The Last Sci-fi Blog: 'The Signal' Director William Eubank Talks About How to Make a Crazy Science Fiction Movie

Posted: 12 Jun 2014 08:00 PM PDT

There's no other way to describe it: The Signal is a crazy movie. What begins as a road-trip movie quickly transforms into science fiction nightmare as the young heroes encounter something... out of this world... and find themselves held captive in a government facility and interrogated by a mysterious scientist (Laurence Fishburne). From there, it becomes something else altogether. It's so nutty that you don't even notice that this is a low-budget production from a second-time director. Once it starts moving, it never slows down and constantly finds new ways to top itself. We sat down with director William Eubank to discuss the film as it continues to expand in limited theatrical release. Topics of conversation included Stephen King, "cool"...

The Internet Finds a Great New Use for the 'Paddington' Bear Movie

Posted: 12 Jun 2014 07:00 PM PDT

We’re still months away from the holidays, but the folks behind Paddington want to give you plenty of time to get ready for the literary bear’s new big-screen adventure due later this year. As such, we’ve got a trailer and some horror-themed memes featuring the lovable teddy in today’s news. The new clip for the film is sure to appeal to kids (and probably unlikely to appeal to their parents) as it features the tiny brown bear getting into all sorts of hilarious mishaps after being left alone in the bathroom. Hopefully Hugh Bonneville’s insurance agent was able to up his homeowners coverage on that phone call, because he’s clearly going to need some major renovations after Paddington is done tearing up the joint. Check out the clip below...

According to her, this is the studio's current timeline: May 2016 – Batman v Superman July 2016 – Shazam Xmas 2016 – Sandman May 2017 – Justice League July 2017 – Wonder Woman Xmas 2017 – Flash and Green Lantern team-up May 2018 – Man of Steel 2 Not only that, but Finke is reporting the reason Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's production start had to slip a little bit is because the studio needed more time to sign contracts with the actors who will be starring in all...

Grumpy Cat Is Getting a Lifetime Movie That Somehow Crosses 'Home Alone' with 'Die Hard'

Posted: 12 Jun 2014 04:30 PM PDT

Image memes have already begun invading all your time spent on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and beyond, and soon they'll be invading your movies, too. At least if you watch the Lifetime Channel. That's where Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever will be found this holiday season. Yes, this is the second time someone has tried to make a movie about Grumpy Cat. Rocko's Modern Life writer and Hop director Tim Hill is helping bring the project to life. Lifetime describes it as "a little Home Alone and a little Die Hard," which sounds great until you remember this is a movie starring a cat who is famous because it looks sad all of the time. We're not sure how you get those two movies out of a plot about a 12-year-old girl who can communicate with a cat that no...

Harrison Ford Injured on 'Star Wars' Set; Reportedly Airlifted to Hospital

Posted: 12 Jun 2014 03:36 PM PDT

Reports have been flooding in this afternoon that Harrison Ford was injured on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII. Full details are a bit scarce at this time, but one thing is consistent: his ankle got injured by a door on the set of the Millennium Falcon. How damaged? That's where the reports vary. Variety initially said Ford sprained his ankle and that Disney issued a statement saying "He was taken to a local hospital and is receiving care." That doesn't sound too horrific, however, British outlet The Mirror makes the event sound quite a bit more intense. According to them, Ford was crushed when a hydraulic door fell on him. Medics rushed to his side, the police came, and then Ford was put on a stretcher and airlifted to a hospital with a specialized fracture...

See Tom Hardy Play Twins in First Image from 'Legend'

Posted: 12 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT

Tom Hardy is no stranger to playing outlaws (Bronson and Lawless, to name only two), but his latest crime movie takes things to the next level by giving Hardy two different roles to play at the same time.  In Legend, Hardy plays Ron and Reggie Kray, twin brothers who ran London's criminal underground in the 1960s. And if that doesn't sound inticing enough, you should know that it's the newest movie from L.A. Confidential and Man on Fire screenwriter Brian Helgeland. Joining Hardy in the film are Emily Browning, David Thewlis, Christopher Eccleston, Chazz Palminteri, Tara Fitzgerald and Taron Egerton. And if you'd like to get a jump on the movie (which doesn't have a release date), you could read John Pearson's The Profession of Violence, the...

Stunning First 'Birdman' Trailer: Michael Keaton Tries to Put His Superhero Past Behind Him

Posted: 12 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Birdman is a dark comedy about an actor, once famous for playing a superhero, who struggles to find respect in the late stages of his career, and it starts to drive him a little crazy. That's a pretty promising plot all on its own right, but cast Michael Keaton as that tortured actor, and all his Batman baggage brings a brilliant bit of meta awareness to the whole project. Though Birdman is the latest movie from Alejandro González Iñárritu, it looks nothing like his very serious previous films (21 Grams, Babel, Bitiful) and more like something Alfonso Cuaron or Jean-Pierre Jeunet might dream up. Keaton looks utterly perfect in the role, and the supporting cast around him (Edward Norton, Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis, Merritt Weaver, Amy Ryan, Emma...

Watch: The TV Censored Version of 'Showgirls' Features Hilarious Dubbed Dialogue and Digital Bras

Posted: 12 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Paul Verhoeven’s Showgirls has a well-earned reputation as one of the campiest movies in cinematic history. From the cheesy dialogue, the terrible acting and the painfully awful screenplay, it’s a monument to ineptitude – yet it’s oddly watchable, if only to marvel at how Elizabeth Berkley went from a good girl on Saved by the Bell to a topless dancer. We’re not sure who decided that editing Showgirls for mainstream television was a good idea – because chopping out all the profanity and hilariously choreographed sex scenes sort of defeats the purpose of watching Showgirls in the first place – but we’re glad someone did, because the results are actually every bit as entertainingly awful as the unedited version of the film. To make...

New 'Jurassic World' Photos Show Off a Hunky Chris Pratt and Kids About to Have a Bad Day

Posted: 12 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT

If you're looking for your first glimpse of a dinosaur in Jurassic World, you're not going to find them in this trio of images from the A.V. Club. We're glad that's the case, though. We're still a year away from the movie, so it'd be a shame if Universal started tossing the dinosaurs out left and right this early in the process. Mystery in movies is still cool, after all. So what can we infer from these pictures? Three simple things:   1. Chris Pratt is Hollywood's next big leading man. If you've seen any of his work on Parks and Rec, you know that Chris Pratt has a great handle on comedy and heartfelt drama. And going off the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer alone, he makes a pretty good action hero. So, yeah, we're guessing...

'The Interview' Trailer and Poster: James Franco and Seth Rogen Assassinate North Korea

Posted: 12 Jun 2014 10:00 AM PDT

Can the brand of raunchy, irreverent comedy practiced by James Franco and Seth Rogen translate internationally -- even into North Korea? The first trailer for The Interview says… yes! Franco and Rogen play the host and producer, respectively, of a television tabloid show that lands a rare interview with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. (He's a fan of the show.) Their intention is to demonstrate that they're serious journalists; instead, they find themselves recruited by the CIA to assassinate Kim. The movie is the second directing effort by Rogen and Seth Goldberg, who previously teamed on last year's apocalyptic comedy This Is the End; after destroying the world, the prospect of killing a top government official probably doesn't seem too daunting. Mixing...
