If Movies Can Only Be Judged 10 Years Later, What Is the Best Movie of 2004? Posted: 30 Apr 2014 08:00 PM PDT "I think films shouldn't even be judged until 10 years have passed." Francis Ford Coppola said that in a new interview in Empire magazine (h/t The Playlist), and while it means we don't get to really call Twixt a piece of crap until 2021, it is a good way to look at cinema. I don't know if it's necessarily good for us film critics, as the readers don't want to wait a decade to hear if The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is any good, but for real consideration of films that's a good amount of time. The director, whose The Godfather Part II was panned by the New York Times upon release, notes that many movies received negatively at first go on to be regarded as classics. It makes sense why so many of my colleagues appear to love Jonathan Glazer's... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
5 Documentaries from the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival to Watch For Posted: 30 Apr 2014 07:00 PM PDT People still try to make the claim that the Tribeca Film Festival lacks an identity. That's a dismissal of at least its reputation for continually programming great documentaries. In addition to its annual Alex Gibney premiere (this time it was the work-in-progress debut of his untitled James Brown doc), the festival also shows a ton of exceptional nonfiction features from around the world, including some well-made domestic works about such interesting subjects as Lego bricks, bitcoin and bronies (see my review of the last one here). These are subjects that have certain appeal to built-in audiences and could easily be the kind of film where content trumps quality, but here even the docs that don't need to be good are still pretty good. Plus, it's nice to... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Comics on Film: Pessimistic About 'Justice League'? Don't Be! Posted: 30 Apr 2014 06:00 PM PDT After months of speculation, double-talk, denials and unofficial "confirmations," word has finally come down Warner Bros. is going to create its answer to The Avengers with what was once the more famous big superhero team: DC Comics' Justice League. On the heels of the as-yet-untitled Man of Steel sequel - featuring Batman, Wonder Woman and now Cyborg - Justice League will reunite cast members Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot with director Zack Snyder. Reaction to the news has been polarizing, to say the least. Some fans cite that it's too similar to Marvel's film slate to have any unique value. Others are generally cautious of the studio's ability to either build a universe or to properly exploit... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
New 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Trailer: Check Out Donatello and Shredder Posted: 30 Apr 2014 04:52 PM PDT Update: A new trailer for the film has hit online, and while it's very similar to the first trailer, it does contain actual footage of Donatello and Shredder. Check it out: If there's one upcoming 2014 movie that fans are most curious about in terms of what characters will actually look like, it's that Michael Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. This is a film that will sort of reinvent the Turtles in their first live-action movie since 1993. It reintroduces a different version of their arch nemesis Shredder (William Fichter), with Megan Fox playing April O'Neil and Will Arnett as O'Neil's trusty cameraman Vern Fenwick. It also seems like we'll get a new backstory for the Turtles too -- one that strengthens their ties to Shredder and... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Get Your First Look at One of Schwarzenegger's Fellow Terminators in 'Terminator: Genesis' Posted: 30 Apr 2014 04:00 PM PDT Unless you're Dwayne Johnson or one of the other buff actors he's trained, you have no reason to know the name of bodybuilder, former Marine and Mr. New Orleans winner Aaron Williamson. You may be more familiar with the name T-800, which was the model number of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator in James Cameron's original film. Two years from now, however, Aaron Williamson's name and the T-800 may be going hand in hand. Williamson has been cast in the upcoming Terminator: Genesis in an undisclosed role, but a note he wrote to friends and family to tell them about the new job has spread around the Web, and it confirms that he'll be playing a T-800 in the film: "Thanks to an amazing team of people who help me get better each week, both... See 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Reviewed in Comic Strip Form Posted: 30 Apr 2014 03:00 PM PDT What better way to review a comic movie than with a comic! The Geek Beat: 13 Great, Geeky Embodiments of the Summer Movie Posted: 30 Apr 2014 01:10 PM PDT There are few things sweeter than the reassuring gust of cool air that greets you when step out of the blazing hot, summer sun and enter a movie theater. When the heat and humidity team up to make life unbearable, the promise of a few hours of air-conditioned bliss while watching the latest blockbuster with an outrageously large fountain drink at arm's reach is, well... it's the sort of thing that can bring a tear to even the most jaded cinephile's eye. While the growing ubiquity of air-conditioning has made the hottest days a little more tolerable with each passing year, I can't help feeling a little nostalgic rush every time summer movie season rolls around. From my early, hazy memories of a snowy battle in The Empire Strikes Back to the more recent thrill of... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
