Martin Scorsese's Top Rated Movies

Posted:

leonardo dicaprio in martin scorsese's the departedSomewhere in the world right now, there is a terrible actor delivering a monologue.

He wears a cheap suit with the polyester shirt collar over the jacket and affects a New York accent, even though he's from a small suburb just outside of Des Moines. He's going to tell you all about life on the streets, and you better believe there will be a prop cigarette involved. And if you're lucky, maybe he'll break out the rubber gun for "shock" value.

For this actor, you can thank Martin Scorsese. It's not really Marty's fault, though; it's not that he forced struggling actors into bad De Niro impressions, it's just that his films have had such an impact on what we think when we hear the word "movies" that we're bound to dip into "too much of a good thing" territory sometimes. Be thankful that no matter how many Scorsese imitators the decades have spawned, you can always cleanse your palate with these bona-fide classics.

'Mean Streets' (1973)

By 1973, the 31-year-old Martin Scorsese's vision had enough time in the oven to really nail down his signature Scorsese recipe -- and that recipe was called "Mean Streets." It had everything you want from a Scorsese flick: A complex antihero lead, more Italian crime drama than a Sicilian prison, impressively long takes, and even the unforgettable use of a Rolling Stones song. And with that song -- "Tell Me," for the record -- entered one Robert De Niro. The combo worked so well, Marty and Bobby would go on to do eight more movies together.

Without "Mean Streets," you wouldn't have Scorsese as you know him. And without "Mean Streets," you wouldn't have "Goodfellas," which itself topped Rolling Stone's reader list of the best Martin Scorsese movies in 2015. Good thing Little Italy was so messed up in the '70s.

'Taxi Driver' (1976)

If the world only has room for one Martin Scorsese movie in the vault when the zombie apocalypse hits, that movie should be "Taxi Driver." A few years of mainstream success gave Scorsese the freedom to stretch out a bit for his fifth feature, so "Taxi Driver" gets a lot more meditative -- in a psychotic sort of way -- than its precursors. What it really likes to meditate on, though, is New York City. When you think of the gritty, neon porno-haven that was NYC in the '70s -- a place that seemed 90 percent made up of muggers, pimps, crooks, and cops -- you think of "Taxi Driver." And moviegoers haven't stopped thinking of "Taxi Driver" for going on 40 years.

'Raging Bull' (1980)

Crime, New York, Italian-American culture, and Robert De Niro are Scorsese's four food groups, but in 1980, "Raging Bull" taught us that Marty likes a heaping helping of real-world characters for dessert -- he'd later prove that with reality-based tales like "Casino," "The Aviator," and "The Wolf of Wall Street." Though "Boxcar Bertha" waded in the biopic kiddie pool, "Bull" dove in head-first with the true story of brutal, dynamic, and ultimately tortured middleweight boxer Jake LaMotta. More than the fights, it's the combo of brilliant character study and powerhouse performances that makes "Raging Bull" a movie for the ages -- Scorsese added Joe Pesci to his cinematic stable, and De Niro's 60-pound body transformation is so dramatic, gaining weight for a role became something between a cliche and a "serious actor" litmus test. Eat your heart out, Christian Bale.

Note: If you're reading this, Christian Bale, that was joke. Don't eat your heart out. Really not necessary this time.

'The Departed' (2006)

You've probably noticed a theme on this list, because you're super smart. These films all sort of represent milestones for Scorsese, the birth of a new Scorsesian chapter in film. And on that note, though 2006's "The Departed" didn't exactly start a chapter, it encapsulates everything that makes 21st-century Scorsese great. It's led by Leonardo DiCaprio -- who's creeping up on De Niro's record with five collaborations under his belt -- it swaps out the Rolling Stones for the Dropkick Murphys, and it heralded the era of Marty actually winning Oscars. That's right: After decades of snubs, he finally took home Best Director in 2007. This is Scorsese 2.0.

5 Best TV Shows to Watch With a Glass of Wine

Posted:

Outlander on Starz"Everything's better with some wine in the belly," Tyrion Lannister tells Jon Snow in Season 1, Episode 2 of "Game of Thrones" (Peter Dinklage gets all the best lines).

