Netflix Unveils Trailers for Royal Drama 'The Crown,' Musical Drama 'The Get Down' Posted: 2015 was a banner year for Netflix, with the streaming service debuting acclaimed series like "Jessica Jones," "Master of None," "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," and the current binge craze, "Making a Murderer." This year might top that -- Netflix has a couple dozen new original series in the pipeline, including "The Crown" and "The Get Down," which both got sneak peeks unveiled today. "The Crown" follows the British royal family in the 20th century, with a focus on Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy). From the trailer, the period drama seems to begin with the abdication of her uncle, KIng Edward VIII, through the reign of her father, George VI ("Mad Men" star Jared Harris), and follows Elizabeth as she marries Prince Phillip (Matt Smith) and is crowned as queen. "The Get Down" is a musical drama, created by Baz Luhrmann and Shawn Ryan, set in 1970s New York City, and tracks a group of teenagers as they deal with crime, violence, and urban decay, all while listening to the music of the time -- hip-hop, soul, disco, and punk. Both series are set to debut for binge-watching pleasure sometime in 2016. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Boyz II Men Joins 'Grease: Live' to Sing 'Beauty School Dropout' Posted: Meet your new Teen Angel(s): Boyz II Men. The '90s R&B boy band has joined the cast of Fox's "Grease: Live" to perform the classic song "Beauty School Dropout." The silky-voiced trio — Shawn Stockman, Nathan Morris, and Wanya Morris — will step into the shoes of Frankie Avalon, who played Teen Angel in the 1978 movie. They'll appear to sing to Frenchy (Carly Rae Jepsen) after a mishap in beauty school leaves her downcast. Boyz II Men previewed their "Grease" role with a short video on Twitter: Julianne Hough stars as the sweet, innocent Sandy, with Aaron Tveit as tough, golden-hearted Danny. The three-hour musical event also features Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo, Carlos PenaVega as Kenickie, Keke Palmer as Marty, and Ana Gasteyer as Principal McGee."Grease: Live" airs Sunday, January 31 at 7 p.m. on Fox. Ty Burrell Just Learned the Shocking Story of His Black Slave Ancestors Posted: Talk about a "Modern Family"! "Finding Your Roots" host Henry Louis Gates, Jr. dropped that quip on Ty Burrell during last night's Season 3 premiere, "The Stories We Tell." Actor Ty Burrell, political organizer Donna Brazile, and artist Kara Walker all discovered details from their pasts, with the tie of slavery binding their surprising stories. Kara Walker, whose artwork depicts the horrific legacy of slavery, discovered one of her great-great grandparents was a white man, and Ty Burrell learned that he has black ancestors. Ty's great-great grandmother, Susannah Weeks (that's her in the pic above), was "a free person of color" who applied, on her own, for The Homestead Act. She traveled from Tennessee to Oregon to start a new life, and pulled it off. Ty was suitably impressed with this "badass" woman who brought his family to Oregon, where the actor was later born. Through Census records and other documents, Ty also learned the name of Susannah's mother -- Ty's great-great-great grandmother -- Nellie Mask. Ty further learned that Nellie's mother was a slave named Jane who was impregnated at age 13 by her white 33-year-old slave "master," Dudley Mask. Ugh. Ty was disgusted to learn his fourth great-grandmother was raped by his fourth great-grandfather. "I want to just be with the heroines of the story," Ty said, but he knows he can't erase his rapist slave-owning ancestor from the family history. Watch the full "Finding Your Roots" episode below. It's very enlightening and makes you think about your own history: Want more stuff like this? Posted: %Slideshow-354131% It seems quaint that there was a 1984 movie called "Revenge of the Nerds." Decades later, it's clear that the nerds have won. They dominate movies and TV with their superhero and sci-fi sagas. They've made Comic-Con the central pop cultural event of the year. They got us all to care about Jedi knights and hobbits and Lannisters. They built the hardware and the software that you're using to read this article. Of course, TV nerds have come a long way since they first attracted notice 40 years ago on "Happy Days." Back then, a nerd was simply someone who wasn't cool. Now, it's someone whose braininess and obsessiveness (usually about sci-fi or other genre storytelling) give then an intensity