Channing Tatum, Zac Efron, and More Join Bear Grylls In the 'Wild' For New Series Posted: British survivalist Bear Grylls is returning to network TV with a new outdoor series -- and he's bringing some celebrity friends along for the ride. Grylls will headline "Running Wild with Bear Grylls," a six-episode series for NBC, with each episode starring a different celeb who joins Grylls for a 48-hour adventure. The big names that will be joining Grylls include Channing Tatum, Zac Efron, and Ben Stiller, along with Tom Arnold, former NFL player Deion Sanders, and "Today" anchor Tamron Hall. "Running Wild" will feature a host of different outdoor activities in a variety of locales, including skydiving in the Catskills, repelling down cliffs in Utah, and braving torrential winds and rains in Scotland. Grylls said in a statement that in addition to the adventure element, the show would also expose both viewers and his celebrity guests to different parts of the globe, and hopefully foster some education in the process. "'Running Wild' allows viewers to see inside the hearts and minds of these guests in a very open, honest and vulnerable way, pushing them out of their comfort zones and seeing what they are like in real life when stripped of all the benefits of celebrity," Grylls's statement said. "Bear's incredible spirit is absolutely contagious, not only with his celebrity partners but with the viewing audience as well, said Paul Telegdy, president of alternative and late night programming at NBC. "We can't wait to see how these epic adventures will profoundly change those who take the challenge." "Running Wild with Bear Grylls" debuts on NBC on July 28. Ben & Jerry's Introduces 'Saturday Night Live'-Themed Flavors Posted: There's probably a lot of overlap between people who love ice cream and people who love "Saturday Night Live," and to capitalize on that affection, Ben & Jerry's is creating four new flavors inspired by sketches on the long-running series. The ice cream purveyors made the announcement this week that they're creating a new line of flavors called SNL Batches in honor of the series' upcoming 40th season. Four flavors will be released throughout the year, and two have already been announced. They are: Gilly's Catastrophic Crunch, inspired by the maniacal Kristen Wiig character, made with chocolate and sweet cream ice creams with caramel clusters, fudge-covered almonds, and a marshmallow swirl; and Lazy Sunday, inspired by one of "SNL"'s first digital shorts (and Lonely Island collaborations), starring Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell, made with vanilla cake batter ice cream with chocolate and yellow cupcake pieces and a chocolate frosting swirl. Sadly, these flavors are only available in Ben & Jerry's scoop shops -- not sold as pints in stores -- so their availability is limited. Check out the Ben & Jerry's website for a list of locations, and keep your eyes peeled for the next two flavors to be revealed. 'The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story' Will Unfold on Lifetime Posted: Inspired by the salacious stories revealed by series star Dustin Diamond, Lifetime is making a movie about the behind the scenes action on "Saved by the Bell." Depending on your penchant for '90s nostalgia and cheesy teen TV programming, you're either going to be -- like Jessie Spano -- so excited, or so scared. (Or maybe a little of both.) "The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story" will be in the same vein as Diamond's 2009 memoir, "Behind the Bell," which recounted that cast members were sleeping with each other -- even having threesomes -- and doing drugs throughout the series' run. All except Diamond, of course, who really personified his nerd alter ego, Screech, in those days. (Cue sad violin music for Diamond.) While "Unauthorized," like its title suggests, won't be a direct adaptation of that book, it will contain similar scenarios, collected through numerous new interviews conducted to write the screenplay. The flick will follow the series' original six leads from their fresh faced debuts to their ascension to superstar status throughout the show's 1989-1993 run. BuzzFeed has the scoop on who's playing who, and notes that "Bell"'s original casting director, Robin Lippin, also cast these six leads. They are: Dylan Everett ("Degrassi: The Next Generation") as Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who played Zack Morris; Sam Kindseth ("Shameless") as Dustin Diamond, who played Screech; Julian Works ("Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones") as Mario Lopez, who played A.C. Slater; newcomer Alyssa Lynch as Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, who played Kelly Kapowski; Tiera Skovbye ("Supernatural") as Elizabeth Berkley, who played Jessie Spano; and Taylor Russell McKenzie as Lark Voorhies, who played Lisa Turtle. "The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story" premieres on Lifetime on September 1. Fingers crossed Dennis Haskins just plays himself. The Real Reason Lupita Nyong'o Didn't Want to Pull a Jennifer Lawrence at the Oscars Posted: Jennifer Lawrence probably isn't thrilled that her now-infamous fall at the 2013 Oscars is a cautionary tale, though she can probably forgive her former Best Supporting Actress rival, Lupita Nyong'o, for worrying about repeating that gaffe. Nyong'o, who graces the July cover of Vogue magazine, revealed in the accompanying interview that in the surreality surrounding the moment she won the statuette earlier this year, one glaring thought shone through. Luckily, Nyong'o stayed upright, and delivered a powerful, beautiful speech, encouraging young people to follow their dreams. It's a message that she herself applied, though the "12 