There's Still Hope for 'The Mighty Ducks 4'

Posted:

mighty ducks 4Children of the '90s, rejoice: There's still hope for "The Mighty Ducks 4."

Well, sort of. Cast and crew from the kiddie classic series pumped some tentative hope into the chances for another installment while discussing the original trilogy with Time, noting that there was a concrete idea in place for a follow-up, and that some of them would definitely be on board for another skate around the ice.

Producer Jordan Kerner had the most solid vision for what such a film would entail, telling Time that he already had an elaborate story and concept in mind for a potential, darker "D4" that focused on the Ducks as adults, based on a play called "The Championship Season." It was set to feature Martin Sheen playing Gordon Bombay as an old man, and his death brings together the rest of the Ducks (Goldberg would have been played by Jim Belushi, according to Kerner), who reflect on their beloved coach and relish their childhood memories.

Here's how Kerner described it:

... [I]t was going to be not unlike 'Chariots of Fire,' the sort of look back at a moment in time when their coach came back to them and did something that changed their lives forever. So you cut from the present of the kids and they would have been all of 18 or 19, so they would have become the high school seniors ... set against this thing going on in a bar or restaurant where all the present-day guys grown up talking about what this coach meant to them. And we'd see that played out against them as 18-year-olds on the ice and Emilio playing in that and his father playing in a series of scenes where he was dying and they had to say their goodbyes. So I was looking for a really literate and emotional way for all of them to come back together again as men and to say goodbye to the man who meant so much to them. But it wasn't meant to be.

That sounds a little high-concept for a series where slapstick -- and the Flying V -- reigned supreme, though according to star Joshua Jackson, the "Ducks" films still evoke nostalgia and heartstring tugging that is very much alive and well today. Jackson told Time that he was all for "D4," and revealed that he'd like to be involved if such a flick ever materialized.

"I feel like a fourth film should happen, and if there was space for any of the original kids that come back and have a role, I would be surprised that anybody didn't want to do it," Jackson said. "The next generation should have its own version. Not that we need to come back as adults, but I hope my kids grow up and play pickup hockey and I hope that they have their own movies like my generation had those movies. In that way, yeah, of course, I'd be a part of something like that."

Charlie Conway fans hoping for another glimpse of your childhood crush favorite character, keep your fingers crossed.

Steven Spielberg Eyes Bryan Cranston For LBJ Miniseries

Posted:

2014 Tony Awards - Press Room
Fresh off big wins at Sunday's Tonys ceremony, "All the Way," a play about the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson, may now be headed to television.

Deadline reports that none other than Steven Spielberg is interested in adapting the Best Play winner into a miniseries, and he wants Bryan Cranston, who snagged the Best Lead Actor in a Play statuette, to reprise his role as LBJ. According to the trade, Spielberg has seen "All the Way" several times and already has relationships with both its author, Robert Schenkkan, and Cranston, and is currently in the process of optioning the play.

"All the Way" begins with President John F. Kennedy's assassination and Johnson's assumption of power, and focuses on key early moments in his presidency, including his passage of the Civil Rights Act and his landslide reelection. Deadline notes that if the miniseries idea takes flight, another play about Johnson could also be worked into later installments, and would most likely be based on "The Kentucky Cycle," also written by Schenekkan and focusing on the latter years of LBJ's presidency.

It's still unclear which network would air the miniseries, since Spielberg has worked with HBO before, while Cranston has a relationship with AMC thanks to his longtime run on "Breaking Bad." But Deadline reports that the deal is set to happen quickly, so expect those details to be worked out soon. (Also expect the possibility of Cranston being nominated for yet another Emmy.)

The 'Leprechaun: Origins' Trailer Promises 'a Horror Icon Will Be Reborn'

Posted:

leprechaun origins trailerA reboot of campy horror flick "Leprechaun" has been in the works for a while now, and at long last, the film has a trailer.

