New 'Sherlock' Season 4 Villain Is the Worst Yet, Says Martin Freeman Posted: If you thought past "Sherlock" villains were bad, brace yourself for an even more awful one to pop up in Season 4, Episode 2. PBS released a new video Tuesday in which cast member Martin Freeman (Dr. John Watson), writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, and producer Sue Vertue open up about Culverton Smith, the new villain played by Toby Jones. They don't beat around the bush: They refer to him as him "absolutely harrowing" and "the worst person in London," among other intriguing descriptors. Freeman even compares him to previous twisted baddie Moriarty (Andrew Scott) and rates Smith as more "horrible," believe it or not. Apparently, Jones pulled off his villainous performance in an interesting way. According to Vertue, he stayed in character between takes -- a method that was "unnerving," she says in the video. Whatever works, though, right? Listen to Freeman, Moffat, and Vertue's takes on the new "Sherlock" villain below. "Sherlock" Season 4, Episode 2 airs on Jan. 8 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on PBS. More 'Nashville': CMT to Premiere Live Aftershow 'Nashchat' Posted: CMT and Hulu rescued "Nashville" from cancellation over the summer, and now with the show's premiere on its new home comes the launch of a live social media aftershow. CMT unveiled plans for "Nashchat," Deadline reports, which will debut on Facebook Live on Jan. 5 via the network's Facebook Page. Each episode of the companion series will be filmed in a Nashville living room and hosted by country radio personality Amy Brown. The first will come immediately following the two-hour Season 5 premiere. "Nashchat" will help fans feed their show addiction by offering original music, recaps from "Nashville" insiders and fans alike, and cast and crew interviews. Chris Carmack, who plays Will Lexington, will kick things off in the first show. The drama series' stars include Connie Britton, Hayden Panettiere, Clare Bowen, Charles Esten, Jonathan Jackson, Sam Palladio, and sisters Maisy and Lennon Stella, so we could see any of them in future weeks. The aftershow is just part of CMT's social media strategy. In addition to the Facebook Live chat, the network will post behind-the-scenes photos and clips on Instagram, Instagram Live, Snapchat, and Twitter. Followers will also get to see fan content, participate in games and contests, and check out the latest memes, promos, and more. That opens doors for a whole lot of obsessing. Let's see if a bigger "Nashville" social presence means a bigger audience. The drama series returns Jan. 5 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Watch Carrie Fisher's Best Moments on 'Ellen' in Hilarious, Touching Tribute Posted: In case you weren't already aware, actress Carrie Fisher was one of a kind. That fact is on full display in a new tribute from Ellen DeGeneres. The comedian and talk show host honored her late friend by showing some of her favorite moments from Fisher's visits to her show over the years. The two clearly had some fun times together, from giving out "Star Wars" tickets to random passersby to joking about how Fisher lived next door to her mother, Hollywood icon Debbie Reynolds. Hard as it is to watch knowing that Fisher and Reynolds recently both died within a day of one another, the video is as hilarious as it is touching. "I loved when she was here," DeGeneres told viewers. "She made me laugh so hard. She was smart, she was funny, she was hilariously honest about herself and the world around her." Case in point? The footage below. RIP, Carrie and Debbie. [via: "The Ellen Show"/YouTube This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Predator' Reboot Adds 'Moonlight' Star Trevante Rhodes to Cast Posted: Key details about Fox's "Predator" reboot are still few and far between at this point, but one more has just been revealed: "Moonlight" star Trevante Rhodes has boarded the project. The actor joins a cast led by Boyd Holbrook, according to Variety. Rhodes's character will reportedly be the best friend of the one played by Holbrook. Unfortunately, that doesn't give us much to go on in determining what that means for the plot as details are still under wraps. Whatever his part in the reboot, Rhodes comes to the film fresh off the critical success of "Moonlight." As the adult version of drug dealer Chiron, he pulled off a breakout performance. The drama has earned multiple Golden Globe nominations and is expected to be an Oscar contender as well. Rhodes is also slated to star in the upcoming drama "Song to Song," starring Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender, and Natalie Portman. Meanwhile, "Predator" will continue the sci-fi horror film series that kicked off in 1987. Directed by Shane Black, the reboot is slated to open on Feb. 9, 2018. 'This Is Us' Star Sterling K. Brown Joins Marvel's 'Black Panther' Posted: The mega-watt talent of the cast of Marvel's forthcoming "Black Panther" movie just keeps getting brighter, with Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown officially joining the ensemble. Marvel announced the new addition to the cast on its website, revealing that Brown would be playing a character named N'Jobu, described as "a figure from T'Challa aka Black Panther's past." The mysterious N'Jobu doesn't appear to have any connection to the comics, but his name could also be a pseudonym for another "Black Panther" character. Brown has been on a hot streak lately, taking home an Emmy in September for his work as prosecutor Christopher Darden in "The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story," and earning multiple other awards nominations for that role from the likes of the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild, and the NAACP Image Awards. Those latter two groups also nominated him for his work as one of the stars of buzzy NBC hit drama "This Is Us." But "Panther" will be Brown's most high-profile role to date, and he's in some excellent company, which he acknowledged in a tweet, calling his costars "immensely talented."
