Best of the Week: Jason Momoa Cast As Aquaman, Rian Johnson Takes Over 'Star Wars' and More

Posted: 20 Jun 2014 08:00 PM PDT

The Important News: Life isn't complete without some Star Wars news, so we heard Rian Johnson is taking on Episodes VIII and IX, which sorta made up for the bad news about Harrison Ford's broken leg. Nor is it complete without Justice League news, and on that front was the announcement that Jason Momoa has been cast as Aquaman. Oh, and here's your first look at that, sorta. Plus a guide to everything you need to know about the underwater hero. As for other DC Comics characters, we could get another solo Batman movie in 2019.  Need help sorting out when Steven Spielberg's pile of planned movies will arrive? Release dates have been set for at least two of them. More release-date excitement came with Paramount's 2016 slate, including Beverly Hills Cop 4...

What Musical Needs to Be Made into a Movie?

Posted: 20 Jun 2014 07:00 PM PDT

There's a part of me that refuses to see the movie of Jersey Boys on account of its being a musical made for the stage. That can be said of most if not all musicals, really; but such "jukebox musicals" are mainly about giving audiences a live-concert experience of classic songs sung new by great talents of Broadway. On the big screen it's an oddity to have a soundtrack full of covers when the original tunes, which are usually better, are available. But then, I never saw the stage version of Jersey Boys, so the movie should be my best way of now seeing the song-filled story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. It may have been initially intended for one medium, but the alternative is a lot more accessible, now and for the future. Just like any of our other...

Poster-Crop Quiz: Can You Guess These Clint Eastwood Movies?

Posted: 20 Jun 2014 06:00 PM PDT

Heads up, hammerheads, we've got a special (arguably extra-grizzled) edition of the Poster-Crop Quiz themed to Jersey Boys director Clint Eastwood. Ironically the man who made a name for himself playing the Man with No Name is now one of the most recognizable names on the planet... man! Not only is he an established actor, but almost since the inception of his film career, he has also been working behind the camera. We've gathered posters from 10 of Clint's directorial efforts, and then roughed them up Dirty Harry style. See if you can make GOOD on these BADly cropped images that we've left in such an UGLY disarray. The first person to correctly name all 10 posters in the comment section will receive a shout-out in next week's quiz. That is sure to make...

The Best Movie Trailers of the Week

Posted: 20 Jun 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Welcome back to Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we handpick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past week. The Two Faces of January This new trailer for The Two Faces of January is plodding to start, but the moment Viggo Mortensen kills that investigator, you snap to attention. This situation is no joke. From there, we get a string of striking imagery paired with a notably eerie tone that flows right into the tension and panic of the second half of the trailer. There are no gunfights, yelling or car chases, just an infectious beat and powerful build that make the characters’ anxiety palpable.    The Expendables 3 There’s nothing groundbreaking about the latest trailer for The Expendables 3, but...

Gaze Upon the Stars of the 'Saved by the Bell' Movie You Didn't Know Was Happening

Posted: 20 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT

Have you ever thought to yourself, I bet there are some really scintilating stories about the behind-the-scenes lives of the cast of the wholesome '90s teen sitcom Saved by the Bell? No? Weird, because apparently more than a few people invovled with Lifetime Original Movies can't stop thinking about it. Or, more likely, they realize making a movie called The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story will automatically draw some eyeballs. Possibly because it sounds like a porn-parody title, but mainly because we're entering a wave of '90s nostalgia that will probably last a few years. Above is the first picture of the cast for the movie who, aside from the guys playing Zack and AC Slater, bare very little resemblance to the original cast of the show. One of the...

'Looper' Director Rian Johnson Will Write and Direct 'Star Wars: Episode VIII'

Posted: 20 Jun 2014 02:32 PM PDT

Well, this is huge news: J.J. Abrams is not writing or directing Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX. Deadline is reporting that Brick and Looper director Rian Johnson is now tackling both of those movies, however The Wrap is saying he'll only direct VIII and write the treatment for IX. We really don't have any details beyond the reveal at this point, though it really is a bit of a shock. It's understandable that Abrams may not have wanted to dedicate the next five or so years of his life directing Star Wars movies, but to hand off the core storyline of the franchise he's restarting isn't news we were expecting to hear so soon. But at least it's going to a sci-fi director who really knows his stuff. This doesn't change any of the spin-off plans...

Tragedy: Matthew McConaughey May Not Be in the 'Magic Mike' Sequel

Posted: 20 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT

True Detective is over, and the rush of awards season for Dallas Buyers Club has passed, but the McConaissance is still going strong. There is potentially sad news, however, from camp Magic Mike XXL — the sequel to the 2012 Steven Soderbergh-directed stripper drama. According to Gabriel Iglesias, who starred as DJ Tobias in the first film, Matthew McConaughey will not be making a return to the series as nightclub owner Dallas. During his appearance on Dish Nation, per Uproxx, Iglesias told viewers: “Word has it that Matt’s probably not gonna be involved, because he’s worth a lot of money now – that whole Oscar thing – so, but yeah, I’ve signed on for part two.” We’ve heard from other sources that McConaughey has hung up his...

Striking 'Hunger Games' Art Is Some of the Movie's Best Imagery Yet

Posted: 20 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Director Francis Lawrence returns to the Hunger Games series on November 21 with the release of Mockingjay — Part 1 (Part 2 follows on November 20, 2015). In anticipation of the next chapter in the YA best seller turned big-money franchise, Lionsgate has been ramping up its marketing efforts with some gorgeous new character posters and an interactive website. The District Heroes Collection features stunning artwork “saluting” the different citizens from various districts. As the posters come from the affluent and nefarious Capitol, where the deadly Hunger Games take place, they resemble propaganda images from the past. The artworks help push Suzanne Collins’ sprawling universe beyond the big screen and book pages, introducing us to characters other...

'Dead Rising' Movie Will Bring the Zombie Apocalypse to a Screen Near You

Posted: 20 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Get ready for another zombie apocalypse, because Capcom’s Dead Rising is coming to a screen near you. The popular zombie-slaughter franchise has released three main games so far – and sold over 6.5 million copies -- with the most recent appearing on Microsoft’s new Xbox One console. The titles feature bands of survivors trying to traverse treacherous environments (including lots of shopping malls) while avoiding the undead. Players can craft crazy weaponry out of items found throughout their surroundings to slaughter the thousands of zombies shambling around them while they try to solve the mystery behind the outbreak. Sony’s Crackle streaming service has acquired the rights to premiere a full-length, digitally animated feature based on the games...

See What Angelina Jolie Almost Looked Like in 'Maleficent'

Posted: 20 Jun 2014 11:00 AM PDT

We love concept art around here. We also love that concept artists are finally allowed to publicize their portfolios for a movie after it has opened in theaters. Recently this has given us clearer looks at the aliens in Edge of Tomorrow, alternate versions of Godzilla, and even some unused designs for Sentinels in X2: X-Men United. And now the latest bits of alternate reality art to be liberated are Steffen Reichstadt's alternate designs for Angelina Jolie in Maleficent. In the actual movie they went with a design that was basically just cheek bones so high and sharp they look like they'd cut anyone who got too close, but these other tests keep her face more intact and emphasize horns instead. And, as striking as the used design is, we're a little disappointed we...
