James Gunn Wanted a David Bowie Cameo in 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' Posted: The world is still reeling from the loss of singer, actor, and fashion icon David Bowie, and among the many famous mourners is James Gunn. Here's the Young Han Solo 'Star Wars' Spinoff Actor Shortlist Posted: Thousands of young men have been vying for the chance to play a young Han Solo in Disney's upcoming Solo-centric "Star Wars" spinoff flick. Now, according to a new report, that number has been whittled down to less than a dozen. Variety reports that Disney and Lucasfilm are close to making a decision on who will fill Harrison Ford's iconic shoes to play a younger version of the roguish hero, and have narrowed the field of potential leading men considerably in recent days. Per Variety's sources, the lucky few remaining on the Solo shortlist include Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, Jack Reynor ("Transformers: Age of Extinction"), Scott Eastwood, Logan Lerman, Emory Cohen ("Brooklyn"), and Blake Jenner (Richard Linklater's upcoming "Everybody Wants Some"). Casting is expected to be announced sometime in the next few weeks, and according to Variety, there's a good reason for such an accelerated decision: Though the Han Solo project isn't slated to start shooting until early next year, the actor playing Solo may be popping up in the first "Star Wars" spinoff flick, "Rogue One," which is due in theaters this December. That film is still in the late stages of production, so there's time to insert the chosen Solo star into the flick for a brief cameo, which would then set up his own spinoff. (Variety compares the process to the one used by Disney and Marvel for the introduction of the new Spider-Man, Tom Holland, who will first appear in "Captain America: Civil War" before headlining a standalone flick.) Producers had reportedly been looking for an actor in his mid-20s to play the part originated by a 35-year-old Ford in "Star Wars: A New Hope." The flick will reportedly take place sometime between the events of "Episode III" and "Episode IV." The as-yet-untitled project is due in theaters on May 25, 2018. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet Had a 'Titanic' Reunion at the Golden Globes Posted: Leonardo DiCaprio may have made headlines for his hilarious, eyebrow-raising side-eye of Lady Gaga at the Golden Globes, but there was another small moment featuring the actor that caught our eye last night. 'Space Oddity' Astronaut Chris Hadfield Honors David Bowie: 'Goodbye Starman' Posted: Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield shot to fame a few years ago thanks to a clever cover of David Bowie's classic tune "Space Oddity," which Hadfield recorded aboard the International Space Station. In the wake of Bowie's sudden death this weekend at age 69, Hadfield shared another tribute to the legendary artist. The astronaut mourned the musician on Twitter, where he posted a message praising Bowie for his pioneering place in pop culture history. "Ashes to ashes, dust to stardust," Hadfield wrote. "Your brilliance inspired us all. Goodbye Starman." Though Hadfield himself didn't re-post his "Space Oddity" video, many other media outlets did, and it's not hard to see why: The commander's poignant take on the iconic song was reportedly one of Bowie's favorite cover versions of the tune. When Hadfield first posted the song in 2013, rights issues briefly took it offline; thanks to Bowie's vocal support of the cover, it eventually returned YouTube. (The video's description now reads, in part, "Rest in peace, Starman.")Check it out again below. RIP, Bowie. The stars indeed look very different today. AMC Shares 'Fear the Walking Dead' Season 2 First Look, Premiere Date Posted: There was a huge build-up to "The Walking Dead" companion series/spinoff "Fear the Walking Dead," but we only got six episodes in 2015. It felt like the story was just getting started, and we'll see things pick up -- on the high seas -- when Season 2 premieres Sunday, April 10 at 9 p.m. on AMC. AMC just released some new details, and the first-look photo above (here's a larger version), while adding the discouraging note that the 15 episodes of Season 2 will air in two parts -- the first seven episodes will start in April, with the remaining eight episodes arriving "later in 2016." Sigh. It's the dreaded mid-season break again, just like the main show (which returns February 14). FTWD Season 2 started filming last month in the Baja peninsula in Mexico at Baja Studios, which AMC described as "home to some of the greatest ocean-set films in recent years." Obviously that -- and the yacht-set first photo -- hint to how much time we'll be spending on the water this year. You may recall that Season 1 ended with the characters planning to jump on Strand's yacht to see if they could escape the zombie apocalypse that way. Guessing not! Watch James Franco Head to '11.22.63' in Hulu's Epic New Trailer Posted: After sharing some brief teasers, Hulu finally gifted fans with an official trailer for "11.22.63," an original series based on the truly fantastic novel by Stephen King. When Uncle Steve is