The 'Princess Bride' Honest Trailer Makes Westley and Buttercup's Love 'Extra Spicy'

Posted:

If you've been waiting for Honest Trailers to do "The Princess Bride," Screen Junkies has finally said, "As you wish."

The latest video in the parody video series has been released, and it's almost as good as the classic film itself. It celebrates everything that is wonderful about film -- also known as "the best sappy swashbuckling medieval love story ever made." On top of that, it hilariously pokes fun at all the (fantastically) ridiculous parts.

The relationship between Westley (Cary Elwes) and Buttercup (Robin Wright) is at the top of that list. We get to revisit their budding love as the narrator reminds us that it was all based on her making him do chores for her. Then, we get to see things get "extra spicy" when Screen Junkies changes the music in one scene to turn up the heat. You'd be surprised by how much of a difference it makes.

'Deadpool' Screenwriters Talk Sequel, 'X-Men' Crossover

Posted:

A "Deadpool" sequel was a given even before the film became the awards season contender no one would have predicted, but now the follow-up is getting extra attention.

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers behind the "merc with the mouth," recently chatted with Deadline about their surprise hit, including its upcoming sequel and "X-Men" crossover potential. They're making good progress on the second film and are "very, very excited" and "nervous" about it, according to Reese.

Although there's been plenty of talk about Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) teaming up with other superheroes, the unconventional character will still be the headliner of "Deadpool 2."

"It'll be a solo movie," Reese told Deadline. "It'll be populated with a lot of characters, but it is still Deadpool's movie, this next one."

The plan is for them to shoot the action flick this year, and they've already written multiple drafts of the script.

"It's taken different twists and turns, but it's really coalescing," Reese said.

The writers aren't ruling out future crossovers, though. Wernick pointed out that they used the first film to "set up Deadpool and create his world," leaving them room to fit in other characters as well. The reverse is also true, as Reese explained.

"It hasn't been planned yet, but I don't think it would be too hard to drop Deadpool into another movie," Reese said.

In "Deadpool," for example, the relatively normal "X-Men" characters provided "foils" for the crazy hero.

"There was enough sanity surrounding Deadpool's insanity that it balanced pretty nicely," Reese said. "I think you could probably take Deadpool the way they did with Spider-Man in 'Civil War' and drop him into a serious movie and it might work."

Betsy Brandt Shifts From Comedy to Dark Indie in 'Claire in Motion'

Posted:

Vulture Awards Season Party - ArrivalsBetsy Brandt wants to make you laugh. And then make you cry. And then make you laugh a little more. And maybe cry again after that.

After her major breakthrough playing Marie Schrader on "Breaking Bad," Brandt's career path has been highlighted by a facility to shift between comedic and dramatic material, from traditional sitcoms like "The Michael J. Fox Show" to dramedies like "Parenthood" to historical dramas like "Masters of Sex" to her current gig, the uniquely structured family comedy "Life in Pieces."

When it came time to tackle a new and fairly heavy dramatic role, Brandt shifted from TV to film to take on a particularly challenging acting role in the stark indie movie "Claire in Motion," playing a woman whose frustrating attempts to discover the fate of her mysteriously vanished husband takes her down dark and unexpected paths, including learning that he'd kept an entire corner of his life -- and someone in it -- completely separate from the one he shared with Claire.

As Brandt reveals to Moviefone, her "Breaking Bad" experience set the bar for follow-up projects pretty sky-high, even when genre-gear-shifting as quickly as she can, and one of those new roads will almost certainly lead her to "Better Call Saul" -- and almost already did.

Moviefone: I was really struck by how hard it must have been to pull this performance off with so little dialogue to rely on.

Betsy Brandt: One of my favorite things about it! It's funny -- I'm looking at a play right now. I'm like, "She talks too much. I don't want her to say everything." One of my favorite things about Claire, I keep using the word intricate. I really wanted the audience to see what she's feeling. And for me as an actor to play it like that is definitely much more interesting than just, I say "I'm angry," and that's how you know I'm angry.

I thought the writing was so good, and I really loved working with [filmmakers] Annie [Howell] and Lisa [Robinson]. It was great. It feels like it was a whirlwind, and 10 days ago. We did it in a short amount of time -- at my request, which I kind of was like, "Who was the idiot that said we should only do it in this many days?" I was like, "Oh, that was me, because of my kids' schedule." But it was really phenomenal to work on. And I feel like it turned out. I kind of feel like a jerk saying that because I'm in so much of it. It's so good.

That's what kept striking me about it, is how little you're literally telling the audience, but that you get it as the audience. You see it all, and you have to act that and count on communicating that without that much dialogue to lean on.

It's a lot of new information for her, which is kind of a goal when you act always. It's the first time it's happening. You haven't done three takes already. But for her, it's that kind of situation. People ask you, they're like, "What would you do if X? And you say, "I can tell you what I think I would do, but until you're in something like that, you don't know how you're going to respond." And that could be all over the spectrum, and she goes through ... it's not really stages of grief, because she hasn't accepted that, especially at the beginning of the film.

