The 'Freaks and Geeks' Cast Will Reunite at the TV Land Awards

Posted:

"Freaks and Geeks" fans, rejoice: The cast is slated to reunite at the upcoming TV Land Awards.

The beloved one-season wonder will receive the 15th Anniversary Award at the ceremony, with TV Land announcing in a press release that despite its short run from 1999-2000, the show "continues to find new fans every year." One of the reasons for that, no doubt, is the stellar ensemble that creator Paul Feig and co. assembled (casting director Allison Jones snagged the series's sole Emmy for her work), and TV Land revealed that almost every single main actor from the series will be present at the awards show.

Scheduled to appear are Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Linda Cardellini, Busy Philipps, Samm Levine, Martin Starr, David Gruber Allen, and Steve Bannos. Feig and producer Judd Apatow are also confirmed.

In addition to that star-studded lineup, the awards will also feature a performance by Jennifer Hudson, who's singing a song from hit show "Empire." Other series and stars slated for honors at the ceremony include "Parenthood" (Fan Favorite Award), "The Wonder Years" (Impact Award), "Ally McBeal" (Groundbreaking Award), Betty White (Legend Award), Donny and Marie Osmond (Pop Culture Award), and a tribute to the late Joan Rivers.

The 2015 TV Land Awards, hosted by Terry Crews, tape this weekend. The show will air on TV Land, Nickelodeon, and NickMom on April 18 at 9 p.m.

'Furious 7' Zooms Past $500 Million at Global Box Office

Posted:

"Furious 7" just keeps picking up momentum, racing to a jaw-dropping $526.8 million global box office total since its April 3 debut.

The latest installment in the wildly popular "Fast and Furious" franchise landed in the number one spot in every territory in which it debuted last week, topping the box office charts in the U.S. ($147.2 million), Mexico ($21.5 million), and the U.K. ($18.7 million), among many others. It's now the third-biggest international opener of all time, behind only "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2" ($314 million) and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" ($260.4 million).

And according to industry insiders, "Furious 7" is on track to add even more cash to that impressive haul. It's currently figured to make about $60 million domestically this weekend; add that to its current $183.7 domestic total and $343.1 million global total, and it seems there's no stopping this flick.

"Furious 7" is the last film featuring the late Paul Walker, and includes a tribute to the star.

Marvel Releases Vision Poster for 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' (PHOTO)

Vision, Avengers: Age of Ultron
The release of "Avengers: Age of Ultron" is less than a month away, and Marvel is celebrating by giving fans a peek at one of the sequel's new characters: Vision.

A new poster featuring the mysterious character (played by Paul Bettany, who's voiced J.A.R.V.I.S. in four Marvel flicks so far) finally reveals a close-up look at the new addition. He almost looks like a less-armored, purple version of Iron Man (which makes sense, given he's the creation of Tony Stark), though the menacing glare he's sporting is a bit concerning.

His look is completed by a cape, gloves, and what appears to be a stone of some sort embedded in his forehead. All in all, the image gives us more questions than answers, though it's enough to sate our appetites for now.

More about Vision is set to be revealed when "Avengers: Age of Ultron" hits theaters on May 1. Until then, check out the full poster below.

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin Are Blindsided in the 'Grace and Frankie' Trailer

Posted:

Grace and Frankie
Netflix has released a trailer for its new original series, "Grace and Frankie," starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as the titular women whose lives are turned upside down by a shocking revelation.

The women are blindsided when their husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) tell them that they are gay, and are leaving their wives for each other. They want to get married, Sheen's character explains, "'Cause we can do that now."

"I know, I hosted that fundraiser," a frustrated Frankie replies.

Plenty of hijinks ensue, including Sheen and Waterston trying to explain their relationship -- they're both partners at a law firm, and life partners -- to confused friends and relatives. One of Grace's daughters (Brooklyn Decker) assures her that they'll find someone for her to talk to about her feelings, while the other (June Diane Raphael) wonders if a support group "for wives of husbands who turned gay in their 70s" even exists.

