Mitch Pileggi Will Be Back for Fox's 'X-Files' Revival Posted: Mulder and Scully aren't the only familiar faces returning for Fox's upcoming "X-Files" revival: Walter Skinner is set to make a triumphant comeback, too. The actor behind the FBI director, Mitch Pileggi, took to Twitter to announce the news himself, writing that Skinner would "once again be getting all grumpy and bitchy with his two wayward kids." Pileggi added that he was "Very happy" to be involved in the new episodes, which also feature original leads David Duchony and Gillian Anderson, a.k.a. those wayward kids. "X-Files" fans rejoiced when Fox announced late last month that the series would be making a comeback, more than a dozen years after leaving the airwaves. The original series ran for nine season from 1993 to 2002. Production on the six new episodes is set to begin this summer. No airdate has been announced yet. 'The LEGO Movie Sequel' and 'LEGO Batman' Get New Release Dates Posted: Three upcoming "LEGO Movie" flicks have new release dates, with "The LEGO Movie Sequel" and the LEGO Batman spinoff arriving earlier than anticipated. "The LEGO Movie Sequel" has been moved up one week, and will now open on May 18, 2018. A spinoff film centered on LEGO Batman -- still untitled -- also has an earlier release date, and will now hit theaters on February 10, 2017. That's bad news, unfortunately, for a second "LEGO" spinoff, "Ninjago," which reportedly needs additional work. That project has been pushed from a previous fall 2016 release date to a new debut set for September 22, 2017. Warner Bros. exec Veronika Kwan Vandenberg touted the three flicks as "incredibly imaginative movies" that "each [offer] something different to appeal to a broad range of audiences around the world." "We are very excited about dating our upcoming LEGO animated features, which already have a worldwide fan following, built on the foundation of the first film," added Dan Fellman, another Warner Bros. exec. "These three films already in the pipeline are just the beginning of a creative and diverse animation slate that will be delighting audiences for years to come." Dominic Sherwood Cast as Jace in ABC Family's 'Shadowhunters' Posted: ABC Family has found its male lead for its upcoming series based on the "Mortal Instruments" books. Variety reports that Dominic Sherwood ("Vampire Academy," Taylor Swift's "Style" video) has joined the "Shadowhunters" cast as Jace, a member of the the titular group of human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. He helps 18-year-old Clary Fray search for her mother who's gone missing, and helps Clary come to terms with her new identity as a Shadowhunter. "Shadowhunters" seems to be a hard reboot of the "Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" movie, which starred Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower as Clary and Jace, respectively. That 2013 flick didn't score so well at the box office, prompting production company Constantin Film to reimagine Cassandra Clare's book series for a television format; it looks like "Shadowhunters" will act as if that flick never happened, and tell the "Mortal Instruments" story from the beginning. ABC Family has ordered a 13-episode first season of the show, and the series premiere is set to be directed by McG. It's still looking to cast its leading lady. This Retro Recut of the 'Batman v Superman' Trailer Is Campy Fun Posted: Like most big trailers before it, the new "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" teaser has gotten a retro makeover, trading in special effects for practical ones and shiny new suits for the campy-looking classics. The clip, courtesy of YouTuber Bobby Burns, features images of iconic actors Christopher Reeve and Adam West playing their own versions of Superman and Batman from their movies and TV show, respectively. We see Reeve flying around the globe gloomily as whispers from the original trailer wonder if this alien is really a savior, or the devil in disguise. While Batfleck then enters the picture in the actual trailer, we meet West's version instead, running around with Robin and sliding down a firepole before he growls out to the Man of Steel, "Do you bleed? You will." It's a bit jarring to see the sometimes silly, more simplistic iterations of the characters (and their less-impressive special effects) superimposed over the "Batman v Superman" trailer's dark, ominous dialogue and score, though it's worth it for the re-worked logo, which features the old emblems of the superheroes from Reeve and West's heydays. Check it out below. [via: YouTube] Photo credit: YouTube This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Furious 7' Reaches $1 Billion Faster Than Any Movie Ever Posted: As "Furious 7" continues its box office dominance, it has a new