It was a roller coaster ride for me, too, given everything that I knew about her at said point, how she responds to seeing that tape. Is it him? Is it not him? How do I feel about it? I had to say, that was just such a gift from the writing that had so much there for me to continue to find, the entire time that we were working.

That's another interesting point: There's this threat of ambiguity that kind of permeates the whole movie. But also not. You get everything that's happening as it's happening, but she just has to deal with the ambiguity of it all. How was that to wrap your head around as an actor?

It's funny -- I know for me, and I think a lot of people just in life, we just don't like uncertainty. And we're almost not used to it anymore. It's like, you can get answers for everything. I was so struck when that Malaysian airline went missing. And so often things happen and we don't know the answers. Like, where's the black box? Where's the plane? Why can't we find it? That's just life, and the world, and the universe, that you don't get answers. And it just kind of drives you crazy to not know. You need to know.

I was talking about this with a friend of mine: I had a friend that had some medical things come up, and ultimately the doctor said, "We don't know. Is it OK to say we don't know?" And he was hesitant. He's like, "That's one of the hardest things to say. We ran all these tests. We still don't know." That's not the worst thing that could happen. It could be something awful. And it's just the not knowing, how to process that.

And on top of it for Claire, she thought she knew. It wasn't anything that would cross her mind. After playing her, I questioned everything in my own life. I'm like, if that can happen to her, that can happen to anybody. It's not a situation that's not impossible.

The question that the film would raise for anybody, whether the spouse disappears or not, is there a secret life that my partner has that I have no access to? What did that open up in your head?

Oh, my God. Everything. Not that I don't trust my husband, and then you have to look at yourself. Are there things that I don't want him to know that I do? Or that I say? Or conversations I have with people that I'm not comfortable telling anybody else, or why? It kind of made me think of how, not that you're a wildly different person with one person than another, but there's like sides of yourself that really flourish with certain people in your lives, and that can be good and bad.

Also, for me with Claire, I let the script continue to surprise me while we were shooting it. I thought it was one thing when I went into it, and then it just became so crystal clear to me like where he is, and that was a decision I felt I had to make for her. I have to say, once I accepted that there were no answers, because I like to do my homework when I do something, even whatever role.

I'm on a comedy right now. I still do, I'm like, "No, she did this in Season 1 at that point, so that's who she is." Because sometimes I feel like, A, it's less interesting to not just be like, whatever, that's funny, so we do it. I also, I think this is a big part of being on "Breaking Bad" for six years. They did not miss a beat. I'm not saying that I had that level of attention to detail, but you respect your audience. Otherwise, just do this in your basement and no one needs to see it.

The audience pays attention.

Absolutely. And I do. When I'm watching, I'm like, you can't have a character change horses midstream. Now they're a person who would do this when they never would have done, like there are things you have to earn, and I'm cool with that. I love that part of doing this.

And Vince Gilligan and his team, they do the same thing on "Better Call Saul," while also paying respect to everything that happened on "Breaking Bad." Do you look forward to getting a call one day from them?

Oh yeah! We've talked about it. I'm not going to lie. We've discussed it. Oh, absolutely. I would do anything to play with those guys.

Even if it was his scene to walk through because the timing was perfect for her to be there?

Yeah. He asked, actually, I didn't know about this until after it was done, thought about putting me in the finale of last season. And Vince was like, "Great. He's in the hospital. Marie can be there." Peter Gould was like, "Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa."

At that moment -- and I'm also a fan of the show -- at that moment, he was like, "We can't have Marie." And I was like, "Oh no. When he's coming in, when Michael McKean's character is coming in, you should totally, definitely just have my character just walking around bitching at people dressed in purple. But for me, because I'm a fan of the show, I wanted to be on it. But also because I'm a fan of the show, that moment is not about her. That was so ... Oh my God!

Being a part of something of that caliber did great things for you. How did that affect the way you want to chart your career?

It's funny. I said to Vince, I'm like, "The best thing that you've done for me is also the only thing in which you wronged me, because it messes with your head. How do you choose anything after that?"

I remember looking at pilots the next season, and I went right into, we were still finishing "Breaking Bad," and I was starting "The Michael J. Fox Show," because to me, I just wanted to do a 180 and go from doing drama to doing a comedy. I had never done a comedy on TV before. If you're not a little scared with whatever job you're doing next, you've got to choose something else, I feel like. And I also think when Michael J. Fox wants you to play his wife, there's just one answer, and it's "yes yes yes yes yes." And then that show only did one season.

