The 2015 Summer Blockbuster Awards: Best New Character, Funniest Moment, and More

Posted: 31 Aug 2015 10:00 PM PDT

Welcome to the 2015 Summer Blockbuster Awards, where we hand out imaginary trophies to the best, worst, craziest and most disappointing movies, characters, performers and scenes from the past four months. There are only a few rules. First, any eligible movie had to be released between May and August. Second, these awards focus on mainstream releases, because how are we supposed to compare Avengers: Age of Ultron to The Look of Silence? Third, these are 100% accurate and you are not allowed to argue with any of them. They are set in digital stone. They are law.   Best New Character Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road Charlize Theron's brave, wounded road warrior/feminist avenger slammed into pop culture with the force of a speeding War Rig this summer. Every artist...

'Concussion' Trailer: Will Smith Takes on NFL's Deadly Issue

Posted: 31 Aug 2015 09:00 PM PDT

While we anxiously wait to see Will Smith take on another superhero movie role in next summer's Suicide Squad, the actor has a more serious film coming out this Christmas about squads of professional athletes playing an apparently suicidal sport. And it could be his next chance at an Oscar. Titled Concussion, the drama focuses on the issue of head injury in the NFL, with Smith portraying real-life forensic neuropathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu, who discovered that football players were dying as a result of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (a kind of brain damage) they got from playing the game. Of course, the NFL was not happy about this discovery and has denounced Omalu's work. That makes the movie look almost like a remake of The Insider, the true drama in which...

'Pay the Ghost' Trailer: Do Not Kidnap Nicolas Cage's Kid

Posted: 31 Aug 2015 06:00 PM PDT

To many, Nicolas Cage has basically become a living, breathing meme. It's not hard to see why, either. He's got a few recent bad movies under his belt and a constant stream of weird haircuts to go with them, so any given screenshot of him can have some snarky text applied to it and cover a thousand different scenarios. But even if he does have weird hair pieces, and even if the movies he's in are duds, Nicolas Cage still manages to throw his weight into a role in ways that few other actors ever do. It's a bit of a blessing, then, that Cage's next movie actually looks more than a little decent. It's called Pay the Ghost, and it's about a man whose investigation into the abduction of his son leads him down some pretty wild avenues. There's actually...

RIP: Horror Master Wes Craven Has Passed Away

Posted: 31 Aug 2015 11:45 AM PDT

Wes Craven, the director who gave the world A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, and The Hills Have Eyes, has passed away at the age of 76 after enduring a private battle with brain cancer. While Craven is certainly best known for his blockbuster franchises, everything you need to understand why those movies worked in the first place can be seen in his very first film, 1972's The Last House on the Left. It is a truly horrifying piece of cinema, but what really makes it stand out is a sense of humor among the brutality. What made Craven a master of horror wasn't his ability to generate a scare, it was his understanding that the only way to truly process evil is to find something, anything, to laugh at. Craven consistently understood the marriage of horror and humor...
