With the annual Superman Celebration happening in Metropolis, Illinois this weekend, it seems only appropriate that this week's Comics on Film focuses on the iconic Man of Steel. The biggest recent news about him concerns the character's upcoming appearance in Justice League, shooting right now with controversial director Zack Snyder at the helm, as well as in the midst of what seems to be a major reorganization at Warner Bros. concerning the future use of their DC Comics properties. Over the last month, we've heard about executive appointments and replacements, a new, dedicated'"back to basics' course correction for the publishing side of... Of Course The Asylum Made a Knockoff Called 'Independents' Day' Posted: 10 Jun 2016 06:30 PM PDT The Asylum has a long history with the mockbuster-- cheaply produced knockoff versions of Hollywood's A-list movies. These quickly made, quickly released straight-to-DVD movies are timed to hit store shelves before their big screen counterparts in the hopes of tricking customers who don't know any better into thinking this might be the real thing. At least that's how The Asylum, and its customers, used to operate. Now they can just shamelessly make bad movies and audiences will gobble them up just to be in on the trend. This is why Sharknado became A Thing. It's why they hired boy band members for Dead 7. Irony sells these days. That doesn't mean that The Asylum has given up making their old mockbusters, though. Case-in-point, the first trailer for... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

'Raiders of the Lost Ark' Turns 35: Celebrate With This Look at the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made Posted: 10 Jun 2016 05:00 PM PDT Raiders of the Lost Ark turns 35 this summer. In fact, it was released nearly 35 years ago to this very day. And what better way to celebrate it than by taking a look at movie that is the ultimate celebration of it? Confused? We'll explain. Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made is a documentary about a group of kids who spent their childhood painstakingly recreating Steven Spielberg's movie shot-for-shot. Why? Because they loved the movie and they loved filmmaking, so they figured why not make their own version of it? And while the idea of watching a documentary about someone else's home videos may sound a bit odd, trust us, the movie - and their story - is fantastic. It's not simply about kids making a fan film. It's about how... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Mel Gibson Wants to Make 'Passion of the Christ' Sequel Posted: 10 Jun 2016 01:30 PM PDT In 2002, Mel Gibson was riding high as one of the biggest box office stars in the world. His most recent films at the time, Signs and We Were Soldiers, showed his versatility with different types of material, yet he suggested he wanted to focus more on directing and producing. He'd already won an Academy Award for directing and producing Braveheart, so what might be next for him? That turned out to be The Passion of the Christ, an intense, R-rated drama that primarily covered the final 12 hours of the life of Jesus Christ (Jim Caviezel). Gibson cowrote, coproduced and directed the movie, which was quite controversial, due in part to its depiction of graphic violence and due in part to its version of events. The film was fully financed by Gibson and his company, Icon... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Movie News: 'Battlestar Galactica' Movie Moves Forward; Jennifer Lawrence Heads Toward Medical Drama Posted: 10 Jun 2016 12:00 PM PDT Battlestar Galactica: Lisa Joy (HBO's upcoming sci-fi series Westworld) has been hired to write the screenplay for a big-screen version of Battlestar Galactica. Director Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2) is said to be considering the project. Battlestar Galactica debuted as a rather goofy TV show in the late 1970s and then was reborn as a more serious drama on basic cable in 2003 (above). It's now considered a possible launching pad for a new movie franchise. [Deadline] Jennifer Lawrence: Actress Jennifer Lawrence is attached to star in an untitled medical drama about a controversial blood-testing company. Lawrence would play Elizabeth Holmes, who founded a company that saw its value soar before plummeting after it came under...