So next season, I remember telling Vince "Would you read script that I'm considering if I sent them to you?" He's like, "Yeah!" I'm like, "I don't know. I can't compare everything to 'Breaking Bad.'" So I look at a couple things. I want it to be good material. But I also look at, like, What do I need to be doing right now? And that might just be something that you do that you're like, you're going to flex some muscles you haven't ever used, or just need to be flexing at that moment.

And, ideally, whatever I do, it makes the next thing I do ... I'm even better at it. I feel like when I do a play, I always come out of that a better actor, regardless of what kind of play it is, if it's Shakespeare or whatever it is. A lot of it is just me as an actor. I do have people who help me, because I'm like, "Can I go do that play in like Arkansas?" And they're like, "No." I'm like, "I think it would be really good for me." So that's good, too. That's important, too, because that allows you to keep getting the jobs that you want to get.

When you went back to your day job -- which is, again, another 180 -- how did this make you better at that?

Another thing for me, too, that "Breaking Bad" got me, and I don't know if I mention this enough, the people that I worked with. From Vince, everybody, but that cast, everyone in that show made me a better actor. You have to have that.

Sure, not that I'm like, "No, I never want to be No. 1 and have it just be about me and my character. I think that's more interesting. That's more interesting to me. And when I took "Life in Pieces," they had already offered to Dianne Wiest. And I was like, "That's my show! If that's what they want, and I think she might take it, I want to go where she goes."

From this, I would think the biggest thing for me was, and I remember Vince used to say this, if you're lucky enough to work on a project that the writing is good enough to do this, let the script surprise you. And, of course, you want to do your homework and you want to make thoughtful decisions about your character, and then the choices that you need to make throughout the story that you're telling. Sometimes there are just places that they need to get to, and you need to get there.

But I did that with Claire. I let her surprise me through the whole way. Where she got to in the end, I don't know if I would have thought that's where she would have gone in the beginning. I was OK with that. And a big part of that was because I so trusted the people I was working with. I felt like they're just so intuitive and so talented. I knew when I met them that I wanted to tell their story, and that I would be in good hands. That's huge. That's huge. I don't know how you work with a director that's not really great.

What are you looking forward to for the back half of the season on "Life In PIeces"?

Oh, my God. I feel like Season 1 was so much fun. I remember saying to Jason Winer, there was a learning curve for me though. I said, I feel like I'm wearing a sweater that's not mine, and I'm supposed to make it look like it's my favorite comfy sweater. And now I feel like it is. I always did, because I love the people, but I so look forward to going to work. I'm always happy with what we do.

The further you get into a character in a show, you learn things about them where they get to surprise you, and you get to be surprised. It lets you just go a little bit deeper into the specificity and the idiosyncrasies of all these people. In this show, I love how they fit together. I feel like we see even more of that, which is so much fun to play, and then you play off the people that you're working with. I have to say, right now, this holiday season, I'm thinking about all these things that are going on in the world that I can't control, feels really good to go to work and be able to laugh, and ideally make other people laugh.

And the response that I've gotten from this show, it's been so great. People are, I think, just as excited about it as "Breaking Bad." It's newer, but they're just like, "Oh, my God. We love this." I feel like the show has its own identity too, and the more we get to know each other, it gets even more and more fun, which is incredible.

It must be fun for you to be known publicly, but to still be able to disappear, to a degree, into a role.

I think you have to. Right? That's the difference between being like a star and being an actor. I came out here to be an actor. I knew I was good at it. I knew that's what I wanted. There's other stuff that comes with that, and that other stuff is what helps you get the jobs you want, too. I don't complain about that either.

No, I feel really lucky that the business has allowed me to spread my wings. Sometimes you get kind of pigeonholed. It just happens. And then it's like, you do drama, that's it. That's what you do. We've seen you do that, we know you're good at it. We want to see you do more of that, and those are the offers that you get. But, I have to say, I really, really like doing the comedy. Like, right now, I'm doing "Life in Pieces," like, I want a good drama to sink my teeth into for hiatus. Something to just, like, bury your soul. Like, cry. Like, ugly cry.

Taraji P. Henson Signs on to Play a Hit Woman in 'Proud Mary'

Posted:

US-ENTERTAINMENT-CNN HEROES ALL-STAR TRIBUTE-ARRIVALSTaraji P. Henson is going from playing a character with killer style and swagger on "Empire" to one that's an actual killer.

The actress has boarded the upcoming thriller "Proud Mary," Variety reports. She'll star as a hit woman whose perspective is shaken after she meets a young boy. Apparently, he brings out her previously undiscovered maternal instincts, which we suspect will complicate her life and brutal job.

Henson is coming off the success of "Hidden Figures," a film in which she starred as one of the African-American women who played a key role in the space race. The film has been nominated for a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and has been making a splash at the box office. Meanwhile, "Empire" has just been renewed for its fourth season.

"Proud Mary," which was written by John Stewart Newman and Christian Swegal, still needs a director. Assuming all goes according to plan, Screen Gems aims to start production in April.

