Michelle Rodriguez is a Hit Man Trapped in a Woman's Body in 'The Assignment' Trailer Posted: 23 Jan 2017 08:00 PM PST Possibly this year's most controversial release, The Assignment debuted at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival to mixed reviews and some protests from the transgender community. There's still no official release date from U.S. distributor Saban Films, but a trailer has just made its way online, and we'll let you judge for yourself on its subject matter. The Assignment, which used to be titled (Re) Assignment, stars Michelle Rodriguez as the new physical form of Frank, a male hitman for the mafia who wakes up to find himself turned female. In biological terms anyway. In these times of greater discourse on gender identity and trans persons, it's tricky how to address a character who still identifies as a man but received a forced sex... Here are a slew of highlights, starting with a selection of the most notable debuts. The Big Sick was a big story among narrative features. Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon wrote the romantic comedy, drawn from their own experiences; Judd Apatow produced. Nanjiani stars opposite Zoe Kazan. It debuted on Friday evening and sparked an instant bidding war for distribution rights. Some #Sundance thoughts on the terrific @TheBigSickMovie, about the humor, heartache and hardships of love. cc: @kumailn & @emilyvgordon pic.twitter.com/BmMBYvjQfK &mdash... Here's Everything You Want To Know About the Ending Of 'Split' (Spoilers, Obviously) Posted: 23 Jan 2017 03:30 PM PST If you haven't seen M. Night Shyamalan's new movie Split, stop reading this post. Seriously. It's full of spoilers. This is the last warning. If you've made it this far, we assume you've either seen Split or just love reading spoilers. Whatever the case, let's cut to the chase. How cool is it that M. Night Shyamalan made a secret sequel to Unbreakable? Fans of the Bruce Willis superhero movie have been begging him for a follow-up for years, and then he goes and makes it with as little fanfare as possible. Normally superhero sequels spend months - if not years - under the microscope, with fans tearing apart every... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Is the Official Title of 'Episode VIII' Posted: 23 Jan 2017 02:40 PM PST You can stop calling it Star Wars: Episode VIII now. Disney just made it official. The next entry in the main saga will be called Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It's a good, clean, simple title. So let's obsess over what exactly it implies. Option A: The Singular Jedi In the vernacular of Star Wars, the plural form of jedi is also jedi. We know the new movie, written and directed by Rian Johnson, has Luke Skywalker as its main emotional driving force. So the title could obviously be a reference to him. After all, everyone's been looking for Luke for years and years, and The Force Awakens opening crawl did declare him the last Jedi. Option B: The Plural Jedi But maybe the crawl was wrong and Luke isn't truly alone on his watery... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
James Cameron Planning New 'Terminator' With 'Deadpool' Director Posted: 23 Jan 2017 01:30 PM PST Released when he was just 32, James Cameron's The Terminator immediately established him as a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood. The sci-fi thriller, made for an estimated $6.4 million, earned more than $80 million worldwide, an enviable return on investment for a movie that wasn't made for a major studio. Cameron, who worked initially as an art director, production designer and special visual effects artist before making his directorial debut on Piranha II: The Spawning, quickly lined up a big-budget sequel, Aliens, which took the horror premise of the original and transformed it into a rockin' action movie that made more than $131 million worldwide, a huge figure at the time. Terminator 2: Judgment Day flipped the original's premise by making Arnold... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 23 Jan 2017 12:00 PM PST Han Solo: Woody Harrelson (The Edge of Seventeen, above), recently confirmed to be appearing in the upcoming Star Wars movie that will revolve around Han Solo, was asked if he would be playing Garrish Shrike, a mentor to Solo who was first introduced in a Star Wars novel. Harrelson hesitated, asked for the question to be repeated, and hesitated again before replying: "Yes, I am." Later a Lucasfilm executive cast doubt on which question Harrelson was answering. [Variety via CinemaBlend] Zoe: Ewan McGregor (American Pastoral, above) will star in Zoe, replacing Charlie Hunnam, who just dropped out due to scheduling issues.
