Is a 'Grey's Anatomy' Doc Leaving? Star Joins New HBO Series Posted: Alan Ball has a new drama series coming to HBO, and a "Grey's Anatomy" star has joined the cast. So ... does that mean we should prepare our goodbyes? According to Deadline, Jerrika Hinton (Dr. Stephanie Edwards on "Grey's") has been cast in Ball's HBO drama about the multi-racial Bishop family, made up of a philosophy professor father (not yet cast), his lawyer wife (Holly Hunter), their three adopted children from Somalia (Hinton), Vietnam (Raymond Lee), and Columbia (Daneil Zovatto), and their one biological child (Sosie Bacon). Hinton's character, Ashley, is the owner of a retail fashion website; a wife; and mother of a 4-year-old. She was born in America to Somalian refugees, and adopted when her mother died and her father was deported. As Deadline added, "Ashley now finds herself feeling part of neither the white or the black experience, and her perfect life is beginning to fray." The site added that Hinton's casting is said to be in a guest-starring capacity for now, since she's still a series regular on "Grey's Anatomy." Hinton has played Stephanie since joining the ABC series in a recurring role in 2012's Season 9. She has been a series regular in the main cast since Season 10. "Grey's Anatomy" Season 13 returns from winter hiatus on Jan. 19. We'll have to stay tuned on if/how Hinton balances both shows. Alan Ball's latest HBO series (after "Six Feet Under" and "True Blood") does not have a title yet, or a full cast, and Deadline did not share any news on a projected premiere date. So there's a decent chance Hinton wouldn't even shoot anything for the new show until after "Grey's" Season 13 was finished anyway. [via: TVLine] Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. Marvel's 'Thor: Ragnarok' Synopsis Teases Hulk Battle & 'Ruthless Hela' Posted: Pity poor Thor. In his third solo film, "Thor: Ragnarok," Chris Hemsworth's alter ego 1) loses his trusty hammer; 2) has to survive a gladiator battle against his buddy the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo); and must save his homeland from the powerful Hela (Cate Blanchett). Sucks for him, but are you not entertained already? Marvel recently released a full synopsis and behind-the-scenes photo of director Taika Waititi and Hemsworth (that's the pic above) to tease the new film, which arrives in November. Here's the synopsis:
The Hulk vs. Thor should be epic, but we're also excited for Cate Blanchett as "the ruthless Hela." Also, Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange is meant to have a fairly significant role in "Thor: Ragnarok," which makes sense considering the post-credits scene of his own movie. "Thor: Ragnarok" opens Nov. 3. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
New 'Walking Dead' Photo: Will Gregory Ruin the Negan War Plans? Posted: But seriously, who cares what Gregory thinks? "The Walking Dead" Season 7 returns in February, and we know Rick Grimes is finally ready to "rise up" and take on Negan. The return promo (see below) shows him talking about getting Alexandria, Hilltop, and the Kingdom to band together, since they all "serve the Saviors," but really don't want to. TVLine shared a new photo from the Season 7 return, and it shows Rick, Maggie, Michonne, Carl, Daryl and Tara wasting time talking to Gregory at Hilltop: They are presumably trying to convince him to join them to fight Negan, but this is Gregory we are talking about. He's sitting there behind his desk with a dang clipboard. This man is not the step-up kind. He's only likely to step up to sell them out. But if they convince him they have the numbers ... that might be the kind of argument Gregory would go for. But seriously -- just take Hilltop from him. Why isn't Jesus running the place anyway? Or Maggie, now that she has moved in? The Season 7 promo, released after the midseason finale, showed Rick talking to Ezekiel, making what we assume is the same pitch -- that the communities have to band together to fight Negan. The Kingdom already showed Richard arguing to Carol and Morgan that they have to rise up against the Saviors, so maybe the Kingdom will be an easier sell, once Rick and the gang show up and explain everything that happened. Carol still doesn't even know about her OG friend Glenn.Do you think Tara will tell Rick about Oceanside, to try and recruit that group's support as well? They asked her not to tell anyone, but... AMC recently shared 14 very cryptic images to tease the second half, so check them out here. Season 7 returns with Episode 9 on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 9 p.m. on AMC. Want more stuff like this? 'Game of Thrones' Season 7 Resumes Filming & Emilia Clarke Looks Semi-Ready Posted: "Game of Thrones" usually finishes filming before a new year begins, but Season 7 is taking advantage of the real-life winter, so it still has about another month left to go. Our beloved khaleesi Emilia Clarke may still be drunk from holiday parties, but by the gods there are Seven Kingdoms to conquer! So she's back in Mother of Dragons mode, (mostly) ready to resume filming. Here's what Emilia posted on Instagram on Friday, showing off her white-blond Daenerys Targaryen wig: You heard it from Mhysa herself, kids: Don't drink and drive dragons! We assume the hoodie comes off for filming ... but you never know. Maybe that's Dany's new look -- an Elsa braid mixed with a Stark grey hood. Watchers on the Wall reports that Clarke was seen yesterday on a flight to Belfast, Northern Ireland, where GoT filming is based. In the past few months, the cast and crew have been all over the place -- including Spain and Croatia -- and we can't wait to see the results on screen. Season 7 will premiere a couple of months later than usual, in the summer rather than the spring, but we're still hoping HBO shows a full trailer relatively soon. Or even just a sneak peek scene from the premiere. Anything! Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