good, he's REALLY good! James Franco plays high school English teacher Jake Epping, who travels back in time to the title's historically pivotal date to try and prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The task is not an easy one, for several reasons, including the past's strong resistance to change. The eight-part event series premieres on Hulu on Presidents Day, February 15, 2016. As you can see in the trailer below, co-stars include Chris Cooper, Josh Duhamel, T.R. Knight, Cherry Jones, Sarah Gadon, Lucy Fry, George MacKay, and Daniel Webber. Check out the full trailer: You may have seen Stephen King's set photo from this past summer, with star James Franco and one of King's fellow executive producers, J.J. Abrams. Yep, that J.J. Abrams. Director Kevin Macdonald ("Last King of Scotland") also directed and executive produced the first two hours. This thing has "quality" written all over it, so expectations are high. If you haven't read the book yet, you have some time to catch up before the series starts. It's worth it. Want more stuff like this? What's New on TV, Netflix, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: January 11-17 Posted: At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered. New on DVD and Blu-ray "The Martian" Unfortunately, the poster on this one was misleading -- they never actually let us bring Matt Damon home after seeing the movie. (His wife would probably disapprove.) You can, however, take home Ridley Scott's acclaimed Mars mission movie "The Martian" on DVD and Blu-ray starting January 12. The Blu-ray editions include more than 90 minutes of special features, including five "in-world" pieces, and featurettes from the cast, director, and producers. There's also a gag reel, which should be fun. "Hotel Transylvania 2" Drac's Pack is back in the sequel to "Hotel Transylvania," as they put the son of Mavis and Johnny through a "monster-in-training" boot camp to bring out his vampire side. The DVD, out January 12, includes feature commentary with the director and vocal cast, plus Fifth Harmony's music video. The Blu-ray also includes deleted scenes, a sing-along, and five behind-the-scenes featurettes. "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" Tim Roth and Gary Oldman are the titular Shakespeare characters in this brilliant retelling of "Hamlet" from the perspective of the two ill-fated sidekicks. Believe it or not, the movie is now celebrating its 25th anniversary, and to celebrate the milestone, it will be released on Blu-ray for the first time. Watch it on DVD, Blu-ray, or Digital on January 12. Don't miss this absolute classic. New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only "The Submarine Kid" Finn Wittrock ("American Horror Story") co-wrote the script for this timely film about a U.S. Marine (Wittrock) who returns home from his third difficult tour and struggles to acclimate back into civilian life. Military veterans worked in front of and behind the camera to create the drama, which co-stars Emilie de Ravin ("Once Upon a Time'). "The Submarine Kid" is out on Digital HD and On Demand January 12 . Check out this exclusive clip with Wittrock and de Ravin: "Black Mass" Johnny Depp goes full Southie as Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger in this star-studded crime drama from director Scott Cooper. There's Joel Edgerton as FBI Agent John Connolly; Benedict Cumberbatch as Whitey's brother, State Senator Billy Bulger; Jesse Plemons as Whitey's main henchman, Kevin Weeks; plus Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard, and more. The Digital HD release is January 12, but you'll have to wait for February 16 for the discs. "Goosebumps" Jack Black stars in this fun family film, based on the worldwide best-selling books by R.L. Stine. When Zach (Dylan Minnette) unwittingly unleashes magical monsters on the town, he must team with his new friends Champ (Ryan Lee), Hannah (Odeya Rush), and Stine (Jack Black) to send the ghouls back where they came from. "Goosebumps" makes its Digital HD debut on January 12; special features include an alternate opening, an alternate ending, deleted scenes, a blooper reel, and more. The Blu-ray and DVD will follow on January 26. New on Netflix "Parks and Recreation" Sing "Byeeeee, Bye, Li'l Sebastian" all over again with the cast of "Parks & Rec" as you rewatch the final season, Season 7, on Netflix. Streaming begins January 13. Nostalgia begins immediately. "Degrassi: The Next Class" Season 1 of this Netflix original series starts January 15; it's a continuation of the popular Canadian high school drama, including "Degrassi" favorites like Olivia Scriven (Maya), Lyle Lettau (Tristan), and Ana Golja (Zoe), while welcoming five new faces: Amir Bageria as Baaz Nahir, Soma Bhatia as Goldi Nahir, Jamie Bloch as Yael Baron, Chelsea Clark as Esme Song, and Dante Scott as Vijay Maraj. Check out the trailer: "The Overnight" Adam Scott ("Parks & Rec") and Taylor Schilling ("Orange Is the New Black") star in this 2015 comedy available on Netflix January 15. The duo play a couple who move with their young son to Los Angeles and meet a mysterious new family at a local park. A