Years a Slave" star admitted that it took her many years to realize that her passion was worth pursuing. It seems everything worked out for the actress, who remains humble about her success. "I had already gotten the [Oscar] nomination, which was truly, truly astounding, and enough," Nyong'o said. "Even in my dreams of being an actor, my dream was not in the celebrity. My dream was in the work that I wanted to do." So far, her lack of high-profile trips -- and her impressive filmography -- bodes well for keeping that dream alive. Harrison Ford's 'Star Wars: Episode VII' Injury Is Actually a Broken Leg Posted: It turns out that Harrison Ford's injury on the set of "Star Wars: Episode VII" was more serious than previously reported. According to Ford's publicist, the actor broke his leg, not his ankle -- though the star is doing well now. BBC News reports that Ina Treciokas, Ford's publicist, released a statement confirming that Ford's left leg was broken during an accident on the "Episode VII" set last week. "His surgery was successful and he will begin rehab shortly," Treciokas's statement said. "He's doing well and looks forward to returning to work." That return isn't scheduled for another eight weeks, though J.J. Abrams and co. have assured fans that Ford's injury won't negatively affect the "Episode VII" production. Reports surfaced shortly after Ford's injury was revealed that the accident occurred when a door fell on Ford during the shooting of a scene involving Han Solo's iconic spaceship, the Millennium Falcon. Emergency personnel were summoned to the set last Thursday with a call about a man being injured by a garage door, and Ford was eventually airlifted to a local hospital; initial statements about the incident said Ford injured his ankle. "Star Wars: Episode VII" -- starred a potentially hobbled Han Solo -- hits theaters on December 18, 2015. Chelsea Handler to Host Talk Show on Netflix Posted: After weeks of rumors and speculation -- much of it coming from the comedienne herself -- it's official: Chelsea Handler is moving to Netflix. Handler and the streaming service announced Thursday their intention to create a new show, which is set to begin airing in 2016. Its exact format and frequency (will it debut in batches, like other Netflix originals, or weekly, like Handler's current gig, "Chelsea Lately"?) is still being developed, though both parties said they were excited to work with the other. The new, as-yet-untitled series "will feature an updated format that still encompasses Chelsea's unfiltered opinions on topical entertainment and cultural issues, as well as her signature guest interviews," Netflix said in a statement. Indeed, that "updated format" is a key piece of the streaming service's mission, a sentiment echoed by Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. "[T]he Internet has disrupted many of the conventions of traditional television and together with Chelsea Handler, Netflix is looking forward to reimagining the late night talk show for the on-demand generation, starting with the late night part," Sarandos said in a statement. The experimental aspect of this deal is sure to appeal to Handler, who's made no secret of her frustration with the subject matter she's dealt with during her tenure at E!. Following the announcement of her move to Netflix, Handler said in a statement that she was eager to move forward. "If I was going to continue working in this industry, I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested," the comedienne said. "I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were, and when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move. "I'm more excited than I've been in awhile, and the team at Netflix is the most forward thinking, alert group I've sat down with in ages. No offense to the 'Shahs Of Sunset.'" Handler's Netflix deal also includes a stand-up special, set to premiere on the streaming service on October 10, and four "docu-comedy specials" that will air in 2015. "Chelsea Lately" will air its last episode on E! on August 26. [via: CNN, h/t Vanity Fair] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Marvel's 'Doctor Strange' Adds a Writer and an Oscar-Winner to Its List of Potential Leads Posted: While Disney and Marvel have announced a director for their proposed "Doctor Strange" movie, little else about the project has been revealed, especially in terms of potential star or release date. But more details seem to be firming up, with a report that Marvel is close to hiring a new screenwriter (one that genre fans are, for better or worse, very familiar with) and a new actor being added to the list of potential Doctors. Firstly, Deadline is reporting that Jon Spaihts, who made his initial splash on a sci-fi screenplay called "Passengers" that appeared on the 2007 edition of the Black List (a list that circulates around Hollywood of that year's best unproduced screenplays) and later contributed the first draft of what would ultimately become Ridley Scott's pseudo-prequel "Prometheus," is set to write "Doctor Strange." (If you want to hear about what his version was like, there's a great commentary track that features Spaihts and the eventual screenwriter Damon Lindelof; and Spaihts version sounded terrific.) While he's worked on some high profile projects since then, nothing has come to fruition ("Passengers" is still in development hell, although with Keanu Reeves attached to lead). Well, if everything goes through, then at least he'll know that this movie will make it to the big screen (come hell or high water). It seems that Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer wrote an initial draft but that it will most likely be discarded in favor of the Spaihts draft. Deadline also reports