batman instead. Smith said that he counseled his friend to take the "Daredevil" part, since Smith didn't think another Batman movie would ever be made. After that flick flopped, Affleck swore off superhero roles, telling Smith, "If anybody ever wants me to wear a costume again, I don't want to do it." But his latest comic book gamble may just pay off. "Now it looks like he is the best Batman we've seen so far," Smith said. Audiences will get to judge for themselves when "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" hits theaters on March 25. [via: Variety] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Straight Outta Compton' Star Corey Hawkins Lands '24: Legacy' Lead Posted: Up and coming star Corey Hawkins, who already has a hit movie and hit TV series under his belt, just landed another high-profile gig: The lead in Fox's upcoming "24" reboot, "24: Legacy." The network revealed Monday that Hawkins -- who played Dr. Dre in summer smash "Straight Outta Compton," and who has a recurring role as Alexandria supply runner Heath on AMC's "The Walking Dead" -- will play Eric Carter on "Legacy," a former Army Ranger whose past comes back to haunt him, who then seeks out the help of "24" agency CTU, the former home of Jack Bauer (Keifer Sutherland). "There's a time jump, a new organization, a completely different story," said Fox co-chairman and CEO Dana Walden at the Television Critics Association press tour last week. "It's a contemporary story about the potential to activate sleeper cells in the United States. There are nods in the pilot to prior CTU agents, but no ongoing characters." That means that Sutherland isn't expected to appear on the new series, though he may serve as an executive producer on the reboot alongside the original creators. Fox has only ordered a pilot so far, though if it's picked up, "Legacy" is planned as an event series with 12 episodes, similar to the run of the most recent "24" iteration, 2014's "24: Live Another Day." Jon Hamm's Name Is Spelled Wrong on His Golden Globe Posted: It's been eight years since the 2007-2008 writers strike shook up Hollywood, disrupting the production of television and films for 100 days. Among the casualties of the strike was the 65th Golden Globe Awards, which skipped the traditional telecast in favor of a press conference announcing the winners in January 2008. Jon Hamm was among those victorious on that odd night, though as the actor recently revealed, his award is distinctive for a different reason. In an interview with Vanity Fair this week at the Sundance Film Festival, Hamm discussed his win, which came for the first season of "Mad Men." It remained the only awards recognition the actor received for the series's seven-season run until he took home the Emmy in 2015 (and received another Globe just last month), but unfortunately for the actor, there was something a little off about his statuette. The award, which Hamm said was sent to him after the press conference "in the mail," has a plaque on which the Hollywood Foreign Press Association "spelled my name wrong," he told VF. "I was like, 'Oh man, guys, there's no H,'" Hamm recalled of seeing "John Hamm" scrawled on his statuette. "I haven't gotten the little plaque to stick on the new one yet, so hopefully they'll figure out ... it's J-O-N. Or Jonathan." We can only hope. Show Don Draper some respect, HFPA! Chris Rock Rewriting Oscars Monologue to Address #OscarsSoWhite Posted: Amid calls for Chris Rock to step down in protest as host of the Oscars, the comedian is reportedly set on using his platform to address the Academy's diversity problems head-on, and is currently completely rewriting his monologue to reflect the #OscarsSoWhite backlash. Reginald Hudlin, the producer of this year's Academy Awards telecast, revealed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that Rock would not be giving up his hosting duties. Instead, Hudlin told ET that when Rock heard about the planned boycotts of stars including Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith, he decided to scrap his already-finished monologue and start from scratch. "Chris is hard at work. He and his writing staff locked themselves in a room," Hudlin told ET. "As things got a little provocative and exciting, he said, 'I'm throwing out the show I wrote and writing a new show.'" According to the producer, the Academy has given Rock its blessing to address the diversity backlash, and Rock plans on doing so. "You should expect [#OscarsSoWhite jokes]," Hudlin promised ET. "And, yes, the Academy is ready for him to