New on DVD/Blu-ray: New Horror and Sci-Fi Classics, Plus the 'Rogue Cut' of 'X-Men'

Posted: 15 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT

A new sci-fi classic Ex Machina: Ex Machina is perhaps one of the most challenging science fiction movies in recent years, not because it contains some kind of Primer-esque plot that's going to require charts and diagrams to figure out, but because so much of the movie is affected by what baggage and preconceived notions the audience brings to it. On the surface the directorial debut of Alex Garland (who wrote Dredd, Never Let Me Go, and Sunshine) is about a brilliant billionaire (Oscar Isaac) who invites one of his employees (Domnhall Gleeson) out to his gorgeous, secluded estate to test out a mystery technology that just so happens to be a robot (Alicia Vikander) with a high level of artificial intelligence. Below the...

'Sisters' Trailer: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Throw the Year's Funniest House Party

Posted: 15 Jul 2015 07:30 PM PDT

You want more Tina Fey and Amy Poehler big-screen action? You got it! The funny ladies will star opposite each other in Sisters, due out December 18, where they play a couple of estranged sisters that reunite in order to throw one last rager before their parents sell off their childhood home.  Check out the film's first full-length trailer below, featuring a Fey and Poehler who clearly look like they're having a blast reuniting not just with each other, but with the earlier versions of themselves who liked to get down and toss a little jiggle into that wiggle. (Also: Props to John Cena, who not only steals scenes in Trainwreck, but looks to do the same in Sisters. Is there a Cameo of the Year award we can give him?) When it arrives in theaters on...

Why Comic-Con Matters

Posted: 15 Jul 2015 06:00 PM PDT

If there's one thing you can always count on in life, it's the haters. It's the people who look at something and only see what they don't like about it. Crowds! Marketing! People who smell like they haven't taken a shower in weeks! Buy this! Sell that! Look at this giant toy that we transformed into something the size of a three-story building! In the hours following the conclusion of yet another San Diego Comic-Con, much of the news was about, well, the haters. During an interview, Batman v Superman star Jesse Eisenberg referred to Comic-Con as "some kind of genocide" (he's since refined those comments), while those against the multi-day convention took to various social platforms preaching the awfulness of an event they claim is purely...

Our Marvel Expert Weighs In On 'Ant-Man' - How's It Stack Up?

Posted: 15 Jul 2015 04:30 PM PDT

Get ready, Scott Lang fans - your time has arrived! Okay, sit down. Both of you. Truth is, I am of two minds about Ant-Man. On the one hand, it is noticeably similar to Iron Man, with its tale of a scientist (Michael Douglas as Hank Pym) who uses his technology for part-time superheroics, fighting against the controlling interests (Corey Stoll as Darren Cross) at the company he founded, who would sell his tech to the highest bidder within the military industrial complex. Unlike Iron Man, Ant-Man is too often inert, stuffed with exposition and far more talking than doing. If you wanted your Marvel movies to feel smaller, well, here’s one. But for some brief, and truly glorious moments, Ant-Man really comes alive. The shrinking effects are wonderfully realized by director...

Posted: 15 Jul 2015 01:30 PM PDT

No other trio is on as big of a hot streak as Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and David O'Russell. With Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, the three dominated multiple awards seasons by delivering darkly energetic tales both romantic and hilarious at times, all about family, hope and conquering the American Dream.  In their latest, Joy, the three are back -- as is Robert De Niro, who starred in both Playbook and Hustle -- and once again they're weaving a tale around the real-life story of a woman who rose to become head of a powerful family business. Inspired by the life of Joy Mangano, who created the Miracle Mop and later went on to lead a company boasting over $1 billion in sales, the first trailer for Joy -- complete with all the darkly comedic...
