DVD Obscura: The New Indie and International Movies You Need to Watch Posted: 12 Jan 2017 09:00 PM PST New Indie High on my list of “Great 2016 Movies You May Well Have Missed” is the sparkling Southside with You (Lionsgate/Miramax), a film that’s right up there in my book with Richard Linklater’s “Before” trilogy when it comes to great walking-and-talking romances. While the film’s hook – Barack Obama and Michelle Robertson go on a first date – is no doubt what helped it get made, this is by no means a movie that relies solely upon its gimmick. Ultimately, it’s the story of two sexy, intelligent people getting to know one another, dancing around each other a bit, and eventually realizing that they’re made for each other. Tika Sumpter and Parker Sawyers give effervescent performances as Michelle and Barack, touching... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Musical Bites: New 'Moana' Short Film and Song, 'La La Land' May Be Heading to Broadway Posted: 12 Jan 2017 07:30 PM PST Two of the most popular movies out right now are musicals, and there's more to come from both of them! See the latest updates on Moana and La La Land below. New Moana Short and Song Disney's latest animated feature is one of their best in years, and it's also a fine musical with catchy songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Opetaia Foa'i. If you've seen it and fallen in love with the title character, voiced by newcomer Auli'i Cravalho, and her demigod traveling companion, Maui, voiced by Dwayne Johnson, then you probably already have the soundtrack and will be picking up the Blu-ray when it comes out. That's a good idea, because the home video release will include a bunch of deleted scenes plus a new "mini-movie"... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Hypnotic 'Raw' Trailer Hints At the Bloody Delights of the Festival Favorite Horror Movie Posted: 12 Jan 2017 06:00 PM PST If you don't like being surprised and the sight of blood has you covering your eyes, you should avoid horror movies as a general rule. And you should steer very, very wide of Raw, a new horror movie that was a big hit on the 2016 film festival circuit. Oh, and sorry about the image above, but, hey, the headline probably should have been enough of a warning of what was in this post. If, however, you're up for of the bloodier, nastier, and devilishly unnerving horror movies to come along in recent years, you should eagerly press play on the below trailer for the French horror movie. And don't worry, it's totally spoiler free. It's also plot free. And dialogue free. But, again, it is not blood free. There's kind of a lot in it. Since the trailer... DC's 'Green Lantern Corps' Moves Forward; Described as "'Lethal Weapon' in Space" Posted: 12 Jan 2017 04:30 PM PST Warner Bros. and DC are moving pretty aggressively on getting the character of Green Lantern back into the fold, teaming veteran writer David Goyer with up-and-comer Justin Rhodes (Grassroots, Unmanned) on a new Green Lantern film that's being described as "Lethal Weapon in space," according to Deadline. The film, based on a story by Goyer and DC chief Geoff Johns, will serve as an origin story of sorts and focus on both Hal Jordan and John Stewart, the latter being an African-American Marine sniper who is brought into the Green Lantern Corps. and, we presume, trained by Jordan. Considering the Lethal Weapon description, their rocky relationship will likely be at the heart of the film. As of now the release date stands at July 24, 2020 (but that could change and... The First 'CHIPS' Trailer Chases the '21 Jump Street' Beat Posted: 12 Jan 2017 03:00 PM PST In retrospect, 21 Jump Street may have been one of the most influential movies of the last five years. It launched directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller's career as live-action directors (they'd been in animation up until that point), and now they're doing the young Han Solo movie. It proved that R-rated action comedies could still be smart, creative and drive huge box office numbers, helping open the door for a wave of movies like The Heat, Spy and Deadpool. And it also gave other studios a blueprint to follow for how to reboot old TV shows on the big screen. This year we'll see that blueprint followed twice in Baywatch and CHIPS. We've already gotten a few trailers for the former (even though it comes out second), but now we've got our first... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Gun Violence Rising in PG-13 Movies, According to New Report Posted: 12 Jan 2017 01:30 PM PST The movie ratings system has become more specific in its descriptions in recent years.
