'Spider-Man' Reboot Will Feature Other Marvel Characters Posted: The upcoming reboot of "Spider-Man" will feature other Marvel characters, because ... well, duh! If you're going to include him in the shared Marvel Cinematic Universe, might as well double down. As Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Entertainment Weekly, "He is in the universe now, and the fun of the universe is that characters go back and forth." This couldn't have happened had Sony and Marvel not come to a deal to co-produce the reboot. That led to the introduction of Spider-Man (Tom Holland) in "Captain America: Civil War," which opens May 6. The standalone "Spider-Man" movie isn't due in theaters until July 2017, but we can start speculating now about which characters might show up in the film. An obvious choice would be Iron Man, as Tony Stark serves as a sort of mentor to young Peter Parker. And Holland performed his screen tests with Robert Downey, Jr. But making a deal with Downey for the movie might prove difficult. Same goes with Chris Evans, who plays Captain America (and happens to live in New York City, too, like Spider-Man). Which Marvel characters do you think could cross over? Want more stuff like this? Davos Is Ready for a Fight in First 'Game of Thrones' Season 6 Clip Posted: Maybe Jon Snow is really dead, maybe not, but Davos Seaworth is still fighting for him. Liam Cunningham, who plays the grizzled knight on "Game of Thrones," stopped by Conan O'Brien's late night show to preview the upcoming sixth season of the HBO drama, which premieres April 24. After teasing that only he knows a secret revealed to him by author George R.R. Martin, Cunningham unveiled the first clip from season 6. The scene expands on flashes of footage we saw in the trailer. Davos is guarding Jon Snow's corpse, as Alliser Thorne and his mutinous Night's Watch minions try to break into the room holding them. "I've been never been much of a fighter," Davos says, drawing Jon's sword. Jon's direwolf, Ghost, growls right beside him, ready to tear out some Night's Watch throats. Presumably, Alliser and cohorts want to burn Jon's body, to prevent him from becoming a White Walker, while Davos is safeguarding it ... for what? Maybe for Melisandre to work her magic and bring him back to life? (Crossing our fingers) Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. Anne Hathaway Welcomes Baby Boy With Husband Adam Shulman Posted: Anne Hathaway has a new role to play: mom. The actress has welcomed her first child, a boy, with husband Adam Shulman. E! News reports that Hathaway gave birth on March 24 to son Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman. A rep for the Oscar winner confirmed the news to E!, and sources tell the site that the new family of three is overjoyed. "The baby is extremely healthy and is surrounded by friends and family in L.A.," a source told E!. "Anne and Adam are ecstatic to be parents." Hathaway has mostly kept a low profile throughout her pregnancy, and declined to even confirm she was expecting until earlier this year. The actress eventually shared the news with her Instagram followers in an empowering post, showing off her growing bump in a bikini and explaining that she wanted to be the one to take photos of her bundle-to-be -- and not the nearby paparazzi. Hathaway and Shulman appeared together most recently at Vanity Fair's annual post-Oscars party in February, where the glowing actress looked radiant in a gorgeous beaded gown. The pair tied the knot back in 2012, after four years of dating. Congrats to the happy family! [via: E! 'American Idol' Winner and Runner-Up Both Land Record Deals Posted: "American Idol" crowned its latest -- and last, for now -- winner on Thursday night, with 25-year-old Trent Harmon walking away with the coveted season 15 title. But Harmon isn't the only one who scored big in the competition: Both he and "Idol" runner-up La'Porsha Renae have landed record deals. Billboard reports that Harmon has been signed to 19/Big Machine Records, and will record a country album. If that sounds slightly confusing, given that Harmon broke out on "Idol" with a cover of Sia's "Chandelier" and will release the soulful single "Falling" as his first post-"Idol" output, Big Machine Label Group founder and CEO Scott Borchetta said that Harmon's album would be an unusual mashup of styles. According to Billboard, "Borchetta told reporters he envisions Harmon's debut as 'for lack of a better term, that Justin Timberlake country record. Justin ain't going to make it, so we are.'" But the good news doesn't end with Harmon. Renae will join the winner in the Universal Music Group family, and has also signed a record deal, landing her at 19/Big Machine/Motown Records. Borchetta told Billboard that his decision to also extend an offer to Renae -- a common, but certainly not guaranteed, practice when it comes to "Idol" also-rans -- was due to "the overwhelming fan