He's right, of course. Everything is better with wine -- except maybe driving, operating heavy machinery, or listening to Adele -- and TV shows are no exception. The worst day at work is bearable if you know that at approximately 8 p.m. you'll be curled up on the couch with a giant glass of Bordeaux and three episodes of "Peaky Blinders" to watch. The combination of entertainment and wine is pure relaxation and a proper, grownup treat.

While most people understand matching wine and food, you can also pair your favorite TV shows with the right wines for the occasion. Here are five shows and the wines that complement them perfectly.

1. 'Broadchurch' (2013 - )

When a young boy is found dead in the sleepy English coastal town of Broadchurch, detectives Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller (David Tennant and Olivia Colman ) go on a mission to find the killer in a town where everyone -- including family -- is a suspect. A dark, gritty British crime drama like "Broadchurch" needs a good strong red wine like an Australian shiraz. It'll soothe you through some of the more disturbing scenes in a show full to the brim with creepy potential child-murderers.

2. 'Outlander' (2014 - )

Someone seems to be drinking either wine or whiskey in almost every episode of "Outlander," clearly as a tonic for the freezing Scottish weather. Caitriona Balfe's married nurse Claire Randall accidentally goes back in time to 1743 Scotland, just before the Jacobite uprisings. She falls in love with Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), and together they try to prevent the rebellion that will end in a massacre that's the beginning of the end of Highland culture. Claire prefers "Rhenish wine" -- and it's what she got stinking drunk on in Season 1 -- so German varieties from the Rhine region, such as Riesling, Liebfraumilch, or Dornfelder, give you the perfect choice for this time-traveling romance. If it's good enough for Claire, it's good enough for you.

3. 'Game of Thrones' (2011 - )

"Game of Thrones" is another show where the characters seem to be drinking wine nonstop, especially Lena Headey's Cersei Lannister and Peter Dinklage's Tyrion Lannister. A show this nerve-racking and violent needs a good, strong, robust yet delicious wine -- a Rioja would be just the thing. What's most important though is having a big wine glass -- these characters are constantly slugging wine from huge goblets, so no teeny-tiny wine glasses will cut it. All that wine will make it easier when your favorite character inevitably gets slaughtered.

4. 'Dancing with the Stars' (2005 - )

In direct contrast to so many dark TV dramas, "Dancing with the Stars" is an upbeat, cheerful, and highly addictive reality show that requires an upbeat, cheerful wine. Sip a dry Champagne to accompany the show's snazzy costumes and sexy moves, because drinking bubbly always feels like a celebration. Sip when your favorite team wins, and drink even more if they lose -- a good time is guaranteed either way.

5. 'The Real Housewives of New York City' (2008 - )

"The Real Housewives of New York City" are well known for having wine-fueled fights -- usually somewhere entirely inappropriate, like a children's birthday party. All that's needed to further enjoy this already very guilty pleasure is a bottle of ice-cold rosé. While the cast members have horrendous fights and toss glasses of wine at each other, smugly sip your crisp rosé and enjoy the drama. It doesn't even have to be New York -- any of the Housewives franchises, from Beverly Hills to Atlanta to New Jersey, could be substituted in this instance. The one thing they all seem to have in common is drinking rosé and throwing it at each other.

Melissa McCarthy Wants to Make a Bunch of 'Ghostbusters' Sequels

Posted:

"Ghostbusters" Red Carpet And Guinness World Record event, Marina Bay Sands, SingaporeThe "Ghostbusters" reboot starring a fabulous female foursome hasn't even hit theaters yet, but two of its leading ladies say they definitely want to make a sequel -- and the sky's the limit on just how many follow-ups there are.

That's the word from Melissa McCarthy and Leslie Jones, who recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the flick. McCarthy, who plays paranormal researcher Abby Yates in the movie, gushed about her fellow costars -- Jones, Kristen Wiig, and Kate McKinnon -- and said that she was down for a surprising number of sequels.

"I would do 102 more of these," McCarthy told THR. "I will literally show up for [director] Paul Feig and these women no matter what. I'll show up for plays in a backyard."