Some of the humor seems a little broad, though we trust that the series is in good hands with these capable comediennes at the helm. "Grace and Frankie" also stars Ethan Embry and Baron Vaughn. It hits Netflix on May 8.

David Ayer Shares First Snap of 'Suicide Squad' Cast (PHOTO)

Posted:

suicide squad
The "Suicide Squad" is officially assembled, and director David Ayer has shared the first photo of the entire cast (minus Jared Leto) together.

The picture, taken at a table read, is notable for a number of reasons, including the surprise revelation of some new members of the ensemble. Among the fresh faces are Ike Barinholtz ("The Mindy Project," "Neighbors," the upcoming Tina Fey-Amy Poehler flick "Sisters") and Adam Beach ("Flags of Our Fathers").

There's also one glaring omission: Joker Leto, whose newly-shaved visage is MIA. (We assume he was probably off somewhere having his hair dyed green.)

Still, this pseudo class photo is pretty awesome, and it's cool to see so many stars packed into one picture. They include the previously-confirmed Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Joel Kinnaman, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Karen Fukuhara.

"Suicide Squad" is due in theaters on August 5, 2016.

'True Detective' Season 2 Has a Trailer and a Release Date (VIDEO)

Posted:

True Detective season 2
HBO dropped the first trailer for the second season of "True Detective" on Thursday, and also revealed when new episodes of the critically-acclaimed series are set to debut.

The wordless teaser features our first glimpses of Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, and Kelly Reilly in character, and from the looks of it, everyone is absolutely miserable. Several characters burst into tears throughout the short clip, Farrell -- who sports a pretty spectacular mustache -- puts on some brass knuckles, and Kitsch appears to be suffering some sort of mental breakdown.

That seems about right for the dark series, which this season features a corrupt police department (led by Farrell, McAdams, and Kitsch) teaming up with a floundering mob boss (Vaughn) to solve a murder. Based on this first clip, that task won't be easy on anyone -- least of all on the involved parties' psyches.

"True Detective" season two is slated to premiere on June 21 on HBO.

Watch the First 'Orange Is the New Black' Season 3 Trailer

Posted:

Orange is the new black
The first trailer for the third season of "Orange Is the New Black" is finally here, and just like the series's new tagline, we're #sorrynotsorry to say that we absolutely love it.

In the clip, we see Big Boo get a makeover, Red dish out some harsh truths, Crazy Eyes explain that her version of love includes a six-person orgy (with an alien), and Alex -- dubbed "the Bettie Page of Litchfield" -- make her not-so-triumphant return to the prison. As one inmate explains, "It's a whole new world around here," and that includes new arrivals, too.

Among them are Lori Petty (who made a memorable cameo in the season two premiere) and the much-hyped addition of Ruby Rose, who catches Piper's eye. As for our protagonist, she's as self-centered as ever, though seems to be understanding the importance of her time inside Litchfield.

"Maybe this is exactly where I'm supposed to be," Piper says.

And we know exactly where we're supposed to be: parked on our couch, bingeing on this new batch of episodes as soon as they're released on June 12. That blessed day can't come soon enough.

Why Oscar Isaac Channeled Stanley Kubrick for 'Ex Machina' (EXCLUSIVE)

Posted:

Oscar Isaac at the There are good science fiction movies, and there are science fiction movies that realign your perception of the world, while thrusting you into some new or otherworldly space, full of unfamiliar technology or biology. Alex Garland is in the business of making the latter. The British novelist breathed life into the zombie movie with his script for Danny Boyle's "28 Days Later," and took audiences to the far flung reaches of space with their second collaboration, "Sunshine" (if you haven't seen it, please correct the error of your ways -- it's fabulous). Garland also adapted a beloved novel for the cloning saga "Never Let Me Go" and an equally beloved cult comic book for "Dredd" (again: outstanding, especially in 3D).

This week, Garland makes his directorial debut with "Ex Machina," a twisty-turny little science fiction film that stars Domhnall Gleeson as Caleb, a coder for a Google-like monolith called Bluebook. Bluebook is run by a reclusive, genius billionaire named Nathan (Oscar Isaac), who summons Caleb to his airtight compound to engage in a series of interactions with his brand-new invention: an eerily lifelike robot named Ava (Alicia Vikander). Things, as you can imagine, don't go smoothly.