New 'Grey's Anatomy' Promo: Who's Suspended? Who Might Get 30 to Life? Posted: "Grey's Anatomy" "returns with a vengeance," on January 19, ABC warns in its new promo for Season 13, Episode 10, and the goal is clearly to scare the bejeezus out of fans. Some of the shots and quotes are recycled from earlier in the season -- all the better to misdirect us! -- but promo seems to want to convince fans that 1) Bailey (Chandra Wilson) will suspend Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) "effective immediately" and 2) Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) will go to jail, possibly for a long time. Here are some of the promo quotes: Would Alex really get 30 years to life for beating up DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti)? Um. Probably not, even in the worst case scenario. Come on. So who is she talking about? We know the midseason premiere episode, "You Can Look (But You'd Better Not Touch)," will send Bailey, Arizona, and Jo into a maximum security prison to treat a violent teen pregnant girl and her unborn baby. No idea what else might be going on in that episode. The promo shot of those three docs is definitely from Episode 10, but several other images don't seem to be from this episode. This could be one of those standalone bottle eps purely following the maximum security team, and not really addressing the cliffhanger questions. Check out some photos from the episode, and Jessica Capshaw's take on shooting the "creepy" scenes. Watch it play out Thursday, Jan. 19 on ABC. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. 'The Missing' Season 2 Trailer Introduces Gripping New Mystery Posted: On "The Missing," losing a child is a heartbreaking tragedy. But finding her again doesn't magically make everything right again. Starz released the trailer for season 2 of its crime drama, and it introduces a new case with new characters. The only holdover from the first season is the grizzled veteran detective Julien Baptiste (Tchéky Karyo), who investigated the disappearance of a French girl named Sophie Giroux over a decade prior. Then, a British girl named Alice Webster is recovered, much to the relief of parents Sam (David Morrissey) and Gemma (Keeley Hawes). Alice claims to have been held captive with Sophie, but as Baptiste soon discovers, there's more to her story than it seems. Like the first season, this one jumps back and forth in time, between 2014 (when Alice is found) to the present time. And this time, in his quest to discover the truth, Baptiste travels far and wide, to Germany and Iraq. The eight-episode second season has already aired in the U.K. and premieres Feb. 12 on Starz. 'This Is Us,' Other Shows Move Due to President Obama's Farewell Address Posted: President Barack Obama will make a farewell address to nation Tuesday, and the speech is causing ripple effects across the networks' schedules. The address will air at 9 p.m. on all three major broadcast networks. In response, NBC is pushing back the return of its hit new drama "This Is Us" from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Eastern and Central time zones, so that viewers won't have to miss or record it. That means we'll all find out Toby's fate by the end of the evening. An encore episode of new game show "The Wall" will air and be joined in progress when the address is over, at 9:40 p.m. On the West Coast, "This Is Us" will air the same episode back-to-back in both time slots. CBS, meanwhile, chose to pull a new episode of "Bull" and will air a repeat of the season 9 finale of "The Big Bang Theory." ABC pushed back "Fresh Off the Boat" from its usual 9 p.m. time to after the speech. Want more stuff like this? Jason Momoa Gets Savage in Netflix's 'Frontier' Trailer Posted: Khal Drogo of "Game of Thrones" and "Frontier's" Declan Harp have something in common. Aside from being played by the same actor, Jason Momoa, they are both considered "savage" warriors by "civilized" agents who want to stop them at all costs. Netflix debuted the trailer for its Canadian-made period drama "Frontier," set during the late 1700s. Momoa's Declan Harp is a half-Irish, half-Native American outlaw who battles the greedy traders who hold a monopoly on the fur trade. Those traders, meanwhile, plan to wipe Harp and his compatriots out. It's a brutal world where "business negotiations might be resolved with close-quarter hatchet fights," as the official synopsis explains. And as one character says of Harp, "He's an animal. Killing him is not enough. You must make an example of him. You must make him suffer." All six episodes of "Frontier" season 1 will begin streaming Jan. 20 on Netflix. Want more stuff like this? Veteran Indian Actor Om Puri Dead at Age 66 Posted: Om Puri, a veteran Indian actor who appeared in many Western and Bollywood movies, died Friday at the age of 66 in the city of Mumbai. His friend, actor Anupam Kher, told Reuters that Puri passed away after a cardiac arrest. Over three decades, Puri won international awards for roles in acclaimed Indian, British, and American films. He began his career in the early '80s with roles in Indian art films like "Bhavni Bhavai" and "Ardh Satya." Puri made a name for himself with British audiences in the 1999 comedy "East Is East," as a Pakistani immigrant struggling to understand his second-generation children. He also appeared in "Gandhi," "City of Joy," "Charlie Wilson's War," and most recently, opposite Helen Mirren in "The Hundred-Foot Journey." Puri was made an honorary officer of the Order of the British Empire for his contribution to British cinema in 2004. Want more stuff like this? Ariel Is Returning to 'Once Upon a Time' to Team With Princess Jasmine Posted: A beloved Disney princess is returning to ABC's fairy tale series "Once Upon a Time," with JoAnna Garcia Swisher set to reprise her role as Ariel. Entertainment Weekly has the scoop that Garcia Swisher will be back for the first time in two seasons, and this time around, she'll get to team up with another iconic Disney princess. Here's the breakdown of her return, per EW:
Garcia Swisher was especially excited about the prospect of working alongside David/Jasmine, writing on Twitter that she was in "princess heaven." David responded in kind, sending love to Garcia Swisher and using the hashtag #GirlPower to express her excitement about the upcoming storyline.
As EW's report noted, Garcia Swisher will be back "for at least one episode," so it's likely she could be sticking around for a lot longer than that. "Once Upon a Time" fans will find out for themselves when the show returns from its winter hiatus sometime in March. The Bellas Are Back! Anna Kendrick Shares 'Pitch Perfect 3' Cast Photo Posted: Production on "Pitch Perfect 3" is officially underway, and the members of the Barden Bellas are just as excited for the new flick as fans of the surprise hit series, sharing a cast photo from the shoot. Star Anna Kendrick, who plays Beca in the a cappella franchise, posted the group snap to her Instagram account, featuring the core characters from the flicks all smiles as they gear up for the threequel. Pictured in the photo -- some of them triumphantly holding up three fingers -- are actresses Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp, Brittany Snow, Chrissie Fit, Shelley Regner, Ester Dean, Hana Mae Lee, and Kelley Jakle. While the "Pitch Perfect" series became an unlikely hit after bowing in 2012 -- the 2015 sequel, "Pitch Perfect 2," went on to gross more than double the first film's haul, making a third flick a no-brainer -- it's had a bit of a bumpy ride lately. First, "PP2" helmer Elizabeth Banks was set to return to the director's chair, but a release date change caused some scheduling issues, and Banks eventually bailed on the job. Then, after a production delay caused by Banks's departure, the release date changed again. Director Trish Sie ("Step Up: All In") eventually took over directing duties in September, putting the flick back on track. With Sie in place and the cast assembled, it looks like it's finally full steam ahead for "PP3." We're aca-excited to see what's in store for the Bellas this time around. "Pitch Perfect 3" opens on December 22. [via: Anna Kendrick] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Hayden Panettiere Opens Up About Postpartum Depression: 'It's Okay to Ask for Help' Posted: When Hayden Panettiere gave birth to her daughter, Kaya, two years ago, she had no idea that she'd soon be struggling with postpartum depression. It took the "Nashville" actress some time to even realize what was happening to her, she revealed in a recent interview, and now, she's opening up even more about the experience. During an appearance on "Good Morning America" this week, Panettiere talked about how she figured out something was wrong ("You feel off, you don't feel like yourself," she explained), and a large part of that had to do with her "Nashville" character, Juliette Barnes, who was also coincidentally dealing with postpartum depression. The actress had to take a leave of absence from the show in late 2015 while seeking treatment for her own depression, and in 2016, sought treatment for a second time. According to Panettiere, playing Juliette's own struggle "absolutely" helped her deal with her own issues. "I think it helped me identify what was going on," she said. "And to let women know that it's okay to ask for help and it's okay to have a moment of weakness. It doesn't make you a bad person, doesn't make you a bad mother. It makes you a very strong, resilient woman. You've just got to let it make you stronger." The actress says that that's certainly the case for her, and it also helped improve her relationship with her daughter. "I think I'm a better mom because of it," she explained, "because you never take that connection for granted." Now, Panettiere is back playing Juliette once more, and as she gears