milestone to celebrate: It's now crossed the astounding $1 billion threshold at the global box office -- and it's the fastest that any movie has ever claimed that feat. According to Variety, "Furious 7" zoomed to that jaw-dropping total in just 17 days (it officially hit the mark on Friday), beating previous champs "The Avengers," "Avatar," and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2," which all took 19 days to accomplish that task. Box Office Mojo projects that "Furious 7" is currently sitting on a heap of $1.15 billion in international grosses, $294 million of that coming from domestic theaters. As our own expert has predicted, "Furious 7" should have no trouble slaying the box office competition for the foreseeable future, until "Avengers: Age of Ultron" hits on May 1. That flick may yet beat "Furious 7"'s 17-day $1 billion record, but either way, Vin Diesel and co. should enjoy their victory lap. "Furious 7" is only the 20th film ever to cross $1 billion at the global box office. It currently sits at number 7 on the list of all-time highest-grossing movies worldwide. 'Anne of Green Gables' Star Jonathan Crombie Dies at 48 Posted: Canadian actor Jonathan Crombie, known to legions of fans as Gilbert Blythe in the CBC version of "Anne of Green Gables," died April 15 of a reported brain hemorrhage. He was 48. Crombie was plucked from relative obscurity to play Blythe in the CBC miniseries, based on the novels by Lucy Maud Montgomery, which launched in 1985 and starred Megan Follows as the titular orphan. He reprised the part in 1987 for the "Anne of Avonlea" TV movie, in 1992 on the spinoff series "Avonlea," and in 2000 for another movie, "Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story." In addition to that iconic role, Crombie was a well-known stage and improv performer, especially in his native Canada, and he also starred in a Broadway staging of the musical "The Drowsy Chaperone" in 2006. His most recent television credit was a guest-starring role this year on CBS drama "The Good Wife." Kevin Sullivan, the producer of the "Anne" miniseries and movies, called Crombie's death "a devastating tragedy," and said the actor mirrored his onscreen alter ego in many ways. "I think for legions of young women around the world who fell in love with the 'Anne of Green Gables' films, Jonathan literally represented the quintessential boy next door, and there were literally thousands of women who wrote to him over the years who saw him as a perfect mate," Sullivan said in an interview with the CBC. " ... In reality, Jonathan was as generous, as kind, as sensitive and as ambitious, in some ways, as the character he came to be identified with." Crombie's sister, Carrie Crombie, told CBC that a "huge, wonderful celebration of life" would be planned for the late actor sometime in the next few weeks. The New 'Jurassic World' Trailer Is Crazy Awesome Posted: Well, if you weren't already pee-your-pants excited for "Jurassic World," that is about to change with the release of the brand new, "global" trailer for the sequel (the fourth in the franchise), opening June 12th. This trailer is insane, finally giving us a look at the new super predator (the Indominus Rex), B.D. Wong's return to the franchise (quietly sinister geneticist alert), and Jake Johnson as what we can only assume is some kind of computer nerd (that mustache though). If you're purposefully been keeping yourself out of the loop on "Jurassic World," then you probably shouldn't watch this trailer, but if you are a fan of dinosaur-filled mayhem, well, get ready - the park is open. What makes this trailer such a sensation is the way that it really establishes just how wrong things are going to go. Again, the trailer focuses a lot on Owen Grady (Chris Pratt), a wise-cracking dinosaur tamer. Bryce Dallas Howard is Claire Dearing, the park operations manager and Grady's former flame. "Corporate thought genetic modification could up the wow factor," she explains. "They're dinosaurs -wow enough?" Grady shoots back. Then it's almost all about this new monster: she killed her brother, clawed out her tracking implant, kills countless security personnel, communicates with other dinosaurs, and generally makes life a living hell for all those nice tourists visiting the island. (Apparently getting off the island is a big problem, Vincent D'Onofrio's security chief explains that "You've got 20,000 people, you've got no more boats, and you don't have enough guns.") Cue Pratt taking control of his raptors and going after the big bad beast. And if that wasn't enough the trailer ends with a water dinosaur coming out of the water and eating a pterodactyl. Truly, we live in an amazing age. Producer Steven Spielberg certainly went out on a limb choosing Colin Trevorrow, whose previous film was the micro-budgeted "Safety Not Guaranteed," to helm a project of this immense scale and scope, but it looks like the gamble paid off. (I mean did you see Jake Johnson's mustache?) No film in the franchise had successfully recreated the original's potent mixture of awe and terror... Until, it seems, "Jurassic World." We can't wait. "Jurassic World" opens on June 12th. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The New 'Fantastic Four' Trailer Is Pretty Fantastic Posted: The first teaser for Fox's expensive reboot of Marvel's "Fantastic Four," was all about mystery and atmosphere. It was intriguing and atmospheric, and certainly hooked those of us who appreciate a less-is-more approach, but we're about to enter the summer movie murder-dome; it's time to show off the goods or get out of the race. And the goods are certainly on display in this new trailer for "Fantastic Four," which beams into cinemas in August. This new trailer sets up the basic premise more clearly: a group of daring scientist adventurers travels to an alternate dimension, get doused with radiation, and return home with superpowers. Reed Richards (Miles Teller) can stretch, Sue Storm (Kate Mara) can turn invisible and has force fields, Johnny Storm (Michael B. Jordan) can light on fire and fly and Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell) turns into a rocky monster known as The Thing. (Also, Victor Domashev (Toby Kebbell) gets zapped and turns bad. (Honestly plot specifics are still a little fuzzy.) The main threat seems to be that their doorway to another dimension has been left open, which will undoubtedly cause certain problems for those us on earth. So they've got to team up and get super-heroic! "Fantastic Four" was directed by Josh Trank, who helmed the low-budget, found-footage superhero romp "Chronicle," and you can tell that he accomplishes a kind of tactile earthiness to something that could have gotten very silly very quickly. It's also nice that it's punctuated with moments of humor, since the first trailer was almost uncomfortably solemn. Other thoughts: The Thing looks great, as does Kate Mara's hair, and hey, it's Reg E. Cathey as Dr. Franklin Storm! That is so, so awesome! "Fantastic Four" lights up on August 7th. Why Can't Any Movie Beat 'Furious 7'? Posted: Everyone knew "Furious 7" would be big. But $300 million in less than three weeks big? This weekend, the car-chase sequel earned an estimated $29.1 million, with a comfortable lead of $5.1 million over its closest rival, new comedy "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2." New horror film "Unfriended" was third, with an estimated $16.0 million. And Disney's annual Earth Day-timed nature documentary, "Monkey Kingdom," opened in seventh place with an estimated $4.7 million. So, again, the seventh installment of an action franchise, in its third week in theaters, still earned nearly $30 million, enough to beat all competitors new and old. After 17 days of release, it's earned $294.4 million, so it should break $300 million in the next couple of days. How does that happen? Part of it is a testimony to the strengths of the franchise, and of this installment in particular, as was clear when the film opened two weekends ago. Indeed, this weekend, it slipped just 50 percent from last week, a modest decline for a film in its third weekend. The movie seems to deliver what it promises, and its word-of-mouth remains strong enough to draw sizable crowds. But part of it also demonstrates how weak the competition is. Indeed, the entire film industry, including "Furious 7's" own studio seems to have ceded the month of April to Vin Diesel & Co., putting nothing but sacrificial lambs up against it. That seems an unfair way to describe "Paul Blart 2," the sequel to an enormously popular comedy. In fact, most weekends, a $24.0 million debut would have been good for first place and would have given distributor Sony reason to rejoice. It's certainly better than any Kevin James movie that doesn't also star Adam Sandler has done in recent years. But maybe Sony sensed some weakness in the film. After all, it's been six years since the original; that's a long time between installments for a comedy series that primarily appeals to young viewers who may have outgrown the franchise. And the film got poor reviews, so older viewers aren't going to see it. Even those who've seen "Blart 2" have provided only middling word-of-mouth recommendations, as indicated by the weak B- grade at CinemaScore. Initial predictions for the film ran as low as $19 million. "Unfriended" got even worse word-of-mouth, with a C grade at CinemaScore. Reviews were OK, not that the young women who drive the horror market care about reviews. The movie's gimmicky cyber-bullying premise could have come off as desperate to be trendy. The