If Clint Eastwood Can Do It, Anyone Can: 10 Directors Who Need to Make a Musical

Posted: 18 Jun 2014 08:00 PM PDT

Sometimes good musicals come from directors you might not expect. Brian De Palma made Phantom of the Paradise. Robert Altman made Popeye. And now Clint Eastwood brings us his adaptation of the Broadway hit Jersey Boys. So since anyone can make a musical, here are some directorial candidates who need to make one ASAP.   Quentin Tarantino Even when holding back a little to fit a concept (yes, I'm talking about Death Proof), Tarantino always manages to bring some kind of must-see filmmaking bravado and originality to his work. Applying that to a musical would have to result in something unique and exciting. And probably bloody.   Edgar Wright The detailed comic precision that goes into every Edgar Wright movie would play well in a musical setting. Shaun...

Everything You Need to Know About Aquaman, DC's Newest Big-Screen Superhero

Posted: 18 Jun 2014 07:00 PM PDT

He's one of the pillars of the Justice League, having been an original founding member of the team, and is the subject of great storytelling by some of comics' best creators. "He talks to fish, so what?" That seems to be the representative attitude by many people who don't know about the character beyond the fact that he dwells in the ocean, but fact is DC Comics has managed to shape Aquaman into one of the publisher's most compelling characters, carrying the burden of a throne that he doesn't always want. Aquaman Begins Aquaman was created in 1941 by writer Mort Weisinger and artist Paul Norris. Originally able to speak the "language of the sea," Aquaman could confer with fish and other sea creatures and enlist their aid when he felt...

First 'Straight Outta Compton' Pic Shows Who Will Be Playing Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E

Posted: 18 Jun 2014 06:00 PM PDT

Biopics about famous musicians are all too common, but what makes Straight Outta Compton stand out isn't just that it's about controversial '80s rap group N.W.A., but that it's being produced by the surviving members of N.W.A. themselves. And if that weren't a close enough connection between the subjects and the movie about them, Ice Cube is actually being portrayed by his real son, O'Shea Jackson Jr., in the movie. Starting from the top left corner and going counterclockwise, we have Ice Cube, his son O'Shea Jackson Jr. as '80s Ice Cube, Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre., the real Dr. Dre, and lastly director F. Gary Gray (who got his big break when he directed Ice Cube in Friday) in the middle. Straight Outta Compton will...

Posted: 18 Jun 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Welcome to the YA Movie Countdown, our resident expert’s biweekly guide to young-adult book-to-film adaptations. There were a lot of famous faces in Divergent and only a select few got a significant amount of time in the spotlight, but that’s not stopping director Robert Schwentke and his team from sticking to the source material and throwing even more major players from the book into the adaptation of Insurgent, due out on March 20 of next year. At the end of the first film, Tris, Caleb, Peter, Four and Marcus flee the city and board a train heading for the perimeter. Dauntless is compromised and Abnegation was devastated by Jeanine’s simulation, so now it’s off to find allies in new places from different factions. On top of that, there...

Trivia: Mike Judge Says 'Office Space' Forced TGI Fridays to Eliminate Its Button Flair

Posted: 18 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT

At some point between your childhood and today, chain restaurants like TGI Fridays decided to get rid of the flair they had their servers wear. What is flair? Well, remember all those silly buttons waiters and waitresses would wear? Those were called "pieces of flair," and if you're familiar with the movie Office Space there's a great running gag about said flair as it pertains to Jennifer Aniston's disinterest in wearing any.   It was a cute, relatable joke, and those of us familiar with eating in Fridays and places like it instantly connected with the reference, one of many quoted repeatedly by your coworkers whenever someone gets a little too tipsy during Friday happy hour. So in a rare case of a random gag in a movie inciting widespread...

Watch Tim Burton's Super-Rare 'Hansel and Gretel' Movie from 1983

Posted: 18 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT

The Disney Channel aired a surreal version of the classic fairy tale Hansel and Gretel on Halloween in 1983. The 35-minute live-action short, directed by then-unknown filmmaker Tim Burton, featured Japanese actors in the parts of the siblings who are hunted by a cannibal witch deep in the forest and lured to a house made of cake and candy. The film's near avant-garde sets reveal the beginnings of a style that would later become popular in Burton's Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, here more spare. Burton made the movie while employed as an animator at Disney for a mere $116,000. The short practically vanished from the face of the Earth — at least until this week when some kind soul posted it to YouTube. Travel back in time to Burton's early years...

Paramount's 2016 Lineup Will Feature 'Beverly Hills Cop 4,' 'Transformers 5,' 'G.I. Joe 3,' 'Star Trek 3' and More

Posted: 18 Jun 2014 01:15 PM PDT

Throughout the year movie studios and movie-theater owners hold various conventions wherein they get together to show one another what the future holds. In the U.S., this big event is called CinemaCon. In Europe, the big one is creatively called CineEurope, and this week Paramount gave a presentation to theater owners that mentioned a rather daunting list of movies the studio will be releasing in 2016 (according to THR): Ben Hur Paranormal Activity 5 Beverly Hills Cop 4 Transformers 5 G.I. Joe 3 Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters 2 Star Trek 3 Some of those movies, like Star Trek 3 and Transformers 5, have been known for awhile, but a few are a bit surprising. A 2016 date for Paranormal Activity 5 means there will have been an unprecedented gap of three years between...

Ooh, Is This What the T-800 Robot Will Look Like in 'Terminator: Genesis'?

Posted: 18 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT

The 2014 Licensing Expo is happening in Las Vegas as we speak – and while that might not sound like a particularly exciting thing in and of itself, it’s actually pretty cool if you’re into some early sneak peeks at coming attractions on the movie front. Perhaps the most interesting thing uncovered at this year’s event is this model of a T-800 promoting Terminator: Genesis. Is this an early glimpse of what the killing machines will look like in the upcoming film? It seems likely. The new version doesn’t look substantially different from the older T-800s, but we get excited about giant murderous robots around here and wanted to share. There are countless other properties with marketing materials on display, and here are a few of our favorites...

See What Christian Grey Looks Like in the '50 Shades of Grey' Movie

Posted: 18 Jun 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Love it or lust it, the Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation is being whipped into shape for a February 13, 2015 release. We've seen photos of Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey — but only from the back (not that we're complaining). A new image of Dornan, who will don a suit and tie for the role of the 27-year-old wealthy entrepreneur, has surfaced. Dornan's Grey appears a tad stalkery in the picture, but the character is kind of a creep anyway, so it works (the tampon scene: never forget!). E.L. James' best-selling novel, published in 2011, got a bit of a rough start when beginning the translation to film, particularly in the casting department. Several actors turned the role of Grey down, like Ryan Gosling, and others had scheduling conflicts (Charlie...
