Interview: Alex Garland Talks Going From the Low of 'Dredd' to the High of 'Ex Machina'

Posted: 14 Jul 2015 09:00 PM PDT

Two guys and a robot girl. That's all you need to make a killer sci-fi movie. Oh, and the brain of Alex Garland, who cooked up the smart, engaging, often stunning Ex Machina as his directorial debut. If you haven't seen it yet, you can fix that now that the hit movie about two men testing an artificial intelligence is out on DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital HD. We spoke to Garland, who also wrote The Beach, Sunshine, 28 Days Later, and Never Let Me Go, earlier this week for the Ex Machina home video release and couldn't help but bring up the last time we spoke, which happened to be on the eve of the release of Dredd, the last movie he wrote and produced. That movie has since found its following, but even he'd be the first to say that audiences just were not there for it...

Marvel Studios Countdown: Comic-Con Celebrates the Many Identities of 'Ant-Man'

Posted: 14 Jul 2015 07:30 PM PDT

Things looked bleak for Ant-Man. Filmmaker Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) stepped away after a long, slow dance with the project, leading fans to devour ashes and wear sackcloth and wait out the end of the world. Some of us got over it quicker than others. Marvel didn’t waste any of their own time with doom and gloom. They hired Adam McKay (Anchorman) to re-work Wright’s screenplay, and though McKay would’ve made an interesting directorial replacement, Marvel tapped Peyton Reed (Bring It On) to bring the superhero to life. It’s been a long year since this all went down, and the short memory of our news cycle and the internet outrage it’s often coupled with have settled to a place in which we’re all pretty okay now with this new...

The Geek Beat: The Biggest Hits, Misses, and Lingering Questions of Comic-Con 2015

Posted: 14 Jul 2015 06:00 PM PDT

Another Comic-Con has come and gone, and all that's left is to sift through the ashes and marvel at the good, shake our heads at the bad, and ponder what it all means for our favorite heroes and villains. As always, this year's convention was filled with early looks at some of the most anticipated, upcoming movies, and just like in previous years, some of those sneak peeks generated the desired buzz while others – for one reason or another – fell short of expectations. Here are some of this year's biggest hits, disappointing misses, and lingering questions.   THE HITS Even without a new trailer or clips to present, Lucasfilm made Star Wars a prominent talking point early and often during the show. Friday's panel featured a parade of...

Posted: 14 Jul 2015 01:30 PM PDT

"He's stronger than any of us!" "He's not stronger than all of us." The final Fantastic Four trailer has arrived online only a couple days after it premiered in front of 6,500 fans inside the film's Hall H Comic-Con panel, and what this look at the film stresses above all else is that it's really a story about a family -- about four friends with extraordinary powers who must work together to save the world.  Check it out.   The new incarnation of the Fantastic Four looks darker and more grounded than the previous movies, tackling issues that include a government looking to exploit the foursome when they learn of their newfound powers. There is some humor in there, which is nice to see, and one thing stressed at the panel...
