'Unauthorized Full House Story' Star Justin Gaston Wants to Do John Stamos Justice

Posted:

Jon Cryer Hosts Unveiling Of Warner Bros. Studio Expansion You may know actor, singer, and model Justin Gaston from his role as Ben Rogers on "Days of Our Lives" or as a contestant on Season 6 of "Nashville Star." Now the 27-year-old Louisiana native (and former Taylor Swift music video love interest) is taking on a whole new kind of role -- he'll be portraying John Stamos in Lifetime's "The Unauthorized Full House Story," which airs August 22.

What's it like to step into the iconic Uncle Jesse's leather boots? Gaston chatted with us about the pressures of playing such a beloved character, how he prepared for the role, Netflix's upcoming "Fuller House," and why he thinks the original cast should tune into the film, which he calls a "love letter" to "Full House."

Moviefone: What was this audition process like? John Stamos is such an iconic TV figure to play.

Justin Gaston: I know! I remember being in a car or something with my wife and she read in The Hollywood Reporter or something that Lifetime was putting out this movie and she was like "You would be perfect for John Stamos!" And then I got an audition for it and then I kind of forgot about it. Then I went in -- I think pretty late in the process -- just for casting, and within a few days I was flying to Vancouver. It was pretty quick!

You're sort of right in the age group of someone who would watch "Full House" at a younger age. Were you a fan of the show growing up?

Yeah, I was a big fan. I still enjoy watching it since it comes up all the time.

How did you prepare to play John? Did you watch a ton of old episodes? The first clip shows that you have those mannerisms down a bit.

Even when I got to the audition I started trying to watch as many episodes as I could. Throughout the entire process of filming before I would go to bed I would try to watch a couple episodes. I tried to watch as many interviews of John Stamos from when he was younger. I watched some of him as Blackie Parrish [his "General Hospital" character], I tried to YouTube that to see him in that role.

Without giving too much away, what are some of the most interesting tidbits you learned about him or "Full House" throughout this project? Anything that really surprised you?

I think everybody knows a lot about him in general. But I didn't realize some of the women he had dated. There were a lot. I also didn't realize he was on "General Hospital" until I did some research and I didn't realize he had two other shows before he landed "Full House."

Was there any other personal character backstory that surprised you, considering the cast was relatively different than the characters they portrayed on "Full House"?

I wasn't really that shocked. I feel like most people have seen Bob Saget's standup so you know what he's about, he's kind of that character. From what I understand from a lot of the interviews I've watched, Dave Coulier seems to be a really good guy and I think he really enjoys the show and still loves it. Most of them are doing "Fuller House" now and it seems like they're still all friends. From what I understand it seems like a pretty good environment.

What about achieving Jesse's look? Tell us about getting that famous hair.

That was a lot of fun. I went to the fitting and it's just that late '80s and early '90s really bright colors. There's that vest, and the tank tops that Uncle Jesse wore. My hair was really short at the time so we used a wig, but it was a lot of fun.

What was the most challenging thing about playing John Stamos?

I think he's just so beloved by so many people, myself as well. I grew up with him as Uncle Jesse. You wanna do him and the character justice and you want people to enjoy it.

Did you find that you had any similarities with him or do you think you're pretty different performers?

We're both musicians and my first instrument was the drums. I think there's a lot of similarities. He sings, I play guitar. We have a lot in common.

Jesse and the Rippers is a big part of his "Full House" identity. Did you get to sing at all?

Yeah, I didn't actually do the singing. But you'll get a little Jesse and The Rippers action. Wouldn't be "Full House" without it.

Did you have a chance to sing "Forever"?

No... We didn't get to do that one. And that's like the best one!

Have you ever gotten a chance to meet John Stamos?

I did meet him. It was a long time ago and it was pretty brief. I talked to him for about 10 minutes or so at the Gibson Showroom here in LA.

If you had a message for the original cast, what would you say to them about this movie and why they should tune in?

I'd like to say that it's sort of a love letter to the show and to them and to the characters. I hope that they enjoy it and see it as that.

Do you have a favorite "Full House" episode?

I don't know... I think my favorite part of the show is Uncle Jesse -- well, John Stamos and Dave Coulier's back and forth. That's my favorite dynamic on the show. Let me think... I like the chicken pox episode a lot.

Are you going to watch "Fuller House" now that you're a part of this whole thing?

Yeah, but I would have watched it anyway. I will probably watch it in a different light having done this role. And I'm excited to see "Grandfathered" as well.

How do you think diehard "Full House" fans will respond to this movie?

I was a big fan of "Saved By the Bell" so I was excited when they did that one ["The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story"] and I wasn't involved in it at all. I hope people have a similar outlook. All it is is kind of reliving that great story and those really great characters.

