Dr. Cristina Yang, how we miss you. Let us count the ways... one, two, three... 19.

Ever since Sandra Oh exited "Grey's Anatomy," our Thursday nights have seriously been lacking in the sass department. No more frank talk. No more dry one-liners. Dr. Yang was as irreverent as she is irreplaceable. But now, thanks to the miracle of the Internet, we can fill every day with Dr. Yang's best quotes, zingers, one-liners, and comebacks.

Here, then, are 19 times (out of, like, a billion) that Dr. Cristina Yang made us so, so happy to be loyal "Grey's Anatomy" fans.cristina yang quotes

A 'Xena: Warrior Princess' Reboot Is in the Works at NBC

Posted:

Lucy Lawless Stars In The Show XenaLots of beloved series have announced comebacks recently, with everything from "The X-Files" and "Twin Peaks" to "Full House" and "Coach" set for revivals in the coming years. So why not "Xena: Warrior Princess"?

The Hollywood Reporter writes that that syndicated series, which starred Lucy Lawless as the titular ass-kicking heroine, is set for a reboot at NBC. According to the trade, the project is currently in "the extremely early development stages," with original producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi on board for what's being called a "modern reboot" of the fantastical action-adventure series.

In recent interviews, Lawless has made it known that she's eager to reprise her role as Xena, and wants star in a reboot or revival of some sort, preferably alongside original co-star Renee O'Connor (Gabrielle). How she'll factor into this NBC project is unclear, THR says, though she's being eyed for both on-screen and off-screen roles, perhaps in a producing/consulting capacity.

"Sources say the new Xena would have to have the charisma and charm of Lawless and the smarts of The Hunger Games' Katniss as producers are said to be looking for a sophisticated and smart superhero for a new generation," THR reports.

The project is still searching for a writer, and it's not known yet at this stage whether or not this is being eyed as a limited series run or for a full-season order. THR says that the hope is that this will be a continuing series, with multiple seasons.

The new "Xena" is tentatively expected to get off the ground sometime in 2016. Stay tuned.

George Coe, Original 'SNL' Cast Member & 'Archer' Star, Dies at 86

Posted:

george coeGeorge Coe, an actor whose long and eclectic career earned him legions of fans spanning several different generations, has died. He was 86.

Coe spent more than 50 years acting both in front of the camera as well as through voiceover work, turning in defining performances in multiple media and genres. He began his career on Broadway in 1957 opposite Angela Lansbury in the original cast of "Mame," and went on to star in "On the Twentieth Century" and "Company," among other shows.

In television, Coe made history as one of the original cast members of "Saturday Night Live," debuting with the Not Ready for Prime Time Players on the show's first episode in 1975. He appeared in numerous other television series over the years, with roles on shows including "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Murder, She Wrote," "Celebrity Deathmatch," "Bones," "Grey's Anatomy," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Gilmore Girls," "The Golden Girls," and "The West Wing."

His most recent voiceover work as Woodhouse, the put-upon butler to the titular character on FX spy series "Archer," introduced Coe to a new generation of fans. Woodhouse's small role was eventually expanded thanks to strong fan reaction to Coe's pitch-perfect performance as the hilarious, deadpan character. (Woodhouse was missing from the most recent season of "Archer," most likely due to Coe's longtime illness; it's unclear if or how the character's absence will be explained going forward.)

On the film side, Coe enjoyed success in mainstream and critical favorites, including a role in Best Picture winner "Kramer vs. Kramer." He appeared in many more films throughout his long career, including the 1975 original "The Stepford Wives," "The Amateur," "The Mighty Ducks," "The Omega Code," and "Transformers: Dark of the Moon."

Coe was nominated for an Academy Award for his 1968 comedy short film, "The Dove." He was also active in the Screen Actors Guild throughout his career, serving on the board of directors for 12 years and as vice president of the organization for two years.

Coe's "Archer" costar Aisha Tyler remembered her former castmate on Twitter, writing that the actor was "One of the loveliest & most talented men I have ever known."