The actor joins Chadwick Boseman, who plays the titular hero, alias T'Challa; Angela Bassett as T'Challa's mother, Ramonda; Michael B. Jordan as villain Erik Killmonger; Oscar winner Forest Whitaker in a yet-to-be-determined role; Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o as Nakia, a member of the all-female Dora Milaje royal guard and a love interest for T'Challa; Danai Gurira as Okoye, the leader of the Dora Milaje; Daniel Kaluuya; Winston Duke; and Florence Kasumba. With such a great group assembled, "Black Panther" is not to be missed. It will hit theaters on February 16, 2018. [via: Marvel] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Star Wars' Still Determining Leia's Future After Carrie Fisher's Death Posted: WARNING: This post contains some minor spoilers for "Star Wars: Episode VIII," "Episode IX," and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." Read on at your own risk. In the aftermath of the sudden death of "Star Wars" star Carrie Fisher last month, the creative team behind the franchise is still unsure of how to proceed with plans for her iconic character, Princess-turned-General Leia. And according to a new report, Fisher was to have featured prominently in at least two crucial scenes set for "Episode VIII" and "Episode IX," with the latter, still-unfilmed movie having more importance for the character. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fisher's death is not only a devastating personal blow to her "Star Wars" family, but also throws some key plot points for the next two films in the new trilogy into chaos. Fisher had already completed work on "Episode VIII," and while it was initially unclear how she would have factored into "Episode IX," THR reports that her role in the latter flick was planned to be much more substantial than that in "VIII." ... [I]nsiders tell The Hollywood Reporter that at least two key scenes are planned for Episode VIII (Dec. 15) and Episode IX (2019): a Leia reunion with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and a confrontation with Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), her son who killed Harrison Ford's Han Solo in 2015's The Force Awakens. Details of where those scenes fit into the movies remain unclear. Obviously, if Leia was to have had a big part in "Episode IX," that would require some major rewriting, and THR reports that director Colin Trevorrow is set to meet with Lucasfilm execs next week to discuss a plan for the character moving forward. But the trade also notes that unlike the situation surrounding the sudden death of Paul Walker while filming "Furious 7" in 2013, production on "Episode IX" is still a long way off (filming is likely set to begin sometime in early 2018), and filmmakers have some time to come up with a new game plan.m One potential answer is including Leia in "Episode IX" through the magic of CGI. The character already made an altered appearance in "Rogue One" (alongside the also-deceased Peter Cushing) thanks to some digital trickery; could a similar feat be planned for future "Wars" flicks? That's yet to be determined, and we likely won't know the answer for some time. Stay tuned. [via: The Hollywood Reporter] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
A 'Charmed' Reboot Is Coming to The CW Posted: The CW is hoping to conjure up some late '90s/early 2000s nostalgia, with reports swirling that "Charmed" is getting a reboot from the network. Jennie Snyder Urman, the creator and executive producer of The CW's "Jane the Virgin," is writing the project, and working with several other "Jane" creatives on shepherding the new series. The network has already ordered a script for the hour-long reboot. The new show will be a prequel of sorts, set in 1976, though additional details about the plot -- and the show's connection, or lack thereof, to the original -- are scant right now. Variety calls the series "a re-imagining of the original TV series," while TVLine reports that the reboot follows "three witches who are brought together to fight evil in a small New England town." TVLine also obtained a reported breakdown of unofficial character descriptions for the main trio, with a more diverse cast than the first "Charmed." It's unclear if the characters are supposed to be related, as they were in the original series. "Charmed" first ran on The WB (which later merged with UPN to form The CW) for eight seasons, from 1998 through 2006. Its main cast was initially made up of Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, and Alyssa Milano, who starred as Prue, Piper, and Phoebe Halliwell, a trio of good witches. Doherty left the series in 2001, and was later replaced by Rose McGowan, who played half-sister Paige. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Golden Globes 2017: Who Will (and Should) Win This Year Posted: It can be tough predicting the whims of the 90 or so journalists in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association who pick the Golden Globe winners. About all we can know for sure about this Sunday's Globe ceremony is that Meryl Streep will be accepting a prize (the HFPA's Cecil B. DeMille career achievement trophy) with her usual grace and humor. Beyond that, though, we can guess pretty safely who'll win in the following major categories. And we can also grumble about who actually deserves to win. BEST PICTURE - DRAMA They're all worthy movies, but this is a two-film race between "Moonlight" (about the coming-of-age of an African-American young man in a drug-blighted Miami project) and "Manchester by the Sea" (a family drama about a bereft Irish-American man in Massachusetts picking up the pieces after his brother's death). Who Will Win: "Manchester" has five Globe nominations, and "Moonlight" has six, but "Manchester" has the edge -- a better-known cast (featuring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams), and more impressive box office (about $30 million to date, compared to $13 million for "Moonlight"). And while it shouldn't matter, the fact that "Moonlight" is about a character who's poor, black, and gay could make it less relatable to Globe voters. Who Should Win: Both films are shattering experiences, but "Moonlight" feels like something utterly new to the screen, and despite its often bleak subject matter, it has lyricism and poetry to burn. BEST PICTURE - COMEDY/MUSICAL This year, however, the category includes Academy front-runner "La La Land," as well as "Florence Foster Jenkins," which could mark the 892nd Oscar nomination for Meryl Streep. It's nice to see "Deadpool" recognized, and it would be great if the nominations for musical "Sing Street" and family dramedy "20th Century Women" brought more attention to those two underseen films. Who Will Win: This race is "La La Land's" to lose. It's the year's most nominated film, and as a valentine to Los Angeles and show business, it literally hits the HFPA members right where they live. Who Should Win: "La La Land." Critics and viewers alike have been swooning over it for a reason. BEST ACTOR - DRAMA Who Will Win: Affleck's performance is more likely to impress voters, if only because it's no surprise to see awards magnet Washington deliver greatness. Affleck's subtle turn is the star-making role that Ben's little brother has been waiting two decades for, and Globe voters will relish the opportunity to be the first major awards group to crown him. Who's Should Win: Washington the director doesn't do the best job showcasing the work of Washington the actor, but this is still a performance for the ages. BEST ACTRESS - DRAMA Who Will Win: Portman is all but assured of a win for her portrayal of a grief-stricken Jackie Kennedy. Who Should Win: Huppert has been a leading light in French cinema for four decades. It would be great to see her honored for what many critics think is a career-milestone performance, especially over Portman's sometimes frustratingly opaque Jackie. BEST DIRECTOR Who Will Win: Chazelle, both for his grandly ambitious project and for the technical feat of actually pulling it off most of the time. Who Should Win: Jenkins, for pulling off an even more unconventional storytelling coup. BEST TV SERIES, DRAMA Who Will Win: "This Is Us" may be the buzziest show on TV right now, but since the HFPA is the group that nominated "Downton Abbey" 11 times and gave it three trophies, "The Crown" has the edge. Who Should Win: Don't you want to see the "Stranger Things" kids do more at an awards