Comics on Film: The 'Ant-Man' Legacy And What It Means for the Future of Marvel Movies

Posted: 24 Jul 2015 10:00 PM PDT

After a somewhat troubled production that led to the departure of director Edgar Wright, Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man has finally been released in theaters. Audience response seems to be generally positive, with the film becoming Marvel’s 12th straight number one opener. While Ant-Man as a whole embraces the tenets and surroundings of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it also represents a bit of a different approach in their films. While entries like Iron Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor, and Guardians of the Galaxy tell origin stories that have a general truthfulness to the source material, Ant-Man takes a bit of a different approach. It doesn’t necessarily deviate too heavily from what...

The Geek Beat: What The New 'Ghostbusters' Movie Needs To Learn From 'Battlestar Galactica' and Other Reboots

Posted: 24 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT

For some people, the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot is cause for celebration, but for others it's being treated as something akin to the next coming of Gozer the Gozerian – an apocalyptic event likely to result in human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, and mass hysteria. No matter which side of the Ghostbusters divide you fall on, though, you can be certain that Bridesmaids director Paul Feig's spin on the 1984 classic is not only happening, but it's going to have people talking right up to – and likely following – its arrival in theaters. Still, while remakes and reboots are all the rage these days, their track record (so far) hasn't exactly been the stuff of franchise-restarting Hollywood dreams. So what can Ghostbusters do to avoid...

Interview: Michael Peña Explains Why He Can't Pay Attention to His 'Ant-Man' Praise

Posted: 24 Jul 2015 08:15 PM PDT

Ant-Man has one of the best special effects of the summer. And we're not even talking about all of the incredible shrinking sequences, we're talking about Michael Peña, who steals the spotlight every single second he's on screen as Luis, who is quite possibly the most effortlessly charming criminal that has ever been in a movie. But Ant-Man isn't the only movie Peña steals scenes in this summer. He's also one of the main characters in the horror movie The Vatican Tapes (which hits theaters today), where he plays a Father trying to help a young woman with a particularly nasty case of demonic possession. We also fully expect Peña to also straight up steal all of his scenes in Vacation and The Martian later this year...

Could Michael Jackson Have Improved the 'Star Wars' Prequels?

Posted: 24 Jul 2015 07:00 PM PDT

We can't get enough of tales of what might have been. Earlier this week, we shared the story of how Ian McKellen nearly wasn't Magneto nor Gandalf. Now, here's one of how Ahmed Best nearly didn't play Jar Jar Binks in the Star Wars prequels. Instead, none other than Michael Jackson could have played the comic-relief character. But it would have been done much differently. At least visually. Best revealed the bombshell in a new interview with Vice. Here are the details, as quoted by the site: That's what George [Lucas] told me. Me, Natalie Portman, and George's kids—we were at Wembley arena at Michael Jackson's concert. We were taken backstage and we met Michael. There was Michael and Lisa Marie [Presley]. George introduced me as...

Watch: Sublime 'Queen of Earth' Trailer Breaks Out Some Old School Psychological Horror

Posted: 24 Jul 2015 05:45 PM PDT

It's hard to make a movie trailer stand out in this day and age, so one way to do that is simple: make a movie trailer from a different day and age. That's the tactic the new thriller Queen of Earth has gone for and the result is downright sublime. The movie, directed by Alex Ross Perry (Listen up Philip) stars Elisabeth Moss as a woman who just needs to get away from it all, so she heads to a friend's (Katherine Waterston) lake house for some peace and quiet. But since we already used the word thriller in this post, you can no doubt guess that she doesn't quite find peace and quiet. The trailer is a total throwback to the '70s and '80s, when movies could be built up as events based purely on things like style and performance. It's a promise that if...

The Last Horror Blog: Our Favorite Horror Movie Priests

Posted: 24 Jul 2015 03:00 PM PDT

Actor Michael Pena is the latest Hollywood talent to don the collar to take on the forces of darkness when Mark Neveldine’s The Vatican Tapes opens in theaters nationwide today. However, Pena’s portrayal of Father Lozano, a Catholic priest tasked with saving the soul of a young woman from satanic forces is just another in a long line of similar portrayals in horror film history. Join us today in revisiting some of the greatest men (and one woman) of the cloth – the saviors you want to have around whenever Satan comes knocking.   Clancy Brown: Hellbenders This underseen (and underappreciated) horror comedy follows the antics of The Augustine Interfaith Order of Hellbound Priests – a group of priests committed to blaspheming as much as possible in...

Movie News: First Look at Charlie Hunnam in 'King Arthur'; 'Jurassic World 2' Set for 2018

Posted: 24 Jul 2015 12:00 PM PDT

King Arthur: Charlie Hunnam will star in King Arthur, and our first official look at the actor on set reveals that the king prefers casual wear. The movie, directed by Guy Ritchie and heading to theaters on July 22, 2016, will offer a new take on the legendary character, transforming him into "a street-wise hood" and sending him into battle against "giant snakes, massive war elephants, and a monstrous viking-like creature known as The Nemesis." [EW.com]   Jurassic World 2: A sequel to Jurassic World is on its way. That's not surprising, in view of the movie's tremendous box office success worldwide, as well as at least one loose plot thread that was left dangling. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will reprise their starring roles; the...