Alex Rocco, Star of 'The Godfather,' Dies at 79

Posted:

Obit Alex RoccoAlex Rocco, a veteran character actor most famous for starring in Hollywood classic "The Godfather," has died. He was 79.

Rocco's daughter, Jennifer Rocco, revealed the actor's passing in a series of Facebook posts, writing that her father passed away on July 18 after a long, private battle with cancer. Jennifer Rocco thanked his fans for their support, writing, "I know he is watching over us."

Alex Rocco's prolific career spanned decades, but the actor became synonymous with "The Godfather," the 1972 Oscar-winning film in which he played casino owner Moe Greene. In a 2012 interview with The A.V. Club, Rocco said that that role was "without a doubt, my biggest ticket anywhere. I mean that literally."

Rocco parlayed that fame into a lengthy, eclectic resume in both film and television. He starred most recently on Starz series "Magic City," "Episodes," and "Maron," and also appeared on shows including "The Simpsons," "The Facts of Life," the 1960s "Batman" series, and "The George Carlin Show," among many others. He won an Emmy in 1990 for best supporting actor in a comedy series for "The Famous Teddy Z."

His multiple film credits included "Motorpsycho!," "Detroit 9000," "Hearts of the West," "Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins," "The St. Valentine's Day Massacre," "The Friends of Eddie Coyle," "Rabbit Test," "Herbie Goes Bananas," "Get Shorty," "That Thing You Do!," "A Bug's Life," "The Wedding Planner," and "Smokin' Aces."

Rocco is survived by his wife, Shannon; two sons; two daughters; and four grandchildren.

Here Are the New 'Ghostbusters' Character Names

Posted:

ghostbusters cast, ghostbusters reboot, ghostbustersWhile there's still plenty of mystery surrounding Paul Feig's upcoming "Ghostbusters" reboot, one additional detail that the director has provided is the four main characters' names.

Feig tweeted out that fact over the weekend, in response to a fan query about the titular foursome's identities. While some initial information had been floating around the interwebs for some time now, Feig has finally offered (some) clarity about who these women are.

According to the director, the main character's names are: Erin Gilbert, Jillian Holtzmann, Abby Yates, and Patty Tolan. (Those names are slightly different from those attached to previous character descriptions that have surfaced online, though we're assuming the details about the characters' day jobs are still more or less accurate.) Based on that intel (and the picture from the fan tweet that prompted Feig's response), we're still assuming that Kristen Wiig is playing Erin, Kate McKinnon is playing Jillian, Melissa McCarthy is playing Abby, and Leslie Jones is playing Patty.
So now that we can match faces to names, what else can we expect Feig to reveal about his version of the 'busters? He's already dropped a bunch of scoops on Twitter, but we're betting that the director has many more tricks up his sleeve that he's saving for when the flick hits theaters. We can't wait.

"Ghostbusters" is set for release on July 22, 2016.

'Captain America: Civil War': Martin Freeman Drops Big Hints on Character

Posted:

France The Hobbit PremiereMarvel's "Captain America: Civil War" is coming out next May, and while we know Martin Freeman is joining the gigantic cast, we don't know exactly which character he's playing. But Martin shared some new intel with the Italian site BadTaste, revealing he'll be employing an "East Coast American" accent, plus these other details...

We can say he works for the government; he works for the American government. He works in conjunction with the superheroes, and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroes' power, I suppose. So, you're not quite sure which side he's on. It looks a little bit like he's playing one game when, actually, he's playing another. It's the kind of character I like because it's ambiguous and because you don't know whether he's, you know, good or bad. And I like that area, that isn't black or white, I like the grays because I think there's just more fun to be had in not playing one obvious line."

Interesting. Some fans think Martin could be playing Everett Ross or maybe Henry Gyrich. As Comic Book Resources speculated:

Henry Gyrich is a Marvel character famous for making the Avengers' lives miserable throughout his career as the team's official government liaison, going so far as to attempt to shut the team down completely on several occasions. Another possibility is Everett Ross, the American regent to Wakanda assigned to keep tabs on the Black Panther, another Marvel character making his movie debut in "Civil War."