show than pass out sandwiches? BEST TV SERIES, COMEDY Who Will Win: "Atlanta" is the lone new series on the list, so it has a slight edge. Who Should Win: "Atlanta" also is one of the year's best new shows, full of subtlety and lived-in wisdom and rewarding repeat viewings. Hot Movies of 2017, Hello 'Bye Bye Man': CAN'T WAIT! Podcast Ep. 8 Posted: Say hello to "The Bye Bye Man." This week on CAN'T WAIT!, Tim Hayne, Tony Maccio, and Rachel Horner (we're not sure what happened to Phil Pirrello, but we have to believe it's "Star Trek"-related) take a stab at listing all the movies they can wait to see in 2017. It's a lengthy list, because 2017 is, apparently, the year every studio decided to release their biggest tentpoles. Let's hope they left something for 2018. What could get better than talking about the movies coming out in 2017? How about talking to someone who's starring in two of them! Doug Jones, star of "The Bye Bye Man" (in theaters Friday, January 13th) joins us in-studio to talk about his titular role in the horror movie ... but we couldn't stop there. We chatted him up about his latest collaboration with writer/director Guillermo del Toro, "The Shape of Water"; his experience making the now-classic, then-flop "Hocus Pocus" (he played undead Billy Butcherson, in case you needed your memory jogged), his role as lead Gentleman in one of the most beloved episodes of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" ever, "Hush"; and so much more. Also, as promised, here's "There's Love: A Doug Jones Documentary," in full, as mentioned by Jones himself (we're still hunting down that Southwest Airlines commercial). We also introduce a new segment called First Things Last, in which we ask guests about some important firsts in their lives. You tell us if you like it. Per usual, we end the episode with a few recommendations to keep you busy until next time. CAN'T WAIT! A Movie Lover's Podcast Episode 8Here's the rundown:

Alexis Bledel Joins Hulu's 'The Handmaid's Tale' as Lesbian Ofglen: Report Posted: Alexis Bledel is ditching Rory Gilmore for a "Mad Men" reunion. The "Gilmore Girls" star was just announced for a major role in Hulu's upcoming adaptation of Margaret Atwood's dystopian novel "The Handmaid's Tale." Elisabeth Moss (Peggy Olson for life) leads the series as handmaid Offred, who tries to navigate her way through this totalitarian society. According to TVLine, Bledel "will play the recurring role of Ofglen, Offred's fellow Handmaid and companion. At first, Ofglen seems like a pious rule-follower, loyal to the oppressive Gilead system, but she turns out to be daring and subversive. Fun additional fact free of charge: Bledel's character is also a lesbian." That's a promo shot of Bledel's Ofglen above. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bledel will appear in more than half of the episodes with an option to return in the yet-to-be announced Season 2. In this patriarchal world, young and fertile woman are classified as "handmaids" for reproductive purposes, forced to sleep with men to bear children, which is certainly bad enough for heterosexual women. In Atwood's book, Ofglen's preferred sexual orientation is not made clear, but it is clear that she is a rebel. Moss and Bledel worked together on "Mad Men," which is where Bledel met her now-husband Vincent Kartheiser. Moss told THR casting Bledel was "a happy coincidence."
The 10-episode series co-stars Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Max Minghella, Ann Dowd, Samira Wiley, and Madeline Brewer, and premieres April 26 on Hulu. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Meet the 'Cars 3' Villain & Lightning McQueen's New Trainer Posted: Pixar's first "Cars" movie came out 11 years ago, so it makes sense for "Cars 3" to flip the script and now show one-time rookie Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) as the struggling veteran of the track. Entertainment Weekly just shared new photos and details on "Cars 3," emphasizing the generation gap story of "mobile millennials vs. mid-size cars with midlife crises." However, despite the new villain being an entitled Millennial -- voiced by Armie Hammer -- the new hero is also a Millennial -- voiced by Cristela Alonzo.
