'The Walking Dead' May Get Another Companion Series Posted: It's no secret that the execs at AMC have no intention of letting "The Walking Dead" end anytime soon, offering up visions for the series to go on for ten seasons or more. So it makes sense, then, that they'd also want to explore additional spinoff -- sorry, "companion series" -- opportunities, too, after the success of last year's "Fear the Walking Dead." That's the word from AMC president Charlie Collier and programming head Joel Stillerman, who spoke with Vulture for a lengthy chat about the future of the network's programming slate, and its crown jewel, "TWD." Both men assured Vulture that there's no end in sight for "Dead" just yet ("[W]e're very sensitive to making sure that every aspect of it feels fresh and original, and that it's not treated in any way that's derivative or taken for granted," Collier told the site), and addressed the question of whether there could be more spinoffs like "Fear" ahead. The short answer? Yes. (But seriously, don't call them spinoffs -- the preferred terminology is "companion series," per Collier and Stillerman.) But not right away, and only if the story is right. "[W]e are open to ideas that feel organic to the creators in whom we've put our trust," Collier told Vulture. "So if Robert had a world he wanted to explore, you can bet that we are not just leaning into that conversation, but we're actively engaging in it. Right now we're not in that conversation, and there's nothing to report at all. I'm a huge believer in Robert and the executive producers of these shows. We wanted to create a place where they would bring us their creative dreams and bring us their passion projects. If Robert had another one, we would absolutely engage. This is a world that is rich enough to handle it. Right now we're just focused on these two." So while there is hope for more from the "Dead" world in the future, you'll have to make due with just "The Walking Dead" and "Fear the Walking Dead" for now. But based on how long both shows will probably be on the air, that shouldn't be too big of a loss. Here Are the First Photos From 'Fuller House' Posted: The wait is finally over for "Full House" fans clamoring for a closer look at upcoming revival series "Fuller House": Netflix released the first four photos from the show on Thursday. The images, the first glimpse of our characters in this new iteration of the classic ABC sitcom, center around D.J. Tanner-Fuller (Candace Cameron Bure), now a widowed mom of three who's moved back into her childhood home, where she's raising her sons alongside her sister Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) and BFF Kimmy (Andrea Barber). From the looks of things, "Fuller House" will maintain the goofy, gooey sentiment of the original series, based on all the hugging, wacky outfits, and family talks on display in these images. One photo features D.J. embracing Stephanie and Kimmy, while a bunch of other familiar faces look on: Danny (Bob Saget), Uncle Jesse (John Stamos), Aunt Becky (Lori Loughlin), and Joey (Dave Coulier). Other images introduce some of the new characters, including D.J.'s sons Jackson (Michael Champion), Max (Elias Harger), and baby Tommy Jr. (Messitt Twins), and Kimmy's daughter, Ramona (Soni Nicole Bringas). Check out the photos below. "Fuller House" debuts on Netflix on February 26. 'UnREAL' Season 2 Has a Black Man as the Bachelor, Unlike 'The Bachelor' Posted: "UnREAL" -- Lifetime's insightful dramedy about a dating show that is not openly "The Bachelor," but is totally "The Bachelor" -- will do in its second season what "The Bachelor" has not managed to do in 20 seasons: Cast a black man as the lead. Season 2 doesn't start until this summer, but it already sounds like it's going to hit every mark the ABC series carefully avoids. "UnREAL" co-creator and executive producer Sarah Gertrude Shapiro -- a real-life former "Bachelor" producer -- told Entertainment Weekly that Season 2 will take on race with the introduction of a black man as the "Everlasting" bachelor, and continue to explore gender issues as Shiri Appleby's Rachel and Constance Zimmer's Quinn continue their "female Breaking Bad."
