First 'Empire' Season 2 Teaser Wants to #FreeLucious

Posted:

Empire
#FreeLucious!

Fox has released the first, very brief teaser for season 2 of its massive hit drama "Empire," and oh, how the tables have turned. Instead of flashbacks of Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) visiting ex-wife Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) in prison, now it's Cookie's turn to see the jailed mogul.
There's only 20 seconds worth of footage, but we get glimpses at all the major players: Jamal (Jussie Smollett) singing at a #FreeLucious concert; a smug Boo Boo Kitty (Grace Gealey) walking away from Hakeem (Bryshere Gray); Andre (Trai Byers) in a suit (what's new?); Lucious in an orange jumpsuit; and of course, Cookie, in all her glory, in a cage holding a gold microphone. Oh, Cookie, never change!

Season 2 of "Empire" amps up the drama even more - yeah, it's possible - with guest appearances by Marisa Tomei, Kelly Rowland (as Lucious's mom in flashbacks), Chris Rock, Alicia Keys, and Lenny Kravitz.

"Empire" season 2 debuts September 23 on Fox.

Quiz: YA Movie Quote or Taylor Swift Lyric?

Posted:

In recent years we've seen a slew of YA book adaptations hit the big screen, and several of them are actually pretty damn good. In that same time period we've also been #blessed with some of the catchiest pop songs ever, thanks to Taylor Swift and her sick beats.

To pay tribute to our love of YA movies and Queen Tay, we put together a quote vs. lyric quiz suitable only for true fans. Can you tell the difference between the two? Now's your chance to prove it: guess if these lines are Tay-Tay or YA.

The Lone Gunmen Will Be in All Six New 'X-Files' Episodes

Posted:

Lone GunmenThe Lone Gunmen are saddling up again for Fox's "X-Files" revival!

The trio of geeky conspiracy theorists - played by (from right to left in above photo) Tom Braidwood, Bruce Harwood, and Dean Haglund - will be in all six episodes of the event series. Haglund spilled the news in Australia, then confirmed it on Twitter. The Lone Gunmen were fan favorites in the original series, and starred in a brief spinoff show in 2001. It's unclear how the characters - Melvin, John, and Richard - will come back in the revival, since they died in an episode in the original series' final season. (Then again, the Cigarette Man also died in the original show and is coming back.)

But their return means that the whole "X-Files" gang is really back together again. In addition to David Duchovny's Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson's Dana Scully, we'll see the aforementioned Cigarette Man (William B. Davis) and FBI Director Skinner (Mitch Pileggi). There will also be appearances by Joel McHale, Lauren Ambrose, and Robbie Amell.

Fox has yet to set a date for the revival's broadcast, but sneak peek footage will air during Thursday night's "Wayward Pines" episode.

The truth is out there!

Patrick Wilson Learns Politics and Sex Don't Mix in 'Zipper' Trailer

Posted:

ZipperYou'd think politicians would've learned by now to keep their pants on. And yet, in this new "Zipper" trailer, Patrick Wilson's political career starts to come undone because he can't do that.

Wilson's Sam Ellis is a prosecutor running for office who has it all - gorgeous wife (Lena Headey), cute kids, and a bright future in politics. Except he's got a "zipper problem," as his advisor (Richard Dreyfuss) dubs it.

Watch the trailer.

Wilson is perfectly cast as a charming, good-looking, seemingly good guy who's got the clean-cut image that campaign managers drool over. But then he gets involved with high-class escorts, and his dreams threaten to go down the drain. Headey also looks to give a great performance as his ambitious wife, who won't let him ruin his chances without a fight.

"Zipper" hits theaters and On Demand August 28.

Michael Chiklis Joins 'Gotham' in Major Role

Posted:

The Paley Center For Media's 32nd Annual PALEYFEST LA - Gotham City's police department is getting a boost via "The Shield." TV Line reports that Michael Chiklis is joining Fox's "Gotham" as a series regular in season 2, beginning this fall.

