Pierce Brosnan Isn't Happy With His James Bond Performance Posted: Irish actor Pierce Brosnan seemed like a natural fit for James Bond, the suave British spy he played in four films throughout the '90s and early 2000s. But Brosnan doesn't agree, revealing in a recent interview that he can't bring himself to watch the movies anymore because his performance is "just never good enough." The actor made those startling statements while speaking with the U.K.'s Daily Telegraph, admitting that while the stardom the franchise brought him afforded him the freedom to pursue passion projects and start a production company, he was never quite comfortable in the role. "I felt I was caught in a time warp between Roger [Moore] and Sean [Connery]," Brosnan said. "It was a very hard one to grasp the meaning of, for me. The violence was never real, the brute force of the man was never palpable. It was quite tame, and the characterisation didn't have a follow-through of reality, it was surface. But then that might have had to do with my own insecurities in playing him as well. ... I have no desire to watch myself as James Bond. 'Cause it's just never good enough." But while Brosnan said that that realization is "a horrible feeling," he added that his aversion to his Bond portrayal hasn't stopped him from pursuing similar characters and films in the spy and action genres. "There's enough time between my being James Bond and now," he told the Telegraph. "Daniel [Craig] is James Bond; I was James Bond; I think there's enough room on the stage to elbow my way in and find some audience." Stephen Colbert Set for April 22 'Late Show' Appearance Posted: There may not be an official start date yet for his new gig as David Letterman's replacement on "The Late Show," but Stephen Colbert will soon be able to introduce himself to the show's audience when he makes an appearance on the program next week. CBS just announced that Colbert will stop by "The Late Show" next Tuesday, April 22 to chat with Letterman. It will be Colbert's first official interview since accepting the job last week. Letterman announced his plan for retirement earlier this month, telling viewers that he would step down from the show he created when his contract expires in 2015. Colbert's name was quickly circulated as a possible replacement, and CBS announced their selection of the "Colbert Report" host only one week later. "Simply being a guest on David Letterman's show has been a highlight of my career," Colbert said in a statement last week. "I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave's lead. I'm thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth." Colbert has signed a five-year deal with the network, though it's still unclear when exactly he'll start his new job. Maybe he and Letterman will discuss more specific timetables when they sit down with each other next week. Tracy Morgan Is 'Concerned' About Alec Baldwin Posted: In a sign that things might truly have hit rock bottom for Alec Baldwin, his former "30 Rock" co-star, Tracy Morgan, says that he's worried about the actor. Morgan, who's no stranger to controversy himself, said in an interview with the New York Times that Baldwin's recent troubles -- skirmishes with paparazzi, losing his MSNBC talk show, vowing to retreat from public life then starring in an episode of "Law and Order: SVU" -- have raised some red flags. "He was concerned about the structure of my life, and now I'm concerned about the structure of his life," Morgan told the Times. "He's getting fired from TV shows. He had about six fights since we left '30 Rock,' you know. I'm worried about him. I mellowed out, my daughter mellowed me out, and I don't get mad at anyone." The comedian also offered some advice to Baldwin about how he can turn things around. "Chill out, raise your family and enjoy your wife and your daughter," Morgan said. "The paparazzi do what they do, man. They have a job, too." Or perhaps Baldwin can take a cue from Morgan's wacky "30 Rock" character, Tracy Jordan, and just go full-on crazy. It may not be great for his mental well-being, but it sure would be entertaining for those of us who miss the zany "30 Rock" gang. There's a 'Frozen' Merchandise Shortage, and Parents Are Freaking Out Posted: Crying kids, fistfights, and lies about terminally ill children have become the norm at the Disney Store in New York City's Times Square, thanks to a global shortage of merchandise from the hit animated musical "Frozen." The New York Post reports that the store has received countless requests for "Frozen"-related items -- Elsa and Anna dolls and replicas of the characters' costumes are the hottest commodities -- but is currently almost completely out of stock of all merchandise from the film. Customers that come in looking for specific items leave disappointed, the Post reports, and that disappointment is inspiring some rather ridiculous behavior. "People have gotten into physical fights in the morning," one Disney Store employee told the paper. "The kids cry, but the parents are the problem. They try to guilt us, say their daughters are sick. They have no shame. But I can't make it magically appear!" And the problem isn't isolated to New York City. Parents can't even find "Frozen" merchandise online, the Post reports, spending hundreds of dollars on single items that have become completely scarce since the film exploded in popularity late last year, and has since become the eighth-highest grossing movie of all time. "We're now at the stage where the demand is almost being driven by the scarcity because of the social status attached to being able to find it," said toy industry analyst Sean McGowan, who compared the "Frozen" frenzy to the Cabbage Patch Kid craze of the 1980s. "Being someone who had a Cabbage Patch [Kid] meant you were loved more than the others. It was social status and elite achievement that came with finding this rare gem." While the Post reports that some parents think Disney intentionally under-produced merchandise to drum up demand, analysts say that the company would sell more if it could, and may not have ordered an excess of product due to poor-performing merchandise from past animation releases like "The Princess and the Frog" and "Brave." "We knew this movie was a winner, but it overperformed so significantly that now we're doing what we can to get in more product as soon as we can," Erin Barrier, a Disney Store spokesperson, told the Post. That may not be soon enough for some parents of "Frozen"-obsessed kids, though, who'll have to wait until as late as August for some items to be fully restocked. In the meantime, some moms are trading or selling coveted merchandise through Facebook groups, and others are paying upwards of $1,000 for dolls and $400 for dresses bought on eBay and Amazon. "You want your kids to be happy, but at the same time, what are you willing to do, what are you willing to pay?" one exasperated mother told the Post. "It's really dumb. We should probably just learn to say 'no' more often. But it's so difficult when they are so obsessed with the current movie." Sounds like these kids and parents might need to take a lesson from "Let It Go" and...well, you know. The 'Magic Mike' Sequel Release Date Revealed Posted: Next summer, it will be your patriotic duty to see "Magic Mike XXL": The sequel is set for release on July 3, 2015. Studio Warner Bros. announced the schedule this week for the follow-up to the 2012 male stripper flick that starred Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, and a whole bunch of greased-up, gyrating guys. Tatum is returning for "XXL," which, like "Magic Mike," will be loosely based on events from his own life. While Tatum had once considered directing "XXL," the original's first assistant director, Greg Jacobs, will be taking the helm, following in Steven Soderbergh's footsteps. Tatum started work on the script earlier this year, and joked that he was taking inspiration from McConaughey for the sequel. As for the plot, Tatum said last year that it would be more lighthearted than the first film. "It will be a road-trip movie, and it will essentially be the movie that everyone thought the first one was going to be: crazy and fun and less slice-of-life and less drama," Tatum told THR last June. "The first one, we had to make not so cheesy and campy; this one we are going to swing for the fences." [via First Showing] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'The Wolf of Wall Street' Honest Trailer Is Perfectly Excessive (VIDEO) Posted: "The Wolf of Wall Street" is the latest movie to get the Honest Trailer treatment from Screen Junkies, and it's excessively awesome. Focusing on the abundance of bad language, nudity, and pretty much any other vice you could imagine, the trailer takes jabs at the incredible excess of Martin Scorsese's latest collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio -- right down to its three hour running time. Whether you're a fan of "The Wolf of Wall Street" or the Honest Trailers, this parody is sure to have you howling with laughter. Yeah, we said it. Jason