In terms of the new "Everlasting" Bachelor, he's a 20-something pro football player named Darius Hill. "It's the elephant in the room... like the fact that those shows have never had an African-American lead," Shapiro told EW. During the Television Critics Association's press tour panel, Shapiro talked about being involved in "The Bachelor" discussions when they debated whether or not to cast an African-American bachelor. In addition to TV, she worked in advertising and fashion, and referenced those dark stories when previewing Season 2:
And you have to love this self-deprecating aside from executive producer Carol Barbee: "It's really fun to watch a bunch of white women school the world on race." Yeah, that might start some conversations on its own, but that's probably what they want. Overall, it sounds like it's going to be a very topical season, albeit maybe even less of a draw for men's rights activists than the real "Bachelor." Want more stuff like this? HBO Boss on Why There's More Female Nudity vs. Male: 'White Men Produce the Shows' Posted: Frankly, not everyone wants to see nudity on TV at all. But when networks like HBO do flash body parts, they tend to show more from women than men. Why is this? HBO President of Programming Michael Lombardo weighed in on the issue during an expansive Q&A with The Frame. After taking the blame for the disappointment of "True Detective" Season 2, the conversation turned to the popularity of "Game of Thrones." That turned to the subject of nudity, and why there are more naked women on TV than naked men. (For example, "Game of Thrones" has shown us a lot of the ladies at Littlefinger's brothel, but when it comes to male nudity, they gave us ... Hodor. Plus, both Cersei and the High Septon had naked walks of shame, but the High Septon covered his private parts and we saw all of Cersei.) Here's that portion of Lombardo's Q&A with The Frame:
It's an interesting perspective. Not sure a female showrunner would automatically go for more male nudity, though. Nudity only rarely has anything to do with the actual story, and mental/emotional connections are usually more of a turn-on than TV-simulated sex. Not that there is no male nudity on TV. Christopher Eccleston went full frontal for this past season of HBO's "The Leftovers" -- it was brief and for a scene where he was doing more of his Job punishments, so it made sense in the moment and was not sexualized. But still. The Doctor got his lad out and no one batted an eye. "The Affair" and "Outlander" don't air on HBO but they too recently braved the world of male nudity. There's been more male nudity than ever, but the instances only stand out because they are rare compared to female exposure. The gender issue is interesting to bring up, though, since there are more male showrunners and directors on TV -- especially in cable -- and the majority of shows lead from a heterosexual male POV. Why white, though? Yes, there are more white male showrunners than anything, but would the resulting nudity be different with a man of color in charge? Just something to chew on. Paging Dr. 'Chance': Hugh Laurie Takes the Lead of New Hulu Series Posted: They had us at Hugh Laurie Does Anything, but we may need mouth-to-mouth after learning the "House" alum will lead "Chance," Hulu's new psychological thriller series. According to Deadline, Laurie will play San Francisco-based forensic neuropsychiatrist Dr. Eldon Chance, who gets drawn into a world of mistaken identity, police corruption, and mental illness. "Chance" is based on the novel by Kem Nunn, with Alexandra Cunningham ("Desperate Housewives," "Aquarius") as showrunner, and "Room" director Lenny Abrahamson as an executive producer and director of several episodes. "Chance" already has a two-season 20 episode order for a late 2016 premiere, which is a strong early show of support. So if you were on the fence about subscribing to Hulu, consider the return of Dr. Laurie to a lead series role. (Question: Is there ANY way we can drag Robert Sean Leonard into this thing, so it's a full House & Wilson reunion?) Deadline said Hugh Laurie had been the No. 1 choice from the start: "In the years since House ended its run on Fox, the Golden Globe-winning actor had been heavily pursued to headline a new series but had turned down every offer. With Chance, he is all in, and already is actively working with the other executive producers." Fox 21 TV Studios president Bert Salke added, "Hugh has very strong feelings, and he will be involved in every aspect of production." We like strong feelings. This may mean that Hugh Laurie is not long for "Veep," but that was probably safe to assume anyway. Are you excited to see how this turns out? Want more stuff like this? Did 'American Idol' Just Introduce the Final Season Winner in Sonika Vaid? Posted: "American Idol" Season 15, aka "The Farewell Season," premiered last night and may have already shown us the once-top-rated show's final winner. There