Do you have a theory on Martin's character? "Civil War" is scheduled for release on May 6, 2016.

What's New on TV, Netflix, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: July 20-26

Posted:

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered.

New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only

"Insurgent"
Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet return as Tris, Four and The Wicked Witch of Erudite in this sequel to "Divergent," which has its Digital HD premiere on July 21, ahead of the DVD/Blu-ray/On Demand release on August 4. The Digital HD/3-D Blu-ray Combo Pack/Blu-ray include more than four hours of bonus material, including audio commentary with producers Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher; "Insurgent Unlocked: The Ultimate Behind-the-Scenes Access" feature-Length documentary; and five featurettes: "Diverging: Adapting Insurgent to the Screen," "From Divergent to Insurgent," "The Others: Cast and Characters," "The Train Fight Unlocked," and "The Peter Hayes Story."

"Before We Go"
Chris Evans -- aka Captain America -- makes his directorial debut and also co-stars in this romance with Alice Eve. She plays a woman who races to catch a train from NYC to Boston and, on the way, she's robbed and left alone and lost in the city. If only there were a hot guy around to help her! This movie is scheduled for a limited release in theaters on September 4, but iTunes has it well in advance on July 21. So that's pretty cool.

"Veep"
Find out why Julia Louis-Dreyfus was just nominated for still another Emmy (she's been nominated 20 times and won 5!) when Season 4 of this HBO gem makes its Digital HD debut on July 20. Julia plays former Veep/now acting POTUS Selina Meyer, but will voters chose to elect her president or will she have to pass the baton to one of her rivals? (One of those rivals includes a key ally, Season 4 newbie -- and total scene-stealer -- Hugh Laurie.)

New on DVD and Blu-ray

"What We Do in the Shadows"
Do yourself a favor and check out this hilarious mockumentary about the lives of three vampires from Jermaine Clement ("Flight of the Conchords") and Taika Waititi ("Eagle vs. Shark"). The Blu-ray has more than two hours of extras, including behind-the-scenes footage, commentary from writers/directors Clement and Waititi, and deleted scenes. In case you need convincing, here's the trailer:

"Kung Fu Killer"
Teddy Chen directs this action movie which has a great title and a pretty badass premise: A vicious serial killer is targeting top martial arts masters -- which sounds like a death wish in the making -- and convicted criminal and kung-fu master Hahou (Donnie Yen) is the only one with the skills to stop him. But can Hahou be trusted? Blu-ray bonus features include a behind-the-scenes featurette exploring how they made some of the key sequences.

New on Netflix

"Teacher of the Year"
There's not a whole lot out on Netflix this week, to be honest, but this 2014 comedy will be available July 23. Matt Letscher stars as Mitch, who wins the California Teacher of the Year award and gets a tempting offer that might prompt him to leave his job. Keegan-Michael Key and Sunny Mabrey co-star.

"The Guest"
Dan Stevens leaves Matthew Crawley waaaayyyy behind in this dark thriller, which is available July 25. Dan plays David, a young soldier who arrives on the doorstep of the Peterson family, claiming to be a good friend of their son, who died in action. But all may not be as it seems, and when people in town start dying, it's time to start questioning "the guest."

TV Worth Watching

"Zoo" (Tuesday on CBS at 9 p.m.)
We're up to Episode 4 of the James Patterson adaptation and things are getting wild. Get it -- wild? Here all week! In "Pack Mentality," CBS notes, "Jackson (James Wolk), Abraham (Nonso Anozie), Mitch (Billy Burke), Jamie (Kristen Connolly) and Chloe (Nora Arnezeder) are tasked by a top intelligence agent to find the cause of the strange animal behavior around the world. When the team travels to Mississippi to investigate the wolf attack on the prison, Mitch and Abraham break off to catch one of the wolves, and Chloe, Jackson and Jamie discover that death row inmate escapee Evan Lee Hartley (Marcus Hester) might somehow be involved in the attack."

"Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!" (Wednesday on Syfy at 9 p.m.)
Is this really "TV worth watching?" No. Oh hell no, even. But it's summer. And it's worth following just for the absurdity of it all -- and to check Twitter to see what inspired tweets may emerge from your fellow guilty pleasure lovers. In this round, Ian Ziering, Tara Reid and Cassie Scerbo return, with David Hasselhoff, Bo Derek, Ryan Newman, and Jack Griffo joining the fun.

"I Am Cait" (Sunday on E! at 8 p.m.)
Caitlyn Jenner's eight-part docuseries begins July 26. Follow Cait's search for her "new normal" and see how her transition impacts those closest to her.

Mark Hamill Wants Amy Schumer Cast in 'Star Wars: Episode VIII'

Posted:

Mark Hamill, aka Luke Skywalker -- who should not have been looking at sexy photos of someone dressed as his sister -- is A-OK with Amy Schumer's new "Star Wars" GQ spread. Unlike @StarWars. And Lucasfilm. And Disney. And some disapproving fans. But whatever, he's the Jedi. And not only was the original "Star Wars" hero fine with the photos, he thought they meant she was joining the crew for 2017's "Star Wars: Episode VIII."

Here's his tweet on the subject:

They would be lucky to have her, but she'd be even luckier to be part of this amazing franchise. (But considering that R-rated spread and the official "Star Wars" reaction, we're guessing no one will be getting lucky.) The next "Star Wars" movie, "Episode VII - The Force Awakens," is coming out this December 18. That one is already filmed, but there's still time for newbies to be cast in "Episode VIII," which has a release date of May 26, 2017. Heck with Amy, though, please cast us!

'Clan of the Cave Bear' TV Series: See Ron Howard, Millie Brady Set Photos

Posted:

It was only last July, but it seems like thousands of years ago that we first heard about this "Clan of the Cave Bear" TV series -- and now we're finally getting updates on its progress.

Last year, Lifetime gave a pilot order to an adaptation of Jean M. Auel's six-book series, which features "The Clan of the Cave Bear" as the first title. The story follows a girl's struggle to survive in a prehistoric time when modern Cro-Magnons interacted with Neanderthals. There was a movie made in 1986 starring Daryl Hannah, but this series is probably trying to erase that from our memories.

"I've always admired Jean M. Auel's timeless work," Rob Sharenow, Lifetime's exec VP and general manager, told Variety at the time. "With the visionary creative team of Ron Howard, Linda Woolverton, Brian Grazer, Alli Shearmur, Jean M. Auel and Francie Calfo behind it, this project has it all - epic storytelling, great characters and a unique world that's never been explored on television before. This is exactly the type of top-tier creative talent and great stories we embrace at Lifetime."

Ron Howard just finished filming "Inferno" -- the latest Dan Brown movie with Tom Hanks -- and now he's apparently turning his attentions to "Clan." He just tweeted this photo on set, and an update for a curious fan:
So far it's just a pilot, not a full series order, but with such an impressive team in place it's hard to imagine we won't get to see the full "epic series" ... eventually. The original 2014 story said "Clan of the Cave Bear" was targeted for a potential 2015 launch, but it's not clear if that's still the case.

MTV noted that the star of the pilot, Millie Brady, has been sharing updates on Instagram. Here are a few pics, and you can keep an eye on her to see if she shares more:

Demi Moore Reacts to 21-Year-Old's 'Unthinkable' Death at Her Home

Posted:

2014 LACMA Art + Film GalaDemi Moore is in shock after the death of a 21-year-old man in her backyard pool -- all while she was out apparently of the country.

One of the actress's assistants was holding a party at the Los Angeles house when the tragedy happened. L.A. County coroner's Lt. Fred Corral told the Associated Press that the young man, named by the AP as Edenilson Steven Valle, had been missing for about 10-15 minutes before his friends found him floating in the deep end of the pool. Police were called around 5 a.m. on Sunday and Valle was pronounced dead. Law enforcement sources told TMZ the victim seemed to slip and fall into the pool. His family and friends reportedly told authorities he didn't know how to swim.