In the first promo for "Leprechaun: Origins," a young group of friends touring the remote Irish countryside get more than they bargain for when they venture into a quaint village and are promptly terrorized by the film's titular mystical -- and in this case, murderous -- creature. While viewers don't get a clear look at the leprechaun (played by WWE star Hornswoggle), his presence certainly seems meant to appear more menacing than that of the original "Leprechaun," played by Warwick Davis.

Indeed, the trailer promises that "a horror icon will be reborn," and based on all the screaming and panicked expressions, things certainly seem darker than the leprechaun we last saw in 2000's "Leprechaun: In the Hood," which co-starred Ice-T.

This clip features an old man ominously telling the young protagonists that "there's a lot of things about our village that people don't know about; a lot of things ... we like to keep quiet." Odds are that a maniac leprechaun is one of them.

"Leprechaun: Origins" hits VOD, Digital HD, and Pay-Per-View on August 26.

A Zombie Apocalypse Survival Reality Show Is Coming to BBC

Posted:

Anyone who's ever watched "The Walking Dead" and wondered what they'd do if faced with a zombie apocalypse now has a chance to live out that scenario: The BBC is launching a reality show about surviving an (entirely fictional) undead plague.

The show, straightforwardly titled "I Survived A Zombie Apocalypse," will focus on eight people who are trapped in a mall and set upon by "zombies," a.k.a. actors playing the part of the creatures who crave brains. As for just how far those actors will go to simulate their undead brethren, that's unclear, though producers have noted that once a contestant is "bitten," he or she will "leave the show in a grisly style."

BBC brass said that the series will "challenge contestants' wits and decision-making and require them to use 'urban survival tactics,'" but added that "I Survived" is also very much "a tongue-in-cheek game show."

"It's nice to finally have a game show where if you get a challenge wrong, you get your arms ripped off and your brains eaten out," executive producer Andrew Brereton said in a statement.

"I think people will die to be a part of it," added BBC Three Entertainment Commissioner Ruby Kuraishe.

"I Survived A Zombie Apocalypse" doesn't have a premiere date yet, but viewers can expect plenty more terrible zombie puns from the BBC until then.

Marvel's 'Doctor Strange' Short List Includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy, and Jared Leto

Posted:

doctor strange benedict cumberbatchAfter securing a director, Marvel's latest quirky superhero flick, "Doctor Strange," is now trying to find its titular leading man, and the Hollywood rumor mill suggests that there are already three strong candidates.

First, Deadline reports that both Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy are high on Marvel's list to star as the doctor. According to the trade, Hardy is currently the frontrunner of the two, having proved his action chops in a big budget blockbuster by playing Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises." But Cumberbatch, no stranger to action thanks to his villainous turn in "Star Trek Into Darkness," is also still very much in the mix, Deadline writes, and the decision between the two men may ultimately come down to whose schedule will allow a commitment to what's sure to be an extensive, effects-heavy shoot.

Meanwhile, Badass Digest is reporting another name: Jared Leto. The recent Best Supporting Actor winner has apparently caught the eye of filmmakers, and while his current status is unclear, Marvel reportedly very much liked the idea of casting the quirky-looking Leto as the quirky Doctor.

Of those three, one or none may snag the part. After all, with all the trouble Marvel has had with securing an "Ant-Man" director, it seems that the studio's Phase Three projects are currently in a bit of limbo. And it goes without saying that Cumberbatch, Hardy, and Leto are just the rumored choices at this point, and nothing should be set in stone until Marvel issues official word on the subject itself.

Still, it's fun to speculate. And when the odd back story of the Doctor is taken into consideration -- a former neurosurgeon who becomes the Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, protecting the planet from mystical threats using magic and martial arts, among other powers -- it seems Marvel could go in literally any direction for its lead, and make it work.

We're eager to see who they've got up their sleeve for the job.

Comedy Central Renews 'Inside Amy Schumer' and More, Picks Up Two New Shows

Posted:

2014 Variety Breakthrough Of The Year Awards - Show
CC is boosting its XX: Comedy Central has renewed "Inside Amy Schumer," and greenlit two new female-centric shows.