do that. They're excited about him doing that. They know that's what we need. They know that's what the public wants, and we deliver what the people want." In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Rock's publicist, Leslie Sloane, attempted to walk back some of Hudlin's remarks, telling the trade, "neither he nor anyone else speaks for Chris." "Chris has made no decisions about the content of the show," Sloane's statement continued. "All will be revealed on February 28th." We can't wait to hear what he has to say. Matthew Perry Doesn't Remember Three Years of 'Friends' Posted: Matthew Perry achieved comedy icon status as Chandler Bing on "Friends," but the true story of his substance abuse is anything but funny. The actor is now working in London, which is why he's not in that epic "Friends" reunion photo, and he recently talked to BBC Radio 2 about his past, present, and future work. Matthew was asked about his least favorite "Friends" episode and he answered, "Oh my goodness. ... I think the answer is 'I don't remember three years of it.'" One of the hosts noted that he was a little out of it, and Matthew agreed, saying, "a little bit of the time, I was a little out of it, yeah." They shared stories of famous people doing their jobs while high, adding that they don't recommend that anyone try that at home. "Anyway," Matthew said, "my answer to your question is 'Somewhere between season 3 and 6.'" Unfortunately it's not breaking news that Matthew struggled with substance abuse and it affected him even while he was playing Chandler. Back in 2013, Matthew was on the cover of People magazine under the headline "My Life As an Addict: Getting Sober and Helping Others," talking about his years-long battle with addictions to alcohol and Vicodin. He said eventually "something clicked" and he was ready to get help. After that, he started helping others get the same help. On a more positive note, Matthew was asked how much it would cost to get the "Friends" cast together to shoot more episodes. "Oh, I don't know what the price would be," he told BBC Radio 2. "I think the actors would actually be open to it. I do. I think we'd be open to doing something. Some kind of TV special, I don't know about a movie." He said it's tough because they ended on such a high note, so they'd have to be careful not to do something that would ruin that. But he said the actors have talked about it at dinner and other times they've hung out. "It's a really good group. There isn't a jerk in the group and that really saved us for 10 years." What's New on Netflix, TV, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: January 25-31 Posted: At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered. Spike Lee's clever modern-day adaptation of the Greek play "Lysistrata" comes out on DVD and Blu-ray January 26. After the murder of a child by a stray bullet, a group of women in Chicago's Southside fight back in a unique way -- abstaining from sex until their men agree to end the senseless cycle of violence. Nick Cannon, Wesley Snipes, Teyonah Parris, Jennifer Hudson, Steve Harris, Harry Lennix, D.B. Sweeney, and Angela Bassett star in the drama. The home release includes "The Making of Chi-Raq" featurette, deleted scenes, extended scenes, and a music video for "We Gotta Do Better" from Kevon Carter. "Burnt" Bradley Cooper plays a bad boy chef opposite Sienna Miller in this dramedy about food, love, and second chances. The DVD and Blu-ray include feature commentary with director John Wells and executive chef consultant Marcus Wareing; deleted scenes; and the featurettes "Breakfast of Champs," "Drugging the Food Critic," "Thanks for Dining at the Langham," "Helene's Ex," "Cooking at Helene's," and "Burnt: In the Kitchen with Bradley Cooper." "unREAL" Season 1 Lifetime's no-holds-barred "Bachelor"-esque scripted series peeks behind the curtain to show how reality TV shows are really made. Shiri Appleby and Constance Zimmer star as the morally questionable producers of the dating show "Everlasting," with Freddie Stroma as the in-over-his-head bachelor who is meant to find true love -- or at least truly big ratings. The DVD release, out January 26, includes a dozen detailed behind-the-scenes featurettes. New on Netflix It's the end of the month, and that tends to be a slower time for Netflix releases. The good news is that a ton of new titles should be dropping on February 1. For now, why not honor the coldest time of the year by binge-watching the BBC/Discovery nature documentary series and the making-of feature. They are all available