'The Best of Me' Trailer: A Sexy High School Reunion From Nicholas Sparks

Posted:

Nicholas Sparks is at it again, with his darn heart-tuggin' ways. In "The Best of Me," high school sweethearts are reunited after 20 years apart. James Marsden and Michelle Monaghan star as Dawson and Amanda, whose dreamy small-town love is cut short by Amanda's dad. (Liana Liberato and Luke Bracey play teenage Amanda and Dawson.) Dawson never quite got over their affair, but Amanda's moved on -- until they see each other again, and boom! You know how that goes.

Except, since it's a Sparks novel, there will be plenty of weird twists thrown in to keep our not-so-young lovers on their toes. This trailer emphasizes the soft-focus romantic bits, but nothing is ever that easy in Nicholas Sparks' world. If you saw last year's "Safe Haven," you know just how crazy things can get, so perhaps brace yourselves for something truly bananas to come out of left field.

Director Michael Hoffman, who also adapted the "The Best of Me" for the screen, doesn't have such a bad track record; he adapted and directed "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with Michelle Pfeiffer and Kevin Kline, as well as "The Last Station," with Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer. Hoffman also directed the fabulous "Soapdish." His most recent film was the Coen brothers' non-starter "Gambit," with Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz. These credits might not matter much to mega-fans of Sparks' weepy romances, of course.

"The Best of Me" opens on October 17th.

The Dancers Head to Vegas in New 'Step Up All In' Trailer (VIDEO)

Posted:

It feels like so long ago that Channing Tatum was just another hunky dancer in a movie about dancing teens. Approximately eight years later, Tatum is a mega-star who married his onscreen dance partner, and a new generation of dancers has taken over. And they're going to Vegas, baby, Vegas!

Redonkulously handsome Ryan Guzman ("Step Up Revolution," "Pretty Little Liars," "Jem and the Holograms") puts on his dancing shoes to join Briana Evigan ("Step Up 2: The Streets") and a bunch of other "Step Up" alums to compete for their very own Vegas show. Yeah, this is a far cry from the dainty ballerinas and krumping flash mobs of years past.

This is director Trish Sie's first feature-length film. You might know her work from OK Go's video for "Here It Goes Again," which featured the band in a crazy treadmill routine that Sie choreographed and co-directed. That video snagged a Grammy and has inspired tons of parodies. She's also done commercials and/or viral videos for Levi's, Haagen-Dazs, Sony, and El Pollo Loco.

"Step Up All In" opens on August 8.

50 Cent is a Really Good Sport as 'MaleFiftyCent' on 'Jimmy Kimmel' (VIDEO)

Posted:

50 Cent has been making the rounds lately to promote his latest projects, a TV show called "Power" that will air on Starz and his new album, "Animal Ambition." It's been a mixed bag for 50 lately; he threw out a terrible first pitch at last week's Mets game, but his explanation, which he shared via Reddit earlier this week, was, well, pretty unique. (Hint: He claims he has the sort of shoulder injury you get from continual jerking gestures.) His appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" last night shows both the power of Kimmel's persuasion and 50's ability to laugh at himself.

In "MaleFiftyCent: Get Witch or Die Tryin'," the rapper dons some Angelina Jolie-worthy horns and conjures up some scary green fog. "This s**t just got magical!" In real life, the rapper wrote in his AMA that he'd want to be in a Marvel movie or "Star Wars," given his druthers. His last role was in last year's "Escape Plan," starring Sylvester Stallone as a security expert who must find a way to escape from his own prison. Guess who his helper is? That's right, Arnold Schwarzenegger. 50 Cent will also appear in the upcoming film "The Prince," with Bruce Willis and John Cusack. "The Prince" filmed in December 2013, so it will probably be out... eventually. Until then, enjoy "MaleFiftyCent" from the comfort of your own home.

Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith Split After 18 Years of Marriage

Posted:

Starlite Gala 2013 in Marbella
Love is crazy, y'all, even (or especially) when you're a "Working Girl" and he's a "Desperado." People reports that Melanie Griffith has filed for divorce from Antonio Banderas after 18 years together, which is like 100 years in Hollywood time. They have one daughter together, Stella, who's 17. (Griffith's daughter Dakota Johnson, whose father is Don Johnson, is starring in the upcoming "50 Shades of Grey" adaptation dakas Anastasia Steele.)