that Jared Leto has been added to the list of potential leads (Doctor Strange is the "Sorcerer Supreme" of the Marvel universe, although it's unclear what track this will take), joining Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch in the mix. From Oscar winner to world class magician? Could be. AP Photo/Lionel Cironneau This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Game of Thrones' Meets 'The Brady Bunch' in This Opening Sequence Mashup (VIDEO) Posted: Redoing the "Game of Thrones" title sequence in a variety of styles has become a geeky pastime, seemingly, and Wil Wheaton, the former "Star Trek" star and big time geek, has now thrown his hat into the ring with a "Brady Bunch" mash-up that is actually pretty funny and endearing. And you can watch it below! The clip comes courtesy of his new Syfy series "The Wil Wheaton Project," which apparently is like a super nerdy version of "Talk Soup," with Wheaton standing in front of a green screen and throwing to things (and maybe talking about nerdy news topics, we're not sure). Anyway, as he admits, the "Game of Thrones" opening credits are maybe some of the best in television history but do a crummy job of explaining the complicated interpersonal relationships of the characters... which can obviously be rectified by a "Brady Bunch"-style opening. The clip is only a little over a minute long and that doesn't give you too much time to go into the characters, and you really, really have to strain to overlook the painful canned laughter that they pipe in to make the whole thing seem funnier, but it is pretty cute and clever and as far as redoing "Game of Thrones" openings, it ranks pretty high (although we did love that eighties version). The Final 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' Trailer Will Exceed Your Expectations (VIDEO) Posted: Up until now, the marketing for Fox's upcoming "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," a sequel to the surprise 2011 hit "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," has been kept purposefully obscure (although this might be because the complex visual effects were taking too long to finish and not because of some deliberate intent). With the movie opening in a few weeks (July 11th), Fox has decided to unleash a trailer that gives you a much better glimpse at what the "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" looks like. The movie is set ten years after the first one and follows the efforts of a human survivor of the virus that has wiped out nearly all of humanity (played by "Zero Dark Thirty" breakout Jason Clarke) as he attempts to form a bond with the members of the ape society, led once again by Caesar (Andy Serkis). From there, things get complicated and then go to hell. Hey, it's not called "Planet of the Humans," right? This new trailer is full of moody imagery, like the opening moments when giant steel doors open, revealing apes on horseback. "Apes do not want war," Caesar cries out. But unfortunately, it looks like that's what they're going to get, since there are militaristic villains on both side of the line, with Gary Oldman's character wanting an all-out mass extermination of the apes, and a few of the apes (it looks like being led by Toby Kebbell, although we're honestly not sure) also urging for the violent option. While some of the trailer might give away a little too much (we would have loved to have seen the sequence where one of the apes "plays" with a machine gun until it violently murders two men), it does a great job of suggesting the scope and tone of the movie, and is still so quick that it leaves enough to the imagination. TV #TBT: Little Anna Paquin Wins An Oscar Back In 1994 (VIDEO) Posted: Anna Paquin's career certainly started out with a bang. In 1993 the Canadian-born, New Zealand-raised actress landed her first major movie role and she's pretty much been working since. That movie was "The Piano," and her acclaimed performance ended up earning her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She was only 11 -- the second youngest person to ever win an Oscar. (Tatum O'Neal holds the title at 10 for "Paper Moon.") So, in anticipation of this coming Sunday's "True Blood" season premiere, let's take a look back at the adorable Anna from way back when. Watch her in utter shock as she accepts her big award: This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Sequel Movie Mistakes: 9 'Oops' Moments From Blockbuster Follow-Ups (PHOTOS) Posted: Let's be honest, sequels rarely live up to their popular predecessors. With a boatload of cash on the line, who can blame classics such as "Home Alone" and "Superman" for spawning inferior follow-ups? Still, that's no excuse for some obvious blunders. While not every mistake is cringe-worthy, the "High School Musical 2" goof is especially painful and really makes you wonder who wasn't paying attention. Here are 9 "oops" moments from blockbuster sequels. As usual, all photos are courtesy of MovieMistakes. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The Roots' Harry Potter Rap and Mike Tyson Making Eggs Lead the Late Night Roundup (VIDEO) Posted: "Tonight Show" house band The Roots are a great part of Jimmy Fallon's whole late night experience, and last night they proved just how awesome they are once again. Turns out, Tarik is a big Harry Potter fan. Please enjoy his epic rap about all things Hogwarts. All aboard!
Later, Jimmy got a wild ride from a new elephant friend. Over on "Late Night", Mike Myers revealed to Seth how he proposed to his wife. (It involves English soccer.) And Dana Carvey stopped by David Letterman, but he wasn't without on one of his signature impersonations. What's a late night visit without a Johnny Carson impression anyway?