Chiklis will play the department's new captain, Nathaniel Barnes. It's a role created just for the TV series, and puts the Emmy-winning actor in pursuit of bad guys once again.

According to the producers, Barnes "lands on the GCPD like a tornado, ripping out the dead wood of Gotham's police force. He is a law and order zealot; unafraid of making enemies - on either side of the law. For Gordon (Ben McKenzie), Barnes is a hero and a mentor, someone with whom he can share the burden of heroism. Captain Barnes proves himself to be a strong ally to Gordon ... but one day he will make an equally powerful enemy."

OK, so Barnes could end up being more of an antihero like Vic Mackey on "The Shield." But for now, he should be of major help to Det. Gordon, since season 2 is all about "the rise of the villains," as showrunner Bruno Heller teased at Comic-Con a few weeks ago.

'Game of Thrones' Season 6: Jon Snow Actor Returns to Filming Location

Posted:

Never mind Kit Harington's hair, this is the real reason why the Jon Snow rumors won't stay dead. As Watchers on the Wall noted, "Game of Thrones" Season 6 starts filming this week, and Kit -- who is being stalked for Jon Snow spoilers, bless him -- was once again spotted on a flight to Belfast, Northern Ireland, a key location for GoT production. One of the site's readers, who was on the flight from London to Belfast, spotted both Kit and Tom Wlaschiha (Jaqen H'ghar).

It would be one thing if this was the only time Kit was seen. Then maybe you could argue that he was returning to film a dead body scene, ala Charles Dance for Tywin Lannister. But, as they noted, he's had a few visits to Belfast in the past couple of months for pre-production.

So the running Jon Snow theory still seems to be that he'll be brought back from the dead by Melisandre, who is now at The Wall. She sees something in him and ... well, you know. His story needs to go on. It'll be interesting to see how they handle it, though, assuming it's right. He can't very well go back to being Lord Commander, so once he's ... undead ... what will he do?

In related-ish news, Irish actor Eddie Jackson is said to have booked a mystery role on GoT, heading to Belfast this week and Spain in October. If you're sick of the Jon Snow rumors/sightings, maybe new Season 6 casting intel and speculation (Iron Islands? Rickon? Flashbacks?) is more interesting.

Lead-Up to 'The Walking Dead' Season 6 and 'Fear' Premiere Starts This Weekend

Posted:

As Morgan Jones says, all life is precious, and yours should be devoted to "The Walking Dead" starting this Sunday, July 26. As AMC announced at Comic-Con, "Fear the Walking Dead" has its series premiere Sunday, August 23 at 9 p.m. on AMC, and "The Walking Dead" Season 6 has its supersized 90 minute premiere on Sunday, October 11 at 9 p.m., followed by "Talking Dead" at 10:30 p.m..

Leading up to those big premieres are two cool events:

1. AMC is launching a five Sunday, five season "Walking Dead" marathon, starting with Season 1, Episode 1, "Days Gone Bye" on Sunday, July 26 at 2:30 p.m. All six episodes of Season 1 will air that day. The next Sunday, August 2, Season 2 will start airing its 13 episodes at 7:30 a.m. The next Sunday, August 9, the 16 episodes of Season 3 will air. Season 4 airs Sunday, August 16. Season 5 will play out on Sunday, August 23. Here's AMC's full schedule. That marathon leads straight into...

2. The "Talking Dead Season 6 Preview Special" airs Sunday, August 23 at 8 p.m., with new details and interviews and cool stuff about the main show's sixth season. This will be followed by the "Fear the Walking Dead" premiere at 9 p.m.

So August 23 is a very big night for "Dead" fans, but the long slow shuffle to Season 6 begins this very weekend with the first Sunday marathon. Are you in?