Demi and her family were not around when this happened, but she reacted to the death in a statement (via TheWrap):

I am in absolute shock. I was out of the country traveling to meet my daughters for a birthday celebration when I got the devastating news. The loss of a child is an unthinkable tragedy and my heart goes out to this young man's family and friends. I ask that you please respect the privacy of all concerned during this sensitive time."

What a horrible shock for his family -- 21 and he's gone. Scary that it can happen that fast. Stay safe out there, everybody.

Adam Sandler Addresses 'The Ridiculous 6' Walk Out by Native American Actors

Posted:

World Premiere of PixelsAdam Sandler is currently promoting his new movie "Pixels," but while he's talking to the press, the press is asking about another one of his projects: "The Ridiculous 6." That's the name of his Netflix comedy, which has an all-star cast and premieres December 11. You may recall the controversy over how Native Americans are depicted in the movie; about a dozen Native actors and actresses, and the cultural adviser, walked off the set in April, sharing their complaints. Netflix issued a statement standing by Sandler and the movie, and now the actor/producer is weighing in himself.

"It was just a misunderstanding and once the movie is out will be cleared up," he told The Associated Press on the red carpet for the world premiere of "Pixels." Sandler, who also co-wrote the script, called the movie 100 percent pro-American Indian.

Fans can judge for themselves (or skip the movie entirely) this December. "The Ridiculous 6" co-stars Nick Nolte, Terry Crews, Steve Buscemi, Will Forte, Taylor Lautner, Luke Wilson and Whitney Cummings.

'Spectre' Updates: 'Bigger' Than 'Skyfall,' 'Fantastic' Theme Song, Mendes' Last Bond?

Posted:

"Spectre," the 24th movie in the James Bond franchise will shake - not stir - its way into theaters October 26 in the U.K. and November 6 in the U.S. It took director Sam Mendes five years to make the latest Daniel Craig Bond movie, following their collaboration in "Skyfall." Sam talked to BBC Radio about the new movie and his decision that "this is probably it" for him when it comes to directing Bond movies. He did say that once before, but this time he added, "I don't think I could go down that road again," because it swallows up so much time and energy. So if he's not around for Bond25, we'll have to stay tuned for who might be jumping in. (Christopher Nolan? Wes Anderson - kidding! Although that would be interesting...)

"Spectre" follows a cryptic message from Bond's past that sends him out to uncover still another sinister organization. The movie co-stars Ralph Fiennes, Christoph Waltz, Monica Bellucci, Léa Seydoux, Naomie Harris, Rory Kinnear, and Ben Whishaw. Sam said they just finished shooting it, with a cast and crew of more than 1,000 people. "This is a bigger movie than 'Skyfall,'" the told the BBC. "It's shot in more places - we were in Mexico City and Tangiers and northern Sahara and Rome and the Alps and London. It's been an enormous undertaking."

The director also shared that a "Spectre" theme song was just finished and we'll be hearing more about it soon. "I can say that the song's been recorded and it's fantastic and I'm very excited about it. You won't have to wait long [to find out who sings it]." Rumor has it, Ellie Goulding recorded the theme song, but we'll just have to wait and see/hear.

Are you excited for a "bigger" movie than "Skyfall"? Yahoo Movies UK has spoilers and screen shots on the huge opening scene, if you want to head over there for a preview. The pre-credits scene was described by producer Michael G Wilson as "the biggest sequence we've ever done." Here's another look at the teaser trailer, which came out in March:

Did 'Ant-Man' Really Win the Box Office?

Posted:

Who won the box office this week? Depends on how you look at it.

We treat the box office like a horse race every weekend, as if the new and old movies were all competing on the same playing field. But the truth is, on any given weekend, every new release is more like a stock IPO, each with its own unique background and set of expectations. They all just happen to be launching at the same time.