Original Batgirl, Yvonne Craig, Dead at 78

Posted:

Yvonne CraigYvonne Craig, who played Batgirl in the 1960s "Batman" series, died this week after a two-year battle with breast cancer at the age of 78.

If you trace the line of butt-kicking women in movies and TV all the way back, you'll find Craig right there at the beginning. She originated the role of Batgirl in the third and final season of "Batman" in 1967, ka-powing bad guys next to Adam West and Burt Ward. As a trained dancer, she even did her own stunts.

Before her acting career, Craig danced with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. She segued into acting, and appeared in television and movies - including two with Elvis Presley, "It Happened at the World's Fair" and "Kissin' Cousins." Along with her turn as Batgirl, Craig memorably danced as a green-skinned slave girl for Captain Kirk on "Star Trek."

Craig leaves behind her husband, Kenneth Aldrich, and sister, Meridel Carson.

Anne Hathaway Is Going to TV, Like All the Cool Kids

Posted:

Matthew McConaughey did it. So did Halle Berry and Adrien Brody. Now it's Anne Hathaway's turn to do what all the cool kids in Hollywood are doing - going on TV. (Maybe McConaughey persuaded her of the small screen's merits when they made "Interstellar.")

The Wrap reports that the Oscar winner will star in and produce a limited series adaptation of "The Ambassador's Wife," a novel by Jennifer Steil. The project currently is not attached to any network.

The novel is inspired by Steil's real-life experiences as the wife of the former British ambassador to Yemen, Timothy Torlot. In 2010, Torlot was the target of a suicide bomber, and Steil and their daughter were whisked to Jordan for their safety. In "The Ambassador's Wife," the main character, Miranda, is kidnapped, and she and her husband face difficult obstacles to reuniting.

It sounds like a prestige project much in the mold of "The Honourable Woman," which netted Maggie Gyllenhaal quite a bit of acclaim, as well as a Golden Globe.

Hathaway will next be seen in the movie "The Intern" opposite Robert De Niro, in theaters Sept. 25.

56 Times Chandler Bing Was the Best Part of 'Friends'

Posted:

Could Chandler Bing be any more sarcastic? No he couldn't, and that's why we love him.

No "Friends" character is full of more wit, sass, and perfect line deliveries ("I'm hopeless and awkward and desperate for love!") than Chandler, played skillfully by the one and only Matthew Perry. From his bromance with Joey to his unwavering love for Monica, Mrs. Chanandler Bong isn't just a funnyman armed with comebacks, he has heart, too. But that's not what we're here to celebrate. Oh no.

We're here to honor the many, many times Chandler Bing made the world crack the hell up. So, without further ado, we present Chandler's best quotes, moments, and Monica-insanity enduring adventures.chandler bing friends quotes

Director Cary Fukunaga Opens Up on 'It' Split

Posted:

It came as a shock when director Cary Fukunaga left the "It" movie just weeks before the start of production. For once, the obvious answer -- that he stood too close to a sewer one day and Pennywise took him out -- is not what happened. The "True Detective" Season 1 director just talked to Entertainment Weekly about his (reluctant) departure from the two-part Stephen King adaptation.

"It's never easy," Cary told EW. "Chase [Palmer] and I had been working on that script for probably three years. There was a lot of our childhood and our experience in it." So why did he go? "Ultimately, we and New Line have to agree on the kind of movie we want to make, and we just wanted to make different movies," Cary said. "It's like a relationship: you can try to make the other person who you want them to be, but it's impossible really to change. You just have to work."

That still doesn't explain specifics, but since he's not with the project anymore, he probably wants to remain respectful and discreet (and not complain about money, schedules, etc.). It's never a good idea to burn bridges unless you have to! Andy Muschietti of "Mama" is said to be taking over as director, and EW said he's reportedly keeping the two-part format and hiring a new writer to rework the script. "It" was supposed to start shooting in late June, so they still need a new start date. Will they need a new Pennywise or does Will Poulter still have the gig? That is not clear either, but at least "It" is still happening.

16 Reasons Uncle Jesse From 'Full House' Was the Man of Our '90s Dreams

Uncle Jesse 4 eva, man. If you watched "Full House" back in the day and had a pulse and a thing for bad boys with semi-mullets, chances are you swooned for the iconic John Stamos character. You probably still do. That hair, those leather jackets, that singer/exterminator/adman/radio host/rockstar (in Japan)/nightclub-owner charm... (He did a lot of stuff, you guys).

