Posted: 13 Aug 2015 11:00 PM PDT

Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:   Filmmaking Lesson of the Day: Frame by Frame shows us how to shoot a subjective drug trip sequence like the one in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas:   Vintage Image of the Day: Alfred Hitchcock, who was born on this date in 1899, is either being fed some birthday cake by Doris Day (on her birthday, supposedly) or is in danger of being stabbed with a cake-covered knife. James Stewart looks on, as this is during the making of The Man Who Knew Too Much.   Scene Analysis of the Day: CineFix looks at the already iconic hallway fight scene from Christopher Nolan's Inception and the practical effects used to make it...

A Few Details of the Young Han Solo Movie Emerge, Plus: More Evidence for a Boba Fett Movie

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 09:22 PM PDT

Entertainment Weekly is continuing their unveiling of key Star Wars info ahead of this weekend's Disney expo, and this time they're all about the young Han Solo movie that'll be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. But perhaps even more interesting is the overlap between EW's chat with Lucasfilm honcho Kathleen Kennedy and The Verge's big piece on the technology Lucasfilm is creating concurrent with the new movies. First, the Han Solo news we know for sure, and then what the new tech Lucasfilm is developing may mean for the rumored Boba Fett movie.   No one is even close to being cast as Han Solo This part is pretty cut and dry: They haven't cast anyone and "aren't even close in that department." So you can keep...

Watch: Ethan Hawke Gets at the Emotional Heart of 'Good Kill' in This Behind-The-Scenes Clip

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 06:00 PM PDT

Writer-director Andrew Niccol has always had a knack for creating stories that are looking ahead of the curve at the intersection of technology and psychology. With The Truman Show he broke down a culture obsessed with reality TV before reality TV was even in full bloom. With Gattaca he forecasted a future obsessed with micromanaging individuals to a DNA level. With Lord of War he wryly cracked open the mind of a willful cog in our war-enabling society. And now with Good Kill, Niccol is exploring the psychological effects of drone warfare on the people who actually pilot the drones. The tense drama, starring Ethan Hawke as a drone pilot who lives far away from the destruction he's causing, hits Digital HD this week (and DVD/Blu-ray on September 1, 2015) and we've got an...

Watch: 'Inside Out' Gets a Mini Sequel With 'Riley's First Date'

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 04:30 PM PDT

Pixar sure does love its sequels these days. Cars 2, Monsters University, Finding Dory, Toy Story 1-4 (yes, there's a fourth in the works), and now...Inside Out 2? Kind of. Riley's First Date is a short film that takes place one year after the movie and will be making its debut as an extra on the home video release of Inside Out. The title is pretty self explanatory so you should have a good idea of what's in store, but Yahoo has a clip that showcases the running thoughts of Riley and her family when a boy shows up at her door. It's cute and simple and honestly probably about as extensive of a "sequel" as we'd like to see to Inside Out right now. What makes the movie so brilliant is how it breaks down a pivotal moment in a young person's...

Update: 'Kindergarten Cop 2' Is Already Filming With Dolph Lundgren Replacing Schwarzenegger

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 03:00 PM PDT

Update 8/13/15: The new Kindergarten Cop is apparently already filming in Vancouver, with Dolph Lundgren stepping in to the oversized shoes once filled by Arnold Schwazenegger. We don't actually know if he's playing Detective John Kimble or a different cop, but we do know that he has to infilitrate a kindergarten class to find a kid who is in the federal witness protection program. And not only that, but he's going to have an Indian sidekick named Sanjit this time around, which sounds amazingly antiquated in a '90s Saturday morning cartoon kind of way.   Previously 6/15/15: A remake of the 1990 comedy Kindergarten Cop is on its way, but Arnold Schwarzenegger will not be starring in the new version. The original followed on the heels of Twins, which...

David Oyelowo Will Be the First Black James Bond...Kind Of

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 01:30 PM PDT

David Oyelowo, acclaimed for his stirring performance as Dr. Martin Luther King in last year's Selma, will be the first black actor to portray James Bond. He has accepted an invitation from the estate of writer Ian Fleming, the creator of the British secret agent, to voice Bond and other characters in an audiobook recording of Trigger Mortis, a new novel by Anthony Horowitz. According to an interview with The Guardian, Oyelowo dealt with "very real resistance" more than 10 years ago when he played Henry VI in a stage production for the Royal Shakespeare Company, "which made him the first black actor to play an English king in a major Shakespeare production." He received a flood of hate mail in protest; he notes: "You’d hope that wouldn’t...