So you could view the weekly winner, not necessarily as the movie that sold the most tickets, but the movie that did the best on its own terms. Here's a look at the movies that made the biggest splash at the ticket counter this weekend, depending on which measure you use.

"Ant-Man": Yes, "Ant-Man" sold the most tickets in absolute numbers, an estimated $58.0 million worth. But considering how high Marvel has set the bar for its films' opening weekends, is that really a good number? It's their lowest opening weekend since 2008's "The Incredible Hulk."

Given that most pundits projected a weekend premiere of about $60 million, "Ant-Man" opened a little below expectations. Then again, the tiny hero is a fairly obscure Marvel character, so you can argue that the movie was lucky to do as well as it did, proving (as did "Guardians of the Galaxy" last summer), that, no matter how unfamiliar the superhero, the Marvel brand name alone is enough to conjure up a No. 1 box office debut.

"Minions": At an estimated $50.2 million, the cartoon did almost as well on its second weekend as "Ant-Man" did on its first.

In 10 days, it has zoomed past $200 million (to $216.7 million) and surpassed by nearly 10 percent the take of predecessor "Despicable Me 2" over its first 10 days ($197.9 million). But then, that film opened on a Wednesday, so its first 10 days included just one full weekend. Also, "Minions" had a sharper drop in its second weekend (57 percent) than pundits predicted. (Some thought it would hold on to enough of last weekend's business to defeat "Ant-Man.") That steep drop-off doesn't bode well for the film's prospects of out-earning "Despicable Me 2," which grossed $368.1 million.
"Trainwreck": The R-rated comedy's estimated $30.2 million debut, good for third place, is a vindication for first-time movie star/co-screenwriter Amy Schumer, for producer/director Judd Apatow, for the marketers at Universal, and for R-rated comedies targeted toward women.

Despite the growing popularity of the Comedy Central-bred comic actress, the movie was expected to be a tough sell, at least to men. (Indeed, only 34 percent of the audience were guys.) It probably helped that Universal's ads emphasized Apatow's role ("from the guy who brought you 'Bridesmaids,'" said the ads, even though Apatow merely produced that film), or that the filmmakers stocked the cast with LeBron James and other guy-appeal sports stars. But it also suggests that Schumer's humor has more appeal to men than experts thought.

After all, some pundits predicted the movie would open only in the high teens or mid-20s. In fact, the movie opened on a par with Apatow's biggest opener yet, "Knocked Up" ($30.7 million), and higher than all the other movies he's directed.

"Jurassic World": It's in fifth place this weekend, with an estimated $11.4 million. But its total to date is $611.2 million, making it only the fourth movie in history to cross $600 million in North America. And it did it in only six weeks.

"Irrational Man": The new Woody Allen movie opened on just five screens and earned just $188,000. But that's an average of $37,600 per screen, the highest per-theater average of any movie currently playing.

That doesn't mean "irrational Man" would have done "Ant-Man" sized numbers if it had opened on thousands of screens, but it does bode well for the movie once it expands onto a few dozen, then a few hundred screens as the summer progresses. Meantime, it's earned solid bragging rights.
"Mr. Holmes": The revisionist take on Sherlock Holmes, with Ian McKellen playing the sleuth as a very old man who's losing his memory, opened on just 363 screens, but it took in an estimated $2.5 million, enough to crack the Top 10 in tenth place. It averaged $6,857 per screen. All those numbers are very good for an independent movie, especially one with a 76-year-old leading man.

It wasn't all rosy news at the box office. In their third weekends, "Terminator Genisys" and "Magic Mike XXL" both continued to languish. So did four-week-old "Ted 2."

The lessons? Not every franchise reboot is a guaranteed success, there may not be room in the marketplace for more than one or two films whose primary audience is women, and there are some movies that not even the Universal marketers can sell. Overalll, the box office was down 10 percent from last weekend, which is understandable, given how huge "Minions" was when it debuted with $115.7 million a week ago.

Still, there are many movies this weekend that have reason to celebrate with a toast. Raise your glasses, even if they're thimble-sized.