family "playdate" with these new friends (played by Jason Schwartzman and Judith Godrèche) and their son becomes increasingly bizarre as the night goes on. TV Worth Watching "Colony" (Thursday on USA Network at 10 p.m.) "Lost" meets "The Walking Dead" in this new USA series from Carlton Cuse and Ryan J. Condal, starring Josh "Sawyer" Holloway and Sarah "Lori" Wayne Callies. The 10 episodes of Season 1 start January 14, with the dystopian sci-fi story set in a not-too-distant future Los Angeles. The city has been occupied by outside forces, dividing the residents -- some have collaborated with the occupation, while others are rebelling and suffering the consequences. Former FBI agent Will Bowman (Holloway) and his wife, Katie (Callies) struggle with how to proceed when separated from their son during the invasion. (Should we scream for "Caaaaarl" or "Waaaaalt"?) "Shadowhunters" (Tuesday on Freeform at 9 p.m.) Freeform (formerly ABC Family) is launching this new series based on "The Mortal Instruments" novels on January 12. Katherine McNamara stars as Clary Fray, who learns that she is a Shadowhunter -- a human-angel hybrid that hunts demons -- after her mother is abducted by a demon. This story may ring a bell if you watched (or just heard of) the 2013 film, "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," starring Lily Collins. "Billions" (Sunday on Showtime at 10 p.m.) Damien Lewis is returning to Showtime, this time as a hedge fund billionaire. His character is a charming 9/11 survivor and seems like a charitable, generous guy -- but in reality he's a criminal thwarting justice. More moral ambiguity for Brody! Paul Giamatti co-stars as the ruthless U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York who has a particular distaste for wealthy criminals who try to buy their way out of justice. So you can imagine how this is going to play out, but watch the 12 Season 1 episodes play out starting January 17. Want more stuff like this? Here's a New 'Suicide Squad' Photo, and Details on Ben Affleck's 'Awesome' Role Posted: While Marvel plans to unite its cinematic universe in "Avengers: Infinity War," DC Comics is busy building its own world of superheroes and supervillains. DC's next major movie title, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," arrives on March 25, followed by the villains of "Suicide Squad" on August 5.
For his own part, Ben Affleck told USA Today he's "bound by nondisclosure clauses a mile long" so he couldn't share specifics about his "Suicide Squad" role. However, he praised the film as "such a cool cousin" to his own, adding, "This thing that is so awesome is somehow related to me, and that was really exciting because it started to feel like a constellation of things, and I've never had that feeling." When Batman starts feeling "a constellation of things," color us intrigued. Are you excited for the next round of DC movies? Want more stuff like this? Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey Are 'Elvis and Nixon' in Wild Comedy Trailer Posted: Kevin Spacey must love playing troubled presidents. He's Frank Underwood on "House of Cards," and now he's Richard Nixon in "Elvis & Nixon," a comedy opening this April with Michael Shannon as Elvis Presley. The first trailer was just released, and even though it's very tongue-in-cheek it purports to be "the untold true story" behind the December 21, 1970, meeting between the King of Rock 'n Roll and President Nixon. That meeting resulted in (seriously?) the most requested photograph in the National Archives. Here's the trailer: Never would've imagined Michael Shannon as Elvis, but that guy can do anything. This thing looks like it will either be a comedy classic or a major miss, but it attracted a lot of stars, so it has potential. The cast includes Evan Peters, Colin Hanks, Ashley Benson, Tate Donovan, and Alex Pettyfer. Amazon Studios and Bleecker Street have scheduled the movie for an April 2016 release. Harrison Ford Dethrones Samuel L. Jackson as U.S. Box Office King Posted: All hail, Han Solo! Thanks to "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," Harrison Ford is now the highest-grossing actor in U.S. box office history. And the guy's 73! Talk about getting better with age. This is one of those lists that rewards longevity, since the more blockbusters you make, the more you rise on the list. If you check out the actor rankings at Box Office Mojo, it's still pretty close at the top, but Harrison is now sitting comfortably at No. 1, with a current (and rising) gross of $4.74 billion. Samuel L. Jackson (age 67) -- whose work in the "Star Wars" prequels, "Jurassic Park," and "The Avengers" films launched him to the top of the list -- was pushed down to No. 2 with a gross of $4.63 billion. However, Sam definitely has the potential to reclaim his throne, since he has a ton of new movies coming out and he tends to land roles in major blockbusters. You can check out the full box office ranking, but here's a snapshot of the top names: The list is for "actors" but they include actresses. It takes a while to find the top woman, though. It's Cameron Diaz at No. 17 with a box office gross of $3.03 billion, just behind Robert De Niro and Anthony Daniels but ahead of Matt Damon, Liam Neeson, and Will Smith. The next woman on the list is Cate Blanchett at No. 24. Considering Harrison Ford is a living legend -- from Indiana Jones to Han Solo and all the smaller but worthy films in between -- we can't say we're mad that he gets to stand for another moment in the box office sun. Congrats, man! [via: EW] Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. %Slideshow-280881% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Leonardo DiCaprio Explains That Awkward Lady Gaga Moment at the Golden Globes Posted: The Internet loves an awkward live reaction shot, and Leonardo DiCaprio delivered during last night's 2016 Golden Globe Awards. Leo was one of the night's big winners for "The Revenant," but many viewers were captivated by his brief brush-by with Lady Gaga when she was heading to the stage to accept her award for Best Actress in a Limited-Series or TV Movie for "American Horror Story: Hotel." Here's what happened on her way to the stage: The eyebrows! The moment instantly went viral, and Entertainment Tonight's Cameron Mathison asked Leo about it right after the show. "Oh lord – that's trending, huh?" Leo said. He offered a simple explanation: "I just didn't know what was passing me, that's all!" So it wasn't anything personal to Lady Gaga, he just got caught in the same situation as a plane's aisle-seat passenger when the flight attendant walks by and kind of side-swipes your arm. The fact that it happened mid-laugh, when he was in the middle of reacting to something else, just makes it more classic. They could probably find a way to arrange the tables so it's not such a tight squeeze ... but nah. This makes it more fun. Want more stuff like this? David Bowie Dies at 69 After 18-Month Cancer Battle, Stars Pay Tribute Posted: It's hard to believe, but we're now living in a world without David Bowie. The music legend died January 10, just two days after both turning 69 and releasing his final album, "Blackstar." After initial hopes that it was just another death hoax, the sad news was slowly confirmed online, including this post on Facebook:
Bowie's son, film director Duncan Jones, further confirmed the sad news, although he didn't elaborate on the star's surprising battle with cancer: According to CNN, Duncan Jones's mother, Bowie's first wife, Angela, is sequestered on the U.K. series "Celebrity Big Brother." Producers told her of Bowie's death off-camera and she chose to stay on the show. Iman, Bowie's wife of 24 years, has yet to release a statement of any kind, but she did tweet birthday wishes for Bowie and a January 10 note that may have been a reference to her late husband. Tributes have been pouring in on Monday, with many musicians honoring David Bowie (born David Jones) as a personal inspiration and hero: In addition to being a music icon, Bowie also had many acting credits to his name -- from "Labyrinth" and "The Man Who Fell to Earth," to playing Nikola Tesla in "The Prestige," Andy Warhol in "Basquiat," Pontius Pilate in "The Last Temptation of Christ," and himself in "Zoolander" and "Extras," among others. Here's to a true legend. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. %Slideshow-267612% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Golden Globes 2016 Recap: 16 Best and Worst Moments Posted: %Slideshow-355272% "Kill me," pleaded Golden Globes emcee Ricky Gervais deep into Sunday night's three-hours-plus awards show. Indeed, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's 73rd annual ceremony seemed like it would go on forever. Still, there were moments that were either hilarious, appalling, or poignant enough to enliven the festivities. Here are the best and worst of those moments, which are certain to linger in the memory for eons or until the Oscar nominations are announced, whichever comes first. Golden Globes 2016: Here's What Ricky Gervais Said to Mel Gibson That Got Him Bleeped Posted: The censors at NBC were working overtime during Sunday night's Golden Globes ceremony, bleeping seemingly every other word uttered by presenters and winners throughout the telecast. But one especially saucy exchange had us particularly intrigued: Just what did Ricky Gervais say to Mel Gibson that was so foul, the entire question was muted? Turns out it was a pretty NSFW query concerning Gibson's infamous alcohol-fueled meltdown back in 2006, in which he was arrested for drunk driving, went on an anti-Semitic tirade, and called a law enforcement officer a sexist name. Not exactly the stuff that comedy routines are made of. But when Gibson showed up on Sunday to present the highlight reel for Best Picture nominee "Mad Max: Fury Road," Gervais couldn't help but bring up the uncomfortable subject, leading to the bleeped-out exchange that had audiences scrambling to read the host's lips. Social media sleuths (and some viewers watching in foreign countries, where the broadcast was aired bleep free) figured it out soon enough: Gervais asked Gibson, "What the f--k does 'sugar tits' even mean?" Truly, a question for the ages. Check out the uncensored clip below.