'Mississippi Grind' Trailer: Ryan Reynolds, Ben Mendelsohn Gamble on Road Trip

Posted:

In the new movie "Mississippi Grind," Ben Mendelsohn plays a gambling addict who owes money to (his words) "everyone." He thinks his new friend, played by Ryan Reynolds, is a good-luck charm, so the two guys take a road trip together to a high-stakes poker game. You can get a preview of what happens in the new trailer, just released by A24:

You really shouldn't base major financial decisions on whether the next person out of the bathroom *is* or *is not* wearing glasses, but that is a sign of desperation. Mendelsohn's Gerry is clearly desperate, but Reynolds's Curtis must have some issues too, to go along with all of this.

Here's the official synopsis:

In this lively, freewheeling road movie, Emmy Award nominee Ben Mendelsohn plays Gerry, a talented but down-on-his-luck gambler whose fortunes begins to change when he meets Curtis (Ryan Reynolds), a younger, highly charismatic poker player. The two strike up an immediate friendship and Gerry quickly persuades his new friend to accompany him on a road trip to a legendary high stakes poker game in New Orleans. As they make their way down the Mississippi River, Gerry and Curtis manage to find themselves in just about every bar, racetrack, casino, and pool hall they can find, experiencing both incredible highs and dispiriting lows, but ultimately forging a deep and genuine bond that will stay with them long after their adventure is over. Reminiscent of classic 1970s American Cinema, Mississippi Grind is an unforgettable journey featuring two characters who-flawed as they may be-are always worth rooting for. It's a film about friendship, addiction, regret, family, and the paths we sometimes unexpectedly find ourselves on-told with empathy, humor, and a remarkable light touch..."

"Mississippi Grind" -- which comes from Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, the team behind Ryan Gosling's "Half Nelson" -- co-stars Sienna Miller, Analeigh Tipton, Robin Weigert, Alfre Woodard, James Toback, and Teri Wyble. It's scheduled for release on September 25.

Watch the trailer.

Aaron Paul Offers to Mediate Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj Feud With Peace Pancakes

Posted:

Launch Of The Galaxy S6 And The Galaxy S6 EdgeNever fear, everybody, Aaron Paul's got this! Nothing can stop his awesome, and he is probably clutch in a real-life crisis -- which is not to be confused with a celebrity Twitter feud crisis, which is mostly just amusing. The latest crisis started with Nicki Minaj, who was denied a VMAs nomination for "Feeling Myself," leading to a passive-aggressive online spat with Taylor Swift, resulting in the "Breaking Bad" alum jumping in with an offer of peace pancakes and coffee.

Long story short, Nicki and her fans were upset with her VMAs snub(s), and Nicki tweeted some shots that seemed like they were directed at Taylor Swift and "Bad Blood," without ever mentioning Taylor's name. The Hollywood Reporter documented the back and forth, but here's part of the Nicki-Taylor exchange: Nicki also retweeted several comments that did take direct jabs at Taylor:
Here's the part where Aaron Paul comes in:

Do it -- and film it! Seriously, though, can you imagine Jesse Pinkman mediating peace talks? He'd probably just shout "Stop being such a little b-tch!" in their faces and walk off. Bruno Mars was also inspired by the Twitter feud, but in a less helpful way -- he just tried to start a fight with fellow VMAs nominee Ed Sheeran. None of this addresses Nicki's or Taylor's race, gender, image and validation concerns, but when you're a celebrity and you get passive-aggressive on Twitter you deserve to be called out. But if they're not up for it, Aaron, we're 100 percent on board for that coffee and pancakes breakfast.

'The Muppets' First Look Pitch to ABC Is 10 Minutes of Magic

Posted:

'The Muppets': The Muppets - First Look
Are you ready to smile for 10 minutes straight from a life-giving mix of Muppets nostalgia and Muppets anticipation? Watch the video below, which first played at Comic-Con to promote the upcoming TV series and was just released to the public by ABC. As they note, "You were never supposed to see this. Here's the pitch that convinced ABC to make a show with The Muppets!"