Banderas has quite a few films coming up, with the release of "The Expendables 3" this August, the Chilean miner drama "The 33" later this year or in early 2015, and a bunch of other projects in the works. Banderas was slated to direct Griffith in the movie "Akil," but it's unclear if the movie ever actually started filming. They also co-star in the sci-fi drama "Autómata," which is in post-production but doesn't currently have a US distribution date.

Banderas and Griffith met on the set of "Two Much" in 1995, which co-starred Daryl Hannah.

The Singing Nun Who Won Italy's 'The Voice' Will Make Your Day (VIDEO)

Posted:

ITA-MUSIC-TV-VOICE
A little while ago the video of a singing Italian nun, competing on Italy's version of "The Voice" and belting out a soulful rendition of Alicia Keys' "No One" made the rounds and probably made your mom really happy. Well guess what? She won the whole damn thing last night -- and she was wearing all of her gear and everything. Yes, just like Whoopi Goldberg in "Sister Act," except that Whoopi wasn't really a nun! Get with it!

According to the report on Vulture, Sister Cristina Scuccia nabbed a miraculous 62.3% of the vote. When she won she thanked "the man upstairs." And we kind of think she didn't mean crotchety old man Victorrio, who owns the apartment above hers. Watch her below and tell us she didn't deserve it.

Here she is absolutely killing it in the finals:

Bonus! Here she is belting out "What a Feeling" because -- well, just watch:

5 Awesome Ways to Die on 'Game of Thrones'

Posted:

Game of Thrones DeathsIn case you haven't heard, "A Song of Fire and Ice" author George RR Martin is now offering to write fans into his next books -- for a cool $20,000. Naturally, part of the deal is the character will "certainly meet a grisly death" and, well, that got us thinking... how would we want to be axed off?

Here are the 5 coolest ways to die on "Game of Thrones" (spoilers ahead):

Death by Dragon
Alright, admittedly, burning to death definitely sucks, but just to be in the presence of dragons would be pretty amazing. If Martin planned to write me in as one of those goats that get torched (and devoured), then I might have a bone to pick, but dying at the hands wings of a mythological fire-breathing creature would be cool with me.
Game of Thrones Deaths
Trial by Combat
Trial by Combat is one of the most exciting elements of "Game of Thrones." Period. So, what better way to die by the hand of George RR Martin (a.k.a. the Grim Reaper) than in a climatic fight scene with a huge crowd on all sides and the gods watching overhead? I can only hope my death would mean life for a favorite character, too -- but this, of course, will never happen.
Game of Thrones Death
Skull Crushed
I mean... that's a horribly brutal way to die. But, people will be talking about it (ahem you) for a long time after. You just can't unsee that.
Game of Thrones
Death by Poison
While actually dying from poison would be a rough way to go (just look at that purple face), it also means, though, that I was important enough to be secretly and strategically killed. Joffrey may have been a totally worthless human being, but he was King. Men with power get poisoned, butcher's boys are just run down with not a worry in the world.
Game of Thrones
Murdered by Arya
If I'm in any way part of Arya's path to redemption, I'd be happy -- even if that means dying in the process. But, really, Arya has been through endless tragedy and gotten so close to reuniting with family that it's impossible not to root for her revenge. Also, her storyline with the Hound is captivating and arguably the best of the season. All you have to do is listen to their conversations to understand the themes of Season 4. Valar Morghulis.

Luke Skywalker Will Likely Have A Beard In 'Episode VII' (PHOTO)

Mark Hamill Visits Walt Disney World For Star Wars Weekends 2014
Thanks to a context-free publicity photo of Mark Hamill holding a lightsaber and standing next to Mickey Mouse (in his Jedi gear) that honestly has us a little confused, we now know that Luke Skywalker in "Star Wars: Episode VII"... will have a beard. So there's that.

As Entertainment Weekly dutifully points out, Luke Skywalker's old(ish) man beardedness follows in the footsteps of Alec Guinness' Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original film, plus Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn in "The Phantom Menace" (isn't it easy to forget that Liam Neeson was in a "Star Wars" movie? He's got a particular set of Jedi skills). Presumably, this means Luke will be a mentor of some kind to a new batch of Jedis (possibly played by cast members Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, and Adam Driver). That's not too much of a stretch.