Jones, who plays MTA worker-turned-Ghostbuster Patty Tolan, was equally effusive, telling THR, " ... [A]s many as they do, I'm there."

Right now, there's no specific plan for a sequel, as Feig explained in his own interview with the trade, though he said he was open to the idea ("It's such a fun world, the sky is the limit," he told THR). We'll keep our fingers crossed that fans will get to see more bustin' in the future.

"Ghostbusters" is due in theaters on July 15. Stay tuned for release dates for the next 102 flicks.

Wilmer Valderrama Joins 'NCIS' Season 14 as Series Regular

Posted:

Photo Femmes Exhibition Opening At De Re Gallery Featuring The work Of Ashley Noelle, Bojana Novakovic And Monroe"NCIS" will return for its 14th season this fall, and the show will have a new leading man when it debuts: Wilmer Valderrama.

Valderrama ("That '70s Show") will join the veteran procedural as a series regular, playing a mysterious new agent -- or at least, new to viewers (and yes, some of his coworkers). Here's the scoop from CBS:

Valderrama's character will emerge from a years-long deep cover assignment, with many of his NCIS colleagues unaware that he's still working there—or even alive! Once known as a grounded field agent, his dedication to job and country have left him an unpredictable, charismatic loose cannon.

In a statement, "NCIS" executive producer Gary Glasberg noted that the actor would bring "dramatic, physical, and comedic talents" to the "classic role" of the as-yet-unnamed character.

"Fans are going to see him like they've never seen him before," Glasberg added of Valderrama. "This is going to be fun. We're thrilled he's coming aboard."

Valderrama is stepping into the longrunning drama just as original star Michael Weatherly has departed, leaving a hole in the main cast. Based on Glasberg's statement, it sounds like Valderrama's new character is meant to fill the wisecracking DiNozzo's void; fans will have to wait until later this year to see if they like the replacement.

"NCIS" season 14 hits CBS sometime this fall.

The Joker's Tattoos Are 'Suicide Squad' Easter Eggs

Posted:

When the "Suicide Squad" characters were first introduced, there was some controversy over Jared Leto's heavily-tattooed version of The Joker. But according to director David Ayer, there's a very specific inspiration behind Leto's Joker look -- and those tattoos actually reveal a lot about the character and film.

In an interview with Yahoo! Movies UK, Ayer explained how he decided upon Leto's look for the flick, telling the site, "I took a lot of inspiration from drug lords on Instagram." From their flashy cars to customized guns to, yes, their copious gang tattoos, there's a little bit of those real-life nefarious characters in The Joker as well. And as for just what the ink depicts, there's a reason behind each bit of imagery, according to Ayer.

"The tattoos tell a very specific story," the director explained to Yahoo!. "And eventually people will decipher them and understand what's going on, but obviously they're contentious, any time you do something new it's contentious. There's very specific stories and easter eggs in those tattoos. And even his teeth, there's an entire story behind that which is absolutely canon. It's putting his history on his body. This Joker is a little more working class, who I believe could live in our world."

The significance of tattoos doesn't stop with The Joker, since Harley Quinn sports as few of her own, too. As actress Margot Robbie told Yahoo!, there's a character-driven reason behind the crudely-drawn ink.

"She did these herself in prison," Robbie explained to the site while showing off the tattoos. "They're stick and poke tattoos, prison-style tattoos, that you do when you don't have a tattoo gun. She did them herself out of boredom and desperation... There's I Heart Puddin', a Joker face, a love heart... that's obviously reflective of her time in prison."

Fans will get to see for themselves whether or not the ink adds to (or detracts from) the characters when "Suicide Squad" hits theaters on August 5.

'Finding Dory' Swims Away With $9.2 Million Thursday, Breaks Record

Posted:

"Finding Dory" is doing just swimmingly as it makes its box office debut, earning $9.2 million in Thursday preview receipts, enough to break two records.

That sum puts "Dory" at the top of Pixar's list of biggest Thursday openings ever, besting previous champ "Toy Story 3," which earned $4 million at the Thursday box office in 2010. The second broken record is even more impressive: "Dory" easily beat 2015 behemoth "Minions" ($6.2 million) to earn the title of best Thursday opening ever for an animated movie.