film had no star power, though that hasn't stopped other low-budget entries from the Blumhouse horror-film production house from becoming hits. Its R rating may have kept younger potential viewers from seeing it. Given that the film probably cost less than $10 million to make, it didn't have to do very well to break even, and expectations were accordingly modest. Its distributor was Universal, same as "Furious 7," a cash cow the studio wasn't about to jeopardize by mounting any serious competition, even on 2,739 screens. So its $16.0 million debut is very respectable but no threat to the onrushing "Furious 7." As for "Monkey Kingdom," that, too, opened in line with the lower end of expectations. Some Disney nature docs in recent years, notably, "Chimpanzee," have done better (it opened at $10.7 million three Aprils ago), but most have opened with $6 million or less. Last year's "Bears" debuted just $51,000 higher than "Monkey Kingdom." It scored a very high A- grade at CinemaScore, it raised a lot of money for conservation projects (as all the recent Disney nature films have done), and it opened in line with expectations. So Disney should be pleased, even with the movie's seventh-place premiere. Back when studio programmers initially scheduled these films to open in the wake of "Furious 7," they may have considered them to be credible counterprogramming to the testosterone-fueled action spectacle. After all, "Blart 2" was a broad comedy, "Unfriended" a horror film (and only about the fourth one so far this year) that targeted female audiences, and "Monkey Kingdom" was a family movie with cute, real animals. But as box office results have proved throughout the spring, counterprogramming doesn't really work anymore, especially not against a movie with as universal appeal as "Furious 7." The young men targeted by "Blart 2" were also the target for "Furious 7." But so were the young female horror fans "Unfriended" tried to befriend, since the women on-screen in "Furious 7" give as good as the men. (And many of those young women couldn't go see "Unfriended" because of its R rating, while they were not barred from the PG-13 "Furious 7.") As for "Monkey Kingdom," Disney polling found that 51 percent of the audience was over 25. So much for trying to draw young viewers. But while little kids weren't going to be lured away by the drag racers, that wasn't true for their parents and the other grown-ups who turned out to be a significant fraction of "Monkey Kingdom's" audience. A hit as huge as "Furious 7" is supposed to entice people off their couches and get them to go to the multiplex, where those who can't get tickets to sold-out showings will go see something else that's playing. And maybe that's true; maybe "Blart 2," "Unfriended," and "Monkey Kingdom" would have done worse if "Furious 7" hadn't been playing as well. But no one, apparently, went to see these movies just because "Furious 7" didn't appeal to them and they wanted to see something else. If "Furious 7" drew infrequent moviegoers to the multiplex, it also sucked out almost all the oxygen and didn't leave much for any other movie. Next week will close out the month of April with period romantic fantasy "The Age of Adaline" and wartime family drama "Little Boy" (starring Kevin James, of all people). Does anyone really think either of those is going to dethrone "Furious 7"? Not until "Avengers: Age of Ultron" opens on May 1 is "Furious 7" likely to run out of gas. Recap of 'Revenge' Season 4 Episode 20: Burn Posted: There's so much plotting and scheming going on in "Revenge," we don't know how these people have time to eat lobster rolls and bury bodies. This week, Victoria Grayson and Margaux LeMarchal plotted to take down Emily Thorne, and the results were explosive -- in the most literal way possible. Check out Moviefone's recap to find out who died, who was diagnosed with a fatal illness, and who's moving to L.A.! Victoria Makes A Fatal Decision The press is destroying Victoria's life thanks to Emily, so she teams up with Margaux and Louise Ellis to salvage what's left of her reputation. Of course, Margaux hates Louise with a fiery passion (probably because she tried to murder her in a steam room), but they're forced to work together after Victoria gets punched in the stomach by a hooded figure in a parking lot (as ya do). Margaux's plan is simple: to invite the Feds to Victoria's hotel and use the hard drive from Nolan's computer to expose Emily's lies. But please, Em's one step ahead as usual. She stages a fire at Victoria's hotel and easily steals the hard drive, causing Victoria to have a total psychotic break. This former Hamptons' Matriarch just can't even anymore, so she decides to end her war with Em once and for all -- by killing herself. In a truly shocking moment, Victoria