'American Horror Story' Season 7: Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters Set to Return

Posted:

Premiere Screening Of FX's 'American Horror Story: Hotel' - Arrivals"American Horror Story" has already been renewed for Season 8 and 9, but let's not forget that we still have Season 7 to enjoy before then.

When the next installment of the anthology horror series arrives, it will bring back some of fans' favorite faces. Both Sarah Paulson -- fresh off her 2017 Golden Globe win -- and Evan Peters have signed on to return, creator Ryan Murphy revealed at a TCA event Thursday. He wouldn't share any details about their roles, Variety reports, so news of their returns will have to be enough for now.

The two actors have been on "American Horror Story" since the beginning, taking on different roles as the story has changed. Several other actors have remained involved for multiple seasons as well, including Lady Gaga, Kathy Bates, Jessica Lange, and more. We wouldn't be surprised to see more "AHS" vets join them in Season 7.

Murphy is again keeping the show's secrets, just like he did with Season 6 and its fake themes. All the creator would reveal was that the seventh season will be "a modern-day story." That doesn't narrow the possibilities enough to do any guessing. Sigh.

We'll have to try to be patient till "American Horror Story" Season 7 premieres.

'Girl Meets World' Could Continue on Another Network

Posted:

Disney Channel's 'Girl Meets World' - Season Two"Girl Meets World" fans were devastated when the Disney Channel decided to cancel the "Boy Meets World" spinoff series after only three seasons (and a long, agonizing wait to learn its fate). But according to the show's creator, there still could be more "Girl" ahead.

TVLine reports that Michael Jacobs -- who also created "BMW" -- has been in talks with several (as yet unnamed) outlets to continue the series. And that's all thanks to dedicated "GMW" fans.

"There are talks underway, but we're at the very very beginning stages," Jacobs told TVLine. "And I can tell you it's because of the audience's reaction to the cancellation that there is interest in other places."

Jacobs said passionate fans' paper airplane campaign -- mimicking imagery from the show's opening credits -- was especially attention-grabbing, and other networks are certainly eager to capitalize on such a dedicated fan base.

"Networks want to do something to gather an audience," Jacobs explained to TVLine. "The fact that there is an audience who's been so loyal says a lot."

The producer didn't discuss star Rider Strong's recent comments that Disney didn't want "Girl" to focus on more dramatic plot lines, and didn't indicate whether or not that's something the show would explore should it get a pickup from another platform. Still, with the rise of streaming, it's certainly within the realm of possibility that the series could delve into more controversial stories if it does indeed continue.

Stay tuned to see if "Girl" will meet another day. In the meantime, the season three finale (and possible series finale) featuring a huge "Boy Meets World" reunion airs on Disney Channel on January 20.

Will Smith and Tom Hanks May Join Live-Action 'Dumbo': Reports

Posted:

'Collateral Beauty' - European Premiere - Red Carpet ArrivalsDisney is reportedly circling two huge names for its upcoming live-action remake of animated classic "Dumbo," with both Will Smith and Tom Hanks allegedly in consideration for key roles in the flick.

First up is a report from Deadline, indicating that the Mouse House wants Smith to star in the film, which is being helmed by Tim Burton. The trade didn't provide any details about what role Smith may play, though apparently Disney is "moving aggressively" to begin shooting as soon as possible.

That may pose a problem for "Bad Boys for Life," the long-awaited sequel which is currently prepping production with Smith and co-star Martin Lawrence. According to Variety, if Smith does take on "Dumbo," it could have "a significant effect" on the threequel.

"If Smith is leaning toward 'Dumbo,' the start date for 'Bad Boys 3' would be pushed back or the film could be shelved entirely," Variety reports.

The trade had a bit more intel about who Smith might play, with the star being eyed to portray "the father of the children who develop a friendship with the lovable elephant after seeing him at the circus."

Variety also had some scoop about another major star who could join the flick: Tom Hanks. The trade reports that Hanks has already been offered the role of the film's villain, though he, too, is considering starring in another feature instead, the WWII drama "The Grey Hound."

Despite the uncertainty surrounding their casting, teaming the two A-listers would certainly make sense for Disney, which has been courting some big names for its recent parade of live-action remakes. We'll have to see if this particular combination pans out.

'Arrested Development' Season 5 Is 'Close,' Brian Grazer Says

Posted:

It's nothing we haven't heard before, but there may be some new hope that another season of "Arrested Development" is finally, officially coming together.

That's the word from executive producer Brian Grazer, who told several outlets at the Television Critics Association winter press tour that season five of the beloved cult comedy could be happening very soon. In an interview with Deadline, Grazer seemed cautiously optimistic about finalizing a deal with Netflix for the new episodes.

"We are close," Grazer told the trade. "I think we found a way to create the compensation structure for all the actors and create a work matrix so they can still make movies and do other things and it will all integrate. So we are really close — I think within a couple of weeks at the most."

