'Starman' Is the Next John Carpenter Movie to Get a Remake

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 08:30 PM PDT

Roughly half of John Carpenter's feature films have either already been remade or have remakes in the works. Apparently that's just what happens when you make some of the most popular and influential genre films of the '70s and '80s. And now we can move one more to the remake column, as THR breaks news that a new Starman is in the works with Shawn Levy (Real Steel) directing a script from Arash Amel (who is writing another '80s remake, WarGames). A Starman remake could fair quite well in this day and age, at least better than some other Carpenter re-dos (we're glowering at you, The Fog). Not because the original needs improvement - it's actually one of Carpenter's best films - but because it simply has a wonderful, compassionate story...

Comics on Film: The Reason for 'Batman v Superman''s Shocking Ending

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 07:00 PM PDT

WARNING: This article makes direct, repeated mention of the manner in which Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ends. If you haven't yet seen the film and do not want to be spoiled about the film's ending, it's recommended that you don't read this week's column. The polarization from fans, critics, and general audiences over Warner Bros.' Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice doesn't seem to have calmed down in the week since the film was released in theaters. After a negative critical reception and a very divided fan reaction, the film has seen unprecedented success for the superhero film genre, further indicating that a very real divide exists between those whose job it is to review the film, and those that have actually paid to watch...

Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin to Return in 'Sicario 2'

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 06:00 PM PDT

Denis Villeneuve's Sicario is the kind of movie for grown-ups we don't see a lot of these days. And when we do see them, they're sadly not often hits. Sicario was a big success, though, with an impressive per-screen average in its limited opening, the sort of performance deserved by a thriller with mostly positive reviews (a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes). And it went on to earn three Oscar nominations. It has also earned a sequel, something that's even rarer lately for adult-targeting dramas, even if they contain a good deal of action. We can be sure today's news on the follow-up is not an April Fools' Day joke because this isn't the first we've heard about a possible Sicario 2. Development on this was first announced last September, right after...

Kylo Ren's Voice in 'The Force Awakens' Was Inspired By Chainsaws and Flamethrowers

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 03:00 PM PDT

In anticipation of the digital HD release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Friday, April 1 via the brand new FandangoNOW VOD platform, we sat down with Force Awakens sound editor Matthew Wood and visual effects supervisor Roger Guyett to discuss some of the cooler things that went on behind the scenes while crafting one of the most successful films ever made.   Like how did they create the freaky sound of Kylo Ren's mask? One of the trickiest parts of Star Wars: The Force Awakens came with introducing a new villain that's both unlike any villain we've seen in Star Wars, but also one whose very purpose is to finish what his granddad Darth Vader started. Hence, Kylo Ren most definitely rocks a heavy Vader vibe, but almost everything else about the...

'New Mutants' Casting Rumors Include 'Game of Thrones' Star Maisie Williams

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 01:30 PM PDT

X-Men: Apocalypse is ready to explode into theaters on May 27, representing the conclusion of a trilogy that has redefined the X-Men cinematic universe. After that, the third X-Men spin-off movie starring Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is scheduled for March 3, 2017. Then what? In May 2015, Fox hired Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) to start an X-Men spin-off franchise revolving around The New Mutants, inspired by the Marvel comics about a group of teenaged mutants in training. Boone and Knate Gwaltney completed the first draft of the script in October. Now we're hearing a bit more about The New Mutants. Producer Simon Kinberg stated: "Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men movies, New Mutants… It’s maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has...

Movie News: 'Suicide Squad' Reshoots Aim for the Funny; 'Rose Red,' Snow White's Sister, Getting Her Own Disney Movie

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 12:00 PM PDT

Suicide Squad: Reportedly, new footage for Suicide Squad is being shot right now with the goal of altering the tone of the movie to bring in "more of the lightness to which audiences responded" in an early trailer. The idea is to beef up "fun character moments and interactions." Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman and Viola Davis star; the movie will open in theaters on August 5. [BirthMoviesDeath]   Rose Red: Snow White's sister Rose Red will be featured in a new Disney live-action movie. The character originated in a German fairy tale that has nothing to do with the fairy tale adapted for the animated Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (above). Justin Merz wrote a screenplay that was then reworked by Evan Daugherty (Snow White and...
