Your Top Three: Summer-Camp Movies

Posted: 30 Jun 2014 08:00 PM PDT

Your Top Three is a series here at Movies.com where we choose a topic and you give us your top three picks. A lot of kids are starting summer camp this week, which should be a lot of fun. Not that I ever experienced it myself firsthand, but I have lived vicariously through all the movies made about and set at camp. I know that as long as there are no serial killers on the loose that it consists of activities like swimming and hikes and arts and farts and crafts. Fun, fun, fun. There are the classics that show us the traditional camp experiences, including Meatballs, Little Darlings, Meatballs II, The Parent Trap, Meatballs 4, Ernest Goes to Camp and Lolita, as well as the horror flicks Friday the 13th and its sequels, and Sleepaway Camp and its sequels. There's also...

Why 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' Is the Best Sequel Since 'The Dark Knight'

Posted: 30 Jun 2014 06:00 PM PDT

This past weekend the Alamo Drafthouse and Badass Digest held a special screening of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes with a Q&A after featuring Gary Oldman, Andy Serkis and director Matt Reeves. Seeing this incredible film and then hearing the Q&A, one thing became crystal clear: Matt Reeves saved this movie from being like every other sequel. At several points Reeves mentions his initial contact with the studio and how the movie they presented to him wasn't exactly the movie he was interested in making. It didn't focus on the apes in the right ways, and it needed to tone down how much they had advanced since the last film. So the studio let him bring on a new writer to work with (Mark Bomback) and make the movie his way, so long as he could still get it done...

Movies That Are Way Better Than Real Summer Camp

Posted: 30 Jun 2014 05:00 PM PDT

For most kids, summer camp begins this week. I wasn’t a fan of real summer camp and it might be because what these movie characters were up to in the summertime looked like much more fun than that.   The Sandlot Had Smalls, Benny and co. played baseball at a proper summer camp they would have had an endless supply of equipment and baseballs - and likely wouldn’t have been contending with the Beast for that matter - but the resulting hijinks are what make the summer such an unforgettable season. So what if they had to forfeit a Babe Ruth-signed baseball worth thousands of dollars? (Well, that, a pot, a vacuum cleaner and an Erector Set.) Smalls even says it himself; “… every summer was great, but none of them ever came close to that first...

'Sharknado 2' Preview: Watch a Shark Attack a NYC Subway Car

Posted: 30 Jun 2014 03:31 PM PDT

There's something very Friday the 13th: Jason Takes Manhattan about this first clip from Sharknado 2: The Second One, and it may have to do with its inclusion of a campy, over-the-top action scene set in Manhattan's underground subway system. Remember this shot?   Anyway, Sharknado's surprising success has of course inspired a sequel, this time set in New York City during another crazy shark attack. In this three-minute scene, star Ian Ziering reprises his role from the first movie and does his best to rescue a bunch of bewildered Manhattanites when sharks pummel their way through the city's underground tunnels and into one of its subway cars. Funny thing is, if you're familiar with riding New York's subways, this probably isn't the worst...

Watch This Fascinating Documentary on the Lost Films of Stanley Kubrick

Posted: 30 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT

The great Stanley Kubrick’s work has seen a renaissance in recent years, with the major retrospective at LACMA and more. We could write volumes about our appreciation for Kubrick’s body of work, but one thing that often gets discussed when it comes to the meticulous filmmaker is his unfinished projects. It’s crushing to realize the films Kubrick might have finished in his lifetime had he survived. In his 45-year career, Kubrick made only a dozen films due to his perfectionism and knack for obsessive detail, but the director had at least five feature films in various states of progress and a number of unreleased screenplays. Those works are touched upon in the 20-minute documentary Lost Kubrick: The Unfinished Films of Stanley Kubrick...

'The Skeleton Twins' Trailer: Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig Play Suicidal Siblings

When The Skeleton Twins premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival back in January, it instantly became a fan favorite. We're talking outstanding buzz, standing ovations and lots of cheering for stars Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader. The duo play estranged siblings who reunite after one of them (Hader) attempts suicide, and what follows is this really sincere dramedy about finding yourself through family. Here's the first trailer...   The Skeleton Twins boasts one of the best musical moments in any film hitting theaters this year, set to the tune of Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now." First Look: Henry Cavill As Clark Kent on the Set of 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'

Posted: 30 Jun 2014 11:00 AM PDT

We've seen the Batmobile and we've seen Batman himself (Ben Affleck), but now it's time for the Man of Steel to make an appearance. After all, there are two heroes in the title Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and while this first look at Henry Cavill on the set of 2016's most anticipated superhero movie does not reveal Superman, it does give us a tease of Cavill in costume as his alter ego, Clark Kent. The image comes courtesy of The Royal Marine Charitable Trust Fund, a U.K. organization that assists serving retired marines and their families. In it, Cavill is sporting what appears to be his "work clothes," complete with slacks, a tie and... no glasses. We assume glasses will accompany Clark Kent's full getup in the film because how else...

Cool Concept Art Reveals What the Dinobots Almost Looked Like in 'Transformers: Age of Extinction'

Posted: 30 Jun 2014 10:09 AM PDT

Transformers: Age of Extinction may have gotten body-slammed by film critics, but that didn’t stop it from earning $100 million at the U.S. box office over the weekend. Michael Bay’s fourth “giant-f***ing-robot" movie promised more robot action and upped the stakes by adding robot dinosaurs. That was apparently more than enough to appease fans of the franchise. Those Dinobots certainly increased the film’s wow factor in the trailers – and today we’re bringing you some really cool concept art that shows off what these metallic beasts looked like during the design phase. Artist Wesley Burt has released a huge batch of art related to the film, which will surely appeal to anyone who loves the Transformers film franchise. Comic Book...

Movie News: Bloody 'Jurassic World' Photo; 'Tammy' Pie Trucks Rolling; Romantic 'Eleanor Rigby' Trailer

Posted: 30 Jun 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Jurassic World: There will be blood, evidently, in Jurrassic World, the next installment of the dinosaur series that's due in theaters next year. Director Colin Treverrow shared a photo from the film that features a bloody handprint, a good indication that things will go very, very wrong, which we would expect anytime a dinosaur gets too close to a human. The movie opens on June 12, 2015. [Twitter via Collider]   Tammy: In celebration of the release of Melissa McCarthy's new comedy Tammy, in theaters on July 2, pie trucks rolled through Los Angeles, New York and Toronto over the weekend, offering free pies. McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone posed in front of one of the trucks; the couple wrote the script together, and Falcone directed. [Warner Bros...
