Geek Beat Anniversary Edition: 100 Geeky Movies Everyone Should See

Posted: 28 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT

Time flies when you're geeking out. Two years ago, I kicked off my run as the author of “Geek Beat,” and this week you're reading the 100th installment of my weekly soapbox on all things sci-fi, fantasy, superhero, and assorted cinematic geekery. In honor of hitting that lofty triple-digit mark, I've put together a list of 100 must-see geeky movies. Some of the films I've included are critically acclaimed, cultural touchstones, while others are simply personal favorites that helped shape my own cinematic leanings. It's not an all-encompassing, definitive compendium of necessary films, but it should (hopefully) provide a checklist of sorts for anyone wondering where the gaps might be in their own mental cache of geeky movies. (Oh, and spoiler...

'The Night Before' Trailer: Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Anthony Mackie Get Wild on Christmas

Posted: 28 Jul 2015 07:30 PM PDT

When it comes to the Christmas comedy, there are two basic kinds. The warm, fuzzy version that's fit for grandparents and grandkids alike. Then there's the vulgar, raunchy adult comedy that would probably have too much eggnog and puke all over the warm and fuzzy version. Can you guess which side of the fence The Night Before starring Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Anthony Mackie is on? Directed by Jonathan Levine (50/50, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane), The Night Before features that trio of R-rated regulars playing friends who have long held an annual tradition of having a wild time in New York City on Christmas Eve. But since one of them is becoming famous (Mackie) and one is becoming a dad (Rogen), the tradition is going to come to an end. Instead of moaning...

'The Diabolical' Trailer Teases a Different Kind of Haunted House Movie

Posted: 28 Jul 2015 04:30 PM PDT

Haunted house movies have been the flavor of the month for, well, years now in Hollywood. So between all of the Paranormal Activities and Insidiouses and Conjurings, it'd be understandable if you feel you can take a break from movies where attractive people repeatedly walk slowly around dimly lit hallways.  That being the case, we still hope you'll give The Diabolical a shot. We promise it's not your average haunted house movie. To explain why may tread into spoiler territory, so just trust us when we say it's good and that the first trailer for the movie thankfully doesn't actually spoil anything.  Alistar Legrand's film, which we caught at SXSW earlier this year, takes the stuff that still does work in haunted house movies (a family in peril...

Watch Tom Cruise and Jimmy Fallon Lip-Sync Serenade a Girl with "You've Lost That Loving Feeling"

Posted: 28 Jul 2015 01:30 PM PDT

Tom Cruise is one of the world's biggest movie stars, and all it takes is a few minutes in his presence to see why. He's the guy who hangs off an airplane in order to make a stunt feel more authentic, and then he's the guy who spends hours signing autographs and taking selfies with fans at the Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation premiere. He's involved in every square inch of his movies -- from writing to plotting to driving his own motorcycle at 200mph to learning how to hold his breath underwater for six minutes -- and when he's done all that, he even makes time to challenge Jimmy Fallon to a lip-sync competition on The Tonight Show. From a suave performance of The Weekend's "Can't Feel My Face" to an epic serenade of "You've Lost...

Posted: 28 Jul 2015 12:00 PM PDT

Top Gun 2: Producer David Ellison recently proclaimed: "There is no Top Gun 2 without Maverick," the cocky pilot played by Tom Cruise in the 1986 original. Now Cruise himself says: "If I can figure it out, if all of us can figure it out, it’d be fun to do, I’d like to fly those jets again, but we got to do all the jets practical, no CGI on the jets. … If we can figure all that out, and the Department of Defense will allow us to do it, that would be fun.” The project is currently in the scriptwriting stage. [Extra via The Guardian]   The Rosie Project: Richard Linklater (Boyhood) is under consideration to direct The Rosie Project, which is set to star Jennifer Lawrence. It's adapted from a novel by Graeme Simison about a...