up for the rest of season five (which just had its debut on new network CMT), she sees even more parallels between herself and her onscreen alter ego. "She crashes and burns and then she rises from the ashes, and she always takes the lesson and becomes stronger for it," the actress said. "We have that in common, I think." Broadway to Dim the Lights in Honor of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds Posted: As is tradition when a celebrated actor or actress from the stage passes away, the theaters of Broadway will dim their lights on Friday night in tribute to the late Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds. Marquees of the theaters along the famous New York City street will be dimmed for one minute beginning at 7:45 p.m. EST on Friday in memory of the mother-daughter duo, who died last week within one day of each other. Fisher, 60, suffered a heart attack on December 23 and passed away on December 27, and Reynolds, 84, had a stroke on December 28, and passed away later that day. While both women are perhaps best known for their formidable careers in Hollywood, starring in iconic flicks including "Singin' in the Rain" and "Star Wars," they also made their mark on the Great White Way. They made their Broadway debuts alongside each other in a 1973 revival of "Irene," for which Reynolds was nominated for a Tony. Reynolds went on to star in "Woman of the Year" and the musical revue "Debbie," and also appeared in the U.S. tours of "Annie Get Your Gun" and "The Unsinkable Molly Brown." Fisher appeared in "Agnes Of God" and "Censored Scenes From King Kong," and later wrote and starred in a one-woman show, "Wishful Drinking," which later became a bestselling book and an HBO documentary. The Broadway tribute is just the latest public display of mourning for pair, with "Star Wars" fans coming together to hold lightsaber vigils for Fisher, and a large public memorial featuring stars like Meryl Streep planned for the mother and daughter sometime in the near future. Adria Arjona Was Fated to Play the Oz-Kicking Dorothy of 'Emerald City' Posted: There's a new Dorothy in town and she doesn't need ruby slippers to do kick some Oz. Adria Arjona -- most recently seen in episodes of "True Detective" and "Person of Interest" and soon to appear in the kaiju-powered sequel "Pacific Rim: Uprising" -- is the latest in a long line of actresses, from Judy Garland and Diana Ross to Lea Michele and Teri Reeves -- to inhabit author L. Frank Baum's literary heroine on screen, this time for NBC's ambitious, action-packed adaptation "Emerald City," which amps up the darker fantasy elements in a "Game of Thrones"-ian vein. The series reimagines its Dorothy as a tough, capable Latina nurse who's emotionally hamstrung by some family issues. What she does have in common with the more familiar take on the character is how she's swept away by a violent storm and finds herself in a very strange land where she encounters its even odder -- and often more dangerous -- inhabitants. And, as Arjona explains to Moviefone, it's a role she almost never considered herself playing -- but a childhood memory suggests it may have been her destiny. Moviefone: What did you think of the concept when it was brought to you, figuring out exactly what you'd be doing and how you'd prepare to go in and build a brand-new Dorothy? Adria Arjona: I completely went the opposite way. I read it, and I thought to myself, "This is such wonderful material. It's so cool. But now, let's be realistic. I'm never going to be Dorothy." It was just so far away from me. I couldn't really figure it out. I was just like, there's no way. Then I decided, "You know what? No. That's not the way I should be thinking. Anyone can be anything, especially today, and I want to be a firm believer that you can." So I went in there and prepared as much as I could. I just went in there and I had fun. And then I flew to Miami. NBC flew me back to LA and tested me. Then I got it. Honestly, I could not believe it. I remember it perfectly: I was at a sushi restaurant having chocolate soufflé, while crying, speaking to my manager like, "I'm Dorothy." Obviously, you had this script to start with, but how much extra homework did you do? Did you look at the L. Frank Baum books? I looked at the books, yeah. I didn't look at the movie. I love the movie so much, and I love Judy Garland so much, I just didn't want to fall into any sort of imitation or anything. These scripts are so different from the movie. I think the books do it more justice. So I went into the books. It was wonderful, because I got to see so many of the characters that I was seeing in the script in the books itself. So that was a really good correlation. The books are a lot darker as well, and I think informed me a little bit more. I just did a lot of physical work for the role. I worked with Tarsem, worked with these two wonderful people, David and Shaun, to create this character and make it dimensional, and make her real, and grounded, and human, and relatable. I take the audience on this journey, and I just want to be their friend. Tell me what you like about your Dorothy that's different from any other Dorothy that we've seen before. And the things that are consistent with the meta-Dorothy? I think Dorothy's always going to be