changes into a sparkly red dress, breaks into Emily's house, and literally blows the entire place up while sitting in her throne. Is she dead? Only time will tell, but not even Victoria is fire-proof. Jack Leaves On A Jet Plane, Don't Know When He'll Be Back Again Jack Porter has so many feelings these days, most of which have to do with his unrequited love for Emily. Unfortunately, Em's dating Officer Ben Hunter -- but she decides to take a break from their relationship because she has so much on her plate (read: he's extremely needy). You'd think Jack would take this opportunity to once again declare his love for Emily, but instead he decides to pack up his bags and move to Los Angeles. Huh?! Before you start sobbing hysterically and screaming "Jaaaaaack," know this: Nolan gives Emily a pep talk and convinces her that she's actually in love with her childhood bestie (awkward side note: Ben hears their entire conversation). The bad news is that she doesn't make it to the airport in time to stop Jack, and instead she's greeted by Mason Treadwell, who basically spends ten minutes making her feel terrible about herself. Nolan Finds Love, David Makes A Shocking Announcement Nolan and his new social worker boyfriend, Tony, are getting pretty chummy -- but Louise is intent on ruining their relationship. She shows up to a charity event to humiliate her ex-hubby and his new man, but don't worry -- Tony forgives and forgets! Frankly, it's great to see Nolan so happy. Especially when everyone else is, you know, exploding. In other news, David and his facial hair have been spending a lot of time with Stevie (aka Jack Porter's mom), and he breaks some unexpected news to her during their bonding session: he has lymphoma. David doesn't tell Emily about his diagnosis, so expect that emotional bombshell to drop sometime in the coming weeks. And now for some burning questions.... 1. Is David Clarke going to die? Because there doesn't seem to be any narrative reason the show's writers would give him cancer, unless they're planning to kill him off. 2. Is Jack being written off "Revenge"? If he doesn't come back from L.A. to declare his love for Emily yet again, life as we know it will never be the same. 3. Is Victoria dead -- or is this yet another fake out? What. Is. Happening. 'Game of Thrones' Recap: Dany Makes Stark Mistake in Season 5, Episode 2 Posted: Drogon the dragon returned at the end of "Game of Thrones" Season 5, Episode 2, "The House of Black and White," just in time for almost everyone else to abandon their Mhysa. Everyone saw justice as black and white this week, with a lack of common ground causing problems for leaders from The Wall (congrats, Daenerys Targaryen is the mother of dragons, but can't tame them. She wants to be a good ruler but what's fair and what's right? "The House of Black and White" was like Ned and Robb Stark all over again -- especially Robb, when he killed an ally for killing an enemy to try and make a point about justice to allies who only ended up abandoning him. This week, Dany killed one of her own allies in a heartbreaking scene that led to her "children" literally hissing at their "mother" in fury. (Someone should make a gif of that hissing. Just sayin', it's a great way to offer commentary.) No one, except maybe Ser Barristan, will be on Dany's side for that call. Good thing this is just her "test-run" kingdom! Meanwhile, Jon Snow was *thisclose* to getting his lifelong dream of being Jon Stark. He could take back Winterfell from the repulsive Boltons. He could rule the north and help bring peace. Instead, he's the new Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. It's a powerful role too, but not the one he wanted, and almost exactly half of his own people are livid that he's in that position. His life just got a lot harder. Also having a tough time - Brienne of Tarth, who cannot catch a break with the Stark girls. If Jon had said yes to being a Stark, he could connect with Sansa and they could rebuild Winterfell together. Oh well. Honor and duty win, as it would for Ned too. Speaking of Starks, another one may be dropping the name. Arya went to Braavos and kind of reunited with an old friend, only that friend now wants her to become "No One." Can Arya do that, when she's so tied to the person who, whenever there's a quiet moment, goes back to reciting her list of people to kill? Cersei is still on Arya's list of people to kill, and she's busy trying to protect her daughter in Dorne and putting "sycophants" on "the king's" council. She does not have her own uncle's backing, and few people are left on her side too. No ruler is having an easy time right about now, including Prince Doran down in Dorne, who is facing pressure to go to war with the Lannisters over his dead brother, Oberyn. He doesn't want war, but