The network announced Monday that "Schumer," the wildly popular sketch show fronted by the titular comedienne, will be back for a third season. Comedy Central also ordered new seasons of series "Review," starring Andy Daly, and animated show "TripTank."

In addition to those renewals, the network has also picked up two new shows to series, and both are fronted by women.

The first, called "Another Period," stars Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome as sisters from a wealthy Rhode Island family at the turn of the 20th century. According to the show's official synopsis, the sisters at the heart of "Period" "care only about how they look, what parties they attend and becoming famous, which is a lot harder in 1902." The pilot features celeb cameos from Michael Ian Black, Jason Ritter, Tom Lennon, Bret Gelman, and Paget Brewster; the series is co-executive produced by Jeremy Konner, one of the creators of "Drunk History," and Ben Stiller.

The other new series, "Idiotsitter," focuses on, per Entertainment Weekly, "a straitlaced woman (Charlotte Newhouse) who is tapped to babysit a ridiculously rich 'womanchild' (Jillian Bell) who is under house arrest in her father's mansion." "Idiotsitter," which was co-created by Newhouse and Bell, began life as a six-episode digital series for Comedy Central.

No premiere dates for any of the shows yet, but we'll be eagerly awaiting their debuts.

'Orange Is the New Black' Season 2: Highlights and Reactions

Posted:

Does anyone else have an "Orange Is the New Black" hangover after this weekend? We rushed home to binge on Season 2 of the long-awaited return of the Netflix series on Friday, and boy were the 13 episodes of prison drama (laughs, too!) a doozy.

If you're like us and got through the whole thing at once, let's talk about the highlights. If you're just curious and don't mind spoilers -- you can stick around too!

Here are our reactions to some of the season's standout situations. (Again, SPOILERS AHEAD):

Politics, Power, and Protection
The three Ps of Season 2? (Aside from prison, of course.) It's not as if jailhouse politics weren't a recurring idea last year, but this season the cliques got more serious and the struggles of the administration were more of a focal point. As racial divides became more prominent under Vee's reign (more on that later) and Red was no longer on top, things got more real and definitely more violent. And just like new inmate Soso said she never felt more alone in prison, we also saw the importance of having backup behind bars. We also got a closer look at Caputo's quest for respect and control, as well as Figueroa and Mendez's undoing.

The Rise and Fall of Queen Vee
The season's ultimate villain, Vee (Lorraine Toussaint), took Litchfield by storm. A drug dealer who already had rocky pasts with Red and Taystee, Vee came in looking for prison domination and was prepared to destroy anyone in her way. A master manipulator and pro at forging fake friendships and feelings, she tore apart meaningful relationships and built people up just to break them down when it was convenient. At first she seemed like a sympathetic surrogate mommy, but she was really just a killer out for blood and power. Do you think she was a good addition this season?

Spotlights on the Unexpected
Backstories abound! Although some of our favorite main characters got the flashback treatment this year (Taystee, Poussey, Crazy Eyes), so did some of the more minor roles that we hadn't spent as much time with. For example we got to see Sister Ingalls' infamous protesting past, Gloria's tragic pre-kitchen life, and Cancer-stricken Rosa's risky adventures in bank robbing. These are some of the characters I, personally, was not expecting to get insight into, so a look at their former lives was a welcome surprise. Plus, all of these ladies ended up being more integral to the plots than anticipated. What was your favorite backstory this season?

Piper Isn't a Newbie Anymore
Piper's vulnerability is no longer palpable. In fact, our little Dandelion flowered into somewhat of a weed. Her attitude this time around was much more prickly and "don't mess with me," teetering on blasé. Her scrappy enterprising was showcased through her continued effort to expose the prison's conditions, but when it came to personal issues, she was hardened and cooler. And when we were introduced to new inmate, hungry activist and rambler Soso, Chapman officially slid in as seasoned prisoner. Soso represented fresh meat naiveté throughout the 13 episodes, but revealed she was "changed" by the season's finale. Do you think this final conversation between Soso and Chapman means a-change-is-a-comin' in Season 3? Will Soso go full lockup badass?

