A Solo Batman Movie is Coming With Ben Affleck Directing

Posted: 10 Jul 2015 12:17 AM PDT

Warner Bros. big Comic-Con panel isn't until Saturday morning, but it would seem like the Internet has already scooped what would certainly have been one of their big reveals: Ben Affleck will star in, co-write, and direct a solo Batman movie. This isn't exactly coming out of left field since rumors about a new Batman movie have been swirling for a while, but now we have some finer details about who all is involved. Affleck's writing partner on the project will be Geoff Johns, one of the most important figures in DC Comics. He's not only a prolific writer in print and the Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics, but he's also currently a writer and producer on the surprisingly great DC Comics shows Arrow and The Flash. The news gets better from there, too...

See How Brief Movies Become When They're Cut to Only Lines Spoken By Minorities

Posted: 09 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT

Earlier this year, we posted the findings of a study proving audiences want more minorities in movies. Presumably, they also want these minorities to have significant roles and dialogue, enough to make today's discovery less noteworthy. We've come across a series on YouTube/Tumblr by Dylan Marron, in which he takes recent movies and isolates only the parts where a person of color speaks. It's even more upsetting than you'd think. Take Her, for example. Spike Jonze's sci-fi drama is set in a future Los Angeles shot partly in Shanghai, and yet only 35 seconds of the two-hour movie feature lines spoken by anyone who isn't white (or a computer with a white person's voice). There's a slightly prominent Asian woman in the movie, the girlfriend of Chris...

'Jaws: Live!' Promises It's Gonna Need a Bigger Stage

Posted: 09 Jul 2015 07:30 PM PDT

Movie theaters are constantly trying to come up with new tricks to make the theatrical experience special again. The screens keep getting bigger, the sound keeps getting louder, and the dimensions keep getting dimensionier (we're up to 4D!). Pretty soon theaters will have to integrate some kind of live experience as well, and when they do, we hope they take a queue from our pals behind the Old Murder House Theatre, who offer up one of the most unique celebrations of movies you're ever going to find. We've featured Old Murder House, which is the brainchild of Zero Charisma star Sam Eidson, a few times over the years thanks to their performances of Robocop Live, Aliens on Ice, and Jurassic Live, and now they're back again with another Spielberg classic: Jaws: Live...

Duncan Jones Hopes to Squeeze In His Sci-Fi 'Mute' Before 'Warcraft' Comes Out

Posted: 09 Jul 2015 06:40 PM PDT

Every director has that one white whale project that never quite seems to get off the ground. For Duncan Jones it's been the sci-fi noir Mute. He'd originally planned to make the movie about a kidnapped bartender as his next film following Moon, but then Source Code took its place. After that, Mute morphed into a graphic novel, which still hasn't come out.  In the mean time Jones directed Warcraft, which is apparently nearly completed and will spend the remaining time between now and its June 2016 release working on its extensive VFX work. And so now that he's going to have a bit of downtime while the effects wizards at Industrial Light and Magic perfect the movie, it's possible he may actually be able to film Mute. Here's what Jones told...

Update: 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' Casts a Few More Magical People

Posted: 09 Jul 2015 04:45 PM PDT

Update 7/9/15: Variety is reporting that the singer Alison Sudol will be playing Queenie, the younger sister of the previously cast Katherine Waterston. They also say that Ezra Miller ahs joined the cast in an unknown capacity and that Josh Gad and John Krasinski are both up for the same role.   Previously: The wizarding world of Harry Potter is two things: A) wonderful, and B) very, very British. Sure, the eight movies made from seven books do mention places outside of the Hogwarts homeland of Britain, and there are some characters and references from other countries thrown in the mix, but America is not one of them. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the new Harry Potter spin-off franchise written by J.K. Rowling herself, is set in America, however, and it...

Paramount Plans to Shake Up Theatrical Distribution With the Next 'Paranormal Activity'

Posted: 09 Jul 2015 03:15 PM PDT

Movie theater chains have long battled with movie studios over how long the gap should be between when a movie first hits theaters and when it first hits home video. Obviously the theaters want that gap to be as long as possible as it drives more business to their locations, whereas studios are happy to put something out on home video sooner because they can start making more money sooner.  In the past, theaters have refused to play movies where the release window between theatrical and home is too short. And it's not like it's the distant past, either. That's why all of the major theater chains are refusing to play the recently unveiled slate of Netflix movies. But now Paramount has managed to negotiate a deal with AMC, one of the biggest chains in the country...

Watch Conan O'Brien Ride the Fury Road to Comic-Con

Posted: 09 Jul 2015 01:30 PM PDT

Everyone who's anyone is heading to San Diego for Comic-Con it seems, and no wonder! It's a major pop culture event that draws folks obsessed with comics, movies, and television shows that reflect the nerdy, geeky nation in which we all now live. And even if you're not able to attend in person, there are plenty of ways you can watch, listen, and share in the event via the internet. Conan O'Brien, however, decided that he could not miss attending in person, so he accepted an invitation from his sidekick Andy Richter to drive to San Diego rather than take the train. The result was captured for posterity, as Conan tips his hat -- and his flame-throwing guiter -- to George Miller's awesome Mad Max: Fury Road, taking along his usual musical accompanists Jimmy...

Posted: 09 Jul 2015 12:00 PM PDT

Deadpool: We've seen plenty of photos of Ryan Reynolds in the forthcoming Deadpool, but what about the other characters in the undoubtedly demented superhero movie? New photos provide our first look at Ed Skrein as the villainous Ajax (above), as well as T.J. Miller and Gina Carano in an uncomfortable pose as Weasel and Angel Dust, respectively. Morena Baccarin and Brianna Hildebrand also star; the movie opens on February 12. [Collider]   Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse: Formerly known as Scouts vs. Zombies, the horror comedy Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is heading to theaters on October 30, and the first clip has been released. The movie follows three young scouts who must defend their town against an outbreak of zombies. Halston Sage, Tye...