Whether he was crooning to his beloved Becky, being super cute with Michelle, or shaking it with The Rippers, we couldn't resist his glorious ways. Here are 16 reasons why Uncle Jesse will always be the man of our '90s dreams. Have mercy, indeed.uncle jesse

Watch the 'Friends' Airport Scene That Was Deleted After 9/11

Posted:

It was too soon for this "Friends" scene back in 2001. And apparently it was still too soon back in 2007, when a YouTube video of the deleted scene was posted. It took until 2015 for the four-minute clip to truly go viral, showing what NBC cut from an episode that was meant to air shortly after the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

As the video notes, at the start:

The following scenes were deleted from the episode 'The One Where Rachel Tells Ross' and are being presented here for the first time. The story involved Chandler joking with security at an airport and was to air two weeks after the events of September 11, 2001. In light of this, we decided to replace the original story. As part of the history of the show, we hope that the scenes can now be viewed in the spirit they were originally intended."

The scene shows newlyweds Monica (Courteney Cox) and Chandler (Matthew Perry) at the airport. Chandler gets himself detained after noticing a TSA sign that warns people *not* to joke about airport hijackings and bombings ... and of course he makes a joke. Could he BE any more foolish?

It was a good call to remove the scene, considering the horrible timing, but now we're nostalgic for all things "Friends" so we're glad it's available online:

Stars, they're just like us: they don't want to pass up a buck, either.

While a few of these celebs have unmistakable voices they've used in ads that have no doubt stuck to your brain like glue, some celebs have lent their lungs to brands you may not expect. First Trailer for 'The Witch' Is Here: Let the Horror Buzz Begin!

Posted:

If "The Crucible" and "The Village" had an evil, terrifying, but critically-adored baby ... it might look something like "The Witch."

And then that baby might get stolen by a witch, as teased in the horror film's unsettling first trailer.

"The Witch," the feature film debut of writer-director Robert Eggers, was a smash at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize and won the Directing Award. It promises to be a hit with the horror set when it arrives in 2016, although we'll have to wait for a more specific release date.

"The Witch" follows a 1630s colonial New England family who are forced to leave their town due to the parents' devout religious beliefs. They create a new home on the edge of a wood, but when their newborn son goes missing, religious hysteria takes over, and the family members turn on each other as they unravel.

As Entertainment Weekly noted, director Robert Eggers previously worked as a production designer, costume designer and art director, and you can see the influences in the stunning visuals of the trailer:

Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green Split After 11 Years Together: Report

Posted:

Germany Ninja Trutles PremiereTwo more Hollywood stars are said to be consciously uncoupling. Sigh. "Transformers" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" actress Megan Fox, 29, and "Beverly Hills, 90210" alum Brian Austin Green, 42, have split up, Us Weekly reports. An insider told them, "Megan has separated from Brian. They decided on it six months ago."

Believe it or not, they've been together for 11 years, even if they were only married for five of them. That's still pretty impressive for a Hollywood couple. Brian was a guest star on Megan's sitcom "Hope & Faith" when she was just 18. "I liked him right away," Megan told New York Times Magazine in 2010, describing how she met Brian on set. "Everyone was around the monitor watching a scene, and Brian accidentally touched my leg. I remember literal electricity shooting through me and out me from every direction. It was like magic."

They initially got engaged two years after they first met, when she was 20, but called it off, only to get re-engaged later. They finally got hitched in June 2010 during a holiday in Hawaii. Megan and Brian have two children together -- sons Noah, 2, and Bodhi, 18 months -- and Brian has a 13-year-old son from a previous relationship.

Us Weekly said their reps couldn't be reached for comment on the reported separation. Best of luck to the stars as they co-parent their sons and do whatever they do next in their individual lives. And who knows, maybe they'll reconcile before one of them files for divorce.

Will Smith and Margot Robbie Give 'Suicide Squad' Cast (Oddly Spelled) Tattoos

Posted:

The name of the movie is "Suicide Squad" but the ultimate squad goal is to get inked with "skwad." Director David Ayer and cast had a visit to "Harley's Tattoo Parlour" for some bonding tattoos, with at least one tat inked by Harley actress Margot Robbie herself in full character. Will Smith (Deadshot) got in on the act to tattoo Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg) and Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) showed off his own "skwad" arm. (Do you think Harley is the one who gave Jared Leto's Joker all his tattoos?)

Here's the photographic "skwad" proof, shared across social media (don't skip the captions, especially Joel's):

'Dancing With the Stars' Fall Season 21 Pro Dancers Revealed

Posted:

It's almost time to head back to the dance floor for "Dancing With the Stars" Season 21. ABC's fall 2015 celeb cast won't be revealed until September 2, but the professional dancers are the real stars nowadays and "Good Morning America" revealed nine of the pros on August 19.