Is Alex the Love of Piper's Life?
The messiest will they, won't they on TV continued. Vause and Chapman's relationship was strained once again when Alex went ahead and testified against her former boss, ultimately going free and leaving Piper to rot after lying on behalf of the two of them. To say things are complicated is an understatement. But through all this we could see the glimmer of unconditional devotion reflecting in Piper's eyes, especially as she dove into a pile of Alex's letters. During her lie-filled testimony she called Alex the love of her life and we don't think that particular remark constituted as perjury. And while she had her fiance stolen by her best friend, the problem with that was more the principle of the matter, not the actual finality of no longer having Larry. Piper's last move was the perfect blend of revenge / twisted rom-com grand gesture -- rat Alex out to her parole officer so she'll have her back in prison by her side. What do you think is in store for these two next season? Do you think they belong together forever?

And, Of Course, There Were Some Shocking Moments Along the Way...
Morello's stalker backstory was a heartbreaking jolt and her break-in at Christopher's was palpation inducing to a horror movie degree. Although it plays out like a cliche, the Larry / Polly love story was quite the romantic twist. Oh, and that last shot of young Rosa after she busted out in a blaze of glory nabbing "rude" Vee along the way. Wowza. What shocked you the most?

Our Hopes For Season 3
More Pennsatucky, please. A lone wolf with new fangs, Tucky became more endearing as she worked towards a friendship with Healy. Backstories for dynamic duo Maritza and Flaca. We would love to hear more of their musings on what love means to them. More Sophia! And a juicy arc for Nichols. What do you hope to see next season?

What did you think of "Orange is The New Black" Season 2 overall?

Bryan Cranston Is Halfway to the Elusive EGOT

Posted:

bryan cranston egotNewly-crowned Tony winner Bryan Cranston, who scooped up the Best Actor in a Play trophy Sunday night for his portrayal of Lyndon B. Johnson in "All the Way," may be reveling in his recent victory, but the actor now has another goal in sight: the EGOT.

By adding the Tony statuette to his awards collection -- which also includes three Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series from his days on "Breaking Bad" -- Cranston now only has to clinch two more trophies to earn the title of EGOT, a.k.a. someone who's won the entertainment industry's four most prestigious awards: an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony.

The most recent person to join the exclusive club -- which currently only has 12 members -- was composer Robert Lopez, who won his final EGOT component, the Oscar, this year for writing "Let It Go," the Best Original Song from hit animated musical "Frozen." (He shared the award with his wife and co-writer, Kristen Anderson-Lopez.) Lopez also holds the distinction of being the youngest person to earn EGOT status, and did so in the fastest time, snagging all four statuettes in only 10 years.

While Cranston probably won't beat Lopez to that last record, he could still earn the other two trophies if he puts his mind to it. Maybe he can narrate an audio book to win a Grammy? He's been in a bunch of movies recently; can he land a part in a prestigious enough film to earn recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences?

Only time will tell. But we're pulling for the onetime Walter White.

Two New Adorable Posters Debut for Disney's 'Big Hero 6' (PHOTOS)

Posted:

big hero 6 posterIf it's one thing that's abundantly clear, based on the marketing materials released so far for Disney's animated superhero romp "Big Hero 6," it's that the movie's inflatable robot Baymax is really, really, ridiculously cute.

The film, based on a cultish Marvel comic book by Steven Seagle and Duncan Rouleau, concerns Hiro Hamada, a young boy living in the futuristic metropolis of San Fransokyo, and dreams of becoming a part of a real-life superhero team. To that end, he outfits his squishy helper robot Baymax with armor so that he can also become a hero. Hilarious hijinks undoubtedly ensue.