In a separate interview with TheWrap, Grazer said that the hardest part of the negotiation process was making sure all of the actors' schedules were accommodated fairly (and they received adequate financial deals). But the entire cast is definitely on board, he told the trade.

"I think we're really close to pulling it off finally," Grazer said. " ... [I]t should be happening soon."

What "close" and "soon" mean in terms of production -- not to mention a release date -- is still murky at best, however. And we're not exactly taking Grazer at his word yet, either, since he's been making similar promises for almost two years now.

What does make us optimistic is that all of the stars are still attached, as Bluth matriarch Jessica Walter promised last fall, and that Netflix seems determined to work around everyone's busy schedules. We just hope that that doesn't mean more green screen scenes and separated story lines, which really put a damper on season four.

Stay tuned to see if Grazer has any additional updates in the days and weeks to come.

Here's Your First Look at Marvel's 'The Defenders'

Posted:

the defenders, marvel, netflix, jessica jones, luke cage, daredevil, iron fistIt's a superhero team-up that's been more than three years in the making, and soon, Marvel's "The Defenders" series will finally be hitting Netflix. Now, we have a sneak peek at the titular heroes together for the first time.

In a new cover story, Entertainment Weekly delved into the circumstances surrounding the union of the Defenders -- Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) -- and debuted an awesome new image of the foursome. Each hero stares down the camera, looking tough and ready to tackle whatever challenge comes his or her way.

As for what it is exactly that makes them decide to join forces in the first place, it's still a bit of a mystery, though Marvel TV head honcho Jeph Loeb explains in an interview with EW that each of the heroes' individual series has been carefully plotted so that their meeting in "The Defenders" is a natural extension of their existing stories. They'll first come face-to-face in a crowded (read: filled with enemies) corridor in the Midland Circle offices, a nod to a plot line from "Daredevil," from which they'll have to fight their way out.

"Every one of them is following their own trail of bread crumbs, trying to unpack a mystery in New York," showrunner Marco Ramirez told EW of the lead-up to the big team-up. "We wanted them all caught off guard. Once they're in that room together, it's kind of like, 'Oh, s—, who are you?'"

Fans will be able to witness that fateful meeting themselves when "The Defenders" hits Netflix sometime this summer.

Ben Affleck Cut 'Live by Night' Sex Scene: 'I Looked Like a Sick Polar Bear'

Posted:

'Live By Night' - European Premiere - VIP ArrivalsFew things are less sexy than a sick polar bear, although now that Ben Affleck has described himself that way, we wish we could see the "Live by Night" scene in question.

"Live by Night" marks Affleck's fourth time directing a feature film, and he also produced, stars in, and wrote the screenplay for the movie, based on the Dennis Lehane novel. So he's all over it. But not all of him is in it, as he joked to the Associated Press Wednesday night at the film's London premiere.

The star told AP there was one tough aspect to directing himself -- his attempt at steamy bedroom scenes didn't quite work out as planned.

"I just try to make myself look as good as possible. I just think 'What's the most flattering sexual aspect of myself?' and I try to put that in the movie," he joked. "And you know what? I had to cut it out, it was that depressing. I looked like a sick polar bear."

That is depressing. Almost as depressing as Casey Affleck thanking everyone else on the planet except brother Ben at the Golden Globes. Ben gave Casey hell for that on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," and Casey will probably return the favor in his own way if he picks up an Oscar.

For now, the elder Affleck is busy promoting his less depressing version of "Live by Night," which co-stars Zoe Saldana, Sienna Miller, Chris Messia, Elle Fanning, Chris Cooper, and Brendan Gleeson.

Who the Heck Is Peter Dinklage Playing in 'Avengers: Infinity War'?!

Posted:

"Avengers: Infinity War" promises to feature a massive cast of Marvel heroes and villains, and that cast just keeps growing. Now we've learned that "Game of Thrones" star Peter Dinklage has been cast in an unspecified role.

Marvel Studios may not be saying much, but we have a few ideas as to what characters Dinklage could be playing as the Avengers head into space to battle Thanos. Scroll down to check out our theories.

1. M.O.D.O.K.
M.O.D.O.K.'s name stands for "Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing," and you can get a pretty good idea of his personality from that. Basically a gigantic head with a penchant for murdering minions with his forehead laser, M.O.D.O.K. is one of the primary leaders of the science terrorists known as AIM.

We saw a version of AIM. in "Iron Man 3" led by Guy Pearce's Aldrich Killian, but we want to see the group's true lord and master enter the fray.

2. Eternity
As "Infinity War" delves deeper into Marvel's cosmic elements, it only makes sense that moviegoers will start to be exposed to some of the more powerful entities that pull the string of the Marvel Universe.

We could see Dinklage and his soothing voice easily filling the role of Eternity, the ageless being who exists everywhere at once and can reshape reality at a whim, especially with Benedict Cumberbatch's mystical hero Doctor Strange playing such a big role in this sequel.