Cue a "First Look Presentation," with Kermit telling his crew ABC wants to give them a new primetime series. "The show's going to be all about our personal lives, behind the scenes at home, our relationships. Sort of an adult Muppet show." (!) But not like that, although we do see Fozzie in a new relationship with a human (!!!) and Kermit in a love triangle -- actually square -- with another pig named Denise and Piggy in a forced romance with Topher Grace. Speaking of famous people, Elizabeth Banks stops by to suggest some celebs for the series, so Kermit asks if she knows any she can call. (D'oh!)

It's suggested that they do the show in fake documentary style, ala "The Office," and Gonzo mocks the "overused device" -- but only in his one-on-one cutaway. The first look follows Kermit trying to woo Piggy back onto the show, which she bailed on in jealousy (per usual). Watch the full video for jokes within jokes, updated with 21st century references but still tied to the Muppets world -- including hecklers Statler and Waldorf dissing the new show in a test screening. Some things never change!

"The Muppets" premieres Tuesday, September 22 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Chris Columbus Wants to Direct New 'Harry Potter' Movie to Fill in 19-Year Gap

Posted:

Two questions: 1) How do you feel about the first two "Harry Potter" movies, which were directed by Chris Columbus; and 2) How do you feel about a new "Harry Potter" movie following what Harry, Ron and Hermione did in that 19-year gap between the main story's end and the flash-forward?

Some fans may think we should leave Harry Potter well enough alone, and for all we -- or Chris Columbus -- know author J.K. Rowling may be among the "leave it alone" crowd. So far, she hasn't addressed the director's pitch, which he just made to Entertainment Weekly Radio.

Kit-14 Ron Weasley (RUPERT GRINT) and Harry Potter (DANIEL RADCLIFFE) arrive late to class in Warner Bros. Pictures family adventure film
Chris directed the first two movies, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," which were very faithful to Rowling's books and the most childlike of the series. After Chris, things got increasingly dark, adult, and creative with the filmmaking and artistic license. Chris told EW he originally wanted to direct the whole series but stepped away because it would take too much time away from his family. Here's his pitch to go back to Harry's world:

I would love to go back and do another one. Not 'Fantastic Beasts' as much, which I think is going to be amazing, but I would love to do another movie with those three characters - Harry, Hermione, and Ron. I'm just fascinated about what happened to them after the end of the last movie, because then they cut to [19] years ahead. There's [19] years there of great Harry Potter stories."

EW asked if he had approached J.K. Rowling, and he admitted, "I don't have the courage to actually mention that to her because I have such respect for her. She should do what she wants to do, but I really would love to know what's in her head about those missing years."

Well, it's out there now, and fans are now debating Chris's directing style, some praising his faithful adaptations and others yawning at his literal translations. Where do you stand on those movies, and do you think J.K. should give a green light to a movie (or movies) covering the time after our gang left Hogwarts but before they put their own kids on the train?

11 TV Movies So Bad You Have to Watch Them

Posted:

Some things are just so ridiculous that they turn into absolute amazinging-ness. TV movies often fit into that category. Part of the reason we want to watch a film called "Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!" isn't because it's gunning for Emmys or acting accolades (well, we hope it's not) -- it's because the aim is to not take itself seriously whatsoever.

Camp, extreme situations, and overly dramatic dialogue has been a big part of TV movie history. Sure, not every made-for-television film sets out to be a joke, but there are quite a few that present such insane premises that they have to be seen to be believed. It's not all tornado sharks here, of course, but that doesn't make them any less fun to watch. Sometimes the bad can be delightfully good. Here are 11 TV movies that are so bad you just have to watch them.