One of the two posters just features Baymax looking out at you, and it's hard not to think about how many billions of dollars of Baymax toys and action figures Disney will undoubtedly sell. The second poster, reminiscent of the early promotional materials for Pixar's "The Incredibles," shows Hiro looking up at his inflatable robot pal and wondering how he's going to sit the last piece of armor -- meant for his stomach -- onto the giant protruding cannonball that is Baymax's tummy. Again: really, very cute.

"Big Hero 6," directed by "Winnie the Pooh's" Don Hall and co-directed by Chris Williams ("Bolt") and featuring the voices of T.J. Miller, Jamie Chung, and Maya Rudolph, will be out on November 7th, 2014.

Yaya DaCosta To Play Whitney Houston In Lifetime Biopic

Posted:

Premiere Of Screen Gems'
It's weird how Lifetime movies now have a certain knowingly campy sheen. Whether it's Lindsay Lohan playing Liz Taylor or the "Flowers in the Attic" remake, you know what you're getting when you sit down to watch a Lifetime Original film. And sometimes a "Lifetime movie" holds the same so-bad-it's-good cache as a "Syfy movie." Now the network is tackling an upcoming Whitney Houston biopic and thankfully, they found a pretty great star to anchor the project.

Yaya DaCosta, who famously made waves during cycle 3 of "America's Next Top Model," will star as the addled pop star whose songs still make us dance in our seat if they come on the radio (according to Entertainment Weekly). DaCosta is so cute that staring at her photo for too long will probably cause brain damage. So just keep that in mind.

Since taking second place in the reality modeling competition, DaCosta has made appearances on "All My Children," "Ugly Betty," and "House," and had a role in last year's overwrought historical drama "Lee Daniels' The Butler." It is unclear whether or not she will sing in the movie, or lip synch adorably.

"Whitney Houston," as the project is currently known, will be directed by Angela Bassett, which better not interfere with her involvement in the next season of "American Horror Story." (For those of you playing along, Bassett co-starred with Houston in "Waiting to Exhale.") DaCosta is the first major cast member to secure a role, although the film is supposedly centered around her tumultuous relationship with Bobby Brown, which is a juicy role for any young actor, we're sure.

The movie will air sometime in 2015. We'll be waiting.

Nicolas Cage Wore a Nicolas Cage T-Shirt to a Guns N' Roses Show (PHOTO)

Posted:

nicolas cage guns n rosesIt's always funny when you see that guy (or gal) at a show: the person who wears the band T-shirt to the band that they're seeing. It's a little redundant and goofy and unnecessarily super-fan-ish, especially since these are the people who are most likely to buy another T-shirt from that same band at the concert. But what are the rules when you're Nicolas Cage and you go to a concert wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with Nicolas Cage? Is that alright? Or what's the deal?

Guns N' Roses, who, yes, are still touring, posted a photo to their official Instagram account (via Vulture) of The One True God standing next to Andrew Dice Clay backstage at a show the band performed in Las Vegas. And the photo is more incredible than "Use Your Illusion 1" and "2" put together. First of all, Andrew Dice Clay is still sticking to his "Dice Man" look, complete with leather jacket, fingerless gloves, and trailer park sideburns, even though we all know he's a much more accomplished and mature performer now (hello, "Blue Jasmine!") It's kind of sad and kind of inspiring at the same time. But the truly amazing thing is Cage's get-up: he's wearing more beads than a topless Mardi Gras enthusiast, his pants have weird leather embellishments, he's got Liberace-levels of rings, and is carrying a walking stick, or possible magical scepter. To top it all off, he's wearing a T-shirt that features a photo of his face (it looks like it might be from "Raising Arizona"). It's almost too good.

We'll leave you now to study the photo, print out a copy, and hang it delicately in your cubicle so all of your coworkers can walk by, realize how awesome you are, and ask you to party.

Box Office: What's Behind the Surprise Success of 'The Fault in Our Stars'?

Posted:

box office fault in our starsA female-centered drama about two teens with cancer doesn't sound like your typical light, summer action fare, but "The Fault in Our Stars" still had one of the strongest openings of the year to date, earning an estimated $48.2 million this weekend.