for streaming as of January 28. "Frozen Planet" (2011) "Frozen Planet: On Thin Ice" (2011) "Frozen Planet: The Epic Journey" (2011) "The Making of Frozen Planet" (2012) New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only "Crimson Peak" Curl up in the dark with director Guillermo del Toro's intense Gothic thriller, which is out on Digital HD January 26. Mia Wasikowska stars as a sheltered young woman who heads to a remote English estate with an alluring aristocrat played by Tom Hiddleston. Jessica Chastain and Charlie Hunnam co-star in the haunted house mystery, which arrives on Blu-ray/DVD February 9. The discs will include a bunch of special features, so keep that in mind. "Truth" Cate Blanchett, Robert Redford, Topher Grace, Elisabeth Moss, and Bruce Greenwood star in this independent drama based on producer Mary Mapes's memoir, "Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power." The true story follows Dan Rather (Robert Redford) and Mary Mapes's (Cate Blanchett) investigation into a sitting president's military service, and the ensuing scandal and fallout. "Truth" is out on Digital January 26 and Blu-ray/DVD February 2. Digital exclusives -- only available with iTunes Extras and Vudu Extras+ -- include deleted scenes and the featurette "The Reason For Being." TV Worth Watching "Grease: Live" (Sunday on FOX at 7 p.m.) Hopelessly devote yourself to this live adaptation of the iconic musical, which will play out over three hours on January 31. "Dancing With the Stars" pro/judge Julianne Hough stars as Sandy, with Aaron Tveit as Danny, and Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo. It's live, so ... anything can happen. "The Magicians" (Monday on Syfy at 9 p.m.) Syfy's newest original series, based on the fantasy novels by Lev Grossman, starts January 25 with "Unauthorized Magic." In the premiere, best friends Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) and Julia Wicker (Stella Maeve) are mysteriously recruited to take an entrance exam to Brakebills University, a secret institution for magical pedagogy. "Outsiders" (Tuesday on WGN America at 9 p.m.) David Morse stars in WGN America's third original series, following "Salem" and "Manhattan." "Outsiders" follows a struggle for power in the rugged hills of the Appalachia as the Farrell Clan -- a tight-knit family of renegades who have lived atop the rugged Shay Mountain for more than 200 years -- fight to defend their land and way of life from the town below. "You, Me and the Apocalypse" (Thursday on NBC at 8 p.m.) A priest, a convict, and a bank manager come together at the end of the world in this British-American sci-fi dramedy about the last days of mankind. Rob Lowe stars as rebellious, foul-mouthed priest Father Jude. Jenna Fischer plays Rhonda, a mild-mannered librarian sent to maximum security prison for a crime she didn't commit. Megan Mullally plays Leanne, an unhinged white supremacist that Rhonda unwillingly befriends. Joel Fry, Paterson Joseph, Pauline Quirke, and Kyle Stoller co-star. 'X-Files' Revival Debuts to Big Ratings, Despite Annoying Football Delay Posted: "The X-Files" fans waited 14 years for the TV show to return, but it was those last 20 minutes that were the hardest. Sunday night turned into jocks vs. nerds online, as frustrated East Coast alien-lovers had to wait through football's overrun to watch the premiere of the six-episode revival. Some fans weren't able to see the show live and wanted to tape it for later, but only taped half of what they wanted. Bah!
That's pretty darn good -- even if it ends up adjusted down a bit. A quick look at past "X-Files" premieres shows Season 1 debuted to 12 million viewers, followed by 16 million in Season 2, just under 20 million for Season 3, 21 million in Season 4, a whopping 27 million for Season 5, 20 million for Season 6, just under 18 million for Season 7, just under 16 million for Season 8, and just over 10 million for Season 9. That final season premiere was in November 2001, so it's impressive that 13 million of us STILL want to believe. The new "X-Files" moves into its new timeslot tonight, Monday, January 25, with Episode 2, "Founder's Mutation," airing at 8 p.m. on Fox. Will you be there to see what happens next? Daniel Radcliffe Reacts to Walkouts During His Farting Corpse Film Premiere Posted: Sean Penn would probably just say he had "minor traveler's flatulence," but Daniel Radcliffe's character in the new movie "Swiss Army Man" is a farting corpse whose many, many toots help Paul Dano's suicidal castaway reach safety. (Turn away, Ginny Weasley!)