At the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, a few weeks ago, we got to sit on a sunny porch and chat with Isaac. The movie had debuted at the festival the night earlier with a rapturous response and predictably awesome after-party, and you could tell Isaac was feeling good. (Or maybe it was the fact that he stars in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and knows tons of stuff that nobody else knows, well, besides Gleeson, who also stars in that little film. Read more about that here.)

During our conversation, we talked about the look and development of the character, why he found famed director Stanley Kubrick to be such an influence, how he nearly landed the lead in "The Bourne Legacy," and, oh yeah, his exceptional dance moves.

Moviefone: I wanted to first ask about the development of the character, because he's not at all what you expect. How much of that was on the page and how much did you come up with?

Oscar Isaac: Most of it was on the page. Almost all of it was on the page. A lot of the concepts and exactly how the whole thing fits together is so thought out, and Alex was so rigorous with making sure it all lines up; it was really on the page. We did spend a good many days getting together and going through the script line-by-line, just to make sure it made sense to me and made sense as a whole. But that kind of wit and intelligence and ferocity was on the page.

What about the look of the character? He's working out all the time but not totally in shape because he's drinking, and he's got a shaved head but a bushy beard...

The drinking and the working out was in there because he's supposed to be incredibly formidable on every level. He's a foil to Caleb -- he's stronger than he is, he's more intelligent, he's funnier, he's quicker. He's like an impossible foe. So when the tables do finally turn, it's really rewarding. But the look was something that we played around with a lot.

What he looked like wasn't specified at all, so we thought, Well, he's not seen anyone. He's been in his research facility for however many years, with no contact with human beings. What would he look like? So the first look that I came up with and brought to Alex was a long beard and long hair, quite caveman-looking, I thought, What reason would he have to cut his hair? He's got a lot of things on his mind. And then we did some tests with that and we liked it; we were fairly close to going with that one. But then I said, "The other option is this..." And I actually shaved my head and thought, This is a bit severe and that would be more like I can't deal with hair.

It'd be getting in the way so you'd have to shave it but the beard really isn't getting in the way and he wouldn't want to have to shave every day. It was very practical. And also, to me, it gave a little bit of that Kubrick look, although he had the long hair in his later years. He had the bald head and the glasses and those big owl eyes.

The movie is very economic in its storytelling. Did you and Alex talk about the character's history?

Yes, we talked about those ideas -- like it says in the script, he wrote the code for Bluebook at 13. He was a savant. For me, the idea that he came from, again with the Kubrick inspiration, I listened to some of his speech patterns, particularly when he was younger. So there's a bit of a Bronx accent and I imagined him being from the Bronx. I followed him through; he was self-taught, the way that Steve Jobs was. And where this misanthropic, dystopian feeling started to set in.

Where did this Kubrick thing come from?

For me, I just liked the idea of someone who was mysterious and powerful and incredibly smart and who I think is a genius. That's where I started -- who do I think is a genius? Not necessarily who other people think is a genius but not that other people think is a genius. Obviously, there is the bro billionaire people, but that's someone who has a fascinating mind. So I thought of him and I thought of Bobby Fischer and read about him and watched documentaries on him because he's someone who is so brilliant at one thing but is so dark and had such messed up ideas and was definitely diseased by certain things.

Were you ever worried that the movie wouldn't work?

Never. I read it and thought, This is amazing. It was just like when I read "Sunshine" and I thought it was some of the best sci-fi I'd ever read. I think Alex is one of the greats.

I've heard the "Sunshine" script was even weirder than the movie.

It was amazing. It was the first script I ever read outside of school and it was my first audition, for the Cillian Murphy part (Robert Capa). It sounds sort of like Caleb.

And weren't you very close to nabbing Jeremy Renner's part in "The Bourne Legacy"?

Oh yeah. Tony and I had talked about it, and we did a very long, long screen test. And Tony is very up front about it too -- Universal didn't want to go with an unknown. So then he asked Jeremy, after he was cast, if he was cool about bringing me on. Because everybody knew the story. And he was so cool and said, "Oh yeah, bring him."