Actually, most pundits were expecting it to do fairly well, given the popularity of both the source novel and of star Shailene Woodley. Even so, predictions were mostly in the mid-30s, at least $10 million below the film's actual performance.

What's behind the film's unexpected surge? Here are a few possibilities:

Girl Power. We saw it last week with "Maleficent." We're seeing it again this week, not just with "Fault," but also with such movies as "Belle" (the historical drama that's No. 12 this week, even though its six weeks old and is playing on just 476 screens), "The Other Woman" (still as high as No. 14 after seven weeks) and the new romantic comedy "Obvious Child" (which opened Friday and earned the weekend's top per-screen average, $27,000, compared to $15,191 for "Fault"). This season's movies that target female viewers are showing their stamina, even as the traditional male-oriented action and comedy blockbusters fizzle on entry ("Blended," "A Million Ways to Die in the West") or deflate after their first weekend ("X-Men: Days of Future Past," "Godzilla," "The Amazing Spider-Man 2").

The latest example is the new Tom Cruise vehicle, "Edge of Tomorrow," which, despite strong reviews, opened at just No. 3, with an estimated $29.1 million. That's at the low end of what was expected. Cruise's action-fests tend to do better overseas, but even this one has opened with lackluster numbers abroad. It could be that audiences are getting tired of Cruise's shtick; viewers gave it just a so-so B+ at CinemaScore. Meanwhile, "Maleficent" held up well in its second weekend, losing just 52 percent of its first-week business (a modest drop for a blockbuster) and finished second with an estimated $33.5 million. That decline was a little smaller than predicted. It seems one more sign that this summer's moviegoers would rather see what the gals have to offer than what the guys do.

Shailene Woodley. She's not quite the next J-Law yet, despite her talk-show ubiquity and her quirky personality (enough with the anecdotes about eating clay, please). But "Divergent" (which opened with $54.6 million) and now "Fault," within a few months of each other, show Woodley to be a star who can open movies to the tune of $50 million. Sure, it helped that she re-teamed with "Divergent" co-star Ansel Elgort in "Fault," and the movie had a lot of other things going for it (see below), but Woodley will get most of the credit. Certainly, it's hard to imagine another actress her age (22) with the poise to pull off this difficult tragic, romantic role.

Smart Marketing. The movie did a good job using social media to reach its intended young-adult audience and cultivate readers of John Green's bestseller. The effort culminated in a special screening Thursday night that included a simulcast Q&A session with the cast, filmmakers, and Green. In fact, the movie did so well Thursday night that it overinflated expectations, with some pundits taking back their initial projections and declaring that the movie would enjoy a $60 million debut. As it turned out, the film did most of its business on Friday, with fall-off over the rest of the weekend, but again, remember that this is a drama about teens with cancer that opened with nearly $50 million at the beginning of June. That just doesn't happen without a well-targeted marketing campaign.

Execution. Of course, all that marketing wouldn't have mattered if the movie didn't work; word-of-mouth from the disappointed fanbase would have killed it before breakfast on Friday. But viewers gave it an A at CinemaScore, so they must have felt it delivered. It didn't hurt that Green was kept in the loop during production even though he didn't write the screenplay (the guys who did, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, also wrote Woodley's acclaimed indie romance hit from last summer, "The Spectacular Now"), or that director Josh Boone avoided the missteps that could have left the film mired in sentimentality.

Timing. It also didn't hurt that the movie faced weak competition at the box office. Yeah, that's right, Tom Cruise, we're talking about you. Really, "Fault" would have been smart counter-programming just about any weekend in June, since there's precious little other female-centered fare opening this month. Last week, it might have been clobbered by "Maleficent." This week, however, "Maleficent" just looks like "Fault"'s opening act, a film meant to whet your appetite and to get you thinking about tragic romance and female empowerment. Plus, by opening this early, the film has all of June, and maybe all of summer, to keep proving that what we think we know about what comprises a summer smash is wrong.
