DVD Obscura: The Indie and International Movies You Should Watch This Month

Posted: 09 Jun 2014 08:00 PM PDT

New Indie: It racked up lots of buzz on the film festival circuit, and now Cheap Thrills (Drafthouse Films) makes it to DVD for those who missed its theatrical run earlier this year. This exceedingly dark comedy follows two old pals (played by Pat Healy and Ethan Embry) who find themselves pushed by economic circumstances into accepting increasingly dangerous and degrading bets and dares from an eccentric rich couple (David Koechner and Sara Paxton) over the course of one unforgettable night. In one sense, the film is a close cousin to that episode of “Roald Dahl’s Tales of the Unexpected” that inspired the Quentin Tarantino segment of Four Rooms, but Cheap Thrills definitely has chutzpah, constantly upping its own sleazy ante and leaving us wondering if...

Marvel Studios Countdown: True or False with 'Dr. Strange' and 'Ant-Man'

Posted: 09 Jun 2014 07:00 PM PDT

It’s funny that the two Marvel heroes making the news are characters who don’t even have their own comic books at the moment. There’s been a lot of chatter about Ant-Man since Edgar Wright walked away from the project, with Marvel finally landing Peyton Reed (Bring It On) as director. But while that hunt was still on, Marvel announced director Scott Derrickson (Sinister) for Doctor Strange. On top of that, there’s the usual rumors and exclamations and fan wringing of hands, but we’re here to help you make sense of it all with a rundown of what’s true and what’s false.   Dr. Strange, an Englishman himself, would be best played by Tom Hardy or Benedict Cumberbatch. FALSE! While I have no doubt that either of the rumored actors...

Film Face-off: 'Edge of Tomorrow' vs. 'Groundhog Day'

Posted: 09 Jun 2014 06:00 PM PDT

Edge of Tomorrow is kind of like Groundhog Day. You know this because you've seen the trailer, or someone described the concept. While I do try to avoid everything about a film before I see it, I knew this much. And since Edge of Tomorrow is kind of like Groundhog Day, so that means it is this week's Film Face-off. Now, if you just thought, "You can't compare these two films, that's like comparing apples to a different kind of fruit that isn't apples." To you I say, "pish" and "posh." It's Edge of Tomorrow vs. Groundhog Day.   Leading Man Edge of Tomorrow Tom Cruise plays Cage. He's an untrained officer caught in a time loop in a war with an alien race...

'X2: X-Men United' Originally Had Sentinels and Here's What They Looked Like

Posted: 09 Jun 2014 05:00 PM PDT

The biggest disappointment (aside from X3) in the entirety of the X-Men movie series up until this summer has been the lack of Sentinels. These giant, mutant-hunting robots have been fan favorites in the comics, but no one ever bothered putting them in a movie until Days of Future Past. Yes, after nearly a decade and a half of waiting, we finally got Sentinels on the big screen. It was glorious. However, Days isn’t the first time Fox flirted with bringing the beastly bots into the franchise. An early draft of X2: X-Men United featured the characters, and concept art was commissioned before the whole idea was scrapped. Artists Ricardo Delgado and Guy Hendrix Dyas turned in their visions of the terrifying robots – and the reaction was at least a little underwhelming...

Your Favorite Thing Today: Watch 50 Cent Star in 'Malefiftycent'

Posted: 09 Jun 2014 04:00 PM PDT

It's been 11 years since 50 Cent's album Get Rich or Die Tryin' appeared on the scene. The rapper turned actor is back — and this time he's ready to "Get Witch or Die Tryin'." The artist appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live where a trailer for Malefiftycent was screened — a parody on Angelina Jolie's Maleficent, currently in theaters. It's short and sweet and we can't stop laughing when Fiddy growls his lines. Plus, just seeing him wearing those horns is entertainment enough. The rapper has a new album out called Animal Ambition, but we're kind of lamenting the fact that he didn't make Malefiftycent a reality instead. Enjoy!       MORE FROM...

Exclusive: This 'The Signal' Motion Poster and Video Will Toy with Your Brain

Posted: 09 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT

So far The Signal has had one of the more cryptic movie marketing campaigns we've seen in a while. The sci-fi thriller premiered at Sundance earlier this year, where it was met with a lot of positivity, and since then Focus Features has been playing things close to the chest with a trailer and poster campaign designed to mess with your brain. And now we get to play our part in all of this creepy agitation by premiering a new teaser and a motion poster for the film. As for what all this repeating imagery means, here's the official synopsis: Nic (Brenton Thwaites of The Giver and Maleficent), Haley (Olivia Cooke of Bates Motel), and Jonah (Beau Knapp of Super 8) are three college students pondering the future. Haley is relocating for a year, and her devoted boyfriend...

Watch a Rare 'Harry Potter' Audition with Its Three Adorable Child Stars

Posted: 09 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT

We reached the end of one of cinema's most popular film franchises in 2011, but the Harry Potter universe lives on in J.K. Rowling's ongoing related series (see: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them). When plotting the first film in the canon, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the author sought British actors in order to remain faithful to the novels. During auditions, children were given scripts to read and scenes to improvise. After fielding thousands of children, the main roles went to a group of young unknowns: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. While the boys were accepted almost immediately into the project, Watson had to endure over five interviews before she actually got the part. She did, however, impress agents with her...

Reel TV: 'The Strain' Brings Guillermo del Toro to the Small Screen with Blood and Style

Posted: 09 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT

With The Walking Dead smashing rating records and Hannibal redefining what you're allowed to show on network television, the stage is well set for The Strain, which premiered at the ATX Television Festival ahead of its official July air date on FX. Based on a trilogy of novels written by Pacific Rim and Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro and novelist Chuck Hogan, the 90-minute series pilot feels more like the first half of a blockbuster horror fantasy film than the first episode of a cable TV series. Like The Walking Dead, it's gleefully violent. Like Hannibal, it's deeply in love with the monsters at the center of its narrative. Like any del Toro film, it's deeply weird, a little silly and totally engrossing. In short, The Strain feels like the...

Get a Much Closer Look at the Aliens from 'Edge of Tomorrow'

Posted: 09 Jun 2014 11:00 AM PDT

In Edge of Tomorrow, the invading aliens are called "Mimics" and they're pretty lethal. They're quick, sharp and spiderlike, not to mention their ability to see the enemy's next move before they make it. With the film now in theaters, conceptual illustrator Kev Jenkins (Thor: The Dark World) put a bunch of his concept art online, and while these differ slightly from what's in the final movie, these wicked pieces are art give you a much better look at the aliens, including some alternate versions of scenes not in the film, as well as a poster that utilizes its original title, All You Need Is Kill. Check it out below and click images to enlarge. [via CBM...