will his own people just push him aside to get their own way? That's a question for several leaders right about now. Read on for a full recap of Episode 2: Opening credits: The map takes us to King's Landing, The Eyrie, Winterfell, The Wall, Braavos, Meereen. Why not Dorne? Arya in Braavos GoT first took us to Braavos last season when Stannis went asking for money from the Iron Bank of Braavos. This place is like Venice with all the waterways. This time Arya sails through the giant legs and heads to The House of Black and White. She says she's not afraid, but maybe she should be. She knocks on the door and the man who answers is a stranger to us. He says there's no one there by the name Jaqen H'ghar. "Please. I've crossed the Narrow Sea. I have nowhere else to go." "You have everywhere else to go." Burn! Shut out, Arya sits down and repeats her list of name. It's shorter now. Cersei. Walder Frey. The Mountain. Meryn Trant. A night passes. Nothing happens. She throws her valar morghulis coin into the water and walks away. Pod & Brienne meet Sansa & Petyr Pod and Brienne head to a tavern and Pod sees Petyr Baelish and dark-haired Sansa Stark sitting on the other side. It's a small world after all (and a new one from the book). Apparently Sansa's dark look doesn't disguise her too well. Sansa asks about the raven scroll that Petyr got last week. "My marriage proposal has been accepted." Uh oh, what proposal? He doesn't tell us, or Sansa, yet. Pod points out to Brienne that Sansa is over there. There are too many knights for them to take on. Brienne approaches and introduces herself, says she gave Catelyn Stark her word that she would protect Sansa. Petyr does a good job of discrediting Brienne and Sansa is still impressionable. Plus, that stupid "murdered by a shadow" story keeps coming back to bite Brienne. The Stark girls keep shutting her down. Sansa saw her at Joffrey's wedding, and now tells her to leave. Dang it. If only Sansa knew who to trust. Then again, Arya didn't either. Brienne gets pissed, and she and Pod are followed through the woods, then get separated. Pod, who has the worst luck ever, is dropped from his horse into the water, but Brienne shows up to save him. They are a team. But where will they go now? Pod points out that both Stark girls rejected her protection, so maybe she's free from her vow. But Brienne knows Sansa is not safe with Littlefinger. Jaime has a new mission Cersei got a message/threat from Dorne. Myrcella, Jaime and Cersei's daughter, is down in Dorne surrounded by people who hate the Lannisters. (Can't blame them, although props to Cersei for that "smirking whore" diss to Margaery.) No missions ever tend to go well, but now Jaime is going to go to Dorne to bring Myrcella home. She's promised to Prince Doran's son, so it's not going to be easy to get her back. Jaime won't bring an army, but he won't be going alone... He should find Brienne and Pod. This is a better mission for them. Bronn dumps Lollys for Jaime Remember how Bronn got engaged to Lollys Stokeworth on his attempt to rise to the top? Well, now we see them taking a stroll on the shore. She prattles on about wedding plans and Bronn just skips stones on the water. He couldn't care less, although he's still planning to take down the older sister, who stands to inherit. "I've been all over the world and if there's one thing I've learned it's that meanness comes around." Yep, Joffrey would agree. They see someone on the wall and it's "Jaime f--kin' Lannister." The bromance is back! Jaime makes Bronn an offer he can't refuse -- promising Lollys to someone else, and promising Bronn a better girl with a better castle, after he helps Jaime with a certain task as far south as south goes. Speaking of south... The snakes are angry Our first actual visit to Dorne! We see Ellaria Sand (Oberyn's lady love, 'memba?) down in Dorne, she's watching Myrcella and her betrothed, Trystane Martell. She's pissed at Prince Doran for doing nothing when his own brother was murdered. Prince Doran argues that Oberyn wasn't murdered, he died in trial by combat. He will bury his brother, but not go to war the way she and the Sand Snakes (Oberyn's daughters) want. Ellaria is furious that Oberyn is dead and the Lannister girl skips around breathing their air: "Let me send her to Cersei one finger at a time." Prince Doran says, "We do not mutilate little girls for vengeance," not while he's in charge. But how long will that be? She leaves him with that threat. His captain makes a motion like "cut her head off?" but Prince D says no. More mercy. Daario and Grey Worm The Unsullied are marching in the streets of Meereen and Daario tells Grey Worm the Unsullied are too conspicious. His own Second Sons blend in better. They bust into a room but see nothing. Daario makes a point about the