this girl who has a huge heart, and who always thinks of others, and always wants to help us. She's almost like a fixer. In the books, in the movie, in anything. This Dorothy, I think goes from being an insecure young girl who is unsure of what her future might bring her, to thanks to this world, becoming a powerful woman who is very secure of herself in her own skin. I just hope that people go on this journey with it. I don't think I've seen that before. It's not being tough. It's not being feisty. It's not being a hero. It's owning your own skill and knowing what you're capable of, and not being afraid to show it. It's a very physical role for you. Tell me what was cool, skill-wise, to learn and master for the part. Oh, my God -- I did so many things! I remember, we did stunt training: I kid you not, I'm a pro at roly-polies. They made us do so much, because, apparently, it would stretch your spine. I'm a pro. We did a lot of wire work, which I'd never done. They put you up on these wires and they kind of hook you here, and you're suspended probably, like, 10 feet up from the ground, and it's for when the witches torture me. So you have to do all this choreography that takes a while. It's not very comfortable, but I love all that kind of stuff. I also did horseback riding. We did a lot of physical training just to keep me in shape throughout the entire show and not just crumble in the middle. The only thing we didn't do is a lot of driving, because the second I had my first driving lesson, the teacher actually got afraid and told me he didn't want anymore. I was like, "Wait, I don't understand ..." I was like, "I'm Mexican. I can drive. I grew up in Mexico City. I can drive." He's like, "No no no, you can drive, you can drive, you can drive, you can drive -- just get me out! Get me out!" So he got out of the car. How did you bond with your Toto? Did you have an instant rapport with the German Shepherd? Yes. I had a really good bond, which is a problem, with one of the dogs. And Oliver [Jackson-Cohen] had a bond with the other dog. The problem was that, his dog, Rocky, only spoke Hungarian. We use him so much. I kid you not. I didn't know how I made the dog do what he did. I would just make up words. I was like, [spews unintelligible commands] "Just freaking do what I'm telling you to do!" Sometimes it worked. We'd have to feed him and give him food while we were filming. He only spoke Hungarian. The horses also only spoke Hungarian. So I did so great with Toto, because I loved him off set -- but while we were working, it was just so hard. You have to memorize lines, the choreography of the scene itself, where the cameras are, and plus a dog that doesn't want to listen to you. All he did was hump! Dorothy's traditionally a hugely popular Halloween costume. Did you ever dress up as Dorothy before in your life? I did. When I was little I did. I had the wig and the two little pigtails. I dressed up as a poppy as well. I used to dance ballet, and I was a poppy in the "Wizard of Oz" show. So I had that costume, so I was that for another Halloween. So you were being prepared for your destiny? Yes. It's so weird. My mom keeps reminding me of that. I had completely forgotten about that. "Oh sh*t, I was in the 'Wizard of Oz' musical." Just as a dancer, obviously -- not as a singer. Those photos will be on the internet soon enough. Yeah, and my mom will be the one posting them, by the way. She'll be the first one. Where were you as far as your fandom of this particular fantasy genre? Were you into "Game of Thrones," "Lord of the Rings," and all the great genre material we've had, especially over the past 15 years? Or was it a new thing for you? I think it was a new thing for me. I'm a big documentary fan. I love indie films and dramas. But, obviously, I'm a huge "Lord of the Rings" fan, "Harry Potter," all of those are just so magical. What you're asking is if I like them? I love them. But I never imagined myself in one of them. And now that I am in one of them, I still can't believe it. Until January 6th, I'm going to think all of this is fake! What was your favorite day on set? That's so hard. That is so hard. There were so many, honestly. So many! I think about it and I have like a huge smile on my face. The mud pit, the Prison of the Abject, was a blast, which is where they throw mud at us -- and it's real mud! You have about five pounds of mud on top of you, and you have to contort and stuff. That was a lot of fun. There were a bunch of extras, and all we would do is mud fights between takes. Was there an element to the role, or something you had to do, where you were like, "I didn't know I was signing up for this?" No. I was pretty much on the contrary. I was like, "No -- sign me up for that!" "I'll do this, instead of the stuntwoman?" Oh yeah. That was my biggest fight. I would constantly make, like, little baby tantrums at [director/executive producer] Tarsem for him to make me do the stunt. Because, a lot of the time, you obviously want to be protected. He needed me to be useful for eight months. And sometimes he's like, "You can't do it. You can't do it." And I would get so upset, because I just wanted to be in everything. I pretty much was. My stunt double didn't work much. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