3. Starfox
With Thanos stepping into the spotlight, we're hoping we'll get to meet the rest of the Mad Titan's family in "Infinity War." Dinklage would be a perfect fit to play Thanos' estranged brother and occasional Avenger, Starfox.

Starfox spends most of his time drinking and womanizing when he isn't saving the universe, and we can think of a certain other Dinklage character who matches that description.

4. Pip the Troll
Pip the Troll is perhaps the most obvious choice for Dinklage, given the actor's short stature. Perhaps too obvious, but the fact that Pip is so closely tied to Thanos does make it a likely possibility. The mischievous Pip is a frequent sidekick to Adam Warlock, one of Thanos' greatest enemies and another character we assume will play a central role in "Infinity War."

5. Arno Stark
Given Dinklage's knack for playing sarcastic, charismatic characters, he reminds us more than a little of Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark. Why, they could almost be brothers. So why not take the opportunity to cast Dinklage as Arno Stark?

Originally an evil Iron Man from the future, Arno was recently re-imagined in the comics as Tony's long-lost brother. We'd love to see the two Starks join forces on the big screen.

6. The Watcher
The Watcher is an immortal being cursed to observe all events in the universe but never interfere. A rule which he sometimes breaks when the situation is dire enough (for instance, when Thanos is trying to assemble the Infinity Gauntlet).

There's been speculation that Stan Lee has actually been playing The Watcher in his various cameo appearances, but we think Dinklage would be perfect to play another character whose main skill is "knowing things."

We'll find out when "Infinity War" hits theaters Summer 2018.

'American Horror Story' Already Renewed for Season 8 & Season 9

Posted:

Great news: "American Horror Story" has at least three more seasons to build up with amazing hype, only to inevitably disappoint with the actual results. Yay!

FX already renewed AHS for Season 7, which airs this fall. The network just announced that it is picking up AHS Season 8 and Season 9, which could potentially continue the franchise into 2019.

Here's a statement from FX CEO John Landgraf:

"'American Horror Story' launched the modern limited series revolution and — as evidenced by the most recent installment 'Roanoke' – it remains as vital today as when 'Murder House' stunned audiences six years ago. Each new chapter is a cultural event, beloved for every new twist in imagery, style, cast and plot."

Here's more from Fox Television Group Chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman:

"When Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk came to us seven years ago with the idea for a horror series structured as an anthology, with a group of actors returning year after year, in different roles, settings and time periods, we were in awe of the sheer originality and ambition of their vision. They've since delivered six fantastic installments which have rightfully attracted millions of viewers, critical raves and dozens of awards."

AHS continuing at least to Season 8 is not a surprise, since Ryan Murphy teased mythology connections between Season 7 and Season 8 in interviews conducted over the summer, before Season 6 premiered. And here's what Murphy teased to Entertainment Weekly back in September, about a "secret season":

"I've been working with a writer on a season that only he and I know. It's like a two-year project that we'll continue to work on the sly and not tell anybody. I don't know when it will [air] but it's also an experiment. It's a different way of doing it. It's one person writing all episodes."

So far, AHS has given us "Murder House," "Asylum," "Coven," "Freak Show," "Hotel," and "Roanoke." No idea what's next, but the rumors have already started and should pick up over the summer.

FX had more to say at today's TCA Winter Press Tour, including setting "The Americans" new season premiere date (March 7) and revealing Ryan Murphy's next anthology series will start March 5 with "FEUD: Bette and Joan," starring AHS alum Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford with Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis.

Mahershala Ali Blames a Chair for His Awful 'Game of Thrones' Audition

Posted:

28th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Film Awards Gala - ArrivalsUnexpected lesson: Always bring your own chair to an audition. Actor Mahershala Ali is on the verge of an Oscar nomination for his role in "Moonlight," after winning over fans in everything from "Luke Cage" and "The Hunger Games" to "House of Cards" and "Hidden Figures." But he could've been on "Game of Thrones" if it weren't for that dang stool. (He should've brought his own Iron Throne.)

Ali was on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" last night, and described his audition for the "Game of Thrones" Season 2 role o of Daenerys Targeryen's Qarth frenemy Xaro Xhoan Daxos. (The role ultimately went to British actor Nonso Anozie.)

What went wrong for Ali? He explained to Kimmel:

"I think my audition guaranteed that I wasn't almost on 'Game of Thrones.' That was one of the worst auditions of my life. [...] I'd gone in for this casting director before, and I felt like I had two other wonky auditions with her, but I was really prepared this time around. Totally off book, had all my lines memorized, had this whole thing worked out with this chair. I was working with doing all these power moves and stances and whatnot. I had all my stuff worked out."

And then he walked into the HBO offices and ... they didn't have a chair with a back, they just had two stools.