Lee and Jeremy London co-star, but Shannen Doherty, Ben Affleck, Jason Mewes, and even Stan Lee show up for some fun. IN or OUT: "Mallrats" and/or SModcast diehards will be thrilled that this is finally on Blu-ray. "Reality Bites" (20th Anniversary Edition) What's It About? Ben Stiller directed and co-stars in this little comedy about a bunch of twenty-somethings trying to figure out their lives after college. (This was before the Internet.) People are still arguing over whom the babely Lelaina (Winona Ryder) should have picked as her paramour, Michael (Stiller) the businessman or Troy (Ethan Hawke) the poet? IN or OUT: Do you want to own Lisa Loeb's video "Stay" on Blu-ray? Done and done. "Touch of Evil" What's It About? Orson Welles nearly outdid himself with this fantastic film noir -- after all, it's hard to outdo "Citizen Kane." Still, he came pretty close! Channing Tatum as Gambit? It's Closer to Happening Than You Think Posted: After hinting for several months that he's interested in the part, actor Channing Tatum has revealed that he's already met with producers about playing the mutant Gambit in an "X-Men" spin-off film, making the movie that much closer to a done deal. In an interview with MTV, Tatum confirmed that he's spoken with Lauren Shuler Donner, who's produced every single one of Fox's "X-Men" films, about the possibility of playing Gambit, and added that he "would love it" if the film came together. The actor made waves last year when he talked about wanting to portray the mutant, and Donner said earlier this year that she was eyeing Tatum on the project. Reiterating similar comments he made to Empire magazine last year, Tatum told MTV why he enjoys the character so much. "Gambit is really the only X-Man I've ever loved," he said. "I mean, I've loved them all, they're all great, but I guess from being down south -- my dad's from Louisiana, I'm from Mississippi, Alabama, Florida -- I don't know. I just related to him. He's just kind of suave. ... He's the most un-X-Men X-Man that's ever been in X-Men. Other than maybe Wolverine, who's like the anti-hero. He's a thief. He's not even a hero. He's kind of walking the line of gray. ... He loves women and drinking and smoking and stuff so he's just a cool guy who happens to have a moral center." As for how soon a Gambit spinoff might be on the big screen, Tatum admitted that Fox had yet to greenlight the project -- but he's still keeping his hopes up. "I hope it [comes together]," the actor said. "You never know, it's a weird industry. If the stars align, I would die to play it. I'm already working on the accent. It's crappy at the moment." Seeing as how Donner has already said she wants to make a bunch of "X-Men" spinoffs, we can't imagine Fox would turn down Tatum and Gambit. Our fingers are crossed that we'll get to hear the actor's crappy accent soon. [via MTV, h/t Coming Soon] Photo by Frederick M. This Aaron Sorkin Fast Food Parody Is Hilariously Accurate (VIDEO) Posted: In this Sorkin parody titled "The Foodroom," comedian Amy Schumer brings Emmy-winning writer Aaron Sorkin's distinctive style to a fast food joint -- with hilarious results. Sorkin is known for his critical hits "The West Wing" and "The Newsroom," but over the years, and he's become just as well known for his snappy, witty dialogue, walk-and-talk exchanges, and elaborate monologues -- almost to a fault. Paired up with Sorkin vet Josh Charles ("Sports Night"), Schumer skillfully throws Sorkin's brand of highbrow drama into a greasy kitchen and, well, it's magic. Paul Walker's Brothers Will Be His Stand-ins in 'Fast & Furious 7' Posted: After months of speculation, studio Universal has confirmed that the brothers of the late Paul Walker will stand in for the star to help complete "Fast & Furious," which was in the midst of production at the time of Walker's death in November. In a statement addressed to fans of the franchise, Universal said that Caleb and Cody Walker would be "helping [filmmakers] complete some remaining action for their brother and fill in small gaps left in production." As for what those gaps might entail, the statement didn't specify, though TheWrap reports that Caleb and Cody will "fill in for Walker during select scenes and ... computer graphics would be used to mask any discrepancies between their bodies and his. The brothers will not be replacing Walker throughout the movie." Walker was killed in a single-car crash in Los Angeles on November 30 during a break in production on "Fast 7." His death shut down the film for a time as