Here are the announced pros:

Karina Smirnoff (Season 13 pro champion, returning after a season off)
Val Chmerkovskiy (reigning Season 20 pro champion)
Derek Hough (five time pro champion)
Mark Ballas (two-time pro champ)
Witney Carson (Season 19 pro champ)
Peta Murgatroyd (Season 14 pro champ)
Sharna Burgess
Artem Chigvintsev
Allison Holker

That's only nine names, and DWTS has had 12-13 pairs for several years now. The show hasn't had less than 10 since Season 20, so ... should we expect more pro names to be added? Where's Tony Dovolani? How about Emma Slater? No Keo Motsepe? Maybe Maksim Chmerkovskiy and/or Cheryl Burke will return, like Karina, and we just have to wait for more names. They've done that before, so there's room for hope.

Here's GMA's DWTS video, including the pros' choices for dream partners:

DWTS showrunner Rob Wade recently previewed some changes ahead, telling Glamour, "We're going from celebrating [last season's 10th anniversary] to taking risks [in Season 21]. We had a really fantastic season last season with new ideas like Judges' Choice, so that's given us [the push] to take greater risks in our themes and competitions and challenges. We're improving the show in every single area."

Rob confirmed to E! News that judges Julianne Hough (who just got engaged), Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli will return. He also said it wasn't 100 percent clear if head judge Len Goodman would return, since he also judges "Strictly Come Dancing" in the U.K. in the fall, and he's talked about wanting to retire from flying back and forth each week. "We'll see where he lands," Rob told E!, "we'll see how his health is, what he wants to do. But whatever happens this season, whether he comes back for some or none, the following season...I'm sure he'd be back for." Rob said they're "looking at guest judges" to fill in for Len, when needed.

"Dancing With the Stars" Season 21 premieres Monday, September 14 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. What do you think of the pro lineup, and do you hope certain pros are added to the list, perhaps on September 2 when the celeb cast is announced?

UPDATE: According to E! News, there will indeed be 12 celebs, so the final three pro names will be revealed later ... probably on September 2.

Matt Damon 'Sciences the S**t' Out of Stuff in New 'The Martian' Trailer

Posted:

The Martian- Trailer No. 2
"The Martian" is "Cast Away" in space, minus Wilson the volleyball. And we're totally fine with that.

The new trailer for Ridley Scott's much-anticipated sci-fi film, based on the Amazon bestseller by Andy Weir, shows super likable astronaut Matt Damon struggling to survive after being stranded on Mars.

With only his wits and what little equipment he has left, he must MacGuyver his way through life on the red planet -- all while NASA plans a rescue mission that is still a few years away. Judging by the trailer, it's going to be a long -- and intense -- wait.

"Martian," which also stars Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig and Jeff Daniels, hits theaters Nov. 25.

Best of Late Night TV: Taraji P. Henson's 'Fast Family Feud,' Kelly Clarkson Sings Tinder Profiles

Posted:

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

On Monday night, Josh Groban sang Donald Trump tweets. Tuesday night, Kelly Clarkson sang real Tinder profiles on "Jimmy Kimmel Live." The original "American Idol" winner can sing the heck out of anything, and she really SOLD those wacky profiles. (Go for the girl who loves her hairless cat, baking cookies, and smoking blunts!) Over on "The Tonight Show," Taraji P. Henson and Jimmy Fallon played a crazy game of "Fast Family Feud." The "Empire" star got a little buzzer-happy -- she was happy in general and very energetic. LOVE her answers. And remember, hide the drugs when guests come over! (Someone tell that Tinder girl who loves smoking blunts.) Johnny Knoxville talked to Jimmy Kimmel about his buddy Steve-O's recent arrest and shared some Evel Knievel stories. Jimmy asked random kids what their parents do at work. 'Cause do they really know? "Orange Is the New Black" star Uzo Aduba told Conan O'Brien about her awkward marathon fan encounter. She was in the middle of running the NY Marathon -- actually around mile 17 -- when a fellow runner came up to her to say he recognized her and wanted a quick selfie. The guy snapped the photo before she could even say anything, then ran off. So rude! "Friends" alum Lisa Kudrow was on "Conan" to discuss her Emmy-nominated show, "The Comeback," which she revived after nine years. She also revealed the origin of character's name, Valerie Cherish. "Conan" also showed off "translated" foreign movie posters. Funny stuff: Zac Efron, who was on "The Tonight Show" Tuesday night, was on "Late Night with Seth Meyers" last night and explained what he's doing in the "Baywatch" reboot. Seth also read off a poem Zac's younger brother wrote about him. Very cute. Patrick Stewart, Anthony Davis, and Morrissey were on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" and here's Sir Patrick -- who kissed Conan last night -- putting on a magic show with James. Patrick Stewart is seriously one of the best late night guests ever.