helpfulness of fear; Grey Worm has forgotten fear and forgotten how to hide when you're afraid. Daario finds someone in a wall. He's a good warrior, you have to give him that, but he's ruthless. Council meeting - execution or trial? They found a Son of the Harpy mask in the room, so they know the guy Daario and Grey Worm found was a member. Former slave Mossador argues that the Harpy man should be killed, he wants to put a collar back on all of their necks. Dany says it would indeed send a message. Ser Barristan counsels restraint, that this man may know something valuable. Daario says he already "questioned" him. Hizdahr zo Loraq asks why this man would want to bring back slavery. Dany wonders if maybe it makes him feel better to know there's someone lower. Mossador says they pay him, great families pay poor men to do it for them. Ser Barristan said the man should get a fair trial to teach the people of Meereen a better way. Mossador said here mercy and fair trial mean nothing to the great families. All they know is blood. Dany now has to make a decision. Ser Barristan brings up the Mad King. When the people rose against him, he set the castles aflame and murdered sons in front of the fathers. He burned them with wildfire and laughed as they screamed. "And his efforts to stamp out dissent led to a rebellion that killed every Targaryen except two." She said she's not her father, but Barristan argues that her father gave his enemies the justice he thought they deserved, and each time it made him feel more powerful and right, until the very end. She says she will not have the Son of the Harpy executed without a fair trial. So he convinced her. But this is not Westeros, and even in Westeros we've seen how that kind of justice in a time of crisis can backfire. If only Ser Jorah were here... or Tyrion. Or Varys. Ser Barristan should not be the only voice from Westeros, since he was a warrior, not a leader/political adviser. On the road with Tyrion and Varys These two. Of all the odd couples in the known world, these two are the most amusing. Tyrion is drinking his way to Volantis, which is on the way to Meereen. Varys mentions that Tyrion was quite good at ruling during his brief tenure as Hand. (Agreed.) Tyrion mentions how Shae begged him to leave King's Landing and he wouldn't go. He liked the power. "People follow leaders, they will never follow us. They find us repulsive." "I find us repulsive." "And we find them repulsive which iswhy we surround ourselves with large, comfortable boxes to keep them away. And yet, no matter what we do, people like us are never really comfortable inside the box. Not for long." That's just a fancy way of Varys and Tyrion patting themselves on the back for thinking outside the box. But Tyrion decides it's time to get out and go for a walk, even with Cersei hunting down dwarfs to find Tyrion. (Great Tyrion quote: "She ought to offer her c-nt. Best part of her for the best part of me.") On that note... King's Landing council gets ugly Someone plops a head in front of Cersei, but it's not Tyrion's head. Qyburn takes it for his creepy experiments. He's now sitting at Cersei's right hand at the council, much to Pycelle's dismay. Qyburn gets to be the new Master of Whisperers too, because he's loyal. Who is Hand of the King? Cersei says it wouldn't be right for her to be the Hand of the King because she's a woman (she must be seething inside as she says that) but she's going to sit there until Tommen comes of age and chooses his own Hand. Lord Tyrell offers to be the acting Hand, but Cersei doesn't want the Tyrells to have too much power so she says the king has assigned him as Master of Coin. He seems pleased enough. Kevan Lannister is on to Cersei, but he says nothing -- until Cersei says the king has asked Uncle Kevan to be Master at War. Kevan wants to hear it from the king himself; Tommen should be there, he argues, so he can learn how to lead. Kevan did not return to the capital to serve as Cersei's "puppet" and watch her stack the small council with sycophants. He calls her out, and does not recognize her authority. "You are the queen mother. Nothing more." He leaves for Casterly Rock. So now Cersei has no family on her side, but also no voices to oppose her. Gilly learns to read, thanks to Shireen Sweet Shireen Baratheon is teaching Gilly to read, up at The Wall. Sam points out that the youngest Lord Commander in history was elected at the age of 10. (And he was a Stark.) Gilly and Sam spar over his lack of patience in teaching. Cutest couple ever. Gilly and Shireen have a talk about greyscale; two of Gilly's sisters died from it. They acted like animals. Foreshadowing for someone to get greyscale a bit later on? Selyse wants Shireen to stay away from Gilly, she's a wildling. Shireen has the worst parents. Well, maybe