Director Brian Fee shared his take on villain Jackson Storm, leader of the new wave of tech-savvy vehicles: "Jackson was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Everything comes easy to him, and everything about him says he's faster, so much so that we've designed him so that even when he's standing next to McQueen, McQueen looks old. [...] He thinks the world is his. He's taking over. He's owed it. [...] He thinks the future of racing and the high-tech ways they train and what they can do means they're taking the sport to a new level, and the older guys had their day, and it's done, and they have no place in the future of racing." If that sounds like the ultimate Millennial cliché, fear not. Because we also have.... CRUZ RAMIREZ Ramirez is Lightning McQueen's new trainer. She's young, like Jackson, but a lifelong fan of McQueen, described as "optimistic, sunny, fierce, and friendly." Fee added, "Whereas others like Jackson would look at McQueen and dump him, Cruz isn't like that at all. She's the most optimistic person in the world and wants to do anything to help." "Cars 3" is scheduled for release June 16. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Harrison Ford Met the New Han Solo for Lunch & a Fan Papped Them Posted: Old Solo recently met Young Solo over lunch in Santa Monica, and the Twitterverse went into carbonite arrest. Alden Ehrenreich is taking on the role of young Han Solo in the upcoming "Star Wars" standalone film, and he sat down with OG Han Solo Harrison Ford, presumably to cover Scoundrel 101. A fan shared a blurry photo -- through a restaurant window -- of the two actors talking, and shared it on Twitter:
The Han Solo solo movie co-stars Donald Glover as young Lando, with Emilia Clarke as whoever she's playing, and Woody Harrelson possibly playing Han's early mentor. The movie will show up in 2018. Fans Petition for Leia to Be Made an 'Official Disney Princess' Posted: Come on, Disney, don't be a scruffy looking nerf-herder! To honor the late Carrie Fisher, thousands of "Star Wars" fans have signed a petition to the Walt Disney Company requesting Princess Leia be made an official Disney princess. So far, the Change.org petition has about 33,000 signatures. Here's the pitch:
The petition creator, Cody Christensen of Cedar City, Utah, told Geek Exchange he has five daughters, and there are constantly princess movies playing in the background. "We are big fans of the current princess line-up, but I think that Leia is a really strong, positive, awesome role model for my girls, and she would make a great addition." He said he started the petition because it had been bothering him since Disney bought Lucasfilm that Disney had all of these official princesses but they did not include Leia. "Then I found out that Disney had set rules for who could and couldn't be a princess. With Carrie's death, I think that it's time to change the rules." Look at this father with his princess cause! It may not change the world, but his daughters must be proud. According to CBS News, since 2000, Disney princesses have been their own franchises, "marketed separately from the films that spawned them. Not every princess from a Disney film or TV show is an official member of the princess franchise." It sounds like such a clique. Disney has yet to officially respond to the petition. But Leia totally deserves her own planet/spaceship/castle at Disney World, so they should just starting building something now. [via: Geek Exchange, Time] Want more stuff like this? 'Girl Meets World' Is Canceled: Read Rowan Blanchard's Letter to Fans Posted: Girl meetings ending. The writers for the Disney Channel's "Girl Meets World" have confirmed that the series has been canceled after three seasons, and lead actress Rowan Blanchard, 15, posted a heartfelt letter on Twitter in response to the news. "Girl Meets World" ending is not a shock, since Rider Strong (Shawn Hunter) recently mentioned on his podcast that "the show ended." But the writers responded to that at the time by joking on Twitter, "As much as I love Shawn Hunter, having created his character and everything, you have to remember that he was wrong a lot. There is no official word as yet. Disney decision on season 4 coming soon. Officially, season 3 ends with 3 wonderful episodes in January." That was then. This is now:
C'est tout for the spinoff of the '90s sitcom "Boy Meets World," which brought back Ben Savage as Cory, and Danielle Fishel as Topanga Matthews, but focused on their daughter Riley (Rowan Blanchard). The gifted teen star took to Twitter to post a beautiful, bittersweet note on the show's end: — Rowan Blanchard (@RowanBlanchard) January 5, 2017 Her co-star Sabrina Carpenter (Maya) also reacted on Twitter:
According to Entertainment Weekly, the final episodes of "Girl Meets World" air Friday, and Jan. 13 and Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. ET on the Disney Channel. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