What was filming with the robot like? Was she in some kind of suit? Had you seen designs beforehand?

I had been shown designs, so I had some idea of what she would look like. But the grey mesh? That was her whole suit. And they just put it in later. I had an idea what she looked like, not exactly, but a basic understanding.

Can we talk about your dance number?

Sure.

You obviously had to spend some time choreographing that.

Yeah, we spent a few days with a choreographer choreographing that. It's actually twice as long. We did almost the entire song. But, wisely, they used the perfect amount. It was such a disco non sequiter. It's one of the last things you would have expected from this movie.

Was it ever in danger of being cut?

No, never. From the moment we started shooting, we thought, This is amazing. People are going to be like, What the f*ck is this?

The First 'Jurassic World' Clip Features... Charming Banter? (VIDEO)

Posted:

The MTV Movie Awards will soon be upon us (Sunday night, although anything not related to Westeros that night is just not on our radar), and to celebrate, the cable giant has treated the world to an exclusive first clip from this summer's high anticipated adventure "Jurassic World." As Samuel L. Jackson said in the original film: Hold onto your butts.

Actually, no, your butts should be just fine, since this clip doesn't feature any of the rampaging dinosaur action we've come to expect from the series, but instead focuses on the charming, romantic comedy-style banter between Chris Pratt, playing a dinosaur trainer of some kind, and Bryce Dallas Howard, who is the operational manager of the now fully functional and open-to-the-public park. She is trying to convince him to come back and assess the new, genetically reconstituted mega-dinosaur that her crackpot scientists have created; he is reluctant to do so. Also, there's some fairly obvious product placement for a little Mercedes SUV that is parked in the background, framed in glorious sunlight.

It's a cute little scene and while the absence of dinosaurs is tragic, the back-and-forth between the stars is lovely and you get a little taste of Michael Giacchino's tropically-tinged score. Also, this sequence clearly sets up that part in the trailer where Pratt rides his motorcycle with the domesticated raptors that made us yelp for joy (it was more of a yodel).

"Jurassic World" is open for business on June 12th. Expect more big time summer movie exclusives ahead of (and during) the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday.

"Gossip Girl" may have said its final "XOXO" in 2012, but that doesn't mean we've gotten over it. Ryan Gosling Gets a Text Mid-Interview and Is Super Embarrassed (VIDEO)

Posted:

The undeniably handsome Ryan Gosling has been hitting the promotional circuit pretty hard, since his debut feature as a director, "Lost River," which got a puzzling reaction at Cannes last spring, is finally coming out tomorrow in theaters and on VOD. As part of this tour, he stopped by for an interview with Britain's Telegraph. And things were going perfectly well until... he got a text.

If you weren't already moon-eyed in love with Gosling before, just prepare yourself. The actor becomes very awkward and embarrassed and it's the most charming thing imaginable, especially for a movie star of his stature (you really can't imagine George Clooney becoming this squirmy). Anyway, watch it already, it's a delight.

Best of Late Night TV: Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Whisper Challenge and James Van Der Beek's First Kiss (VIDEO)

Posted:

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

Let's kick things off with a classic "Tonight Show" game, shall we? Julia Louis-Dreyfus visited Jimmy Fallon to play "The Whisper Challenge," a completely hilarious game in which they had to listen to headphones and guess what each other was whispering. "Sausage penis" kind of sounds like "salted peanuts," right?

Pharrell Williams visited "Late Night" and chatted with Seth Meyers about playing it nice on "The Voice." He also explained what it's like to hear a contestant perform one of his own songs -- which he compared to the horrors of listening to yourself on a voice mail.

Remember when Kristen Stewart played a bro in that totally awesome Jenny Lewis video? Well turns out she might have been channeling the one and only Justin Bieber. Watch her tell Conan about her inspiration below!

Finally, James Van Der Beek and Josh Gad visited "The Late Late Show" and traded stories about their first kiss. Wait. Does this mean that James' first wasn't Katie Holmes on "Dawson's Creek?" Our lives will never be the same.