that makes them seem socially awkward and uncool. Or used to -- since, as we've seen, nerd is the new cool. Here, then, are the nerds we've loved on TV over the years, a species whose evolution has made us realize how indispensable they are. The 'Project Runway All Stars' 2016 Cast Is Very Surprising Posted: Daniel Franco, where did you go? Not far, apparently, 'cause he's back -- again! The very first designer ever auf-ed from "Project Runway," only to be cut early in Season 2, must be hoping the third time's the charm in "Project Runway All Stars" Season 5. Entertainment Weekly just shared the list of new "All Stars" designers, plus the guest judges, and the premiere date: Thursday, February 11 at 9 p.m. ET on Lifetime. This cast raises some eyebrows for a few reasons. One, they included two designers from "Under the Gunn," which EW labeled "Season 12.5." (Did you ever consider that show Season 12.5?) Also, there's no one from this past summer's Season 14 -- no Kelly Dempsey, no Edmond Newton, no anyone -- and no "Junior" designers either, which they could conceivably add if they're going to consider "Under the Gunn" PR canon. (Just bad timing, perhaps, with the shooting of this season?) This time, there is only one winner in the mix, Dom Streater, which limits the potential for more two-time winners (which is good), but why have her join the show at all if she's the only past champion? Also, the cast includes the WAY too angry Ken Laurence of Season 12, and fairly early departures like Mitchell Perry of Season 13 and Season 1 & 2's Daniel Franco. At least we have Kini Zamora, who is immediately the favorite to win. Valerie Mayen, Layana Aguilar, Sam Donovan, and Dom may give him a run for his money -- and who know who else may surprise us -- but so far this seems like Kini's season to lose. Here's the cast list, via EW:
They added that guest judges will include Kesha, Boy George, Vanessa Hudgens, Debi Mazar, Little Big Town, Coca Rocha, Johnny Wujek, Kristin Cavallari, Debra Messing, Megan Hilty, and Brad Goreski, as well as "Project Runway" judges Nina Garcia and Zac Posen. Will you be watching this season? If so, who is your early favorite? Want more stuff like this? Michael Weatherly Quits 'NCIS' After 13 Seasons, Thanks Fans for 'Fantastic Ride' Posted: Thirteen seasons is a long time to do anything, but "NCIS" fans are still surprised and saddened to hear that Michael Weatherly is leaving his role as Special Agent Tony DiNozzo. TVLine said it was the actor's decision to leave the series, but the statement they shared came from CBS:
While the news spread online, the actor took to Twitter to share his own announcement -- with gratitude for all the support, but no real reason for the departure: Do you think he's just leaving to try something new? Whatever the reason, some fans now hope his character goes off to find Ziva. Is that what you want for Tony too? Want more stuff like this? Why the Olsen Twins (and Sister Elizabeth) Rejected 'Fuller House' Posted: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have "Full House" so far in the rear-view mirror that they can't even seem to speak for themselves when it comes to the revival series. "Fuller House" starts streaming on Netflix on February 26, and by now it's known that the former child stars are the only OGs not returning. People has a new cover story on the series, with the cast talking about the twins's absence and executive producer Bob Boyett relaying what each twin told him when rejecting the reunion:
They must've been pretty desperate to make that call. However the Olsens feel, many fans still have fond memories of the original series and are excited to see the revival. Will you miss Michelle? 9 Times Nicolas Cage Was the Most Cage He's Ever Been in Movies Posted: Whether he's swapping faces with John Travolta or stealing cars with Angelina Jolie, nothing can stop Nicolas Cage from being, well, Nicolas Cage. And we, and the internet, love him for that. Because no one gives better GIF than the Cage. From "Face/Off" to "Con Air," the Oscar-winner refuses to acknowledge the concept of "over the top." And there is nothing wrong with that. In honor of his birthday, here are nine times Full Cage was unleashed on the big screen. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Masculine' Site Brags 'Star Wars' Lost $4.2M After Their 'SJW Propaganda' Slam Posted: "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is quickly on its way to being the No. 1 movie of all time, but one site wants everyone to know they prevented the movie from rolling in even more dough. Return of Kings -- which describes itself as "a blog for heterosexual, masculine men" who believe "men should be masculine and women should be feminine" -- said their reporting on "The Force Awakens" as "a social justice propaganda" film led to a loss of ticket sales valued at $4.2 million. They based that figure on the 55 percent of voters who responded to their poll asking if online reporting of the social justice nature of the new Star Wars movie affected their decision to see the film. They added, "This figure does not include those men who haven't visited in the past month but know to stay clear away from Hollywood propaganda films thanks to our previous reporting." That "previous reporting" included their story, "Why You Should Not Go See 'Mad Max: Feminist Road," which dissed another one of the top movies of 2015. Their criticism of "The Force Awakens," detailed in the social justice piece, reads in part:
At least they are bonding over their outrage and patting themselves on the back for not joining the millions of others who have pushed "The Force Awakens" past every other movie on the planet. At least Jimmy Kimmel offered Return of Kings a new version of "Star Wars" to enjoy, which you can check out over in the late night roundup. Want more stuff like this? Posted: If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night. When Kristen Stewart hits the late night circuit, awkwardness always ensues, along with the occasional f-bomb. ("Take my bathroom to the friend? What the f--k?") But she's now on an awards season push for her supporting role in "Clouds of Sils Maria," so she returned to "The Tonight Show" to talk about how she's the first American actress to win France's Cesar Award -- and then she played The Whisper Challenge. It's kind of refreshing to see how she's always slightly nervous and thrown off, and she even admitted at one point that she was not having fun. At least she's not fake! Samuel L. Jackson didn't realize he was feuding with Donald Trump, or at least that's what he told Seth Meyers. They went through Sam's story of saying he's a better golfer than Donald, and Donald giving him a bill for a club he didn't join. Sam also challenged Donald Trump's assertion that he didn't know him. "I've met him a lot. I've played golf with him." They played golf with Anthony Anderson one time. "The Don" also called him -- always calling him "Samuel L." -- to play golf with his friend, and that friend turned out to be Bill Clinton. All the useful information! Since Seth is also feuding with Trump, he hopes this intel on Trump lying brings down the campaign. Guessing it won't have any effect at all. Driving videos always win, and this one is gold. James Corden has done well with Carpool Karaoke but Conan O'Brien upped the game with this hilarious ride with a super-sweet student driver. ("You're my b-tch!") The beginning is fun but the real party starts when they pick up Ice Cube and Kevin Hart for support. Can they do this every week? Jimmy Kimmel mentioned how the men's rights group Return of Kings boycotted "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" for making a woman and a non-white male lead characters (the horror!), so Kimmel altered the start of the movie for the men's group so they'll enjoy it more: Natalie Dormer was on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" to promote her new movie "The Forest," but she also discussed "Game of Thrones" Season 6 and the longterm plan for the series now that it's official that the next book won't be out anytime soon. She said she doesn't have any spoilers for characters like Jon Snow because she never reads the storylines of other characters, she only reads what happens to Margaery. She let slip that she only reads Margaery's story at Highgarden, then changed it to King's Landing, but that's probably a spoiler that Margaery goes to Highgarden. That might be why Natalie added filming in Spain instead of just Belfast. Killer Mike -- called so because every time he steps up to the mic he kills -- was on "Late Show" and while he spoke for black people, Stephen Colbert spoke for white people to try to find common ground. Mike suggested people Google the blue eyes/brown eyes experiment to get a background on prejudice. Mike supports Bernie Sanders for president and gave a good speech for him. It's awards season, with the Golden Globes airing this Sunday, so Sarah Hyland, Jack McBrayer, and Rami Malek practiced their red carpet poses on "The Late Late Show": Want more stuff like this?
