See the Killing Challenge That Sets Off '13 Sins'

Posted: 11 Apr 2014 07:00 PM PDT

It's all too easy for movies to fall through the cracks these days. It doesn't matter how good they are, there's just a constant tide of movies coming out and there's always something new to overshadow the recently new. So when we come across a smaller movie we really dig, we try to consistently beat the drum for it and raise awareness. That's why you'll keep reading about 13 Sins leading up to its theatrical release on April 18, 2014. (Read our full review of the film here.) If you've missed our previous coverage, 13 Sins is Daniel Stamm's (The Last Exorcism) remake of the excellent Thai film 13: Game of Death. It's about a recently fired man (Mark Webber) who receives a phone call promising him lots of money if he completes a series of tasks...

The Best - and Worst - Movie Trailers of the Week

Posted: 11 Apr 2014 05:00 PM PDT

The new international trailer for Deliver Us from Evil is undeniably unnerving, but the core concept of the film isn’t presented quite clear enough to make the eeriness of the material stick with you after the promo ends. If we learned anything from Sinister, it’s that director Scott Derrickson knows exactly how to etch especially creepy imagery and concepts into your mind, but for now, three other films make a more powerful impression through their promos. The Best Stuff 1. Godzilla You can’t really judge a film by its promo material, but based on what we’ve seen of Godzilla thus far, it just has to be good, right? Like its predecessors, this brand new extended look at the film is absolutely brimming with stunning visuals and honest drama. How could...

Watch: What the Most Mind-blowing Visual Effects of 2013 All Have in Common

Posted: 11 Apr 2014 02:00 PM PDT

There was a time when knowing who was doing the special effects in a movie mattered. If you heard Stan Winston or Tom Savini was involved, you kind of new what to expect. And then when practical effects started to be replaced by digital effects, the celebrity status of movie magicians kind of died down a bit. Sure, movie geeks know names like Industrial Light and Magic and Weta, but they haven't really penetrated into the pop conscious the way behind-the-scenes crews used to and that's a bit of a bummer. Of course, part of the problem is that the demands on megabudget movies today means that no movie has just a single company working on its visual effects. Dozens of companies can all work on a single movie, in turn diluting the name-recognition power of any one company...

Superhero Roundup: 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Update, 'Avengers 3' Details, and 'Amazing Spider-Man 4' News

Posted: 11 Apr 2014 12:00 PM PDT

The superhero movie news just keeps coming – here’s the latest from the world of comic book cinema. Bryan Singer is set to unveil X-Men: Days of Future Past this summer, but it’s never too early to start hyping up the next X-Men feature. The filmmaker revealed some new details about 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse in a recent interview with EW. Singer confirms that the next installment in the franchise will be based “somewhat” on the Age of Apocalypse story from the ‘90s. It won’t, however, be taking place in an alternate universe. “[The movie] won’t necessarily create an alternate universe, but there may be some swapping things that I’m playing with."  Writer Simon Kinberg adds, "From a visual...

'Star Wars' vs. 'Star Trek': See Who Wins in a Battle of Technological Supremacy

Posted: 11 Apr 2014 11:00 AM PDT

It’s the nerd debate that’s been waging for decades – which series is better: Star Wars or Star Trek? While we may never have a definitive answer (I like both – as long as we’re talking the original trilogy and the original Trek), this new infographic posted over at the Geek Twins breaks down the technology of the two franchises in excellent detail. From phasers vs. lightsabers, to the Death Star and Borg Cube, this spiffy visual chart leaves no stone unturned in its quest to compare the technological achievements of Star Fleet and the Galactic Empire. For example, did you know that the Death Star’s Alderaan-crushing beam of destruction is 20 billion trillion megatons of power? How about the fact that Boba Fett’s Slave-1 was actually more...
