The Last Horror Blog: Celebrating the Cinema of Nightmares That Is 'Suspiria'

Posted: 20 Aug 2015 09:00 PM PDT

Dario Argento’s seminal Italian horror film Suspiria turned 38 last week and that seems like as good a time as any for me to wax poetic about one of my all-time favorite horror films. So, join me in celebrating one of the greatest horror films ever made. While Deep Red may be the film that signals the birth of Dario Argento as an auteur, Suspiria is the movie that cements his reputation as the most important Italian horror filmmaker to emerge since Mario Bava. With Deep Red, Argento had essentially crafted his magnum opus on the giallo form. After the conclusion of that film, there wasn’t much left to say about black-gloved sexual psychopaths and their nefarious fetishes. It would have been easy for Argento to coast on the success of Deep Red, churning out even more...

Watch a Red-Band Trailer for 'Hell and Back,' the Latest Attempt at a Mainstream R-Rated Animated Movie

Posted: 20 Aug 2015 07:00 PM PDT

Animation has never been exclusively geared to children, but sometime in the last half century or so it's become more associated with family entertainment and kiddie fare. Sure, there's the niche popularity of anime and acclaim of animated documentaries like Waltz With Bashir and the cult successes of Ralph Bakshi and Richard Linklater, but very rarely do grown-up-targeted animated features break out into the mainstream. South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut is probably the closest thing to an animated blockbuster stamped with an R rating. It had the benefit of being based on a very popular television series. Trey Parker and Matt Stone made substantially less money with the original work Team America: World Police. Still, it does help to start out with TV projects if...

The Geek Beat: 'Fantastic Four' vs. Hollywood's Worst Comic Book Movies, By The Numbers

Posted: 20 Aug 2015 05:00 PM PDT

At this point, it seems safe to say that the debut of the all-new Fantastic Four wasn't exactly a wild success. After two weekends in theaters, 20th Century Fox and director Josh Trank's big-screen reboot of the superhero franchise is having a tough time at the box office, leading more than a few professional pundits to declare it one of the worst comic-book movies ever made. But is it fair to lump Fantastic Four in with Catwoman, Howard the Duck and other films that notoriously missed the mark? Let's look at the numbers... As far as opening weekends go, Fantastic Four sits firmly in the middle of the pack with the $25.6 million it generated over its four-day “weekend” premiere (which includes $2.7 million in the now-standard Thursday...

Watch: The First R-rated 'Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse' Trailer Is Wickedly Funny

Posted: 20 Aug 2015 03:37 PM PDT

We haven't heard much about Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, and so call it a nice surprise to see this first trailer for what looks to be a wickedly funny, raunchy and action-packed zombie comedy. There's not much to set up. Three lowly, nerdy cub scouts must join forces with a badass strip-club cocktail waitress when their small town becomes infested with zombies. Not only does this trailer show us that the film is chock-full of R-rated humor, but it's also amusingly inventive -- like when the group is attacked by a bunch of zombie cats. Following a series of some more serious zombie movies like World War Z and the more recent Maggie, Scouts Guide seeks to bring the fun back to the genre in a way that very much reminds us of movies like Shaun of the...

Michael Shannon Teases General Zod's Strange Appearance In 'Batman v Superman'

Posted: 20 Aug 2015 01:45 PM PDT

Considering what happens to General Zod in Man of Steel, it may initially sound like a surprise that Michael Shannon is talking about his role in the sequel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. One might think that any return of his would be kept ultra secret and that he shouldn't be mentioning it in interviews, but then you have to remember that he's already in the trailer. Granted, he's not exactly up and walking around, but he is in it. That said, Michael Shannon's recent comments about what he's going to look like in Batman v Superman are intriguing. He told Vulture about how some very curious costume changes ended up resulting in him getting trapped in a bathroom while everyone was yelling for him to come to set. “I was in my costume, and I...