If you think DanRad and company are upset by the reactions, you're dead (and tootin'!) wrong. Co-writer-director Daniel Kwan even repeated some of the "amazing" headlines, like "Daniel Radcliffe Farting Corpse Movie Leads to Walkouts," telling The Hollywood Reporter, "I couldn't have written them better myself." Ecstatic 'The Big Bang Theory' Star Shares 'Friends' Reunion Photo Posted: Talk about a money shot. Bazinga! The stars from two massively successful sitcoms -- "Friends" and "The Big Bang Theory" -- gathered for one epic photo Sunday night. Most of the "Friends" cast reunited to tape NBC's "Must See TV: A Tribute to James Burrows," and they were joined by other small-screeners, including the cast of the biggest comedy on TV right now, "The Big Bang Theory." As it turns out, TBBT stars are just "Friends" fangirls and fanboys like the rest of us! Check out the group photo shared by both Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki. In the shot, you can see "Friends" stars David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, and Lisa Kudrow, posing with TBBT's Cuoco, Galecki, Simon Helberg, and Jim Parsons. (Matthew Perry is the Debbie Downer who ruined the chance for an official "Friends" reunion, since he's in London. However, he'll introduce the crew when the special airs on February 21.) Kaley Cuoco had the best caption to capture the moment: "Ummmm NIGHT MADE. Can't breathe #friends meets #bbt @bigbangtheory_cbs I died and went to heaven." Breathe into Sheldon's paper bag, Penny! Here's the full "Friends" + "Big Bang" shot: Johnny Galecki shared the same photo, writing, "And then this happened. #TBBT #friends." Don't even try to act casual, man, we know you squeed like a tween! What do you think these stars chatted about between taping? Perhaps they toasted to their shared $1 million-per-episode contracts? These are the 11 times their love gave us all the feels -- and then some. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
New 'Labyrinth' Writer to Angry Fans: No One Is 'Rebooting' Bowie Movie Posted: Fans of David Bowie's "Labyrinth" defended his honor this past weekend, but that defense may have been premature. The Goblin King has only been gone for two weeks, and it felt like much too soon to be seeing headlines like "David Bowie's 'Labyrinth' to Get Reboot With 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Co-Writer." The Hollywood Reporter got that exclusive on January 22, writing, "Labyrinth, Jim Henson's 1986 fantasy film starring David Bowie, is getting rebooted for the 21st century." They added that TriStar closed a deal with The Jim Henson Co. to produce a new version and hired "Guardians of the Galaxy" co-writer Nicole Perlman to write the script. That led to multiple postings across the Interwebz, followed by fan outrage at the very idea of remaking the '80s classic, and disgust at the timing of the announcement, just days after Bowie's death. However, writer Nicole Perlman took to Twitter to clarify that 1) it's not a reboot, and 2) the movie has been in discussions for a while now, long before anyone even knew Bowie was ill. (Here's a 2014 Moviefone story on sequel plans.) That said, it's still not clear what exactly they are doing with this movie. She did say "continuation," though, so it sounds like they are still aiming for some kind of sequel. Question: Is Jennifer Connelly gong to be involved, or will they perhaps follow the adventures of that baby who is no longer a baby? Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. New 'Batman v Superman' TV Spots, Poster, and Cameo Revealed Posted: Who will win? That's the tagline on the new "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" poster, and it's leading some fans to offer suggestions like "Alfred" or "Neither." Fans get to win when the movie is finally released on March 25, and we start the DC train that keeps rolling with "Suicide Squad," "Justice League," etc. The DC world is in full promotion mode, releasing a new "Batman v Superman" poster and two new TV spots. Also, Entertainment Weekly confirmed that "The Walking Dead" star Lauren Cohan (Maggie) will have a brief cameo in the movie as Martha Wayne, mother of Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne -- although we have to assume she'll play the mother of a younger Bruce in flashback. Here's the new face-off poster: As for TV spots, one focuses on Bruce Wayne and the other highlights Henry Cavill's Clark Kent, and both clips show the guys talking crap about each other behind their backs. (Superheroes, they're just like us -- in middle school!) Here's Bruce Wayne getting wicked intense with Alfred (Jeremy Irons) about the mysterious newcomers in town. ("She's the one that brought the war to us," "I'm going to have to destroy him.") And here's Clark Kent getting shot down by Perry White (Laurence Fishburne) at the Daily Planet, when Kent wants to take on the "this Bat vigilante." But then he seems to go vigilante himself as Superman to tell Batman, "the Bat is dead. Bury it." Can't we all just get along? It seems inevitable that they will get along eventually, we just have to see how it plays out when the movie arrives March 25. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook.
