The Last Sci-Fi Blog: A Brief History of Science Fiction at the Oscars Posted: 14 Jan 2016 09:00 PM PST When the 2016 Academy Award nominees were announced, genre fans were in a thrill: Mad Max: Fury Road walked away from the fray with 10 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, and The Martian landed seven of its own, including Best Picture and Best Actor. It stung that the tremendous Ex Machina was shuffled into a technical categories and a screenplay award, but we have to take what we can get. Oscar voters rarely care for science fiction and fantasy tomfoolery. Don't get your hopes up, guys. While these movies may very well snag a bunch of technical wins (and George Miller has a real shot at that Best Director trophy), history has proven that sci-fi movies tend to falter in the Best Picture race. If they're nominated at all. Let's go on a brief tour of... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Meet Kevin Hart's Hyper Bunny in a New Trailer for 'The Secret Life of Pets' Posted: 14 Jan 2016 07:30 PM PST Just in time to coincide with the release of Ride Along 2, a new trailer for The Secret Life of Pets focuses on a character voiced by Kevin Hart. In the upcoming animated feature, the comedian speaks the part of a white rabbit named Snowball. And as seems to be a growing trend in family film humor (see the Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise), he accidentally poops when he's excited. The Secret Life of Pets is from the studio that made the Despicable Me movies, which you'll be reminded of both in the appearance of Minions gallivanting around their logo and in the mention in the trailer that it's "from the humans" who gave us that hit franchise. As with Despicable Me, this movie seems to have fun blurring the lines of... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
First 'Green Room' Trailer Turns Patrick Stewart Into a Neo-Nazi Posted: 14 Jan 2016 06:30 PM PST Last September, after Green Room had its United States premiere at Fantastic Fest, Jacob Hall wrote a great post about how the movie shows us a side of Patrick Stewart we've never really seen before: that of the unrelenting, unapologetic and yet disarmingly charming psychopath. Stewart isn't actually the main star of the movie, though. Those duties are somewhat split amongst the ensemble's younger cast, with Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots and Alia Shawkat kind of anchoring things. But if you cast Professor-X as the leader of a gang of Neo-Nazi skinheads, it's going to be a big talking point and so it makes sense that the first teaser trailer for the movie plays up his presence big time. It's an excellent teaser, really, luring us into the movie's world... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'13 Hours' Might Be Michael Bay's Angriest Movie Posted: 14 Jan 2016 04:30 PM PST There's a moment in 13 Hours where someone carelessly drops the body of a fallen soldier off a rooftop to make his job a little easier, and when John Krasinski's Jack sees this, he grabs the person responsible and lets out the angriest kind of yell, full of rage, contempt, heartbreak and a lot of beard. Jack isn't just angry at the guy for being so careless with one of his "brothers" -- he's angry that he's there, that this happened, that his friends are dead and that all of it probably could've been prevented. At least the movie would like you to think it all could've been prevented. "That whole Benghazi thing" is what I'm talking about, and aside from the knowledge that a U.S. ambassador was killed and Hilary Clinton had to... Update: George Miller Says He WILL Make More 'Mad Max' Movies Posted: 14 Jan 2016 02:15 PM PST UPDATE: Thankfully George Miller has now corrected the record, saying that the below quotes were totally misinterpreted on a loud, busy red carpet. Here's what he told The Wrap. “She completely got the wrong fragments of information that were just not true. I said no, [another Mad Max movie] will not be next, and she took that to mean I never wanted to make another Mad Max. It won’t necessarily be next, but I have two more stories.” So rest assured, apocalypse fans. Miller still wants to make more Mad Max movies. Previously: Since the release of Mad Max: Fury Road last may, we've been hearing about more potential sequels. Writer-director George Miller has mentioned multiple scripts and in October said he was in discussion with Warner Bros... Superhero Movie Buzz: 'Deadpool' Billboard and Rating, 'Batman v Superman' Villain Rumors Posted: 14 Jan 2016 02:00 PM PST Actor and comedian Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille) noted an unusual billboard in the Los Angeles area recently and shared it on social media (via ScreenCrush; see above) with the following comment: "This idiotic/brilliant billboard is why I'm all in on the Deadpool movie." That prompted the official Twitter account for Deadpool to respond with another emoji: As it happens, the movie has also received its official rating: "R." The Classification and Rating Administration gave the following reasons: "Rated R for strong violence and language throughout, sexual content and graphic nudity." Of course, that's no surprise, since marketing materials have been touting the planned rating since last year, but fans of the comic book character have every... He said he's "extremely excited about the direction we’re going in, and we’re really pushing to make sure the audience feels like it’s not more of the same." He also noted: "You amp up everything, you work on the performances, you work on the story, you work on the action; it’s just not one thing." 'Die Hard' and 'Harry Potter' Star Alan Rickman Dies at 69 Posted: 14 Jan 2016 10:42 AM PST One of cinema's most iconic stars of the past 30 years has died. Alan Rickman, who broke out with his first big screen role as the villain Hans Gruber in Die Hard, passed away this morning at age 69. He'd reportedly been suffering from cancer. The London-born Rickman got his start in the theater, was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and received a Tony Award nomination for his Broadway debut in Les Liaisons Dangereuses in 1987. From there, he went to Hollywood and played one of the most popular action movie bad guys of all time opposite Bruce Willis. After making a huge mark in Die Hard, he went on to play more villains in the movies. He played the Sheriff of Nottingham in 1991's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and another...