"So, I'm kind of sitting there with my feet halfway off the ground, a little bit stiff during the audition, and then she goes, 'Wow, you gotta loosen that up, that was really stiff. That was a problem.' So it was because I didn't have a back to my chair."

Kimmel said now he knows, he has to bring a chair the next time -- even though that might be weird, to walk into an audition with your own chair. At least you'd be memorable!

Watch that clip, and more from Mahershala Ali (pronounced Mah-HERSH-alah), whose birth name is even longer:

Watch Michelle Obama Say Farewell in Glorious 'Tonight Show' Takeover

Posted:

Michelle Obama was feted like the queen she is last night on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon."

Our outgoing FLOTUS surprised fans who were recording emotional goodbye messages to her; had her own special edition of Thank You Notes; was serenaded by Stevie Wonder himself -- who performed "Isn't She Lovely" and "My Cherie Amour"; and played a classic game of "Catchphrase" with comedians Dave Chappelle and Jerry Seinfeld.

CATCHPHRASE

For "Catchphrase," Michelle -- a champion trash-talker -- was paired with Jimmy Fallon, with Dave Chappelle and Jerry Seinfeld as their opponents. Bless this year that President Obama's "Dad Jeans" made one last appearance. Fallon was the weak link of his pair, taking too long to get words out, but Chappelle and Seinfeld both accidentally said one of the buzz words, which is surprising for stand-up comedians who are usually so quick-witted. But Chappelle won the entire night with this quip to an unraveling Jimmy Fallon: "Yeah, don't lose your show." Heh.

GOODBYE, JIMMY

Here's the First Lady getting emotional saying goodbye after eight years in the White House:

THANK YOU NOTES

For the "Thank You Notes," Michelle said she liked being on Jimmy's side of the desk ... so maybe she can host her own show next?

FAN SURPRISE

It is so beautiful to see fans record emotional messages for FLOTUS, only to have her pop out and surprise them afterward:

STEVIE WONDER

And here is the great Stevie Wonder singing a medley to Michelle Obama:

The 'CHiPs' Trailer Is Totally Nuts, Like Obsessed With Nuts

Posted:

Nasty! Just damn nasty.

Dax Shepard wrote, directed, and took most of his clothes off for this adaptation of the '70s buddy cop TV series "CHiPs." The first trailer was released last night on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," with Dax as Baker/Beyoncé and Michael Pena as Ponch/Jay Z, and featuring Kristen Bell (going Method as Baker's wife), Vincent D'Onofrio, Maya Rudolph, and Ryan Hansen (also mostly naked).

If you're into yoga pants, "21 Jump Street," slapstick comedy, male bonding, and multiple dick jokes related to male bonding, this is the movie for you! In case the obvious genitalia shots aren't enough, the tagline teases, "Saving the city from dirty cops takes a pair."

Here's the trailer:Dax Shepard told Entertainment Weekly his aim with this film's tone "was somewhere in the 'Bad Boys,' 'Lethal Weapon' world. That was my take on it. It's interesting because it's definitely a comedy, where the show is not, but the stakes are very real and the world is real and the physics are real and all those things are grounded. Insane situations happen but it's not happening in a satire world or a heightened world. It's a very real world."

Despite, or maybe because of, the fourth-grade humor, "CHiPs" seems like good dirty fun, perfect to watch (completely drunk) with your own brainless buddies over the summer. But it's not a summer film, it opens March 24th.

Watch Dax and Pena ride their motorcycles onto the JKL set to introduce the trailer:

Peter Dinklage Eyed for 'Key Role' in 'Avengers: Infinity War'

Posted:

Premiere Of HBO's 'Game Of Thrones' Season 6 - ArrivalsMore wine! "Game of Thrones" star Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) is in early talks for a key role in "Avengers: Infinity War." That's what sources told Variety, and we can only hope that level of awesome achieves reality. Dinklage played the (wonderfully retro) villain in Fox's "X-Men: Days of Future Past" but he would be a newcomer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"Infinity War," which comes out May 4, 2018, will task the Avengers with battling Josh Brolin's Thanos. Other MCU heroes are meant to join the mix -- including Doctor Strange, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Spider-Man -- but Dinklage's role remains a mystery, for now. (Please let him have witty banter with Tony Stark. Please. Please. Please.)

Don't you worry about Tyrion Lannister, though -- more than you would anyway, that is. According to Variety, since the schedule for "Game of Thrones" has moved from a summer start to fall, the actor still has time to go from the third "Avengers" movie (which is expected to shoot early this summer) to the final Season 8 of GoT (which starts shooting in September). However, Variety added that "Production on the seventh season of 'Game of Thrones' recently wrapped," which is not true. The show is filming until the end of February. Maybe they meant Dinklage's role has wrapped for Season 7, which ... well, let's not worry about that yet.