Now, "Dory" has an even bigger record in its sights: Taking on Pixar's all-time top opening weekend earner, "Toy Story 3," which bowed to a whopping $110.3 million upon its release. Industry insiders already had high hopes for "Dory," projecting the flick to earn anywhere from $110 to $115 million earlier this week; now, with such an impressive debut in previews, the flick looks like it will easily outpace those numbers (current estimates put it closer to a projected $120 million haul, though with Thursday's numbers in consideration, that may be a modest sum).

"Finding Dory" is Pixar's widest release ever, and won't face much competition from the family crowd from fellow new release "Central Intelligence." We expect that Pixar will be sitting pretty at the top of the box office -- with a potentially jaw-dropping sum -- once final tallies roll in on Sunday evening.

A 'Hamilton' Documentary Is Coming to PBS (and Lin-Manuel Miranda Is Taping His Performance, Too)

Posted:

2016 Tony Awards - ShowThere may not be a "Hamilton" movie in the works any time soon, but that doesn't mean fans won't be able to enjoy the musical outside of Broadway: The production announced some big news yesterday that ensures there will be at least some "Hamilton" content (and possibly the entire show) coming to the airwaves very soon.

"Hamilton" creator and titular star Lin-Manuel Miranda revealed that the Tony-winning musical smash is set for the documentary treatment, and will be featured on the ongoing PBS series "Great Performances." The 90-minute doc will premiere on PBS on October 17, and will feature not only some in-depth behind-the-scenes footage, but also discuss "where 'Hamilton' intersects with history," according to Miranda.

The documentary is being directed by Miranda's longtime friend (and onetime college roommate) Alex Horwitz, and includes what Miranda dubs "insane footage," such as the composer writing "My Shot," and interviews with big names including President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, George W. Bush, Questlove, and Jimmy Fallon. Miranda himself also conducted interviews with Stephen Sondheim, John Weidman, and Nas.

But what could be an even bigger bit of news for fans is the announcement that the entirety of "Hamilton" itself is set to be filmed before Miranda departs the production on July 9. According to the star, RadicalMedia (the company also behind the doc) will be shooting two full "Hamilton" performances later this month, though Playbill reports that "use of the footage in its entirety or otherwise has yet to be determined."

The obvious application would be to air the musical on television at a later date (or even broadcast it in movie theaters), though of course, fans will fave to wait for official word from the production before we know what it plans to do with the recordings. Fingers crossed that it makes its way onto the screen -- either big or small -- sometime soon.

Logan Marshall-Green Joins 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' as Villain

Posted:

US actor Logan Marshall-Green arrives onThe "Spider-Man: Homecoming" cast continues to expand its web of supporting players, with two new actors joining the mix in recent days.

First up is Logan Marshall-Green (a "Prometheus" star, and a dead ringer for Tom Hardy), who The Hollywood Reporter says will play a villain in the flick alongside the previously cast Michael Keaton, who's rumored to be playing The Vulture. The identity of Marshall-Green's character is unknown at this point, though he would be teaming up with The Vulture in some capacity.

Next is Martin Starr ("Silicon Valley," "Freaks and Geeks"), who Deadline reports just signed on the dotted line to join the ensemble. His role has not been disclosed.

"Homecoming" has been shoring up its cast in preparation for production, which begins later this month. Earlier this week, the flick added actor-rapper Donald Glover ("Community") to the mix. His part is unspecified for now, though he previously was fans' choice to take over the franchise as Miles Morales, a.k.a. the first mixed race Spider-Man. (Glover also voiced the character in an animated series.)

These additions round out the previously-announced ensemble, headlined by Tom Holland as the titular web-slinger, and featuring Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Zendaya (an unnamed female lead), Robert Downey Jr. (reprising his Iron Man character), and supporting actors in yet-to-be-identified roles: Michael Barbieri, Kenneth Choi, Tony Revolori, and Laura Harrier.

"Spider-Man: Homecoming" swings into theaters on July 7, 2017.