"Star Wars: Episode VII," which will undoubtedly feature a whole host of old people wearing interesting facial hair, opens on December 18th, 2015.

'Fault in Our Stars' Director Josh Boone Describes His Long, All-Star Adaptation of 'The Stand'

Posted:

NY Premiere of
Yesterday, I was coming out of a screening at the AMC in Times Square. Kids were already lined up, in snaking rows, for that night's very first showings of "The Fault in Our Stars." That's when I realized that it was going to be a big hit. I also realized that director Josh Boone will be allowed to do anything he wants after it opens. And, as it turns out, he wants to do a big screen adaptation of "The Stand," something that has befuddled and vanquished a number of high profile directors, including Ben Affleck and "Crazy Heart" filmmaker Scott Cooper. Now Boone is talking about his intentions for the adaptation with Vulture, and things are sounding good.

"The Stand," for those that don't know, is an epic, nearly-900 page tome that depicts an apocalyptic viral outbreak and follows the survivors, as they deal with obstacles both earthly and supernatural. It's largely considered King's magnum opus, and is the lynchpin not only of his standalone novel output but also the byzantine world of "The Dark Tower," his series of interconnected fantasy novels.

Boone described the adaptation as follows: "We're gonna do one three-hour, R-rated version with an amazing A-list cast across the board. Every single one of those characters will be somebody you recognize and somebody you relate to. And it's gonna be awesome. I'm really excited. It's the most exciting thing I've ever got to do in my entire life. If 12-year-old me had ever known that one day I'd be doing this, to even just go back and look at that kid, I'd be like, Keep doing what you're doing! It's just crazy. I've met so many actors over the years, and like, when I met Stephen King, I hugged him with tears in my eyes. He meant that much to me when I was young. I still say everything I learned about writing I learned from Stephen King. I don't read screenplays. I don't read screenplay how-to books. It's always just, establish the character. Establish the character."

Well, this is somewhat optimistic, we suppose. If everything can come together. But this thing has beaten better filmmakers than Boone, so a note of cautiousness should be struck.

'Game of Thrones' Author George RR Martin Will Kill You Off For $20,000

Posted:

The Television Academy Of Arts And Sciences' Presents An Evening With
Money burning a hole in your pocket? "Game of Thrones" fan? Well, today is your lucky day. George RR Martin, author of the "A Song of Fire and Ice" series that "Game of Thrones" is based on, wants to write you in to his upcoming novel and then brutally kill you off. For a sizable chunk of change, of course.

In an effort to raise money for the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary and the Food Depot in New Mexico, the fantasy writer is asking people to donate through a Prizeo campaign. And with big spending comes big (and totally awesome) rewards.

If you donate $20,000, a character named after you will be featured in the next installment of the books. But wait -- there's more! You will be able to choose you character's station in the fictional world and then "certainly meet a grisly death." Sweet.

Contributors to the campaign will also be entered to win a trip to Santa Fe to hang with George himself and visit the Sanctuary via helicopter. Naturally, you'll be able to chat him up about the book and ask for "Game of Thrones" spoilers. (We can't guarantee he'll respond to that request, though.)

Watch his video below to see what the whole thing is all about and find out more rewards on the Prizeo page:

'Edge of Tomorrow' Review: Should You See the Tom Cruise Blockbuster?

Posted:

Film Review Edge of Tomorrow

As you've probably heard, "Edge of Tomorrow" has been blowing critics' minds. It's easily one of the most fun films of this summer blockbuster season. This latest sci-fi/action/whizbang movie to star Tom Cruise has a ton going for it -- plenty of action, great effects, a clever storyline, and committed performances from the leads, along with assured orchestration of all these elements from a well-regarded director.

But, wait, I hate Tom Cruise!
First of all, you shouldn't hate the guy. Beyond the lunatic antics on talk shows, there's not a performer out there who seems more committed to doing whatever it takes to give wide audiences a fun experience at the cinema. As a film nerd I can applaud his work with Kubrick in "Eyes Wide Shut," but at the same time I can celebrate his more visceral thrills brought out via a slew of "Mission Impossible" films, his fighter-jock performance in "Top Gun," or even his take last year in the pretty if pretty silly "Oblivion."

