How 'Die Hard' Owes Much of Its Success to a Runaway Refrigerator Box

Posted: 16 Jun 2016 10:00 PM PDT

The origins of movies and the story of their continued developments are always of interest to die hard fans, and especially to Die Hard fans. The classic action film has long been known to have a rich history as far as its source materials are concerned. It's somewhat based on the 1979 Roderick Thorp novel Nothing Lasts Forever, which is a sequel to his book The Detective. The earlier work became a movie of the same name in 1968 starring Frank Sinatra, and he was expected to reprise the lead role in the follow up. Years went by after Sinatra passed on the movie and it was supposedly then reworked as a sequel to Commando (though screenwriter Steven de Souza has denied this). Eventually it wound up being a new property all its own, but there are two...

Watch: Lucasfilm and Magic Leap are Teaming to Make Crazy 'Star Wars' Holograms a Reality

Posted: 16 Jun 2016 08:30 PM PDT

It's hard to watch Star Wars and not want to reach into the screen and pull things from its science fantasy world into our own. How cool would it be to have a lightsaber? Or a service droid? Or a best friend who was a wookie? Or, ya' know, a spaceship? One, seemingly small thing we've all been dreaming of from Star Wars is on the verge of becoming a reality: holograms. Well, kind of. Technically speaking, that image you see of C-3PO and R2-D2 in a living room isn't a hologram in the traditional sense. It's more like a piece of virtual reality that is filtered digitally to your eyeballs so as to look like it's in the real world. It does require a special set of goggles to see, but it's not like other VR systems. The technology comes from a company...

The Drug Lord Instagram Pics That May Have Inspired Jared Leto's Joker

Posted: 16 Jun 2016 06:44 PM PDT

Clearly the creation of Jared Leto's version of the Joker in this summer's Suicide Squad is a hot topic, what with more unusual behind-the-scenes stories emerging with each passing week. From remaining in character throughout the entire production to sending cast members weird and creepy gifts (like dead animals), Leto's Joker is without a doubt one of the year's most anticipated movie characters. And his story keeps getting stranger.  According to director David Ayer, he wanted a real-world version of Joker, creating someone who he feels could actually exist in our modern world. And for inspiration, he turned to the Instagram accounts of drug lords. Ayer tells Yahoo... "A lot of it has to do with creating a character with some kind of history and...

This New 'Storks' Trailer Is Adorably Weird

Posted: 16 Jun 2016 04:30 PM PDT

Storks may have one of the strangest plots of any recent kids' movie. It takes place in a world in which flying birds do actually deliver babies to people, which is certainly odd enough. But as this new trailer for Storks shows us, that world is even more surreal because the storks have decided to go all corporate. The way of the future is delivering people's online shopping, not their actual babies, so the storks basically become Amazon package drones. Weird, right? That's apparently what happens when you team up the people who made The Lego Movie with the writer-director of Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Neighbors. But don't let those R-rated credits make you think this is anything but a silly kids' movie. It's got talking animals, humans with jet packs...

Taika Waititi Updates the 'What We Do in the Shadows' Sequel Status, Plus: Thor's 'Civil War' Allegiance

Posted: 16 Jun 2016 03:00 PM PDT

When Taikai Waititi was hired to direct Thor: Ragnarok, a lot of people the world over probably did a bit of a, "Who?" He's not quite yet a household name despite the actor-writer-director-producer's credits including Flight of the Conchords, Eagle vs Shark, Boy, Green Lantern, The Inbetweeners, and What We Do In the Shadows. His newest movie is the adventure comedy Hunt for the Wilderpeople, starring Sam Neil as the gruff foster uncle of a kid on the run from the New Zealand government. It's a very funny, very touching movie about finding family in unexpected places and is well worth seeking out when it hits theaters on June 24, 2016. Fandango recently spoke with Waititi about Hunt for the Wilderpeople, but we'll save that part of our...

'The Conjuring 2' Inspires Scary Spin-off 'The Nun'

Posted: 16 Jun 2016 01:30 PM PDT

Horror movie spin-offs are relatively rare. Freddy vs. Jason was a unique spin-off of two different franchises, matching serial killers Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees against one other in a very bloody, action-packed movie. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones left behind comfortable Caucasian families in the suburbs to see how young Latinos in a low-budget apartment complex fared against the supernatural. More recently, Annabelle followed the terrifying adventures of a vintage doll that first appeared on screen in The Conjuring. The movie, with a reported budget of just $6.5 million, did extremely well at the box office, earning more than $256 million worldwide. A sequel is on its way, scheduled to haunt theaters on May 19, 2017.   The original spawned its own...