demand and success of the farewell season of 'American Idol.'" "I can't think of a better way to bring this American institution to a close," the exec added. "'American Idol' has always been about the search for a superstar," 19 Entertainment exec Jason Morey explained in a statement to Billboard. "This season, America helped us find two." No release date for either album has been announced yet. [via: Billboard] Photo credit: Getty Images This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'All the President's Men': 10 Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About the Watergate Classic Posted: When "Spotlight" won Best Picture in February, many observers recalled the Academy Awards race of four decades ago, when Watergate saga "All the President's Men" was a top contender. Both movies made heroes out of the dogged reporters who had uncovered earth-shaking scandals, and both films made the often tedious process of journalism into gripping drama without distorting it much. Indeed, until "Spotlight" came along, "All the President's Men" had been considered the best movie ever made about journalism throughout the 40 years since its release, on April 9, 1976. Today, "All the President's Men" is remembered as one of the last landmark movies of Hollywood's 1970s renaissance, and a highlight in the careers of stars Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman. To celebrate the film's 40th anniversary, here are ten things you probably didn't know about "ATPM." 1. Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein were still busy investigating Watergate when Robert Redford first called them to ask about buying the movie rights to their story. The suspicious scribes dismissed the actor's call because they assumed they were being pranked by a staffer on Richard Nixon's Committee to Re-Elect the President (CREEP). 2. Eventually, Redford did buy the rights, hired Alan J. Pakula to direct, and hired William Goldman to write the screenplay. No one much liked Goldman's first draft, so Bernstein wrote his own screenplay with his then-girlfriend, fellow journalist Nora Ephron. That version was deemed even worse, and ultimately, it was a new Goldman rewrite that Pakula shot. Still, we have "All the President's Men" to thank for launching Ephron's career as a screenwriter and, ultimately, the director of such films as "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail." (Of course, she also chronicled her disastrous marriage to Bernstein in the novel and movie "Heartburn.") 3. Indeed, the producers went to extreme lengths to make the movie feel authentic. The Post wouldn't allow the production to film in its newsroom, which would have been disruptive, so the filmmakers spent $450,000 recreating the newsroom in a Hollywood soundstage. Art directors visited the real newsroom and took photos, measurements, and even a brick from the lobby. They replicated out-of-date DC phone books and bought desks from the same supplier the Post used. They even got Post reporters to send them boxes of their own trash, to make the fake newsroom look realistically messy. 4. Frank Wills, the security guard who discovered the Watergate break-in, plays himself in "All the President's Men." 5. The identity of Deep Throat, the key informant named after the then-popular porn movie, remained a secret known only to Woodward, Bernstein, and Post editor Ben Bradlee. (They kept the secret for 33 years, until former FBI deputy director W. Mark Felt outed himself in 2005.) Woodward did help the filmmakers cast Hal Holbrook (above), who bore some resemblance to Felt. Holbrook's performance became legendary, even though he appears in only three scenes. He also uttered the movie's most famous line, "Follow the money" -- a sentence that appears nowhere in Woodward and Bernstein's reporting and was apparently coined by screenwriter Goldman. 6. That famous overhead shot of Redford and Hoffman as two tiny figures poring over vast stacks of records at the Library of Congress lasts for 30 seconds and cost $90,000 to shoot. 7. The movie is so spare and documentary-like that David Shire's musical score doesn't kick in until about 28 minutes into the film. 8. "ATPM" cost $8.5 million to make. It earned back $70.6 million in North America, making it the third highest-grossing film of 1976. 9. The movie was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture (which it lost to "Rocky"), Best Director, Best Editing, and Best Supporting Actress. It won for Best Sound, Best Art Direction, Best Adapted Screenplay (for Goldman), and Best Supporting Actor (for Jason Robards' performance as Bradlee, pictured). 10. "What I took away from watching the movie six years ago," Bernstein said in 2011, "was that most of the good work was done at night. I think, and there are certain exceptions, that you get the truth at night and lies during the day." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