those involved scrambled to figure out how -- or if -- to proceed with the project without one of its biggest stars. The full statement from Universal is below. "Fast and Furious 7," starring Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, and Tyrese Gibson and directed by James Wan, is set for release on April 10, 2015. Here Are the Best Parts of Harrison Ford's Reddit AMA Posted: Harrison Ford is usually thought of as delightfully grumpy based on his TV appearances, but his Reddit AMA over the weekend was full of fun and funny nuggets. (Ford was promoting a Showtime series about climate change that aired over the weekend.) Here are a few of the highlights! And as an extra treat, check out Ford playing "Uncharted 3" in Japan a few years ago. You're welcome in advance. 1. Harrison Ford doesn't have ophidiophobia, thank you very much. Ford's famously fedora'd alter ego Indiana Jones is notoriously scared of snakes. Ford himself? Not so much. "I actually like snakes! When I was young, I was a boy scout nature camp counselor, and one of our projects was collecting snakes and creating an environment for them, so I'm quite familiar with snakes and think they'r[e] fantastic creatures." 2. Han Solo is pretty handy around the house. Ford was sort of working as a carpenter when he was offered the role of Han Solo in "Star Wars," although he was also trying to make a living as an actor. "I had a house at the time I wanted to remodel, a bit of the wreck of a house. I'd invest money in tools but wouldn't have money for materials, so I realized this was another way of putting food on the table. And allowing me to pick and choose from the acting jobs that were being offered at the time." 3. He still hasn't seen "Anchorman 2." Ford seemed pretty unimpressed when he was talking about his cameo in "Anchorman 2" a few months ago on Jimmy Kimmel's show. Although it sounds like it was more fun than he'd originally let on, he still hasn't popped "Anchorman 2" in the old DVD player. "It was goofy. I hadn't seen 'Anchorman,' it was only one day's work, and I knew that it was very popular, and I admired the talents of the people involved, so I went to do it and had a great time, I enjoyed it. I still haven't seen it though." 4. "The Expendables 3" was convenient. Ford didn't seem particularly jazzed about his part in "The Expendables 3" when on Jimmy Kimmel's show, but it turned out OK. "I was on my way to Indonesia to do 'Years of Living Dangerously,' and halfway around the world. And the location for Expendables was right on the way, and they asked me for a relatively short period of time, and it seemed like fun. I hadn't seen the films but I looked one of them and [I] thought it was kind of funny, so I thought why not?" Why not, indeed. 5. Harrison Ford won't divulge secrets! If you have a secret you need to keep, Ford is your guy. The two most pressing questions about his career surely have to be who shot first at the Mos Eisley Cantina and whether or not Deckard was a replicant in "Blade Runner." As for the first question, he doesn't care, which means we'll be arguing about this over beer until the end of time. The "Blade Runner" question is deeper and more meaningful, and guess what? He'll never tell. "I think that it's a wonderful storytelling mechanism for that question to be left unanswered," he wrote, before quickly folding an origami unicorn and eating it. 6. He's having a better time than we think. That whole Jimmy Kimmel thing is just one instance of Ford appearing to be uncomfortable about being on TV, at best. He'd like the set the record straight; he's having fun but just not smiling or anything. He wrote, "Oh no, in most cases, those guys are so talented and so funny. I don't hate it at all, in fact it's interesting you would think that because I usually have a really good time. I'm there to bring attention to some project that's about to be released, and it's great to be able to take advantage of that to bring attention to bring attention to the film." 7. Will Deckard be back? Even though Ford said that "Blade Runner" "was maybe the hardest set I've ever worked on" he'd still be happy to return to Ridley Scott's rainy world. "I'm quite curious and excited about seeing a new script for Blade Runner if in fact the opportunity would exist to do another, if it's a good script I would be very anxious to work with Ridley Scott again, he's a very talented and passionate filmmaker. And I think it would be very interesting to revisit the character." Maybe then we'll finally find out if androids dream