not the worst, but colder than The Others. Stannis makes his pitch - will Jon Stark rise? Stannis is mad at Jon Snow, as expected, for that merciful arrow shot to Mance Rayder's heart. He went against Stannis' order. Jon says the free folk will never follow him, no matter what he does. The lady of Bear Island, a girl of 10, sent a letter to Stannis saying they know no king but the king in the north, whose name is Stark. The northerners are like the free folk. Davos said they are about to elect a new lord commander, and Ser Alliser Thorne is going to win. What's life going to be like up there for Jon with Alliser as LC? "Unpleasant, I expect." Stannis says Jon's bravery made Alliser look weak. He, Stannis, doesn't punish men for bravery. (Mance, do you agree with that?) Stannis wants Jon to give him the north. Kneel before him, pledge to serve, and he can rise as Jon Stark, Lord of Winterfell. It's the first thing he ever wanted. Sam is happy for Jon, but Jon says he's going to refuse Stannis. No one likes to kneel before you, Stannis, take the hint. New Lord Commander Time to cast tokens for the 998th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. It's Ser Alliser Thorne vs. Ser Denys Mallister. Alliser is going to win, but ... Sam has something to say. He calls out Lord Janos Slynt for his cowardice during the war, and says while that was happening, Jon Snow was leading. Sam makes a great pitch for Jon to be the new LC. Mormont himself chose Jon to be his steward, he saw something in Jon. "He may be young, but he's the commander we turned to when the night was darkest." He's the hero Gotham needs and deserves! Ser Alliser wonders if Jon wants the Night's Watch to rule or the wildlings? "Do you want to choose a man who has fought the wildings all his life or one who makes love to them?" Good points on both sides. When all the tokens are in, it's a tie, until Maester Aemon votes for Jon and puts him over the edge. It helps to have a Targaryen on your side (and in the family?). Meet the new Lord Commander: Jon Snow. Sam is the best friend ever. #JonSnow2016 Arya on the streets She's just wandering around in an alley when three guys stop her and want to steal her sword. She tells them to turn around and go. They say her sword is worth 100 pieces. Arya: "Nothing is worth anything to dead men." Badass. Total queen. The old man from the House of Black and White shows up and just being there scares the men away. Arya follows him back to the house. He gives her back her coin, and reveals his face as Jaqen H'ghar. "You said there was no Jaqen H'ghar here." "There isn't. A man is not Jaqen H'ghar" "Who are you then?" "No one. And that is what a girl must become." Intriguing. Good to see him again. Mhysa's justice Mossador goes to visit the Harpy in the dungeon. The guy tells Mossador, "She doesn't belong here. And no matter how many of you traitors call her 'Mhysa,' she will never be your mother." Next, we see his dead body with the mask on, with a sign next to him saying "Kill the masters." Mossador is next shown before Dany, who asks him "Why." He says for her, Mhysa. She wanted the Harpy dead but her hands were tied. She argues that he was awaiting trial, Mossador had no right. Mossador shares his story, including his own father dying in the fighting. Dany says she isn't the law, the law is the law. Mossador is dragged out for a public execution, to make a point. The people reach out their hands to Mhysa. Even Hizdahr says she should've cut off the "traitor's" head in the Great Pyramid and be done with it; Daario counters that that's what he keeps telling Dany to do to Hizdahr. Dany makes a speech, saying she promised freedom and justice. "One cannot exist without the other." The people call out "brother" to Mossador. It's heartbreaking to hear Mossador call out for "Mhysa" (mother). She says this man killed a prisoner awaiting trial and the punishment is death. The people keep calling out for Mhysa, asking for mercy. Dany won't look at Mossador, who keeps says Mhysa, please. Huge mistake, Dany. When his head comes off, there's silence, then hissing. The tide has turned. The people pick up rocks and throw them. She is their mother no more. Drogon returns Grey Worm and Barristan say they'll guard Dany, but she has them leave. She goes out to her balcony and who should stop by but Drogon. Her biggest child. She is still mother to him, even if he can't be tamed, and doesn't stick around for long. He hasn't forgotten his mother's love. But if she promised freedom and justice, then how does that work for Drogon? He has freedom, but is he killing more people out there? Next week Petyr tells Sansa to avenge her family. Arya looks different. We see Theon and the Boltons. Jon begins his rule. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
