The Last Sci-fi Blog: 'Star Trek,' 'Independence Day,' Call of Duty' and More Posted: 17 Jun 2016 08:30 PM PDT On this very slow month for major science fiction movie news, let’s pick through the a few recent scraps of interest and find stuff to praise and stuff to complain about. This is the internet, after all. This is what we do. Star Trek Beyond Reveals a New Poster It’s the 50th anniversary of the creation of Star Trek this year, but you wouldn’t know it. Sure, Star Trek Beyond comes out next month, but the marketing has been scarce and Paramount hasn’t been doing much to get anyone who isn’t a serious fan interested in the latest adventure of the Enterprise crew. We can’t even celebrate with the new television series in the works because that won’t arrive until 2016. We’re coming straight out of a year where Star Wars was... 'Suicide Squad' May Have the Soundtrack of the Summer Posted: 17 Jun 2016 07:20 PM PDT Superhero movies have some of the most iconic scores -- from Superman to The Dark Knight -- but they're also no strangers to pop music. Just look back to Prince's contributions to Tim Burton's Batman and Seal's hit "Kiss From a Rose" from Batman Forever, not to mention Chad Kroeger and Josey Scott's "Hero" from Spider-Man. But the soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy was a whole new animal in terms of giving moviegoers and fans an enjoyable collection of classic tunes supplementary to a great movie. Of course, the Guardians music is significant to the plot of that Marvel Comics adaptation. The same is true of at least a couple of the pop music tracks in Deadpool... The Movie Franchise That's Helping LeBron James Rule the NBA Playoffs Posted: 17 Jun 2016 04:40 PM PDT If you're any kind of basketball fan, then you're aware the NBA Finals are not only ongoing, but they've been kicked up a notch by the fact that the Cleveland Cavaliers have come back from a three-games-to-one deficit to tie the series at three games apiece, forcing a final game seven Sunday night. In each of the three games Cleveland has won, James has scored over 30 points, with the small forward scoring 41 points in games 5 and 6, dominating the court in every way. And one of the reasons why he may be so locked in right now is because James has turned to movies to help keep him calm between games. Or, we should say, one specific movie franchise: The Godfather series. According to ESPN’s Chris Broussard, who asked James if all the Golden State... Comics on Film: Why Donald Glover's Role in 'Spider-Man' Is a Big Deal to Fans Posted: 17 Jun 2016 03:30 PM PDT Although we're over a month removed from the release of Marvel Studios' Captain America: Civil War, fans are still exuding a great deal of excitement over actor Tom Holland's portrayal of – arguably – Marvel's most popular superhero, Spider-Man. He was only in it for a short time, but what was there left a very positive impression on those of us waiting eagerly for next year's Spider-Man: Homecoming. That film will feature Holland's first solo-led performance as Peter Parker, and will further plant him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This week, we also saw some rather surprising casting news that likely brought a smile to the faces of many a Spider-Man fan: actor Donald Glover, a successful comedy writer and performer in the... 'Star Wars' Buzz: Why 'Daredevil' Actor Didn't Play Han Solo Posted: 17 Jun 2016 01:30 PM PDT Harrison Ford was not George Lucas' first choice to play Han Solo in Star Wars. The director considered actors like Kurt Russell, Nick Nolte, Sylvester Stallone and Bill Murray before deciding to go with Ford. So it should really be no surprise that thousands of actors were reportedly considered to play a younger version of Ford. By January of this year, the candidates had been narrowed considerably; the list included Miles Teller (Fantastic Four) and Dave Franco (Now You See Me 2), who have both spoken about their auditions. Teller said: "I had never even seen any of the original Star Wars movies until maybe a month or a couple weeks before my first audition because I was like, ‘I should check this out’ (laughs). It holds up. I just love Harrison Ford, I... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