Get Ready for the Most Important Oscar Race Ever

Posted:

If you thought the annual movie awards race exists in a Hollywood bubble, unconnected to the real world, Sunday night's Golden Globes should have changed your mind.

Not just because Meryl Streep and several other stars criticized President-elect Donald Trump -- though the fact that Trump felt compelled to respond shows that the remarks hit the real-life nerve they targeted. But also because of the movies themselves that are defining the contest.

Let's face it, the Academy Awards have always been political, and not just in the junior-high-lunch-table sense of which stars and directors are popular among their Hollywood peers. The Oscars are political because they present to the world the American film industry's idea of what its noblest achievements are. Inevitably, that means that more than just artistic merit comes into play.

For the last couple years, the face of industry achievement that the awards presented was so monochrome that it led to widespread complaints under the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite. As it turned out, the debate in Hollywood mirrored the one the country at large was having about race, privilege, inclusiveness, merit, and opportunity.
This year, judging by the Globes, the awards race will look a lot more like America.

Streep's remarks about Trump got the most attention, but the earlier part of her speech, where she noted that everyone in Hollywood is from somewhere else, and that movies are made by people of all different backgrounds, seems to be this Oscar season's guiding principle. Indeed, even the makers of Best Animated Feature winner "Zootopia" pointed out the pro-diversity message of their movie.

Certainly the nominees and winners on Globes night -- including recognition for "Moonlight," "Hidden Figures," and "Fences" -- suggest that there will be some black faces among the Oscar nominees. White working-class strivers, the sort of people who might have voted for Trump, are represented too, in "Manchester by the Sea." Even the sci-fi drama "Arrival," whose star, Amy Adams, is likely to see her Globes Best Actress nomination echoed at the Oscars, is a parable about immigration and xenophobia.

Whether any of these movies and stars will ultimately score Oscar nominations or trophies, and whether they deserve to, are both still open questions. "Moonlight" may be the most critically acclaimed movie of the year, but it won only Best Drama and lost a much-expected supporting actor award (for nominee Mahershala Ali) to Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the little-seen "Nocturnal Animals." Granted, the tastes of the 90 foreign journalists who pick the Globes aren't necessarily predictive of the tastes of the 6,000 Hollywood insiders who pick the Oscars, but the Globes do influence the conversation. The film's lone victory, in the top category, will be enough to move to the top of voters' screener piles a movie they might otherwise have overlooked.
Similarly, after the Globes, "Manchester's" Casey Affleck is the front-runner for Best Actor, despite all the kudos for Denzel Washington's towering turn in "Fences." Does that mean awards voters have a racial blind spot? Hardly, since "Fences" co-star Viola Davis is also now the front-runner for Supporting Actress.

Then again, the British Academy of Film and Television Award nominations came out on Tuesday, and they look a lot like last year's Oscar nominations. Like the Globes, the BAFTAs snubbed Washington, and they didn't nominate "Moonlight" director Barry Jenkins. They also ignored "Loving" star Ruth Negga, but they did nominate Brit Emily Blunt for "The Girl on the Train" -- a movie and performance that aren't getting any serious awards consideration on this side of the pond. Again, the British Academy's tastes aren't necessarily any indication of the American Academy's, but if Hollywood voters do make similar choices, you can expect to hear grumbling about race and merit.
Arguably, the boldest statement the Globe voters made was giving Best Actress to "Elle" star Isabelle Huppert. After all, foreign-language performances seldom get any recognition at American awards shows. Huppert is one of France's greatest living actresses, but over her four-decade career, she's never been nominated for an Oscar, an oversight that her Globe win will almost certainly correct. Still, what does it mean if Huppert gets nominated and Negga (or, say, "Hidden" star Taraji P. Henson) does not?

Meanwhile, Tuesday also saw the Producers Guild Award nominations, a list that's usually the strongest predictor of the Best Picture Oscar nominations. By and large, they also echo the Globes, even down to the inclusion of "Deadpool," a big hit but also an unconventional awards contender, certainly not a film that prompted thoughts of trophies when it opened last February. The PGA also liked "Arrival," "Fences," "Hacksaw Ridge," "Hell or High Water," "Hidden Figures," "Lion" "Manchester," "Moonlight," and "La La Land." (Oh, and any shot Martin Scorsese's "Silence" may have had is probably kaput now.)

"La La Land," of course, is still the awards-season favorite, especially after sweeping the Globes with a record seven wins. It's also a movie whose white stars (Globe winners Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone) will be top Oscar contenders, and whose dreamy musical numbers and Hollywood setting make it the awards-season movie that seems least relevant to the real-world.
Then again, back during the Depression, politicians used to praise Hollywood for raising the spirits of demoralized Americans with glossy musicals and other escapist entertainment. (Yes, there really was a time politicians praised Hollywood instead of attacking it.)

If the Academy honors "La La Land," a movie that makes audiences feel good at a time of national strife, in part by ignoring that strife, that might be the most political statement of all.
