The Schmoes Know Movie Show: The Top 5 Female Ensembles in Movies

Posted: 25 Apr 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Who are the Schmoes, and what exactly do they know? The Schmoes are a couple of regular guys, Kristian Harloff and Mark Ellis, who--like you--are the people for whom movies are made. Each week, we're posting brand new video from the Schmoes that'll give their spin on a given movie topic. On this week's episode of the Schmoes Know Movie Show, the guys count down their top five favorite female ensembles in movies, in honor of this week's new release The Other Woman.                 MORE FROM AROUND THE WEB:                 ZergNet (function() { var zergnet = document.createElement('script'); zergnet.type...

The Best Movie Trailers of the Week

Posted: 25 Apr 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Welcome to the first installment of Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we cherry-pick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past few days. 1. The Giver This new 60-second piece for The Giver doesn’t completely fix the issues in the first trailer, but it does manage to suggest the book-to-film adaptation still has a chance. The use of black-and-white footage isn’t particularly well woven into the material, but it is there and it’s effective thanks to sharper editing and an effective representation of the strikingly powerful and unnerving tone.    2. Let’s Be Cops Even though the latest trailer for Let’s Be Cops reuses quite a bit of footage from the first promo, it still works because the pace...

Greg Nicotero Regrets He Couldn't Make 'The Stand,' May Make a Feature with 'Walking Dead' Creator

Posted: 25 Apr 2014 03:00 PM PDT

For several decades now, Greg Nicotero has been using his impressive brand of special effects to bring to cinematic life the impossible for directors like Steven Spielberg, Wes Craven, Paul Thomas Anderson, John Carpenter, Eli Roth, Quentin Tarantino, Michael Mann, Michael Bay and Robert Rodriguez. Basically, if you've seen a gnarly piece of makeup in a high-profile movie anytime in the last 20 years, he or his company probably had a hand in it.  Nicotero doesn't only do movies, though. He's also responsible for the unbelievably good zombie effects on The Walking Dead (a show he's now an executive producer on), and he delivered the very cool, very practical makeup effects for the vampires on From Dusk till Dawn: The Series. We spoke to him earlier...

What 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Does Better Than Other Superhero Movies

Posted: 25 Apr 2014 02:00 PM PDT

After an explosive opening action sequence involving Peter Parker's mysterious parents, we're zoomed in on the back of Spider-Man's costume as he free-falls between New York's massive skyscrapers. Within seconds he's slinging from building to building, weaving in and out of the city streets with ease. There's a bull-headed criminal on the loose--this one played by Paul Giamatti, doing his best Russian mobster--and he's barreling through vehicles in an armored truck, wreaking havoc. But Spider-Man's right on his tail, flipping over cars, saving pedestrians, and defeating the bad guys once again with humor and the most mind-boggling, circus-like maneuvers. There are a few of these moments scattered throughout The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and...

Remember FX Legend Stan Winston with This Very Cool Tribute Video

Posted: 25 Apr 2014 01:00 PM PDT

It’s hard to believe that this summer will mark the six-year anniversary of the legendary Stan Winston’s passing. The FX icon was responsible for some of cinema’s most magical creations, and his death back in 2008 has left an unfillable void in the world of special effects work, and in the hearts of film geeks everywhere. The outpouring of sadness over Winston losing his battle with multiple myeloma was massive – and this tribute video was one of the best things to emerge from the Internet’s collective grief. It’s easy to forget how many films Winston worked on over the years – classics like Jurassic Park, Aliens and The Terminator, to lesser known (but no less loved) titles like Pumpkinhead. This video pays tribute to not only the...

'Boyhood' Trailer: This May Be One of the Most Ambitious Movies You'll Ever See

Posted: 25 Apr 2014 12:05 PM PDT

The first trailer for Richard Linklater's Boyhood just dropped, and now's your chance to catch a glimpse of the movie so many critics have been gushing over ever since it first premiered back at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival in January. The selling point on Boyhood is that it's this once-in-a-lifetime kinda movie that was shot over the course of 12 years so that the characters could all age naturally and evolve with the story. Not only is it an incredible thing to watch unfold, but the story itself--a time-capsule full of songs, gadgets and memories of a time gone by--is poignant and gut-wrenching in ways you've probably never experienced because no one's ever really attempted something like this before. Check out the trailer below. From my Sundance...

'From Dusk till Dawn: The Series' Is About to Go Insane and We've Got Picture Proof

Posted: 25 Apr 2014 11:00 AM PDT

The most pivotal moment in the original From Dusk till Dawn movie is when the vampires come out to play. Up until that point, it's a fugitives-on-the-run story, but after Salma Hayek hypnotizes everyone in the room with her dancing, the fangs come out, everything is dialed to 11 and it gives us one of the most memorable chunks of film from any horror movie in the '90s. Well, next week's episode of From Dusk till Dawn: The Series is the show's equivalent of that moment. And while we're embargoed and can't say much further, we will say that if you thought the show couldn't live up to the fun, bizarre, vampire-killing violence of the original just because it's on TV, then you are wrong. It definitely goes big, and we love it. If you're behind and...
