Your Top Three: Michael Bay Movies Posted: 25 Jun 2014 08:00 PM PDT Your Top Three is a series here at Movies.com where we choose a topic and you give us your top three picks. It used to be that the only acceptable Michael Bay movies to champion were The Rock and Armageddon, both of which did receive Criterion Collection releases, after all (never mind the reasons). Then he made Pain and Gain, which was celebrated by a good amount of smart critics last year. I'm not one of those (who celebrate it; I do consider myself to be smart), having turned it off halfway out of boredom. But I'm glad that it surprised a lot of people. To date, even with some early reviews of Transformers: Age of Extinction, Bay only has one movie with a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes -- that'd be The Rock. And that includes the movies he's produced... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Comics on Film: 25 Years Ago, Tim Burton's 'Batman' Changed Superhero Movies Forever Posted: 25 Jun 2014 07:00 PM PDT Early in the year 1989, the comic book blockbuster didn't really exist yet. While 1978's Superman was an extraordinarily successful film that launched the modern comic book movie, its success could be considered relatively modest in the grand scheme of the superhero genre. By the summer of '89, that was about to change, because a character that most people had written off as campy, comedic, and dubious in the wake of a highly popular 1960s television series was about to be reinvented in a stylish, serious and resonant way. Superman may have given us the first modern comic book film, but it was 1989's Batman that evolved the genre into more than just a blockbuster film: as anyone that was around in the summer of '89 will tell... A Brief Guide to the Transformers' Dinobots Posted: 25 Jun 2014 06:00 PM PDT Even if you don't like Michael Bay's Transformers movies, we all agree that robot dinosaurs are cool, right? Luckily for us, Transformers: Age of Extinction offers exactly that. Optimus Prime even gets to ride one. But who are these Dinobots? What are they like? Do they have favorite bands or restaurants? We may not be able to answer all these questions, but we can definitely help you out with the first one. The Originals Grimlock Grimlock is the Dinobot head honcho. He's not very nice. He's also not very smart (or he might just be faking it). More than anything, he can turn into a T. rex, which is a lot more than most of us can say. If you only know one Dinobot by name, chances are it's this guy. Slag Slag can turn... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 25 Jun 2014 05:00 PM PDT Chris Evans plays a man with a tortured past who must lead a gang of underdogs on their quest through a harrowing vision of the future aboard a train that circles the frozen, postapocalyptic wasteland that has become Earth. That sounds like the plot of a $150-million studio movie, and it is opening in select cities this Friday against Transformers 4, but we're not talking about a major Hollywood movie. We're talking about Snowpiercer, the first English-language movie from famed Korean director Bong Joon-ho (Memories of Murder, The Host). It may star Captain America, but this is the kind of small-scale, high-concept sci-fi movie that Hollywood doesn't really make anymore. If it did, it would no doubt feature a mandatory romance plot for Chris Evans, and probably some... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Who Wants to Own a Giant 7-Foot Copy of the Creepy Painting from 'Ghostbusters II'? Posted: 25 Jun 2014 04:00 PM PDT While no one in their right mind will ever argue that Ghostbusters II is as awesome as the original film, I think we can all agree that the giant Vigo the Carpathian mural on display early in the feature is pretty amazing in a totally campy way. If you’ve ever wanted your very own version of that artistic masterpiece, then today is your lucky day. Etsy artist David Vyskocil has been crafting his own gigantic 4'x7' versions of the print that are guaranteed to be a major component of your living room – if you can convince your significant other to let you hang it. Our advice? Go The Big Lebowski route and mention how it “really ties the room together." Badass Digest recently got in touch with Vyskocil and the creator gave them the skinny on these... See a 'Gremlins' Reunion, Plus: The 'E.T.' Cameo You've Never Spotted on the Movie's Classic Poster Posted: 25 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT From left to right: Chris Walas (Gremlins creator), Dick Miller (Murray Futterman), Joe Dante (director), Zach Galligan (Billy Peltzer) and Rick Baker (special effects supervisor: Gremlins 2: The New Batch). This month marks the 30th anniversary for many fine films that came out of 1984, but Gremlins is one of our personal favorites. One of the earlier horror-comedy progenitors, the Joe Dante-directed and Steven Spielberg-produced film pushed boundaries with the MPAA (which created the PG-13 rating as a result of the movie’s more violent scenes), fusing pop culture, monster-movie tropes and sly social commentary. Empire hosted a Gremlins reunion celebrating the movie’s 30th, bringing together Dante, stars Zach Galligan and Dick Miller, special... 'Mad Max: Fury Road' First Look: Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron Are Ready to Battle Posted: 25 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT Boom! Up until this point, all we've seen of Mad Max: Fury Road were scattered still images of Tom Hardy as Mad Max, most of which were in black and white and looked weathered. But that kinda fits the motif of a Mad Max movie: raw, weathered, badass and just enough "crazy" to keep you interested for the several years this sucker has been in various stages of production. But now she's ready to reveal herself in beautiful color, as per this cover of Entertainment Weekly that shows off both Hardy and costar Charlize Theron, who plays a version of Sigourney Weaver from Alien 3. Kidding! Actually she plays a character named Imperator Furiosa, which should tell you that this Mad Max movie is definitely going to be a little wild, a little weird and... See Which 'Big Lebowski' Character May Get His Own Spin-off Movie Posted: 25 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT “Nobody f***s with the Jesus,” but Big Lebowski star John Turturro, who played the bowling ball-slurping bad boy on the lanes, is attempting to f**k with the character by filming a spin-off all about the extremely quotable Jesus. Directors Joel and Ethan Coen, who seem to have no interest in the project, have mentioned Turturro’s idea before: “John Turturro, who wants it, talks to us incessantly about doing a sequel about his (bowler) character Jesus. He even has the story worked out, which he’s pitched to us a few times, but I can’t really remember it... No, I don’t see it in our future.” While at the Taormina Film Festival this past weekend, Turturro confirmed that if all goes his way, he’d be shooting the Jesus... Watch Steven Spielberg Talk Openly About His Dyslexia and How It Helped Inspire 'The Goonies' Posted: 25 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT Steven Spielberg is a billionaire, a box office hit maker, and a multi-award winner, but those achievements didn’t come easy. He struggled throughout his childhood with his religion (Orthodox Judaism), having faced anti-Semitic prejudice and bullying from schoolmates and neighbors. In 2007, the director was diagnosed with dyslexia, which he didn’t disclose until five years later in an interview. “I never felt like a victim. Movies really helped me... kind of saved me from shame, from guilt. Making movies was my great escape,” he said in an interview with the Friends of Quinn website. “When I felt like an outsider, movies made me feel inside my own skill set.” In this video interview, Spielberg discusses how he overcame dyslexia, his... 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part I' Teaser: President Snow Has Something to Show You Posted: 25 Jun 2014 11:00 AM PDT With five months to go before The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 1 hits theaters, this first teaser wisely avoids showing us the heroes of the two-part Hunger Games finale by instead revealing these enticing little promos detailing the Capitol's response to the shocking authoritative stand Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) took against them at the end of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Watch as President Snow (Donald Sutherland) calmly addresses the citizens of Panem in a soft, peaceful voice, donned in all-white attire. Seems innocent enough until the camera slowly pulls back to reveal someone alongside him. The teaser follows the release of some strikingly dour posters featuring the various "heroes" of Panem, and what it's beginning to add up to is a sort of...