was a lot of looking back as they introduced potential new stars, and the show acknowledged that some past "Idol" losers have done better than the actual winners. There were several great singers on the Season 15 premiere, but one in particular stood out: Sonika Vaid. The 20-year-old singer from Martha's Vineyard, MA, auditioned in Denver and it was immediately clear that she would go far. Sonika sang "Idol" champ Carrie Underwood's "Look at Me," and just listening to her voice you could imagine it on the radio. You could see her voicing a Disney princess in an animated classic. And that's without even noticing that she looks like a Disney princess herself. In Sonika's backstory, we learned that her parents came to the U.S. from India, starting with nothing when they were just children. She has that American dream story going for her, a perfect TV look, poise and charm, a memorable name, and that voice. Judge Harry Connick Jr. even said she was the only one up to that point who stood out to him as a potential winner. Do you agree -- may we already have our winner? Whether she becomes the final "American Idol" winner or not, Sonika seems poised for some kind of stardom, especially if this last gasp "Farewell Season" gets more attention than the past few largely ignored years. What do you think? Could Sonika win? Will you watch to find out, or are you as bored with "Idol" as that bitter non-winner Clay Aiken? Want more stuff like this? 'Star Wars': Every Box Office Record 'The Force Awakens' Has Broken Posted: It's official: "Star Wars" is bigger than "Avatar." On Wednesday, "The Force Awakens" became the highest grossing film of all-time at the domestic box office, crushing the $760.5M gross of James Cameron's hit in a record 20 days of release. And to add even more coin to its Scrooge McDuck vault, "Star Wars" also hit the $800M mark at the international box office. Over the holiday break, fans watched as J.J. Abrams' very entertaining blockbuster broke box office records left and right. To impress your friends, here's a handy list of all the times the movie has made history so far: -- Fastest film to reach $100M (21 hours), $200M (3 days), $300M (5 days), $400M (8 days), $500M (10 days), $600M (12 days), and $700M (16 days) -- Biggest opening weekend ever and biggest December opening ($247.9M) -- Biggest opening week ever ($390.85M) -- Biggest Thursday preview ever ($57M) -- Biggest opening day, single day and Friday ever ($119.1M) -- Biggest IMAX debut ($30.1M) -- Biggest second weekend of all time ($149.2M), propelling the industry to the biggest overall Christmas weekend of all time ($296.4M for all films, Dec. 25-27) -- Biggest third weekend of all-time ($90.2M) -- Biggest Sunday ($60.6M), Monday ($40.1M), and Tuesday ($37.3M) in box office history -- Biggest Christmas Day ($49.3M) and New Year's Day ($34.39M) ever. But wait -- there's more. "Star Wars" also posted the biggest global launch in the history of ever, with an insane $528.9M. It also cleared a billion dollars in a record 12 days. So how high will "Star Wars" go? It's hard to say, because literally no movie has ever done this type of business before. But the film shows no signs of slowing down, especially with a lack of serious competition in January -- a month that is traditionally ho-hum in terms of box office. Some pundits say that the film could reach $1B domestic. *brainsplode "Episode VIII" hits theaters May 2017, and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" arrives December 16, 2016 -- almost a year after "The Force Awakens." %Slideshow-348022% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Emma Stone May Play Cruella De Vil in Disney Live-Action Origin Story Posted: Dahhhling, would you even believe Emma Stone as someone cruel enough to steal puppies for fur coats? According to The Hollywood Reporter, Emma Stone is in early negotiations to play the "101 Dalmations" villainess in a live-action origin story called "Cruella." They say Kelly Marcel is now writing the script (back in 2013, "Cinderella" writer Aline Brosh McKenna was the one working on "Cruella"). And even though there is no director at this point, THR said the project is a priority for Disney which hopes to shoot the film later this year. Yes, Hollywood has completely run out of original ideas. Let's just get that out of the way. Now, what do you think of Emma Stone as the latest potential Cruella? The animated Cruella, from the 1961 movie, is the most iconic, but Glenn Close donned the hair and coat in the 1996 live action adaptation, and Victoria Smurfit was just Cruella for an arc on ABC's "Once Upon a Time." The "Once" version of Cruella had her own interesting backstory, and it's possible this origin story will give her a sympathetic start, trying to find the heart behind the horror -- like Angelina Jolie in "Maleficent" or something. Just a guess. What do you think of this "Cruella" origin story idea, and Emma Stone in the lead role -- into it or hard pass? Want more stuff like this? People's Choice Awards 2016 Winners: Watch Vin Diesel Sing for Paul Walker Posted: Why does it never fail to water our eyes when Vin Diesel honors Paul Walker? He did it again last night at the People's Choice Awards, when giving a lengthy acceptance speech for "Furious 7," which won two awards. Vin name dropped the late actor, whom he has called his brother, and at the end of the speech he sang a verse from the film's end song, "See You Again." Here's his full speech: The PCAs are sort of the start of awards season, but things don't really kick off until this Sunday's Golden Globes. There was a stage-crasher promoting a new album (that's him below), and Dakota Johnson talked about her boobs, but otherwise the 2016 PCAs just stuck with the tradition of honoring celebs who already knew they would win, which is not as much fun as drunk celebs being shocked into saying something crazy. Anyway, here are the winners and the nominees they beat for the trophies (via Entertainment Weekly):

Posted: If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night. Billy Joel was on "The Tonight Show" and, of course, The Piano Man sat at the piano to sing us a song. Jimmy Fallon jumped right in and they sang the Rolling Stones's "Beast of Burden" together. Fallon's Mick Jagger impression is still on point. Of course, Jimmy wouldn't be Jimmy if he didn't ham it up, and he went Full Jagger and got the audience to join in. However, topping that is this impromptu performance of "The Longest Time" from Billy, Jimmy, Billy's band, and actor J.K. Simmons -- this was just during a commercial break as they shot some local promos: Speaking of J.K. Simmons, the multi-talented "Whiplash" actor admitted that he accidentally head-butted Lupita Nyong'o when accepting his Oscar last year. He suggested Fallon go back and watch what happened in slow motion. This is just a good nightmare at the Golden Globes story, whether you know who Amy Landecker is or not. She's a star of "Transparent" but she was also in "House of Lies" and had a sex scene on that show with Don Cheadle. That's the focus of her story on "Conan," sharing what happened at last year's Golden Globes. First, Amy talked about how she misunderstood how they were going to shoot that "House of Lies" sex scene, and they ended up shooting it three times, from behind, and she told her agent she never wanted to do another sex scene again, it was just too much. Fast-forward to the Golden Globes, her first time at the event, and she was all amped up and tried a little to hard to be cutesy and funny on the red carpet. So when she saw Don Cheadle talking to Jeffrey Tambor, she approached him and said, "Hey, Don, you remember me? You f--ked me up the ass three times." Eek. The punchline: Don turned to her and said, "My kids are standing right behind me." She turned, and not only were his kids there, his wife was there glaring at Amy with her arms crossed. So Amy started to cry right there on the red carpet. Jimmy Kimmel, always the smart a--, had his team go out onto the street and ask strangers to congratulate North Korea on their hydrogen bomb. The running theory was, if a question is asked cheerfully enough, Americans will respond to anything in a positive way. This has to be fake, or just editing misdirection and these poor people were being sarcastic or responding to something else. Anyone else miss "Parks and Recreation"? Retta told Seth Meyers she hears "Treat Yo Self" 10 times a day, which actually sounds like a low estimate. She also shared her own TV recommendations, listing the shows we should all be watching. Agree with a lot of her choices. Seth said "The Affair" is an "interesting" show to watch with his wife, since it leads to a lot of tense moments. "Mr. Robot" star Christian Slater talked about revisiting "True Romance" for a live reading with Patricia Arquette -- and she showed up in full Alabama costume. That movie is so COOL. Besides, Floyd smoked the second page of the letter. #OldSchoolPitt James Corden is always game for a good time, so he had audience members play a game called "Fake or Flop," checking to see if they could tell the difference between fake past movies and real ones. It's hard to believe some of those movies really happened. The best part is just seeing James interact with the audience. He flips off a guy who thinks he looks like Kurt Russell and shames a fat Matt Damon. Jerry Seinfeld was on "The Late Show" and got a standing ovation and a chant of "Jerry" before doing some standup for about five minutes. Whenever Kathy Griffin is on the late night circuit, she disses Ryan Seacrest and she did it again, sharing more stories about their fake feud. The best part is how HARD Kimmel laughs everything. She also dinged Kimmel and shared Anderson Cooper stories, and revealed what happened about two weeks ago when she insulted "looney tunes" Sean Penn's hair to his face. Want more stuff like this?