of electric sheep. Get Ready for These 'Star Trek' Live Events Posted: What with all the digital content at moviegoers' fingertips, it can be difficult to get bodies into theaters. As Noel Murray at The Dissolve points out, one solution to our always-on culture could be to offer "more one-of-a-kind live performance elements to the theatrical experience." Bringing moviegoers to other venues, like drive-ins and outdoor screenings in the summer, are attractive options, but they're still pretty casual, and it's even easier to whip out your iThing midway through and start playing Candy Crush without anyone noticing. The folks behind the "Star Trek" franchise are setting up some seriously classy events for fans in the hopes of luring them to venues where your little glowing white screen will get you more than a few glares. People in London, Houston, San Diego, Philly, Toronto, and even Lucerne, Switzerland, will get a chance to see "Star Trek" and "Star Trek Into Darkness" accompanied by live orchestras in big fancy concert halls. Naturally, "Star Trek: Live in Concert" will play in San Diego during Comic-Con, although whether or not this will lure fanboys and fangirls out into the sunshine is anyone's guess. If you're really into seeing movies with live performances, you'll want to bookmark Movies In Concert, which tracks events all over the world. You can also check out StarTrek.com for official dates. Mia Wasikowska Is Out of This World in the 'Maps to the Stars' Trailer (VIDEO) Posted: Mia Wasikowska is having a very cool 2014, with outstanding roles in "The Double" and "Only Lovers Left Alive." The cherry on top might be David Cronenberg's latest film, "Maps to the Stars," where she plays a mysterious woman named Agatha Weiss. The very NSFW trailer for "Maps to the Stars," which is still in post-production, gives us a glimpse of the uglier side of Los Angeles. A glamorous actress named Havana Segrand (Julianne Moore) is fuming after being passed over for a major role and shares some rather colorful details about how the starlet got ahead in Hollywood. Jerome (Robert Pattinson) is a sexy young limo driver who assures Havana she's still hot in the most obvious way you could imagine. The appearance of Agatha (Wasikowska) in Havana's life alarms Havana's hands-on therapist Dr. Stafford Weiss (John Cusack), who seems especially concerned when he learns the young woman has burn scars. And then there's the super-rich former child star who seems rather ... troubled. There are more details about the plot floating around online, but that's no fun! This is Cronenberg's second collaboration with Robert Pattinson, whom he cast in 2012's "Cosmopolis" as a ridiculous wealthy jerk who's riding through Manhattan in a limo. If we're keeping count -- and obviously we are -- "Maps to the Stars" marks Pattinson's second foray into onscreen vehicular copulation; unlike "Cosmopolis," he will probably not be getting a prostate exam in this aforementioned car. Cronenberg also directed the far superior "Crash," which was based on J.G. Ballard's book about people who perv out on car crashes. We're sensing a theme. Seriously, "Maps to the Stars" looks fantastic. It doesn't have a US release date at the moment, but chances are good that it will premiere at Cannes to plenty of cheers and jeers. Because that's just how the Cannes audience rolls. Warning: This trailer is definitely NSFW! Photo by Larry Busacca/Getty Images This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
12 Huge Box Office Bombs (and How Much Money They Lost) Posted: As you sweat through filing your taxes, remember that Hollywood does the same thing, only on a much, much bigger scale. Obscene amounts of money are spent making and promoting movies every day and, as you well know, some of those movies don't make that money back. When faced with a flop of epic proportions, like "John Carter" or "47 Ronin," Hollywood writes it off as a big, public loss. Thanks to "Hollywood accounting," the exact amount of money lost on these movies will never be fully known. In putting this list together, we came across wildly varying reports about how big these staggering losses really were, but any way you cut it, these movies tanked and tanked big. Does that mean Hollywood will stop spending hundreds of millions making movies? Not if there's a chance for billions to be made. Here's our list of some of the biggest tax write-offs ever. (Some adjusted for inflation.) Main article photo courtesy of Everett This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