There's a delightfully irony-free way that he plunges into these films, a kind of zealous commitment; he cranks it to 11 when things turn bad. When he runs, you feel him running, his outstretched fingers carving the air like razor blades, his cries to action piercing through the myriad explosions. We have plenty of guys who can wink at the audience, letting us know that they're in a make-believe environment. Yet with Cruise there's an almost old-fashioned, balls-to-the-wall portrayal that's free from any snark.

OK, fine. But is this all 'splosions, all the time?
Sure, the film isn't quite (the stunning) "Looper," with its twists and turns and toying with time travel, but "Edge of Tomorrow" is still a pretty exquisitely constructed tale. Based on a Japanese book titled "All You Need Is Kill" (a title that the studio felt was a bit too brutal for American audiences), it's the tale of a soldier co-opted to fight a bunch of alien invaders, only to find himself killed quite quickly after the beach invasion. Waking up again hours before he was to set off, he finds himself in a time-loop, forced to relive his last moments over and over again until he gets it right.

Sounds like a video game, or "Groundhog Day."
Well, yeah, it is. There's plenty of video-gamey stuff about the plot, but that's in no way a detraction from the storytelling. In fact, the film is quite canny about how it deals with this repetition. Furthermore, Cruise himself does a remarkable job at attenuating his performance through the various cycles, developing a callousness as the story creeps forward with each iteration. Like "Groundhog Day," there's more going on here than just the chrono-shtick. The repetition allows one to build character at the same time as advancing plot, making for a more thorough and rich storyline.

So, is this just an all-boys club?
Perhaps the most kick-ass character in the film is played by Emily Blunt (a veteran, it should be noted, of that "Looper" flick we talked about before). She's come a long way since "The Devil Wears Prada," and has developed into an actress very much at home within the fantastical. Her physicality in this film is a nice match for Cruise's, and it never feels like parody or simple tokenism the way that it often does in films of this genre. While not as iconic, obviously, I think that Sigourney Weaver's Ripley would get along with Blunt's Rita Vrataski just fine.

Other than Blunt, we get a pretty decent ensemble. Like Blunt's "Looper" echo, Bill Paxton's appearance is reminiscent of his role in James Cameron's "Aliens." The hard-nosed Master Sergeant becomes one of the main human obstacles for Cruise, and it's fun to see how this dynamic changes as the storyline loops on itself.

Brendan Gleeson plays General Brigham, and he last worked with Cruise on the Irish Romance "Far and Away," so it's hard to see just what connection one would like to draw between those two projects. We also get a bunch of guys named "Griff" and "Kuntz," hard-sounding names for a bunch of Joes that are led to the slaughter.

Any other stories that the film rips off?
Well, of course, as any good film should. "Starship Troopers" seems like a reference, if only for the way these "mimic" aliens swarm around. The landing is evocative of the D-Day landing (the film's release is actually tied to the 70th anniversary of "Operation Overlord"), so comparisons to "Saving Private Ryan" are pretty apt. There's even a "Children of Men" vibe to the final scenes, but that might be stretching it a bit too far.

At any rate, director Doug Liman continues to show some great stuff here, drawing upon what has come before, while very much making it its own thing.

Who is this Liman fellow?
Liman got his start doing a couple quirky, indie films like the bros-in-Vegas dramedy "Swingers" or the flashback-filled "Go." He's done a bunch of passable action flicks like "Jumper" and "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," and launched the "Bourne" franchise (and changed the Bond-myth for the foreseeable future) with "The Bourne Identity."

To Liman's credit, the film never feels showy, never lingering on a particular set piece or cleverly constructed visual. The pace is kinetic, sure, but it never feels harried. Yes, there's some handheld stuff to provide some visceral action, but it never devolves into nausea cam. Most importantly, for a film that does a whole bunch of hopping around in time, it's thoroughly coherent, never losing sight of where it needs to be, and providing subtle visual clues via consistent angles or performance quirks that immediately situate the viewer.

So, this sounds pretty good...
I think it's much better than pretty good. Cruise hasn't been in a film this effective in years, and for that alone it's to be celebrated. Once again, Cruise seems the last of a breed, a guy still committed to these original sci-fi stories that push a bit at the boundaries of modern spectacle filmmaking. In a summer filled with guys in tights drawn from 10-cent comic books, it's nice to see these original stories still get made. Given the almost $200 million budget and half that again spent on marketing, you need someone with the star luminosity of Cruise to crank out a film of this nature these days. Given all that, however, they still need to pull it off, and I'm very pleased to see the filmmakers have done just that.

