The Geek Beat: 5 Video Game Movies That Deserve Another Look Posted: 22 Jun 2016 09:00 PM PDT Movies based on video games have generally had a tough time winning over audiences – particularly in the U.S. However, as Warcraft is currently reminding us, international audiences are an entirely different matter. Despite poor reviews and a dismal box-office performance in U.S. theaters, Moon director Duncan Jones' adaptation of the popular fantasy game franchise has become a bona fide hit overseas, and now reigns supreme as the highest-grossing movie based on a video game ever made – and it's only been in theaters two weeks. Still, the buzz – both negative and positive – surrounding Warcraft has put the spotlight back on video game movies, and there's been no shortage of pundits, pessimists, and prognosticators willing to declare movies... Taika Waititi Explains Why 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople' Is Like a Kid's Fantasy Movie Posted: 22 Jun 2016 07:30 PM PDT When most people think of movies and New Zealand, they jump to Peter Jackson and Lord of the Rings. As well they should, since Jackson's movies shifted the rest of the world's perception of New Zealand into a picturesque fantasy land. But New Zealand's film industry hasn't only given great landscapes to the world, they're also exporting some very, very funny people who keep climbing higher and higher in Hollywood. One New Zealander whose career is rocketing off is Taika Waititi (pictured above). He first started to catch international eyes in the late 2000s thanks to work on Flight of the Conchords and Eagle vs. Shark, but it was 2014's vampire documentary What We Do In the Shadows that seemed to really start a career... Meet the Characters, New and Old, of 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' Posted: 22 Jun 2016 06:00 PM PDT With just under six months left until the release of the next Star Wars movie, fans are crazy with anticipation about the movie. Even if it is a prequel/spinoff rather than the continuation of the saga as we've known it, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has a lot of things piquing everyone's curiosity as far as who the new characters are, whether some of them are or relate to characters we already know, and of course the fact that Darth Vader in full familiar costume is involved and on screen in some capacity. Well, Entertainment Weekly has a new cover story and slideshow feature focused on introducing us to the characters and their significance to the story, which follows a band of mercenaries on a mission to steal the plans for the first Death Star, leading to the... In 'Kong: Skull Island,' the Ape Will Be Different Posted: 22 Jun 2016 04:30 PM PDT We've been hearing that the upcoming Kong: Skull Island will be a prequel, taking place before the events dramatized in the original King Kong (1933) and the two remakes in 1976 and 2005. As the release date draws closer, however, we're starting to hear more details about what makes the movie different. Originally announced in July 2014, the movie was touted to explore the mysterious and dangerous Skull Island, the birthplace of the giant ape known as King Kong. In all previous Kong-related movies, the island has been depicted as a hidden location, filled with prehistoric creatures. As time passed, we learned that the movie would be set in the 1970s and follow a team of Vietnam War-era military veterans who explore the island for the first time. Now comes word that the... Disney Has Plans for More Than One New 'Indiana Jones' Movie Posted: 22 Jun 2016 01:30 PM PDT Disney chief Bob Iger recently sat down for a sprawling conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, touching on everything from how they manage their massive brands, like Pixar, Marvel, Disney Animation and Lucasfilm, to whether he'll ever get into politics, to the future of Star Wars and Indiana Jones. It's those last two film properties movie fans will be most interested in (though we recommend reading the entire piece, especially when Iger talks about the impact Pixar has had on Disney Animation), and while there wasn't a whole lot on Star Wars (Iger dismissed the Rogue One reshoots, saying he thinks it's going to make "a fine film"), he did confirm that ol' Diz wants to make more than one Indiana Jones movie. Iger seemed a bit cagey when... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
It's Confirmed! Darth Vader Will Be Back in 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' Posted: 22 Jun 2016 12:00 PM PDT Even though you can't really throw a rock without hitting a Star Wars fan who's pretty confident Darth Vader will return in this year's prequel adventure, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the iconic villain's presence has now been officially confirmed by Entertainment Weekly, whose latest issue sports a preview of the film inside and on its cover. Have a look... Fans were confident Vader would return seeing as Rogue One takes place during a time when Vader was in his prime. Rumors also suggest the film will end shortly before the very first Star Wars movie, A New Hope, begins, and if that's the case it'd be hard not to include the menacing sith lord. EW teases a story about Vader's first day on set (we're still awaiting that first image), as... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
