Posted: 19 Jun 2014 08:00 PM PDT If you've made very serious films like The French Connection, The Exorcist, Sorcerer, To Live and Die in L.A., Bug and Killer Joe, then you'd be justified in casting a rarified eye on everyone around you, but as I recently sat down for a long chat with director William Friedkin ahead of two revival screenings of his movies at the Alamo Drafthouse, I discovered he's not the intimidating, cold presence you may assume based entirely on his movies. Friedkin is jovial, warm, incredibly intelligent and every answer of his feels like it could spin off into 20 different stories you'd be dying to hear. If anything, he's all the more interesting because he's not what you'd expect from a filmmaker with his background (he's also directed dozens of... What Great Scenes Came Out of Bad Movies? Posted: 19 Jun 2014 07:00 PM PDT This week marked the 25th anniversary of Ghostbusters II, a sequel that very few people consider to be a good movie. Some us, though, don't mind watching it for a few favorite moments, some of them involving Peter MacNicol, some involving Bill Murray, some involving Rick Moranis, some involving the river of slime. There are genuinely great bits in what's otherwise a mediocre comedy, and that's something that happens a lot. Those gold nuggets wrapped in a ball of crap can be the stuff that makes a guilty pleasure, but when they're really notable is when we can't even use them to defend the bigger picture. It's one thing to totally enjoy, say, Howard the Duck (as I do), but it's another to only appreciate Jeffrey Jones's performance in the... The Minds Behind 'Sinister' Are Bringing Back 'The Outer Limits' Posted: 19 Jun 2014 06:07 PM PDT Scott Derrickson is a busy man. He's got Deliver Us from Evil coming out in a few weeks, he'll be producing Sinister 2 later this year, and he just landed directing duties on Marvel's Doctor Strange. But that's not busy enough, so he and his Sinister cowriter C. Robert Cargill have just landed writing duties on a new The Outer Limits movie. MGM is producing the feature version of the classic sci-fi anthology series, though this movie won't contain multiple stories. It'll actually be a single, feature-length adaptation of Harlan Ellison's fantastic episode "Demon with a Glass Hand," about a man who is sent into the past in order to save the future. It's been wrongly spread over the years that it was this story that Ellison sued James... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 19 Jun 2014 05:00 PM PDT Welcome to The Last Sci-fi Blog, our biweekly column about all things science fiction in movies. With Jupiter Ascending pushed to early 2015, this month has become suddenly devoid of big science fiction releases, but fret not! While we may not be able to pick apart the latest film from the siblings Wachowski, we can look ahead to a few exciting films and do what the Internet was made for: speculate widly! That New Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Trailer Promises Something Really Special Only fools make up their minds about movies based solely on trailers... so go ahead and give me a silly hat and demand that I dance to entertain your noble court, because Dawn of the Planet of the Apes looks nothing short of spectacular. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is an... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Today's Big Movie Rumor: Ben Affleck's Solo 'Batman' Movie to Arrive in 2019 Posted: 19 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT If Marvel Studios has proven anything, it's that having a strategic, multiyear plan for its superhero movies is definitely the way to go. According to Marvel's Kevin Feige, they've got boards full of potential movies all the way through the year 2028, and fans have no problem thinking that far out because, hey, at the very least it continually gives them something to look forward to. Warner Bros., which owns the film rights for DC Comics, looks to be readying its own multiyear lineup, too, with recent announcements suggesting a potential slate of three DC movies per year, or at least three in 2016 and 2017. None of those included a new solo Batman movie, though. Sure, Ben Affleck will play Batman in multiple team-up movies, like Batman v Superman: Dawn of... The Fascinating Story of How VHS Beat Betamax in the Great Videotape Format War Posted: 19 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT When we talk about the great wars of the Western world, cineastes are more than likely to bring up the battle between Sony's Betamax and JVC's VHS. YouTuber EngineerGuy recently discussed the real reasons that VHS succeeded in the great format war and Betamax failed. Unleashed upon movie lovers about one year apart, Betamax was introduced to the market first, boasting the ability to "watch whatever whenever." It was essentially the first On Demand service, allowing users to record television shows via the near 40-pound machine. VHS came along and quickly became an industry competitor. VHS cassette tapes were capable of recording two hours worth of media, making them perfect for the movie market (as compared to the one-hour capable... New Images of Shredder and Ronan the Accuser Make Us Miss Movie Trading Cards Posted: 19 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT For whatever reason, collectible cards don’t seem to be a big deal these days – unless you’re talking Magic: The Gathering and things like that. I miss the old days of opening up a wax pack, flipping excitedly through the contents, then breaking a tooth on an ancient and flavorless piece of rock masquerading as bubble gum. I really miss movie cards – with all these superhero movies coming out each summer, this seems like the perfect era for their return. Since that doesn’t seem to be happening naturally, we decided to help the process along on our own. Here are what we think you might find on the back of a card commemorating Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle's Shredder and Guardians of the Galaxy's Ronan. Think of this like the tale of the... This Video Will Totally Help You Understand Christopher Nolan's 'Inception' Posted: 19 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT Just when you thought you were safe from the overanalyzation of Christopher Nolan's mind-bending 2010 thriller Inception, we have yet another interpretation for your perusal. But seriously, we have nothing against this eight-minute video essay from Darren Foley of Must See Films. Foley presents some interesting ideas to mull over, including the use of film titles in Inception as a way to introduce narrative and character concepts. He also has plenty to say about the whole spinning top totem (which might actually have more to do with the ring Leonardo DiCaprio's Cobb is wearing) and the film's hotly debated ending. If you're still reeling from Nolan's dream-stealing story and are looking to go deeper, Foley's video should hit the spot. Feel free... See a 'Book of Mormon' Musical Number Animated in the Style of 'South Park' Posted: 19 Jun 2014 11:00 AM PDT Trey Parker and Matt Stone are the men behind the wildly popular television series South Park, its movie, and the even more wildly popular Broadway musical The Book of Mormon -- so it was probably only a matter of time before someone merged the two things into one. You know we love a good mash-up, and that’s exactly what The Book of Mormon Comes to South Park is. If you’ve been waiting for the magical day when Mormons invade South Park to spread the love of Jesus, your wait has ended. Simon Chong has crafted an awesome video that brings the Mormon missionaries to the small town to spread the gospel, in the distinctive animation style that has made South Park a hit for years on Comedy Central. The video features the musical’s opening number... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
