Why 'How to Train Your Dragon' Is the Best Movie Ever Made About Pet Ownership

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 08:00 PM PDT

On the surface, DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon is a fantasy story about a young boy who befriends a dragon and goes off on a wild and exciting adventure. But that's just the surface read. This isn't a fantastical tale of Vikings and mythical creatures as much as it's a touching and beautiful examination of what it's like to be a pet owner. There are countless movies about boys and their dogs, but somehow, it took a movie about a boy and his dragon to actually get it right.    Those dragons are a sly combination of cats and dogs. If there's any doubt out there that Toothless and the other dragons who feature in How to Train Your Dragon are stand-ins for ordinary household pets, just look at how they're animated. Rather...

The Directors of '22 Jump Street' and 'The Lego Movie' Talk About Breaking the Sequel Mold, 'Ghostbusters 3' and More

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 07:00 PM PDT

While speaking with filmmakers Chris Miller and Phil Lord, one thing was unmistakable: these guys were really, really tired. The duo, who created the beloved (albeit short lived) MTV animated series Clone High went on to become one of the most in-demand directing teams in the business, helming Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, surprise smash 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie and this week’s 22 Jump Street. The Lego Movie proved to be one of the most critically and commercially successful films of the year and 22 Jump Street should follow suit. (They also helmed the pilot for the Will Forte series The Last Man on Earth, which will premiere at midseason.) So it’s understandable why they looked so beat: helming two of the year’s biggest studio movies...

Comics on Film: The Biggest Superhero Movies That Almost Never Happened

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 06:00 PM PDT

With all of the recent news surrounding Edgar Wright’s recent departure from Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man, some people seem to be predicting doom for the Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas-starring vehicle. This is premature since cameras have yet to even roll on the film, along with consideration of Marvel Studios’ largely solid track record thus far. Rick Marshall made a great case in this week’s Geek Beat for why fans shouldn’t overreact to the news as it relates to the film, because, chances are, what we’ll ultimately get will be entertaining in that singular Marvel fashion. Of course, though, it’s difficult for fans not to at least partially lament the loss of an exceptional writer and director like Wright on a Marvel Studios...

Vic Armstrong Tells Us About Creating the Intense Action Scenes in 'Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit'

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 05:00 PM PDT

The last time we spoke with Vic Armstrong, it was to promote his autobiography The True Adventures of the World's Greatest Stuntman: My Life As Indiana Jones, James Bond, Superman and Other Movie Heroes. But Armstrong doesn't really do stunt work anymore. He transitioned from stunt coordinator to second unit director, which means that he's been the guy responsible for the amazing action scenes in dozens of big Hollywood movies like Thor, Salt and War of the Worlds. Armstrong's latest second unit director job was on Kenneth Branagh's Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, where he helped deliver some of the movie's best scenes, particularly Chris Pine's first fight in the movie. We spoke with Armstrong about the project for its Blu-ray and DVD release this...

Here's Everything You Need to Know About Film Noir

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Film noir tropes have long been explored by film historians who are fascinated with the genre's stylish cinematography, multilayered characters and pessimistic tone. A 2009 BBC documentary on the genre is now online, exploring the world of the American thrillers and teaching us the rules of noir. Host Matthew Sweet explores the grammar of noir, starting with the rule: "Choose a dame with a past and a hero with no future." Films Double Indemnity and The Postman Always Rings Twice demonstrate how "the blonder and brighter" a woman is on the outside, the more evil she is on the inside. Gotta love a femme fatale. Guests Paul Schrader and Roger Deakins help examine aspects of each film — of which there are many overall. Other rules up for discussion...

New 'Sin City: A Dame to Kill For' Trailer Is an Orgy of Fighting

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT

The first trailer for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For was only a little over a minute long and mainly served to announce that a new Sin City movie was coming out nearly a decade after the first one. This new trailer, however, is a minute longer and really shows off the sequel's expanded cast while still maintaining the highly stylized, highly violent personality that made the first movie such a hit with fans. Interestingly, what stands out most about this trailer isn't how seductive Eva Green is or how cool Mickey Rourke still is or what Jessica Alba looks and sounds like when she gets to play crazy, but how great Powers Boothe is as a bad guy. Of course, there's nothing shocking about that. Boothe has played bad guys before, but man, is this guy intimidating or...

Watch: How ILM's Work on 'Jurassic Park' Changed Movies Forever

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Twenty-one years ago today, Jurassic Park roared into theaters and movies were never quite the same again. I can still remember seeing the film the night before its debut (I was a theater manager at the time, and we screened the print early to make sure it was ready for public viewing), and being absolutely blown away by how real the dinosaurs looked. I’d seen some good CGI prior to that moment – mostly in Terminator 2 – but this work from the guys at Industrial Light & Magic was on a whole other level. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has put together this excellent 10-minute short documentary chronicling how the guys at ILM changed movies forever with their work on Spielberg’s giant dinosaur film. It’s funny to look back now...

See What Michael Bay's Rebooted 'Beavis and Butt-head' Would Look Like

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT

The Michael Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is just weeks away (opening August 8). While we're waiting for a new Bay-tastic reiteration of a childhood classic, the fine folks at Animation Domination High-Def decided to put a Bay-style spin on another nostalgic hit. Icons of the MTV generation, slacker nerd-creeps Beavis and Butt-head originally appeared as part of the network's Liquid Television series. They quickly became a favorite for those who appreciate lewd humor and subversive social commentary (and those of you who don't are probably pod people). This version of Beavis and Butt-head finds the pals more heroic than ever, sporting firearms and roaming a city in chaos. Fellow Highland High student Daria also makes an appearance, with a sexy makeover...

Sony Unveils Plans for a 'Sonic the Hedgehog' Movie

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Back in the old days, before there were Sony PlayStations and consoles made by Microsoft, the biggest battle in the ongoing console war was waged between Nintendo and Sega. The two most infamous combatants in that ongoing conflict were Nintendo’s Mario and Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog – the definitive mascots for each company. The years haven’t been as good to the wickedly fast blue hedgehog as they have been to the Italian plumber, but maybe that will change with today’s news. Sony Pictures, Sega Sammy Group’s Marza Animation Planet, and producer Neal Moritz are bringing Sonic to the big screen, in an all-new feature film that will blend CGI and live-action in a way that will presumably look sort of like The Smurfs. The real question is, can this...

See the Very First Movie Adaptation of 'The Hobbit' Ever Made

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Hollywood has often looked to the literary world for its source material. When it comes to J.R.R. Tolkien's riveting tale of fantasy and adventure The Hobbit, one filmmaker was anxious to bring the story to the big screen. Illustrator, animator and director Gene Deitch teamed up with producer William L. Snyder for the 1966 animated short The Hobbit!. Snyder purchased rights to the saga directly from the Tolkien estate before the novel's popularity was at an all-time high. His contract obligated him to a full-color film, which he started planning as a feature-length production. The project tanked, but when the masses caught on to The Hobbit, Snyder took advantage of its marketability with a new movie. Since his contract never stated the length of the picture, he had...