With a smart, effective adaptation by "Usual Suspects" scribe Christopher McQuarrie along with Jez and John-Henry Butterworth (the guys that wrote the Valerie Plame biopic "Fair Game"), a great cast, lovely visuals and strong direction, there's a lot to love about "Edge of Tomorrow." For all those that complain they don't make them like they used to, I recommend you get to the biggest screen you can find, buy copious amounts of popcorn, and enjoy this slice of summer movie-going fun.

"Edge of Tomorrow" is now playing in theatres.

Shailene Woodley Facts: 17 Things You (Probably) Don't Know About the Young Star

Posted:

Shailene Woodley Facts
Young star Shailene Woodley came out of nowhere to turn heads in Alexander Payne's "The Descendants" and she hasn't slowed down since.

Woodley's critically-acclaimed performance opposite George Clooney in 2011's most talked about indie has propelled the actress to stardom and plenty of starring roles, such as in "The Spectacular Now" (2013) and "White Bird in a Blizzard" (2014). The films proved she could carry a movie and, in turn, have led Woodley to become the face of the popular "Divergent" franchise. This summer, the actress plays a cancer patient in love in the acclaimed weep-fest "The Fault in Our Stars."

From her unusual toothpaste substitute to her iconic (yet deleted) superhero role, here are 17 things you probably don't know about Shailene Woodley.

1. Woodley was born on November 15, 1991, in Simi Valley, California to Lori and Lonnie Woodley.

2. Lonnie is a school principal, while Lori is a middle school counselor.

3. When Woodley was four, she kicked off her career through commercial modeling.

4. It was only a few years before she made her screen debut in the 1999 TV movie "Replacing Dad."

5. In 2001, she also auditioned for the starring role in "I Am Sam" opposite Sean Penn, but lost out to Dakota Fanning.

6. Woodley stayed busy and even appeared in several episodes of the hit show "The O.C." (2003) as the young Kaitlin Cooper.

7. Prior to landing the starring role in "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" on ABC Family, the young actress considered studying interior design at New York University.

8. She stuck with acting and soon broke out in Alexander Payne's "The Descendants" (2011) as George Clooney's troubled daughter.

9. As a result, she won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female and also received a Golden Globe nomination.

10. The scene (in "The Descendants") in which Woodley's character cries in the pool was her idea. The script originally read: "she goes underwater and contorts her face."

11. Since then, the young actress has received several starring roles, including one in the blockbuster "Divergent" franchise, where she plays Tris Prior.

12. She also played Mary Jane Watson in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (2014). Think we're kidding? She even dyed her hair red for the part, but ultimately her four short scenes were cut from the film.

13. That's not the only time she's disappeared! She reportedly told her agent and other representation that she was going camping in New Zealand, only to stay in Los Angeles unburdened and uninterrupted for two months. Well played, Ms. Woodley.

14. Known for her free-spirited ways, Woodley also brushes her teeth with clay and swishes sesame oil in her mouth for 20 minutes to whiten them.

15. It doesn't stop there, though! She gave her house to her grandma because Woodley felt she wasn't getting enough use out of it. The actress now crashes on friends' couches when she's back in LA.

16. Everything she owns fits in a carry-on suitcase...

17. Bonus fact: At the age of 15, this 5' 8" beauty was diagnosed with scoliosis and had to wear a back brace for two years to straighten her spine.

'Ghostbusters' Cast: Where Are They Now? (PHOTOS)

Posted:

Ghostbusters Where Are They NowWho you gonna call?

For 30 years, since the release of "Ghostbusters" on June 8, 1984, the supernatural exterminators have been among the most reliable of film stars; after all, the movie and its 1989 sequel seem to have been looping on TV continuously for three decades. Still, plans for a reunion have been stymied -- by a long script development process, by Bill Murray's reluctance to participate, and now, by Harold Ramis's death in February 2014. With the oft-slimed ghoul-grapplers scattered to the winds, it's time to catch up with the original cast of "Ghostbusters."