Best of Late Night TV: Jake Gyllenhaal's 'Slapjack,' Paula Abdul's 'Opposites Attract' Remake

Posted:

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

Jake Gyllenhaal played Slapjack Tuesday night on "The Tonight Show" -- perfect for the boxing star of "Southpaw" -- but his "uncouth" back-scratching interview was even more fun. First, here's the Slapjack game:
Slapjack with Jake Gyllenhaal
Now to the classic interview. Not sure if you saw the photo, but Jake got called out by the paparazzi for scratching his back with a fork; this was deemed "uncouth,", so -- on "The Tonight Show" -- Jake responded. "Come on. You take a picture behind my back and then call me uncouth?" He then defended the many uses of the fork, including back scratching. "It's not just used to eat with, you can pick other things up with it..." He also insisted his back was clean, so it's not really uncouth. Jimmy then gave Jake a special elongated fork for future scratching -- so Jake used it to scratch his beard, then licked it and poked it at Jimmy. All in all, a fantastic interview.
Josh Gad also fell in love with Jake, during his own sit-down with Jimmy, and ignored Jimmy. So Jimmy changed seats to be on the other side of Jake to get Josh's attention. So then Josh took Jimmy's old seat at the desk. They had fun.
This is pretty great. Paula Abdul, Chris Colfer, and Steve Byrne were on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" and Paula and James did a remake of her "Opposites Attract" video. This MC Skat Kat can really move -- James Corden for "Dancing With the Stars"!
Paula also talked about what it would take to get her to return for the final season of "American Idol." She said they are trying to get the original three to return for like a day or something, but James wants more than that.
Adam Sandler, who was on "The Tonight Show" Monday night, went to "Late Night with Seth Meyers" on Tuesday. He mentioned that he filmed his movie in Toronto and, as much as he loves Toronto, the city did not love him back for shutting everything down for so long to film. Adam and Seth also shared Will Forte stories. FYI, Seth's old NH driver's license was in Will's car for 11 years without Seth's knowledge.
Margaret Cho was also on "Late Night," and she and Seth showed off "their weird ass fingers" (it's true), talked about Tina & Amy at the Golden Globes, and also powered into the issue of political correctness in comedy. Margaret: "I think what it is, is white people like to tell Asian people how to feel about race because they're too scared to tell black people." She might be onto something...
The great Alex Morgan was on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" to talk about winning the World Cup. She brought a trophy to Jimmy -- his present "for the next 10 minutes" -- and he complained that it wasn't a real cup. Alex just had knee surgery, and she got off crutches. She'll be back to playing in 3-4 weeks, then they go on a victory/celebration tour. Jimmy asked if there are any teams she doesn't like playing, and she said "Canada's a good rivalry." She said "some people" think Canada plays a bit dirty and they're a very physical team. Not a fan, eh?
Denis Leary was also on JKL and he got a bit manic -- he doesn't even seem to take a breath, but it's great -- to talk about why his son thinks Jimmy is a genius. He then detailed -- so much detail! -- the road trip that convinced him Jimmy is truly a genius. It's all about pooping the perfect poop. Gross, but hilarious.
And here's Denis Leary's summer soup PSA:
And just because, here are kids explaining adultery, thanks to the Ashley Madison breach:

Daniel Craig Kicks All the Ass in New 'Spectre' Trailer

Posted:

Spectre - Trailer No. 2
James Bond's new movie seems hellbent on being bigger than the previous one.

The new trailer for "Spectre," which dropped today, shows 007 fighting, shooting and (naturally) car chasing his way through various European locals, in what looks to be the biggest Bond of Daniel Craig's career.

The 24th Bond film -- and Craig's fourth outing as the super spy -- pits 007 against a nemesis (Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz) from Bond's past. Their personal (and dangerous) relationship puts Bond on the trail of the evil titular organization -- traveling from Mexico, to Italy, to the Alps -- with lots of kick-punching bad guys along the way. (Think Blofeld-level bad.)

"Skyfall" director Sam Mendes returns for his second Bond film, and he is pulling out all the stops -- and we love the trailer's music cue that calls back to the them from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service."

If the trailer is any indication, the film's Rome-set Aston Martin car chase aims to be one of the series' best stunts ever. Because flame throwers. And it's nice to see Bond get some overdue action behind-the-wheel again; last time he took his trusty sports car for a spin, it was in 2008's "Quantum of Solace."

But will all the action, gadgets, and Bond Girls trump "Skyfall" as Bond's best film yet?

We'll find out when "Spectre" hits theaters November 6.spectre trailer
